    Your reviews never cease to amaze me mate. The charts are so helpful, but the competence and level of testing is second to none. Testing the lanterns with a luxmeter and testing the battery capacity down to the last bit is requires real determination and skills. Thanks for taking six months of your time to give us the most un-biased review out there. Cheers.

    One thing I love about the ML-6 is that you can bring spare batteries if you want, or replace it with a higher MAH battery, and you can pair it with a flashlight or headlamp that also uses the same 18650 battery type. Just be sure to put the spare batteries into a closed case so that there is no possibility of them shorting out. Good review.

    Nice comparison. Another one you could check out is the Sofirn LT1s. It has USB C charging, power bank function, replaceable 5000mAh battery, ramping from warm to cool white, red light and also you can turn on only one side for more direct lighting. It's very compact.

    • @CampingGuidance
      @CampingGuidance  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you so much Jeff! Oh wow someone else here just recommended Sofirn too, looks like I gotta try it out next time! Thank you for letting me know 🥰

    • @jeffgendron1959
      @jeffgendron1959 4 місяці тому

      @@CampingGuidance The only thing I wish it had was a tripod mount and rubber bumpers so it would be more rugged when camping. I ended up 3d printing some I designed in TPU that does the job. It is the most compact lantern with large battery and the driver is really good, The light is flicker free and UI works well.

    • @CampingGuidance
      @CampingGuidance  4 місяці тому +1

      @@jeffgendron1959 Wow that's a really smart move 3D printing them! I'll definitely look up this Sofirn lantern when testing further to update this video! 🥰 Btw, why did you decide to go with the LT1S, instead of the LT1?

    • @jeffgendron1959
      @jeffgendron1959 4 місяці тому

      @@CampingGuidance The reason I went for the LT1S is mainly the UI, size and efficiency. It is very simple to use and the design puts the battery tube in the middle of the lamp since they use 36 LEDs all around the lamp, it's such a smart compact design. Having 36 LEDs also decreases the heat and increases efficiency. The LT1 uses Anduril UI which I have in a few flashlights. It is great but way more programing and features to know about, more than I need. The LT1 is also using 4x 18650 batteries and a big battery tube so much larger and heavier. I like the LT1S having only one 21700 battery that still performs very well.

  • @TimothyWitt
    @TimothyWitt 4 місяці тому

    Just picked up a Sofirn LT1S, I hope it goes well. I know the GoalZero did some big winning on GearLab, but this review is so much more thorough. The lantern world is a mess right now, somebody could really jump in here with a truly great product.
    I'm still banking on somebody to come out with the perfect "Outdoor iPhone" emergency FM AM SW NOAA radio / flashlight / lantern / SOS strobe / siren / solar / crank dynamo / usb-c / 21700 battery / power bank / Bluetooth speaker / air compressor / jump starter...with an antenna port and external solar panel ports.
    It's probably too much to ask XD.

    • @CampingGuidance
      @CampingGuidance  4 місяці тому

      Oh wow nice!! You're the second one to recommend that. I DEFINITELY gotta get one of those for the upcoming lantern videos haha. Thank you for letting me know! 🥰 So far I don't think Goal Zero is that impressive. I'll continue testing and see how it goes.
      And nah that's not too much to ask ;)

    Great video! I personally use Sofirn flashlights as lanterns. Put a white silicone diffuser on either a SP33S (5000 lumen down to 10 lumen) or SP33v3 (3500 lumen down to 1 lumen). They will light a huge area if needed.

    • @CampingGuidance
      @CampingGuidance  5 місяців тому +1

      Thank you so much as always!! 🥰 Oh wow I've never heard of that brand, thanks so much for the suggestion! What other flashlights would you recommend for camping, in case I make that video in the future? Oh and btw how's the Wawona going?

    • @mattssacre
      @mattssacre 5 місяців тому

      @@CampingGuidance There are so many good flashlights! If you had a price range in mind, I could list my favorites. Lately, my gotos are Sofirn's listed above, and Wurkkos WK03 or TS21. I think Sofirn/Wurkkos/Wuben are the same company. They seems to make pretty good quality lights at an affordable cost (Most $25-$50). There are also great lights from SureFire, Streamlight, Olight, Convoy, Fenix, Nitecore, and ThruNite just to name a few companies.
      The tent seems awesome! I haven't gotten to use it other than setting up in my backyard. I think it'll be perfect though. I really like the front vestibule area for keeping my Dometic Fridge out of the sun and elements (if not in bear areas). I'm really looking forward to using it this summer! I only wish it was a little taller in the vestibule area (I'm 6'2"), but I have the same issue with pretty much every non cabin then. I don't think I could have made a better choice for a tent though. I really liked it for the pack size as well. I had been using a Evanston 6 screen tent, but it was just too short for me going in and out after I injured my back. So, then I thought a Coleman Elite Weathermaster 6 was a better choice since it had a side door. Well, yeah it's easy to get in and out of, but I hated it's assembly, and its pack size was just ridiculous. I was having to take my 4Runner for even shorter trips because the tent was too big to carry along with everything else (yes, I overpack because my friends don't bring or forget things 😑). I used the Gazelle T4+ a few times, but it wouldn't even fit inside the 4Runner when it was packed. I wasnt comfortable leaving on top of the 4Runner when we parked to do other things. Too easy to steal. So, that's how I ended up choosing the Wawona. :)

    Worth noting: lanterns with discreet brightness levels have predictable durations ... continuous brightness level is nice for customization, but the disadvantage is that you can't be sure of exactly how long it will last since your output was customized. Which one is better is a matter of opinion, of course. :)

    Back from a 3 week trip and catching up with things.
    As usual, this is a fantastic review. 10 for 10 on the amount of info! the LEDLENSER lantern is indeed impressive, and it is my type of camping gadget that have non-proprietary replaceable batteries. Even better, you can get a 18650 AAA battery adapter so that in a bind you can use 3 AAA batteries to power the lantern.
    On an upcoming camping trip, I'm going to go old school and try out the Coleman white gas (naphtha) camping lantern and stove that I found in a garage sales. Hopefully they are not going to blow up on me LOL.

  • @mrwayneright
    @mrwayneright 12 днів тому

    I like the objective testing you have. However, Lux and Lumens are not the same thing. Lumens indicates an intensity of light emitted in all directions by a source. An omnidirectional source or a 360 degree source will emit more lumens than one that projects light in only 90 or 180 degrees around the source with similar hardware. In LED a manufacturer may use about half the number of LED chips for a small angle design. For a traditional lamp like incandescent, halogen or something light that the lumen emittance is nearly spherical except toward the lamp base. LEDs are more of a point source, but with more of them arranged in different directions, or using a reflector, the mfr. can approximate a 360 degree or nearly spherical distribution. LED offers much creativity in shape of lamp and distribution. Lux or footcandles is a point measurement at a given distance from a source. LUX is approximately 10x that of Footcandles (FC). The fact that your testing of lumens vs Lux at a short distance is sometimes close in value is coincidental.
    HOWEVER, comparing lamp to lamp, same meter, same distance, same units is a perfectly relevant study.
