Torque specs for p/s pump: 2 bolts in top of pressure line - 8 ft lbs. 2 bolts that hold p/s pump to engine -17 ft lbs. P/s pump pulley -47 ft lbs

Completed this job today. Tips: 1) There are two different 19mm bolt heads mounted to the serpentine belt tensioner plate, one high and one low. I stripped the lower one, but found the upper one much easier to push towards the vehicle's rear as it has more leverage against the hydraulic serpentine belt tensioner mounted low on the passenger side of the engine. I used a 19mm, 3/8 inch drive, splined socket connected to the long serpentine belt bar tool, also 3/8 inch drive, both from Harbor Freight. YOU MUST PUSH VERY SLOWLY AND STEADILY to overcome the hydraulic tensioner without stripping a bolt head. The thin serpentine belt bar tool is very helpful in this really confined workspace. I strongly recommend against using a crowbar or prybar against the crankshaft pulley/oscillation damper as it can generate a really large expense. 2) Really helps to move the power steering fluid reservoir to free up space. 3) Good idea to tie your vehicle's hood to garage roof overhead as the hood support rod gets very much in the way. I discovered a second hole in the hood that fits perfectly and allowed me to raise my 2007 Odyssey hood much, much higher than the usual amount. 4) After finishing the job and having drained the reservoir, the new fluid was clean until the moment I started the engine. It dropped from high to below low in moments and darkened up again. Wish I had looked up the full draining/flushing procedure - due every 60,000 miles/100,000 km. 5) Steering is doing fine, but will monitor it closely for the next week or two to see if the leakage has stopped. I only did this as mine has been leaking since we first bought this van 20 months ago. It now has 151,000 miles. Honda of America refused to help with either this power steering pump leakage problem or the dark blue paint (Touring edition) that is peeling off in golf ball sized chunks.

I followed your video and got everything installed because I was trying not to have my Grandma get screwed over by a dealership. I did *not* replace the high pressure line. Ran the Van and there was a LOT of bubbles happening in the reservoir. I figured maybe I had to move the steering wheel back and forth with each bottle...it sucked down all 3 bottles like a hungry baby! Took it for a spin around the neighborhood...it was still making a noise but a WAY different noise than before...parked it for 10 minutes and then moved the van about 5 feet backwards and the steering wheel did NOT want to move at all. TONS of PS fluid all over the driveway. I've not jacked the car up because it started raining but, is it common for the high pressure line to go bad UNDER the motor? There were zero visible leaks up top.
Sound like air is getting into your system, this would explain why you are seeing a fluid leak. Try to locate the source of the leak. It may be at the pump, hose lines or rack & pinion. Make sure all the hoses are seated correctly and not damaged. Verify the condition of the o-rings on the high pressure line up top. If you have the tools to put a vacuum on it, then you can listen for a hissing sound of air getting drawn in past the seals. From what you posted it seems like the seals on the rack and pinon may have failed.

To all who are having a whining power steering pump when it is cold, replace the O-rings on the high and low pressure side of the pump. The O-rings get hard and suck air. Super easy and cheap. Use Honda PS fluid ONLY!!
+azfightboy Follow the hose from the reservoir to the power steering pump. Take the hose off on the pump side, catch the fluid that drains to prevent a mess. Once the hose is off you will see the plastic pipe. there is one 10mm, I believe, bolt. Take out that bolt and remove the plastic pipe. The O-ring will be in there. Do the same for the high pressure side.
Not always the case tho... Mine had the whining but it was the main seal on the PS pump that was leaking.

Hi there! Two questions...1) what are the torque values for the bolts (I didn't see it posted) and 2) what did you spray on the power steering pump and the area surrounding it before you replaced the engine cover?...engine cleaner?? Great video and thanks for posting!
Work completed but hated myself when I over torque 1 of the pressure bolt so had to get another PS pump😡😣😡.

Thanks for this video. Out of curiosity, what were you spraying the belts and pump with afterwards? Was it silicone or some other water displacement? Or was it a cleaner?
Never spray silicone (Spray) under the hood of any vehicle with sensors of any kind.
I have seen it on an Oldsmobile, all the engine management went haywire.
He was probably spraying brake cleaner or some qukick drying solvent so the belts won't slip from any oil that may have gotten on the belts/pulleys.
i'm not a Honda tech, but science and Auto Mechanics were my strong points in school. Definitely a cleaner. (great guess.) Silicone on a rag can do a nice job detailing your under hood rubber hoses, (not the belts) but avoid the nightmare i mentioned.
( I am on here to learn from these guys who are better than I.)

Some other video is slightly doing it differently. He tried to empty the reservoir first by using a turkey baster for less fluid mess.

Do these ever seize...and would it be wise to have extra parts on hand i.e tensioner pulley? I am relying on parts ordered online and don't want to leave myself stranded. Thanks again!
Thanks again for this video. On a 2004 Odyssey, if the PS Pump pulley front and back faces are not identical, which face of the pulley faces the engine or faces the right fender of the vehicle. I am afraid the mechanic may have installed the pulley backwards, as the pump shaft does not extend all the way to outside surface of the shaft nut. There is actually about 1/8" space between the end of the pump shaft and the outside surface of the shaft nut. This maybe perfectly normal but it just does not seem to be in my eyes.

I changed the tensioner on my 2012 Honda Odyssey EX now I don't have any power steering at all did remove the bottom hose to get to the belt any ideas

First, Thank you! I now believe I can replace this on my own. I filled the steering fluid with a non Honda brand fluid and the next day the red cap blew off while the vehicle was warming up. Fluid went everywhere and now the cap won't stay on. Just looking for an opinion. is it a cap problem or a steering pump problem. This is a Honda odyssey 05 with a 172k. Thank you

Very nice! We have an 07 that did not have the recall (was supposed to be done but the Dealer never contacted us when the parts were in) it is hard to steer at slow speeds. Should I try to replace the reservoir first? If that does not do then the pump? The dealer won't do the recall now because we are over 100K on the odom.

Changed power steering pump and now when i turn on the van the van revs up and down constantly. Sometimes just revs up . It wasnt doing that prior to changing the pump. . Im stumped.

great how-to video, sir! i have a 2004 Odyessey that needs the pump replaced, and i plan on doing it myself. how hard is it to flush the steering system out before refilling it with the good Honda fluid? mine has some off-brand fluid, and would like to have a fairly clean system before filling it. thank you another similar video showed the belt tensioner being compressed ffrom below, (car jacked up, passenger tire and wheel well shield removed), If i also replace the serpentine belt, will it be harder to get it over the pulleys? another video suggested about 1/2" deflection, but is that a good distance based on the existing belt? thanks again

Hi Steward: My 2008 odyssey le has the power steering noise since 110,000 miles, but it only in winter and after high way driving, if I shut down the engine and wait 10 min., then restart, the noise is gone. I just buy a 2007 touring, power steering is making noise, honda said that the rack and pinion is fine and pump is fine, i need to change reservoir , high presure line , pressure switch and flush all fluid. The fluid is a mix of diferent types of fluid. Im thinking on doing it my self. I allways work on my cars. But i never did this before, HOW DO I FLUSH ALL THE FLUID FROM THE SYSTEM WITHOUT DAMAGING THE PUMP? AND, THE PRESSURE SWITCK GOES ON THE PRESSURE LINE? THANKS IN ADVANCE. Robert, my 03 Odyssey is making the P/S whining noise. Belts are tight, steering responsive, no major leaks but does lose fluid over time though not dripping. Do you recommend a pump replacement or perhaps an o-ring kit and fluid/reservoir drain/clean? Wondering if just going brand new pump is the better route. 200k on the original pump. Thanks

Great video, thank you. I do have a question, please. I have a 2004 Odyssey, which has a power steering leak. Do you know if the 2004 had / has a Honda recall on this vehicle as they did on the 2005. Unfortunately I am not so mechanically astute which means I probably have to pay an arm and leg to get it fixed. If Honda does not have a recall on the 2004 could the leak be repaired by replacing the O rings, and if so which ones. thank you

Took me 30 minutes to find the nut for the tensioner. Turns out my engine is a 14mm located elsewhere. beware,there are two versions of the Odyssey engine.

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring that is making a whining sounds when the steering wheel is turned. Usually only makes the sounds when it's cold. I have not seen any leaks and the fluid is a the recommended level in the reservoir. I'm not sure if the P/S pump was changed due to recall. I bought the van in 2010 and I have not changed the pump. Not sure when the recall was. Would you recommend changing the P/S fluid before changing out the pump? Fluid is due to be changed anyways. I also want to change out the reservoir. What was that you were spraying on the pump at the end of the video? Thanks for the info!!
Chris Hall I had the same whining sound problem when I moved the steering wheel. I also have a 2005 Touring. I changed the power steering fluid reservoir and at the same time did a power steering fluid flush which solved that problem. I followed a video here on UA-cam on how to do that. A few months later my power steering pump started squeaking and had a leak so I followed this video to change that out. Easy peasy!
Is Prestone HONDA/Accord PS fluid acceptable?

You can use aftermarket fluid, just need to make sure it is specific to Honda/ Acura
