Hello! I've been building boards again - this time a new mega pedalboard for the amazing Josh Smith. We had two days to put the entire rig together before Josh hit the road on his UK tour with it so everything had to be right the first time. Some awesome clips of Josh tearing it up plus a great insight into how these sorts of pro touring rigs go together. Cheers!
    Dan.

He looks so unlikely - Pete Thorn looks the part...a little bit more fragile and artistic.
Josh looks more like the dude that the contractor makes sit in the back of the van and who comes out to dig the hole for your septic tank. I love that - judge a book by its cover and you miss the story. I always ask for the story, I've learned.

Josh Smith is refreshing because he is a true “tone hound”.. most pro guitar players can’t explain the signal flow, and specifics of their gear, but Josh is the kind of dude who seems to have the user manual in his head for every pedal he owns!! I really love when players can know and explain their gear well. Love this video!

I'll never need anything like this and I'm obsessed with keeping my pedalboard as small as possible, but I do love seeing these "super-boards" being put together. Having said that about keeping my board small, my current board is 14.5" wide, 9.5" deep and holds 8 mini pedals plus a 2-channel, 75w amplifier (solid state of course!). It doesn't make me play as well as Josh though sadly!

Here we go again. I very much want to watch this and at the same time I very much don’t. Josh’s playing is so good as to put me in a simultaneous state of joy and despair. Joy at the beauty of it and despair at my own inadequacies.

    • @FossilFishy

Robert Wellington Cheers man, but I’m afraid that ship has sailed.
I’m 53, I’ve been playing for 30 years off and on. I’ve got good technique from studying classical in uni, tinnitus from my time gigging in the 90’s, and no real illusions as to my abilities and prospects.
I simply don’t have the time that would be required to take that huge leap from my current rather idiosyncratic abilities and anything approaching Josh’s mastery. Not mention that these days I’m fighting to maintain my left hand flexibility in the face of ageing hands.
And that’s okay, I’m perfectly happy with the little improvements I do have the time for. I do live looping and my metronome work over the last few months has noticeably made that easier and more musical. I take as much satisfaction in that as I did the big skill gains I got back in the day.

    • @robertwellington2616
      @robertwellington2616 5 років тому

Fossil Fishy I hear you. Tinnitus is one reason I never wanted to be in a band on top of losing my hearing. It seems to run in my family. Deafness that is and I just don’t enjoy performing. Just love playing for me since I was a kid. But my hand and thumb thx to texting and guitar are already affected too. So I hear u. I thought u had never gotten started. But you’re a player and ur probably better than u let on. But this hobby does affect some people physically as I said and I hope I don’t have to give it up. I had to for a year myself and I was miserable. Take care.

I will often send a video clip to friends and say, "This is why I _______ UA-cam"... it will either be filled with hate or love. This last couple of videos with Pete's board, the amp builds, and now Josh's have truly been awe inspiring and why I love UA-cam. To the point of making me emotional. I am old enough to have been around before the internet. A young guitar player of my day could only dream of having this kind of inside look. It has nothing to do with my own gear or playing. It is just kind and generous for TPS and the artists/vendors to let us go behind the scenes like this. Thanks for letting us hang with the cool kids guys. Really.

I would never do that today. I don’t 🤔 think. But he was playing for an RnB guy. A homeless woman came in and she was really enjoying herself. But she started singing along real loud and the band was smiling and well it was interesting. I’ll just say that. She was just enjoying what little bit of life she had left. Dan @6:32 reminds me so much of Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney on SNL back in the day. "Do you ... do you remember the Beatles? ... Awesome." Love the humility.

I love seeing Josh on your show, he's almost (almost) as passionate about pedals as you guys are ;)
Seeing the MIDI switching you've built into this board I'd love to see some shows on how it's all done... IN/OUT/THRU and how you assign channels etc to each device. Great work Dan.

Missed Mick in this one ! killer Strat tones from Josh, he really changes his playing I have to say I have massive respect for Dan, what a humble mountain of knowledge this man is. TPS is the Guitar Tech based medium we've all been waiting for. I look forward to seeing you guys just grow more and more, I'd love to see a Huber or Collings or dare I say a Fender CS factory tour with you guys!!!

That is an epic board. Probably costs more than a decent used small car, but Josh seems to make use of every pedal he has put on it, so no money wasted.
He really had a vision for what he wanted here, and you can really see and hear that he is more than pleased with the result.
Good job to both Josh and Dan here.
...and man that guy is such a gifted player. He is among the top 3 blues players at the moment.

    KILLAH!
I could sense Dan wanting to spit when he saw the Line 6 Stomp but he got over it well.
And that layout was neat as - good advert for your own work there.
Maybe you could have asked Josh about the amps and how they relate to the board (and how those bits that weren't pedals work from the players perspective) - but there was plenty to chew on and enjoy.
    Lovely stuff.
