- Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently stated that the upcoming Playstation 5 would feature a storage architecture "far ahead of anything you can buy on anything on PC for any amount of money right now". Linus initially attacked Sweeney's statement, citing existing SSDs with faster read/write speeds. In this video, Linus explains how he misunderstood Sweeney's statement, apologizes for spreading misinformation, and discusses some of the cool tech that makes the PS5 truly exciting for gamers of all stripes.

Whole video felt like a Sony ad to me.
In Italy we have a saying, which I hope still makes sense even though it's translated: "those who eat make breadcrumbs". This means, unless you're an amoeba or something similar, you are DEFINITELY going to make mistakes and that's totally acceptable. But recognizing those mistakes is what separates conceited people from truly honest ones, and that means a lot. You showed us that you care about the weight of your words, about your audience and about this (and other) channels spreading correct information and quality content for everyone to enjoy. @@lautaross13 idk, there is a lot of overhead in a normal PC as was mentioned in this video. Even just using a file system tuned for exactly a game console workload and handled by an ASIC could be a huge gain. Same for not making the CPU handle much of the copy this to ram work by offloading it to the PCIE SSD's controller. However i am concerned that the XBOX is basically a PC (select target in PC dev kit and bam!), and the PS5 isn't. So like the PS3 much of the power will remain untapped because it's "too hard" or just simply "too different" for it to make sense to optimize for. Hopefully things like Unreal5 and other game engines are the parts that handle most/all of the heavy lifting for the Devs, but things like not worrying about double packing assets, or teh ability to transparently decompress assets at the hardware level makes me less than hopeful it will be "automatic".

Linus is nothing to Sweeney, as evidenced by the fact that Linus clearly didn't know what he was saying. So why would Sweeney bother going after someone who can't even get the basic facts right? He has seasoned engineers/researchers to discuss with. He let the rest of us correct Linus for him. Ultimately, Linus isn't even apologizing to Sweeney, he's trying to earn his audiences respect back.

Wow sir I am blown away by this video. Mistakes happen and we all get caught up in moment like that. I have even more respect for your channel by the way you handled this and even tho you screwed up here I am sure glad you can admit it and move forward and kick as with yet another awesome presentation. I wish I had even a speckle of knowledge about tech. Which is why I have been obsessed in watching this channel. I bought a pc off ibuypower and it is pretty impressive. I spared no expenses. Well with something i did but only with ssd really. I only have a 512gb ssd. And want to get a bigger one. I have 16gb ram but want a little more. Missed out on Bluetooth and need to add that. But I have rtx 2080 super a killer gpu I don't knownall the names of the parts but spent about 2500 bucks. And I have no idea what any of it means. I am a pleb. I want to learn how tonnage upgrades myself and which parts to get but get super overwhelm by numbers and names and specs. None of it makes sense especially when budgets are concerned

Great apology from Linus. He did unfairly and unjustifiably hate on Samsungs s20 in the video he mentioned though because it didn't work with Microsoft Teams, which isn't even Samsungs fault. That's the only thing that bothers me about this but he seems to be suggesting it's just his opinion which is fair enough. Best apology I've seen on UA-cam though, Linus is truly a great guy!

I’ve never even heard of this situation, but damn! The way Linus is handling things is so mature, really makes me respect him even more.
I'm a pretty jaded guy, so I'd be the first guy to be dubious of any public apology from any sort of public figure. But there was one thing about this video that made it ring a little truer for me... there was no sponsor. 😯
In all seriousness, this has all the elements that belong in a proper apology. He took responsibility for his faults. He didn't attempt to deflect or minimize the nature of his mistake. He set the record straight and explained why he was wrong. While there was a little "image repair" in there, it was not the highlight, and it didn't include some of the more egregious false apology pitfalls that you commonly see in public "apologies" from prominent figures (if they even apologize at all).
Linus, you earned a bit of respect in my book. Keep up the good work and the appropriate amount of humility.

Out of all the “apologies” that happen these days, it’s nice to hear one that is sincere.
Not very sincere. He said the apology was the “worst part of this video”. He also went onto make excuses by basically saying Sweeney shouldn’t be mad about being called stupid, because the insult was based on a misquote.
All he is doing is admitting he was wrong because there’s really no other alternative in a case like this.

I didn't even know this was happening and I ended up discussing hardware/software with my nephew last week anyway. The best parts were dedicated hardware for data decompression and direct mapping of SSD storage space to address space. I know nothing of what the PS5 hardware/software will be but I mentioned these things to him along with explaining what YCoCg is and why having GPU hardware that supports it can also help with load times. I always answer his tech questions the best I can but when he asks about girls and other stuff I just point him at anime and walk away..........

Linus already had a same situation. And everytime, he handled it greatly. Remember when he "fixed" that video card? And Louis Rossman got mad at him for spreading bad practice. What did linus do? He went ahead to see Louis Rossman and let him teach how to fix a video card correctly.
Not only he knew now how it's done, he also got a friend within the journey.

@@curt8806 he doesn't need to know how to specifically fix a GPU. he is a board-level repair expert. meaning he can look at schematics see what parts need to be replaced unsolder components on boards and resolder new parts. A gpu is not that much different from any other board components.

I`d assume it won't be a requirement for the next years. But if they can use it on consol and PC it gets a chance to become a gaming standard.

Some people never admit their mistakes
It's unfortunately rare, but I seek out and follow the kinds of people who do this, so I do see it fairly often. Just off the top of my head, Louis Rossman (who has done some collabs with Linus) just today told a story of when he was wrong about a case that impacted news stories. And recently Vintage Space did a tear down of her own TedX Talk. She originally did the talk on a topic that seemed kind of interesting and that initial research for the talk lead her to write a whole book in which she uncovered how little she had known back then.

MAX WOLF (can’t tell if you are a poe) I think it was actually sincere but he would also have a strong motivation to fix it in a hurry. At least some of the “journalists” at buzzfeed are actually journalists and likely feel bad about some of the stuff they put out but the company has no motivation to publish corrections.
