There is a lot of talk about ARs, Let's face it, ARs are popular. People by them because they are cool. However most people don't know what they have in the form of an AR-15. It is very important to match the barrel twist rate e.g. 1:12, 1:11, 1:9, 1:8, and 1:7 with the right grain bullet (it's stamped on the barrel). A slower twist rate barrel like the 1:12 and 1:9 twist rate will not handle a heavy grain bullet like the 62 thru 77 grain bullet. The heavy grain bullet in slow twist rate barrel will cause over-pressuring issues in the weapon. Matching your bullet grains to your AR allows for proper bullet flight stabilization. On the down side, if you have a slow twist rate AR, its probably not the rifle you should be using for hog hunting. The faster twist barrel like the 1:7 and 1:8 will safely handle the heavier grain bullets like the 62 thru 77 grain bullets. So bottom line, match the proper grain bullet per proper twist rate in your AR.
I'm going to have to disagree with you on the 1:9 twist. One of my rifles has a :9twist and I have shot different grains and my s&w m&p15 sport 2 has shot the best groups with 75grain bullets. There have been many tests done on the different twist rates and grain bullets and the 1:9twists have proven to shoot great with heavier bullets.
Great video guys. Correct Ammo and Shot placement is king. Still sticking with 308s and 300 Blackout for Hog hunts for myself. But it can be done with 5.56 and you guys just proved it.
I picked up a .300 blackout upper for my AR to specifically use on Hog Hunt's and I have had great luck with this caliber. I was using Hornaday's .223 75gr BTHP ammunition and it did work fine but this .300blackout ammunition performs amazing.
Safety, safety 👍 Glad you mentioned it. I've hunted since I was young. I started my son hunting when he was 7. He was carrying a bb gun. I never released him to hunt on his own until he was 17. I wanted him to know how to be safe, use a compass, because GPS does not always work, how to hunt, where to hit his target, and how to communicate if lost due to radio going dead, or if he forgot his compass coordinates to the truck. Enjoyed your explanation of the hunt. Too many guys have asked to go hunting, without a firearm, and no idea of clothing needed to stay warm. So I give them a list. Needless to say, none have ever asked again.
I should have added that our ARs have a 1:9 Twist barrels. So, the experts tell us that nothing heavier than a 69grain round for accuracy. We know what works for us and it's the 55/62 grain Soft Points and shot placement.
Know this is an older video but I just wanted to say that this is awesome guys! I've seen your previous videos in the past talking against the .223, and I must say that I do understand any concern that you did have. People using light weight (45-50 gr.) varmint bullets are not using the right bullet for the job if they are hunting anything other than prairie dogs or coyotes. Having taken a few deer with the .223, I will say that your heavier rounds (64-77 gr.) in a soft point or like a Barnes TSX configuration are very effective killers. I would even say that some match rounds would work, but the problem is that they can shred, causing unnecessary meat loss. Just as you have stated, shot placement is always key, but on a hog, it can be even more important. That's why you have to be completely confident in both you and your weapons abilities to take the shot you are about to make. Awesome video, and keep up the awesome work!
Is the .300 Blackout an acceptable caliber for hunting hogs at Independence Ranch? I have a congenital hearing loss and therefore I am told to keep the sound as low as possible so I use the Blackout round with a suppresssor
I've been using the 223WSSM cartridge a lot lately. Using Barnes TTSX in 62grn with RL15 and sending them out at 3780fps. That makes quick work out of every hog I've shot. With the largest hog being 180lbs. The area I hunt is wide open; so a flat shooting caliber is required. I really like the AR-15 so when I came across an upper chambered in 223WSSM I couldn't pass it up. The 223WSSM caliber at 300 yards has the ballistics of the 5.56/223 at the muzzle. The 5.56/223 has some good loading options for hog size game, maybe not the best option for a 800lbs pig but it'll kill most pigs. Anyway I look forward to a Texas hog hunt this September. Cheers!
62 grain HPBT will drop any hog. Who hunts with a fmj ? There lays the problem, proper ammunition and proper technic, holds true with any caliber or hunter I would think...Hope they are rethinking the ban on 5.56.
I am heading down there in November and am taking the Barnes TSX 62 Gr. I have a box of that Trident stuff they mentioned in another video just in case. That stuff is 64 Gr. and basically the same type of bullet make up as the Barnes.
All about bullet construction. A light jacket 75 grain target bullet won't do well for pig hunting. A 53grain TSX will do very good. .223 bullets I'd consider ok for pigs or deer size game are Barnes TSX, Hornady GMX, Sierra GameKing (that's not as desirable as the solid copper expanding bullets). FMJ and thin jacket varmint or target bullets would be poor choices.
Glad to see you are allowing this caliber for seasoned responsible hunters. Next time I'm out I hope you'll let me show you that a 200+ hog is possible with a .22
At the ranch, what distance should I have my scope sited in at? I keep hearing a mix. 100yd, 25yd, 5yd. What is the average distance these hogs are hit at?
Specifically which .223 ammunition is considered acceptable? I have seen the videos on the G2 ammo. Thinking of booking a hunt with you but want to use a good ammunition when hunting hogs elsewhere too. I'm only a few hours away from you. Only two rifles I have are a 30-06 and a 5.56.
An AR15 is a platform not a caliber or cartridge. It seems your using the term AR in replacement for 556/223. An AR15 can be many different cartridges.
I used the rip out ammo at the ranch shot one in the head knocked it out but ten minutes later got up and ran off so if u use one double tap that to make sure I personally won't hunt with the .223 again. .458 socom is the way to go
you want "fair" hunting for feral hogs? No wonder you have a problem. These are FERAL HOGS. Not game animals. 3 rounds in the mag is just plain stupid when going after hogs. Good luck
If you limit semi auto rifles to 3 rounds of 223 yet say you want hunters to remove all the hogs that's an oxymoron and a dangerous proposition on foot in the field. Ive seen large hogs taken with barnes tsx 77gr and g2 rip both took multiple chest shots and a herd of hogs charging you doesn't give you much option for head shots.
I only run cheap fmj and jhp’s my 5.56’s. I’ll run expensive subs (Hornady) and supers (Barnes) in my .300 and I also run a .308 Ar-10 when I’m stand hunting. I kill hogs year round.....probably three to four a week at the ranch, coming in a close second to the .308 the cheap .223 makes some of the most explosive pass throughs on those animals I’ve seen. Also the point is to exterminate them. Load a full mag up. This is Texas, not California.
I noticed when you took your shot it appeared you weren't wearing your ears. AR's are extremely loud and your rifle wasn't surpressed so I take it your not practicing proper firearm safety/awareness.... lol!!!

Very good. I like how you made a 3 round rule and stated what type of ammo to purchase.
Throughout history every gun started as a military weapon and become a hunting rifle the ar is no different makes a fantastic hunting rifle

Cameraman: "Hey, let me film your back while you shoot that pig."
at 25 yards the bullet is still rising an adjustment probably wasn't needed may shoot high at 100 now
Ya he doesn't know the trajectory... at all.
Yeah I agree. I do a 50yd 200 zero. Need to shoot low at 100.

I really love this video Ranch Boss! Speedy thank you for walking us through this hunt from start to the successful end! Great shot brother!
Does this mean you are allowing us to use .223 at the ranch now? Just a couple weeks earlier than this video was taken, they said it was verboten.

Ar 15 works. Shot placement is the key. I prefer my 308. 50 to a 100 yards with an ar15. I like head shots.
So is the ranch now allowing hunting with a .223/5.56?? Thought this was a banned caliber.
With the proper round, it is now allowed
What is the proper round?
any round made for hog hunting; different manufactures
bullshit...any .223 round can drop a hog if you know what your doing...
If is a big word and covers too much ground. We want results and .223 for most shooters cannot drop a hog.
3 rounds sounds dangerous to me
Great video guys.
I have a American tactical ar15 chambered in 300 black out, I also have a 25-06 that deer and bear hunt with, can I use those?
What scope are you using here?
Glad to see you are allowing this caliber for seasoned responsible hunters.

20-30 Yds avg distance
@@RanchBoss Does video mean that you are now allowing us to shoot hogs there with .223?
I use a 22lr CZ 455 and they go down easy with a good head shot.
thanks for the heads up. we were just planning to go out. I wanted to take a hog with my AR. I know winchester makes a heavy 223 round just for pigs.
Can we have some specifications on what is considered a proper hog hunting round?
77gr Sierra match king, with 1:7 twist or faster barrel.
or 6.5grendel, or 300blk, or 458socom
So you're good with a 6.8 SPC AR-15 with the proper ammo? I've been interested in coming to your ranch but my hunting rifle is 6.8 SPC.
My ammo of choice is 110gr. Accubonds.
Don Taylor yes your gun will do a good job. Thanks
Independence Ranch what about my 22lr with a 50 round drum?
Which firearms would you recommend most? ar-15, ptr91 .308, SKS 7.62x39, or 12ga?
what kind of ammo were you using
Great video will be coming to check you out
what is the proper round for .223/5.56 to hunt hog? Also for .243?

The MSRHunt Channel true, with a quick barrel change, my 556/223 can become a 308.
H Se dumbass
Jesse GIII doubt he even owns an ar15
can i use a 6.5 creedmore
John A. Martin yes you can
I used the rip out ammo at the ranch shot one in the head knocked it out but ten minutes later got up and ran off so if u use one double tap that to make sure I personally won't hunt with the .223 again. .458 socom is the way to go
Thomas Miracle I call bs you knocked out a hog with 223 then later got up. You know how ridiculous that sounds
RIP ammo sucks. That's why.
May I use an AR style shotgun?
Yes you can
@@RanchBoss Also, what slugs do you recommend?
@@kajnrider9598 any will do

does that mean you've missed your ban on hunting with AR platform?

How many times do you have to shoot at something before you hit anything
It'd be better if there wasn't any talking or explanation
True , can come across as slightly patronising.......................
another great video
Good video when I get the chance to go hog hunting I'm taking the 6.8spc and ar10
Me and my dad plan to book a hog hunt soon and maybe some axis
He simply wants you to use a hunting round (expanding bullet) not a FMJ round.
Do we have to bring an atv we are big time hunters but don't have a atv
hmmmm why aren;t you wearing your saftey orange while walking around.
good stuff
I'm going down to you guys when I save up some money. I'd like to do this before I join the army. I prefer the 308 or the 7mm. drops them faster
Great video. Good shooting bud. Nice humane hunting here.

I've killed hogs with a 22lr, a bow,a center fire rifle here in florida, cant tell ya how many in the last 40 yrs
both of you are bullshitting me if you think its that easy to find hogs in the brush.
Trigger pull at 0:52 is cringe to say the least. Hoping that's because he's nervous in front of the camera.
Use G2 Research .223 RipOut Rounds.
