    I own the 50r and 100s and BOTH are fabulous! I returned from 50 days traveling in the Yukon and the Arctic and both cameras not only worked flawlessly but the images are fabulous. Even in the snow, yes, snow on July 13th, heat, bumping around in the truck on over 2000 miles of ruts, holes and gravel! 9500 images later and I couldn’t be happier.

    Cool to see that I'm not the only one that has their EVF in B&W/Monochrome. As much as I've wanted a Fuji GW690 for over a decade, something like the 100S is the better choice in the future, for me, when I upgrade from my XT-3.

    I’ve had it about a month, and it’s really growing on me. Looking at images on the computer is one thing. Prints are quite another. After a couple weeks of shooting, I made 3 16x20 prints. They are amazing. The resolution and quiet contrast puts you into the scene. I love it for landscapes. I do mostly tripod shooting and I am a slow worker. The GFX 100 feels tailor made for me.

    After ordering a few dozen rolls of 120 last week I've definitely been looking at the Fuji and Hasselblad digital medium format bodies again convincing myself I can save money by spending money. The gallery I work at just had an exhibit open and one of the photographers sent 3 images shot on the GFX system. When I saw the images in the gallery I was really just blown away by the color, and the Director and I were standing there talking about how great the prints were. I talked to the woman who did all of the prints for the gallery yesterday and she said the photographer just sent her the RAF files and she only did some tweaks for printing to the images. Basically she was sold on the system and is thinking about getting a body "for the artists in residence" but really so she can use it.
    I'd really love if you could get your hands on a 907x 50c to put through the paces too. I love shooting waist level with my RB67 and I'm really curious how the 907x feels to someone that has spent a lot of time with film medium format and done some of it waist level.

      I’ve been thinking of doing something similar. I bought a Mamiya 7 a few months ago and I love the results but the costs associated with medium format film are killer. I’d really love a digital solution, and I’d shoot 35mm for the analog itch.

      I did use the 100s and the 907x. The feeling is obviously quite different. Some things I noticed subjectively: The Hasselblad is recognized by people who are even not photographers. And they ask for the „moon“ story. Does not impact your pictures but well… ;-)
      Regarding the lenses and tech, the hasselblad lenses are smaller and the 907 has no IBIS. But then the leaf shutter causes so little vibration that I could almost shoot similar shutter speeds. They are loud though (especially that older XCD lenses).
      Also the 907x was running through batteries quickly and it got warm in the hand. Not hot but noticeably warm. The screen and UI are amazing. Oh and one thing: it has contrast detect AF so it is way slower (in bad light indoors) than the GFX100S.
      All in all, the hasselblad colors were amazingly accurate using even auto white balance and in the most complex lighting conditions. But I did miss film simulations.
      Could go on and on… drop me message if you like to chat. ;-) Both cameras are incredible in their own way.

    Would love to see a video dedicated to using M glass with the GFX. I think the 100s is a bit overkill for me because the files would likely bring my computer to a halt, but I have been looking at the 50s and 50r and adapting many different film lenses to it. Thank you for this video and continuing to share your journey with us - inspiring and beautiful content as always!

    I bought my GFX100s and the GF 45-100mm f/4 pretty much as soon as it came out. The 45-100 is a fantastic lens. The use of the ACROS film simulation is awesome. The camera allows the creation of some truly fantastic photos. The menu system compared to my very user simplified EOS R5 and R6 is a learning curve. The menus contain what you need. But, you have to be able to find what you are looking for in them. I agree with you on the tactile elements of the dials and buttons, they could use some improvement. The inability to use the lcd to tap thru menus is kind of a pain. The autofocus and eye detection work good, although, slow compared to my Canons.

    I think dollar for dollar the GFX 100S is probably the best performing digital camera on the market today for printing really large or for files that require a lot of cropping. I owned one for a brief period of time but just couldn’t get inspired to use it and found myself gravitating back toward my film cameras. So the GFX 100S got traded for an SL2 that will mostly be used with M lenses.

    Matt, fantastic video on the GFX. This might sound silly, but I really wish you would get a Leica M10M. I think it’s the perfect camera for your B&W work. Vintage Leica lenses work wonderfully on it. The tonality is amazing and its effective resolution will match any color 100MP sensor. Plus the digital grain at ISO 25,000 reminds me of real film. It would open up all sorts of new creative options for you that you just can't get with any other camera. Used prices are going to come way down as the M11M is on the horizon.

    Thanks Matt I’ve been interested in the GFX line for a while and nearly bought a 50R recently when I changed systems. It was the same price as a much older M240 (go figure!), but I went with the Leica mostly for size. I reasoned that I wouldn’t take the larger GFX out with me as much and as it’s my only digital camera and now main camera (cost of film) it had to work on that front. Interesting nevertheless and the images were, as always, sublime. Always look forward to your videos, thanks and best wishes, Ben.

    In the end it doesn't matter what you use to capture the image but for some reason the GFX system didn't give me the same level of satisfaction as my Hasselblad did. In the end I just sold it and picked up an old CCD digital back for the Hassy and it's been amazing, switching from film to digital on the fly is great. There's something special (to me) about CCD sensors, I'm starting to look at scanning my negatives with the digital back, I mean the Pakon, Noritsu and the Frontier have CCD sensors in them too which is making me curious about the process.

  • @patrickjclarke
    @patrickjclarke Рік тому

    I'll be honest, I don't get the allure of the GFX when it comes to sensor size, or as a Pentax 6x7 replacement as I hear a lot of film shooters on UA-cam talking about.
    I'm not talking about shallow DOF. I can get that f/0.95 - f/1.2 look on Full Frame. And I'm not talking about MP either. 45MP+ is available on multiple systems and I don't know how much I would actually need something bigger than 45MP if I'm being truthful. But the thing that keeps me going back to medium format film is the tonal range (and detail associated with it) the bigger negative has, and the GFX system just isn't THAT much bigger than FF to reap the reward. Back in the day, most photographers didn't think 645 had THAT much advantage over 35mm, but I think 645 is just a skosh better than my Sigma Merrills and Quattros for tonal range...but going to 6x7, I feel like the tonal range is SO much better and you'd have to go to the Hassy H6D-100C to even start getting close.
    So, that has made me question the need of the GFX...If I needed more MP, I'd keep my Leica glass and get an M11 and have a much smaller body and a much broader selection of lenses.

  • @ofelipeschuler

    I have a dream. And in this dream, I photograph with a medium format digital camera as Fuji or Hasselblad's...I don't know for sure, but the texture in the pictures looks different, in a better way. I don't think it's the high resolution only, but the combination with the sensor size also...

    I won't say that your samples from Fuji camera worse but they're definitely different to film scans in terms of color and tonality. Thanks for this video Matt. I'm looking at as close to possible digital replication of the Pentax 6x7, in particular with 105 for that sweet subject separation. Thinking about the GFX 50R and adapting the 105 to it...hmm

    • @patrickjclarke
      @patrickjclarke Рік тому +1

      if you are looking to get the shallow DOF/subject sep of the 105, then find an f/1.4 that will cover the sensor (to get an f/1.1 equiv). But you could get a full frame camera like a Leica M and a f/095 or f/1.1 (TT, 7A, Voigt, Leica) and get the same separation. But none of those, including the GFX is going to give you the tonal range of a 6x7 negative...the closest is the Hassy H6D-100C but that's some $$$.

Films works for me because I love making contact prints followed by final prints in my darkroom wether that’s 6x7 or 4x5, it’s all part of my process and I love it but if I need to be fast, shooting and turnaround, I’m picking up my dslr. I think as photographers, we can learn a lot from filmmakers as they will just select the right tool for the job whereas we fixate on one thing and argue for that one thing.
