London prices are high but reality is that's a tourist trap, so you're better off going to a fish and chip takeaway shop. Better quality and very likely better prices.
I think I can do worse than these two. The nastiest fish and chips that I've eaten in London was from a shop in Cowley, West London. The offering consisted almost entirely of grease-soaked batter accompanied by dry chips. The grease seeped through the wrapper onto my trousers which I had to change. I went to a fish and chip shop in Wales a few years ago, catch of the day £17 thought I'll give it a go. FAS is standard and can be if defrosted first as good or better then fresh. Cooked from frozen is a no no. Catering for tourists who will never be returning customers.
Your wrong ffas can be cooked from frozen, rinse under cold tap to remove the salt glaze dry then steam poach fry bake what ever way you want to just add a couple mins onto cooking time
I live by the coast and get fresh cod and chips for around £7-9 depending what shop you visit, even when i lived in London up a few years back was only about £7. All chip shops now are very rarely run by English People hence lower quality in most places and lots of Frozen Fish out there, but there are a few foreign run ones which are Ok too. Always avoid any fish and chip shop which sells Kebabs and chicken etc as these are usually the worse.
£3 for chips is what I can get over. Chips are only £4 in a Michelin star restaurant how the hell are they charging £3 for the worst chips you can buy! 😳
Frozen fish is actually fresher than fresh fish it’s caught filleted and frozen in under a hour where as fresh fish can actually be a week old b4 it’s even got to the chip shop 2-3 days on the boat land it sell it on the market get it in to the restaurant big long process
The problem with *ANY* frozen food is the breakdown of the tissue as the cells expand as the water freezes. This is very much the case with seafood, especially fish. Whatever advantages were had by being snap-frozen quickly after catch are lost and then some, by the physics of it. Thawing doesn't help much either, as the water escapes from the now broken cells. 2-3 days in a cool refrigerator for fresh fish is fine.

I don't think you can complain about the price, you've picked one of the most expensive parts of London to eat in! And London is always more expensive than elsewhere in the UK. The further in you go, the more the price goes up. Even Wetherspoons, the prices are more in Central London, rents & rates are just so much higher there...... As an aside, nothing wrong with tea with your fish dinner (and i tend to find tea comes from India.... Do you have secret underground tea growing facilities under the Yorkshire Moor perhaps?..... lol) unless in a pub, then a pint of ale with your fish is a must! And don't be upset about being charged for two cod portions, i've always found scampi to be more expensive than cod, so you've had a right result there my son...... and yes, i am a cockney!....lol Good vid though.....
Actually you can totally complain about the price, even allowing for the usual London mugging that's just embarrassing. At least make it half decent if you're going to bend him over for it - no excuse for that.

I don't think it was ever regarded as amazing, but it was quite OK & no complaints, most people usually eat outside I remember, under an awning. Rents in Covent Garden were starting to go crazy when I was there, so they will be beyond astronomical now, so you do have to bear that in mind, but yes for that, i expect near perfect. You can usually tell good from average to bad straight away, as I always look for batter that looks like dry, spikey coral, that was shiny & very flat, it's not going to be good. Shame, it's been done up nicely, but they haven't a clue obviously.

I was surprised at your reaction to the slice of lemon with your fish! Controversial this might be but, a squeeze of lemon is the natural addition I'd find to my fish & chips anywhere or, when it comes to it, on any fish from smoked salmon to scampi. Most chippies include a slice here in London, eat in or takeaway. And here's something which you'll probably not like but, smothering chips in vinegar absolutely turns my stomach! Vinegar, ffs???!!! How do you ever taste the actual potato? Yes, I know it's a tradition here (for some reason I'll never understand) but, honestly, UGH! Also notice you've never had a pickled gherkin with your meal. I only use a little sprinkle of real chip shop vinegar also called Non Brewed Condiment. It’s what makes British fish & chips taste so unique. Malt vinegar like Sarsons isn’t traditional and I’d rather go without vinegar if it isn’t non brewed condiment.
Lemon certainly enhances the flavour of any fish ,,, as far as the vinegar is concerned I do like vinegar on my fish and chips. I will not purchase Sarsons ( malt vinegar ) again, quite expensive here and I actually prefer a very light sprinkle of apple cider vinegar.
Yep...worked in the building opposite this chip-shop. Used to get a bus to Masters Superfish in Waterloo Road, does great fish n chips at a reasonable price. Not been there for a while but they used to do Cod and Chips for £7 (fish wasn't a huge portion, more like a medium but tasted great)

MAC! Go into lidl and buy their whole tail scampi, I'm telling you mate for £2 a bag it's bloody lovely, bang it in the oven for 25 minutes serve with salad . Or whatever you want to put with it. Seriously mate it's lovely.
There was a girl in my class in school called Amanda and I fancied her something rotten. She asked me out and I said yes. The next day she blew me out, so it gets a 0/10 from me.
To be honest it's easier to skin a fish when it's frozen, as you can pull from the tail and it comes off. Frozen fish, if good quality is as expensive as fresh and sometimes tastier as it is frozen within hours of being caught...but cooking from frozen is not good, as you say it can be very watery, the trick is to leave it in cold water and it literally defrosts in no time. The way the scampi was just dumped on the plate 😂😂😂😂 and the batter looked sad on your fish..love your channel it's fab😁😁
Worst fish and chips I have ever had in my life (I'm over 60) was in skegness in a franchise for "harry ransome?". A really well known northern England brand. The fish was classed as boneless, and when I cut through the batter it was also almost fishless. It was a thin musch. It was not cod, pangassi or some other cheap shit but not cod. And the chips were thin, limp and anaemic..and I mean white. My wife is German, we were over getting another car and, making it a bit of a holiday so travelling back over a few days. B&B in skeggie, see the sights etc. Saw the chippy, told her best in the UK. How disappointed was I that she thought this is the best. I cannot remember another time that I have never eaten a meal that I have ordered. But this was beyond the pale (no pun intended).
It's not raining here in the Canaries Lee. The sun is shining, the Tropical beer is good and comes in frosted glasses (vaso frio) and the tapas is excellent. You're in the wrong place mate!

You could buy a semi detached round where I live in 1992 for 9 quid. Just watched a cod and chips review at a pub in Pattaya Thailand which looked proper! Lovely bit of fish, home made tartar, proper home made chips and plenty of them - lovely dine in environment. Includimg the Coke 220 Baht. Or around 5.75 UK pounds. And that's Thailand where they have to fly it all 6000 miles. 5.75 v 21 quid ( including that 3 quid Coke ) Taking the Mickey they really are
Why fry it still frozen? Any chippy using Icelandic cod or haddock will be using fish that was caught & then frozen at sea but surely you defrost it before cooking?

You can't claim Yorkshire & eat Cod ... Haddock up north you know it
You mean Addock!
Brilliant vlogg Lee, You tell it the way it is. That's why you are the No 1 vlogger. ONWARDS
Thank you. 😎
A big fat 0 from me. They told a lie to a customer regarding what they are serving at a high price. -10 if I could.
Any chippy charging 34 quid for frozen fish and chips deserve the 1.6, i would have went lower than that.
In Stoke on Trent I could get fish and chips for five people and I'd have a fair bit of change from 30 quid.
Bit of a difference between Stoke on Trent and London mate.😂
@@sillybilly1662 fish and spud is fish and spud wherever u are
same here in yorkshire hahaha
@@noeldarby1635 Nonsense. Apart from the London prices obviously I think fresh locally caught seaside fish is a bit different my friend.
@@sillybilly1662 yeah I agree but if some1 slapped a haddock and chips from London and 1 from stoke on your table u wouldnt know the differnce
The best chippy on this planet was Ashton's in great moor.fresh cod chips and peas tea bread and butter £6.10p.and that's not ages ago.they have retired now but they were the best.thanks to Dave and his missus.👍
£34???!!! That shocked me when I heard that - 2 fish, chips and peas with tea or pop you’d be looking at £15 at our local chippy. I appreciate you sat indoors so it was likely to be a little bit more expensive but £34! I didn’t pay for it and I feel like I’ve been ripped off
OW MUCH was heard echoing around Convent Garden. Actually there was a story yesterday about a dad buying fish and chip takeaway costing £54 for 4 people in London.
Coral island fish&chip shop worst chippy in Blackpool. Expensive too.
I thought Coral Island was an amusment arcade, also all the fish and chips and all the food on sale is discusting all you can get is really bad fish and chips or really bad burgers, i had to walk to the north shore before i found really bad chinese food wich i ate instead !
My fav in Blackpool is Lillys which is nr central pier 👍
I was there last week and had fish and chips and i totally agree
MAC! Go into lidl and buy their whole tail scampi, I'm telling you mate for £2 a bag it's bloody lovely, bang it in the oven for 25 minutes serve with salad . Or whatever you want to put with it. Seriously mate it's lovely.
Lies are the worst , if they tell truth you can make an informed decision ,
I find it the same at any local Harvester, or that hotel in Telford adjoining the football pitch.
That's Outrageous For Fish And Chips Would Cost £6 each here in Maryport The LifeBoat Is Amazing
There was a girl in my class in school called Amanda and I fancied her something rotten. She asked me out and I said yes. The next day she blew me out, so it gets a 0/10 from me.
Geezer thought the scampi won't be frozen. The well known fresh out the sea scampi 😂
I like how the chick at the back is earwigging. 🤣
Lol. 😂
To be honest it's easier to skin a fish when it's frozen, as you can pull from the tail and it comes off. Frozen fish, if good quality is as expensive as fresh and sometimes tastier as it is frozen within hours of being caught...but cooking from frozen is not good,
as you say it can be very watery, the trick is to leave it in cold water and it literally defrosts in no time.
Ahh Harry Ramsden. I've done a review of them if you have a look back in my videos. Used to be good but became a franchise and went downhill. 🤢
If you’re wife is German she could teach you a thing or two about fish takeaway. Germany offers great seafood
Your first mistake was thinking that any fish and chips could be as good as in Yorkshire...
When TRYING to do the Yorkshire accent Lee,we don't say 'aint it' we say 'int it' lol.
I decided to avoid London years ago forever. Changed my life, ...for the better.....forever.... no going back...
Naming and shaming these places is the only way.
Get yourself to Whitby for great fish and chips ..
Apparently he didn't think so.
It's shit now, all use imported frozen fish
The worst fish and chips I had was at Hastings in some dive cafe. Placed the order and less than five minutes later my order was placed on my table.
Ridiculous price, however, I did think the fish & chips looked great but frozen fish? hell no!!
It's not raining here in the Canaries Lee. The sun is shining, the Tropical beer is good and comes in frosted glasses (vaso frio) and the tapas is excellent. You're in the wrong place mate!
Is southern people get proper mugged off large portion of chips in Essex is the same size as regular in Leicester
This type of scam is why people end up hating London.
I still haven't recovered from a 9 quid salmon bagel at a deli in Chelsea ...IN 1992!
5.75 v 21 quid ( including that 3 quid Coke )
Taking the Mickey they really are
The Tavern chippy in Abergele north wales ( exactly five mins from where I’m a celebrity has been filmed for the past two years ) is amazing 🤩 Lee Xx
That was a shocking price Lee. What an absolute rip off. Hopefully you never have to experience that again! 🥰🌞🥰Xxx
Why fry it still frozen? Any chippy using Icelandic cod or haddock will be using fish that was caught & then frozen at sea but surely you defrost it before cooking?
It wasn't caught in Iceland... More likely bought from Iceland
Omg 😲 £34 ! Did you get a complimentary balaclava ? Can you imagine what Gordon Ramsay would have said about frozen fish ! Bleep bleep 🤣🤣 Such a shame that all that travelling to get there was NOT worth it after all. Another great vlog 🤗
Fed up waiting to get to the fish shop sorry too much introduction x
@@janisreynolds4921 Nice
All fish is delivered frozen
How on earth they still in business ??? Rates etc in London extremely high unless this business is a front for other "means"
Business rates and rents in central London are very, very high.
Was Darren's scampi the meal scampi often made using prawns/shrimp or was it scampi as in the little lobstery thing?
Managerie, I will use this word to expand my vocabulary 😂😂
That's the first time I've seen a fried breakfast served in a soup dish!!??
You get a fish tea in Scotland. Its fish and chips, bread and butter and tea. Can't believe your freind hadn't had tea with fish and chips. I'll be in London at the end of July, I know where to avoid now
Fish and chips, bread n butter with a mug of tea is traditional! Mushy peas, pickled onion, gherkin etc all optional extras! My favvourite is just fish and chips, salt and vinegar and sat on the seawall choosing away!
@@robertlower6212 aye, I just like fish and chips on its own with non salt or viniger. The majority of people like salt I think. Up here the chippies will allso lather them in brown sauce. Fish and chips from a decent chippy, though, dish of the Gods.
That bill was wrong as well, one of you had Scampi but they charged for two Cod loins...
They both ordered cod but upon hearing frozen fish put on a plate one changed to scampi and chips
London is not the place to go if you want great fish and chips. The North has better chippies.
Well the best fish and chips or the highest rated fish and chips is in Greenwich.
@@damiagunbiade Which one is that?
@@damiagunbiade Is it the Golden Chippy?
34 quid and it's frozen fish. Oh dear. Thats not good. I am lucky enough to live near Tyldesley in Manchester and the local chippy is hard to beat for quality and freshness.
When you need a strimmer for all the weeds on your plate you should be a landscape gardener maybe ?!
How much ?!! You could have got a train and had fish and chips in the South West and got change
Great vid take care
Great video guys... Good genuine review. Loving the content.
Thank you. 😎
Sorry that award goes to the fish & chip shop in the O2, food poisoning for everyone! Hooray!
I come from a fishing family I know when it's been frozen I've had lots of arguments about liars so bad x
It's not frozen and it's probably the best fish and chips in central London. It's 13 pounds to takeaway. Who sits in a chip shop and eats fish and chips lol. Fish and chips is known for eating out a box or paper.
Great content mate subbed.
Thank you. 😎
I'm from Yorkshire and only say "eh" when my wife tells me something as I'm concentrating on driving round a busy roundabout..... or when people keep going on about people from Yorkshire!!! Eh???? :D
