    Lyrics
    He had enough
    He couldn't take anymore
    He'd found a place
In his mind and slammed the door
    No matter how they tried
    They couldn't understand
    They washed and dressed him
    Fed him by hand
Yeah! I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
Free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
    I'll decide not you
    Withdrawn he'd sit there
    Stare blank into space
    No sign of life
    Would flicker on his face
    Until one day he smiled
It seemed as though with pride
    The wind kissed him
Goodbye - and then he died
Yeah! I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
Free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
    I'll decide not you
Keep the world with all its sin
It's not fit for livin' in
    Yeah! I will start again
It can take forever, and ever, and ever
And ever, but I'll still win.
    How many like him,
    Are there still
    But to us, all
Seem to have lost the will
    They lie in thousands
    Plagued and lost
Is nothing worth this bitter cost
Yeah! I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
Free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
    I'll decide not you
Keep the world with all its sin
It's not fit for livin' in
    Beyond the realms of death

In 1978/79 I was playing this song on the beach with a little Panasonic tape recorder and I can remember a guy with long hair saying "Yeah Judas Priest". At that time there was practically no one who had ever heard of them before in the US. Bands like Scorpions, UFO, Budgie were completely unknown until the 80's. Even AC/DC and Rush were just starting to get radio airplay here for the very first time.

It's magical moments like that that makes life fun. Imagine my shock that I got a few "I thought I was the only one who knew of his existence" comments when I posted Tony Martin on vocals for Black Sabbath on a metal form.

    He's had enough
    He couldn't take anymore
He found a place in his mind
    And slammed the door
    No matter how they tried
    They couldn't understand
    They washed and dressed him
    Fed him by hand
Yeah! I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
I'm free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
    I'll decide not you
    Withdrawn he sat there
    Staring into space
    No sign of life
    Would flicker on his face
    Until one day he smiled
It seemed as though with pride
    The wind kissed him goodbye
    And then he died
Yeah I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
I'm free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
    I'll decide not you
Keep the world with all its sin
It's not fit for livin' in
    Yeah I will start again
It can take forever, and ever…

I am thankful this was one of the firsts songs I've listened by Judas. Man, so terrifying, and raw, delicate, if you feel the feeling of it. An absolute master piece. By the way, Judas came a few years ago, they did a great gig, I am thankful to them. Absolute metal legends.

From the ting sound of the drumbeat(representing the excruciating loneliness and boredom),& with the Brewing sadness in the bass line, the agony & anger from Tiptons guitar,to kks crazy chaotic outtro......this solo puts you right in this persons body......this solo is up there...and that probably an understatement..💪👍

I'd say more "Welcome Home... Sanitarium" instead of "Fade to Black"... For the structure of the song and even for the lyrics, I find those two songs very comparable.

Man, so much good to mention, every aspect from the song craft to the engineering and production, the playing and performance, no one else was like it. Rock solid rhythm section, Binks killing it and Hill locked in tight with him, the stellar guitar work and of course that voice. It's just my opinion but about the singing - I've found that there've been other vocalists that can scream like Halford (not many, but they're out there) - but what I like the most is his timbre, the sound and characteristics when he's _not_ screaming, THAT is a sound I've _not_ heard from any other singer, you can tell *immediately* that it's Halford. And I just watched a recent video he made where he listed (I think) 10 singers who had an impact on him and he seems like such a feet-on-the-ground, humble guy. And the fact that he''s been a rock star for decades and not only survived but stayed in one piece and _still_ performs says a LOT about him.
