You're brave for trying this place out. The first and last time-in fact my only time-to the same place, was back in 1991 when it was The Aberdeen Steakhouse!! Went in there with friends for a pre-theatre dinner. About 10 years later there was a programme on the telly showing off the kitchens of these places-rat and mouse droppings everywhere🤢. The Slug and Lettuce nearby is a bit cleaner but their steaks aren't that great either. Glad you're feeling a bit better 👍
OMG! I went to an Aberdeen Stake house in Paddington around that time. We walked out because of the filth. The waiter’s uniform was filthy, the cutlery and table cloth absolute dirt. Some years later it featured on a documentary tv programme about rat infested restaurants. I wonder if it’s the same one as yours?
English Country Life OMG-I completely forgot about the one in Paddington! And for a reason-I ended up with gastroenteritis after visiting the one in Paddington and it was a long time ago....around 1986/87. Went there with my mother and late step-father. Could've been Garfunkles, but I think it was an Aberdeen steak house. Seems redundant to me to re-brand it as an Angus Steak House (nearly spelled it 'Anus'🤣!!). The one I was initially talking about was the one on Charing Cross Road. I find it quite concerning when the reviews on Tripadvisor etc are 4 out of 5 stars. TOURIST TRAPS!!
Okay London prices aside - I am a catering butcher in leeds, and i sell to restaurants and hotels (better places than that shithole) and rarely would you find an 8oz fillet steak for less than what you paid there. They would, however, have much more flavour, and be cooked better. Those fillets of beef you ate are almost certainly imported from Brazil or Venezuela. That's not what made you ill, what made you ill was them using beef past its best.
True, but I highly doubt it was the prawn cocktail unless it was stored incorrectly for extended time after purchase as he said it was in date, also it was from M&S - enough said. I would bet it was that restaurant
@@matthew6994 To be fair, this restaurant probably gets through meat really quickly so doubt it's old food. Why think M&S have better hygiene than anyone else? Humans are humans!
As a Chef at the 5* level, sorry to hear you were sick first of all. In my opinion the sickness could either be the Prawn Cocktail or the peppercorn sauce as it contains dairy products. With the steak itself very unlikely as the bacteria tends to be on the outside. And both the chips and sad onion rings are deep fried so again unlikely. From looking at the fillet when you cut into it, it did look dry so maybe a " reheated " steak ???. Anyway a place I would never go to .

I am amazed that the chain is still going. I remember it was seen as a bit naff around the late 1990s, as The Evening Standard did a bad review of the franchise at the time. It's especially strange as to how it's still going now, as there's other really good steakhouse chains now(Goodman's and Hawksmoor spring to mind).
Glad I came upon your channel, watching them all now, from Scotland so liked the fish and big brekie ones. A while ago I discovered the art of cooking steak and have never looked back. Used to overcook it as seen here but getting it right is key even if it has a bit of blood. Anyway keep going and look forward to other ones.
Once went to a pizza hut in Central London. Not long after leaving i felt like i was dying and was sick in the cab .My mum paid the driver for the inconvenience. I was only young at the time. Not long after visiting i read about that restaurant i had been in and there was mention of hygiene issues such as rat droppings. Put me off pizza for a good while. I have been back in pizza hut since but not that same restaurant. The hygiene rating is only as good as the day the place is inspected and ratings don't have to be placed on the door in England. I've passed this place on my trips around London and wondered what it was like so thanks for sharing 👍. There is nothing like a good steak and it seems this was nothing like a good steak ! 😋
You never go into central tourist places for food unless its a cafe. They have to churn out food constantly for droves and droves of tourists. Its always busy so can you imagine they don't take time to cook food or clean etc because they are always tending to more people. I always ate on the slight outskirts of London in the more quieter places that were still somewhat "Central Londony" Places like Chalk Farm/Primrose Hill, Hamstead Heath or Angel.
Thanks for the heads up about this place, you can't be too careful about seafood though, so don't rule out the prawns especially if they had the sauce on! Hope you are feeling better.👍
I have ALWAYS wanted to eat at an Angus Steakhouse ever since my first visit to London Town in the 90s. It has always been on my to do list, I don’t know what it was that drew me to them… But after this video, not any more! I am so sorry to hear that you experienced illness (whether the fault of the steakhouse or not) but that has put paid to that for me, and fair play to you for going through what you do in the name of vlogging.
To be honest I’m ‘apprehensive’ that you considered going medium well for a fillet…the fillet is prized for its tenderness, at med well it’s not going to be tender. It has no fat present to render and help retain moisture and most fillets are ‘barrel cut’ meaning they are deep and narrow. Therefore to get med - med/well takes a good while on the grill too. I think you should try med rare next time and ask the chef to give it a ‘heavy rest’ so that juices don’t run. Or if you like med - med/well go with a ribeye!
Make me laugh 😂 these guys, but you learn a lot from the Mac & Darren on we’re to eat, and not to eat, they make the mistakes for us so we don’t make them and of course they will find you and tell you some of the best places to eat!! Especially in London! Great video Mac!!

So Lee as a chef I went under a lot of training for food hygiene and poisoning.if it was the prawns you would have been ill within a short period of time depending if they were on the turn, poorly refrigerated and badly stored. Now the steak meal was a low hazard meal. My bet is on the prawns being incorrectly stored. Your bad stomach started after steak meal but you didn't get violently ill till later in the night. Basically the shit steak meal didn't sit well on top of bad prawns mate. You are now better off not eating much clear yourself out and then only eat a light meal to give your stomach time to heal. Best of luck. Please let me know how you are ok
Nice to see a fellow chef here in the comments. Didn’t see he had prawns when making my comment. Depending what the conditions of the kitchen where like it could of been a factor of things. Yes steak is a low risk food but if things where cross contaminated.
Thank you for that. I'm so glad I sold up in Canary Wharf in 2003 and moved to France. In comparison I can get a four course meal at my local restaurant... e.g. charcuterie starter, steak frites main, cheese board, sweet, carafe of red wine and coffee. For 13€. And it's perfect. And no projectile vomiting.... 😨
The steak can't be the issue, but you said you ate prawns earlier in the day, if I ever felt sick and looked back what I ate and got to prawns, that's the culprit!!!? In fact last time I got food poisoning It was after a Chinese, special egg foo young 🤮🤮🤮🤮
Lee enjoyed your vlog at Angus steakhouse does any of your watchers know there was an Angus steakhouse in Los Christanos in Tenerife near the blue station.
This is like Jackass and you keep enduring pain to bring us another episode. I am already very worried for you eating at the Palace again. Such a brilliant and honest London review.
I’m staggered that Angus Steak House is still in existence. I went to one in Soho in about 1975 and even though I was a naive teenager I could tell it was crap. I suspect they survive on custom from the least discerning type of American tourist. Of which there are plenty in that part of London.
If you buy a steak in Australia it automatically comes with either chips or salad or both, you don't have to pay extra for that. that is a rip off, did they charge you for the use of a knife and fork as well.
Braver man than me. Anyone who lives or works in London avoids the Angus Steakhouses because they’re expensive tourist trash. Poor quality, badly cooked and overpriced.
I've not eaten in London before. What exactly is a service charge paying for? And why isn't it encoporated within the food price. Is it advertised anywhere that they add a service fee?
A service charge is an optional addition (usually about 12.5%) to your bill which is for the service you’ve received. You can ask to have it removed and not pay it, but generally speaking you should only request that if your service has been bad. It’s normally mentioned somewhere on the menu and it replaces the tip.
I went to one of these in the late nineties (I think it was in the Leicester Square area but couldn't swear to it) and I could have sworn it was called Angus Steak House then. It wasn't cheap and the portions were so small myself and my mate went to the nearest chippy straight afterwards because we were still starving. When you cut through that steak I thought it looked a bit form for a fillet, and the fact that there was pool of juice on your plate before you started clearly indicates that it had not been rested before serving.
Listen, Man United might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table. Let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he's done since he's come in. Ole's at the wheel, man. He's doing it. He's doing his thing. MAN UNITED ARE BACK!!!!
It's an embarrassing tourist trap, always has been for decades. I've managed to avoid that restaurant and others in the chain for 50+ years thank heavens!
I went there years ago on a family treat and it was a treat because in those days steak was a rarity. I was just impressed to go up town and to young to know what was a good steak and what was a bad steak. I could probably count on one hand the times Mum and dad went to a restaurant in those days , just didn’t have the money . I’m talking in the 60 s . Restaurants have to be good these days because if they’re not they get found out.
Awww bless you Lee! I’m sorry you have suffered since going down to London. I hope you feel better soon to do the next review. To your review today in all honesty that all looked okay the steak, fries, onion rings and peppercorn sauce. I don’t like steak. But if I had no other choice. The only thing is my steak has to be well done. What a shame it didn’t taste of anything and for that price too. I doubt DJ is upset at missing that Vlog as you both could have been ill. He’s a sweetie for leaving a little message regardless. Scoring looking at your meal I’d give it a 7. Take care Lee
Definitely the prawns. I’ve had some bad experiences with M And S sandwiches. Found a caterpillar in one once. As for the Angus steak house. Went in the 90s. It was so bad we refused to pay. Couldn’t eat it . They tried to stop us leaving and threatened to call the police. Didn’t end well for them! We left! I believe they changed the name because Aberdeen Angus is a recognised seal of quality for beef from Aberdeen Angus cattle. Clearly not sold in this steak house therefore fraudulent.
This chain used to be all over central London. They were designed as tourist traps, and they always had a seedy reputation. I always wanted to know what one was like, hence watching this video.
As a Londoner I'd rather go to a local cafe or even Wetherspoons than an Angus Steakhouse for a steak. They've always looked grim and must survive on tourism alone. I'd give it a 2 for the service you got.
I wonder if restaurants are trying to circumvent the new Laws for sharing tips. Call it a 'cover charge'. Just Eat have done this with CARD charges Law change.
Only eaten there once years ago and never fancied eating there again but one of the best chain steak restaurant is flat iron and my favourite restaurant is the Covent Garden one because you get a free ice cream at the end. Also free beef dripping popcorn at the beginning of the meal.
First time watching mate, quite enjoyed the vlog. Just wondering how they are still open especially with all the bad reviews etc. Seems its been bad for years..
Hello, MacMaster Angus Steak House is Still in Existence 🤣🤣🤣 Fries & Onion Rings Pre-Frozen from Iceland 😒 Reason they use No Seasoning is That they Use Frozen Donkey Meat for their Fillet Steaks & Famous Stock Cube MSG Mushroom Flavour Pepper Sauce 🤔😒🥴😢🤢👎
Them onion rings looked remarkably like Aunt Bessies frozen onion rings and they are tasteless and the frozen chips £1.29 for 5 kilo's from Farmfoods the fillet steak did it state it was from a cow or perhaps it was from an old Buffalo from the wild west you never know it is london after all
The onion rings and chips looked to be from frozen. You'd expect home made at these prices, but it is London after all. I've had some horrific food bills in London.
You are correct in this comment. 24-48 hours for food poisoning relating to hygiene and so on. The only form of food poisoning that would be faster acting would be botulism, which can take effect within 12 hours, but by that time you would require an ambulance! I reckon Mac Master had 'meat sweats', a form of indigestion, as human beings take a good while to digest a large amount of meat over a short period of time. Basicly, no-one's dying! Take care. Love and peace.
@@daweshorizon used to work for a high end restaurant&we were told to say it takes 24hrs for food poisonings IF they said they had the meal 2=3hrs ago.if they did say it was 24hrs we were told to say are u sure it was our food!

This isn't the same restaurant we ate at, same chain though. I really enjoyed your content, your editing is fantastic. Thank you 👍🍻
£50 a lb for crap 💩 If you cut into any steak and find that feathery, tearing consistency despite it being medium rare, it’s off a sh17 cheap breed of cow and is dry as a bone and chewy. Your knife should slide through fillet leaving a clean face
Blimey I watched the end of your video after I commented and I'm frankly astonished that my eye is still working when it comes to dodgy food, and after all these years since my catering days.
I remember skipping over the back gate of my grammar school in the 60s and taking the train up to London for a day out..wandering around I'd always come across the Aberdeen angus steakhouse in I believe Leicester Square and as a 17 year old schoolboy with no money having to settle for a Mars bar instead..glad now it wasn't the culinary delight I'd imagined..to get into Kew Gardens back then it was one old penny in a slot in an old football style turnstile now it's £16..blimey

I was there in '95. It was awful. A woman was beheaded at Los Christianos market about 10 years later...probably not linked though...
Just remembered there’s one right opposite Paddington station, to entrap the poor saps the moment they step off the train from Heathrow.
How long does it take to get sick from food poisoning?
Symptoms begin 30 minutes to 8 hours after exposure
Never visit a restaurant that has photos of the food on the menu 👍🏼
Exception is Chinese restaurants
Almost 24 quid for the steak on its own.
What a swizz!
Nothing looked appetising except the lager.
Hope you are feeling better now Lee.
Slug and lettuce haven’t got the best steaks. They also have a drink callled a boobtini🤣😂.But, Miller and Carter is the king we can all agree.
No way troll
Omg Lee how can you sit in the street in London doing a Thumbnail ?😂😂😂😂 I just couldn’t 👍👍👍thumbs up for doing it your mental 😝
If you buy a steak in Australia it automatically comes with either chips or salad or both, you don't have to pay extra for that. that is a rip off, did they charge you for the use of a knife and fork as well.
Why do you think there was a cover charge?
4am knowing that you have to put a Palace cafe fry up in you hours later, good luck 😁😩
Braver man than me. Anyone who lives or works in London avoids the Angus Steakhouses because they’re expensive tourist trash. Poor quality, badly cooked and overpriced.
Will steer clear of these Angus Steak houses!! Thanks for the review Lee
On my little Caribbean island we would say “you life lang but you careless wid it”! 🤣🤣
Eat everything and then say it's shite. Wouldn't know a decent meal if it crept up and smacked you in the face.
The legend of Angus continues! I was always told to steer clear of this place... haha
I walk past this every other day and I have never thought I will go in there to eat. I definitely will never eat there after seeing this.
I'm pretty sure there used to be one of these at Leicester Square, it looked good from the outside but never tried it, think its something else now.
It's an embarrassing tourist trap, always has been for decades. I've managed to avoid that restaurant and others in the chain for 50+ years thank heavens!
Nice Ongge Pal ,Never Been Never will lol , Was That The Same Beer Throughout The Vlog LOL 5 .10 For That . Was That Pint ?
I went there years ago on a family treat and it was a treat because in those days steak was a rarity. I was just impressed to go up town and to young to know what was a good steak and what was a bad steak. I could probably count on one hand the times Mum and dad went to a restaurant in those days , just didn’t have the money . I’m talking in the 60 s . Restaurants have to be good these days because if they’re not they get found out.
Thanks for putting yourself on the line you're a true soldier
Fillet steak shouldn't be chewy at all it should melt in the mouth and fall apart. Sounds like you got a pre frozen rump
Seen these steakhouses all over the place. Never once been in one. After watching this, I never will either.
Fair play for marking it down. Should have said "Don't you now who I am?
Worst meal we had in London 1996. Never ordered beef in UK rest of our 14 day tour. Loved UK!
Is it just me who was disappointed to not see footage of him violently vomiting? 🤣
Looks like a fire damaged Hockey Puck on an over sized plate.
The MacMaster filming with the Brewmaster behind him across the road, was that intentional Lee ? 😎🤓
Hello, MacMaster Angus Steak House is Still in Existence 🤣🤣🤣 Fries & Onion Rings Pre-Frozen from Iceland 😒
Reason they use No Seasoning is That they Use Frozen Donkey Meat for their Fillet Steaks & Famous Stock Cube
MSG Mushroom Flavour Pepper Sauce 🤔😒🥴😢🤢👎
Oh bless you. They used to do Angus steak burgers on Crew station in early sixties (posh)🤣 Your meal looked awful, hope you feel better soon x
I've had some horrific food bills in London.
it take 24 hours for any body to get food poisoning
That did not look good at all. I ate in one of these restaurants during the School Summer holidays in London. I really enjoyed it, as did my family. I clicked your thumbnail out of interest. This isn't the same restaurant we ate at, same chain though.
I really enjoyed your content, your editing is fantastic. Thank you 👍🍻
The amount of times I walked past that place and it was full to the rafters I met thinking I should pop in. THANK GOD I DIDN'T!!
Feeling rough, back up at 8 for a full English??? 🤣 Good content dude
Tourist restaurants are notoriously poor Lee.
If you don't see a cab driver in them, stay well clear..😃
Hope you feeling better today, take it as Darren John says it deffo wasn't off the charts 😊
I ate there probably about 20 years when a relative visiting from abroad wanted to stop there while sightseeing. It had a reputation as a tourist trap so I really didn't want to go. The food was actually ok but standards have obviously dropped over the years!
I'm amazed at the price, I'm in Australia and you get a great steak dinner for aus$40. I wouldn't dream of paying aus$90 for that
