I wish the Oscars would give 2 noms to an actor if the work is deserving! I think Chalamet is excellent in both films :) Thanks for watching and hope you consider subscribing for more reviews!
I made another video about the best actor Oscar’s which you can check out on this channel (wink wink like and subscribe hahaha) but to spoil it - yes I think he is the favorite to win!
Bob explains it pretty clearly himself, in these 2 verses from "Up To Me". Your review is very well thought out. If I'd thought about it I never would've done it I guess I would've let it slide If I'd paid attention to what others were thinkin' The heart inside me would've died I was just too stubborn to ever be governed By enforced insanity Someone had to reach for the risin' star I guess it was up to me
I’m enjoying the various reviews surfacing, and yours is thoughtful, makes me want to see the film even more. I’ve often bought into the label of Dylan as enigma. Maybe he isn’t an enigma after all. That’s just a media and fan label attached to him because they couldn’t tie him down to a single, easy descriptor. When you actually look at his story, it’s pretty standard American Dream type stuff. Small town kid runs off to bright lights of the city to chase a dream and succeeds. Then realizes it’s not all he thought it would be, becomes a bit jaded, reclusive with media, and just keeps reinventing his art like most great artists do. Dylan didn’t invent any of this. He just happened to be exceptionally good at it. And amid all this, he was busy having six kids, going through breakups, divorces, and being a pretty normal human being like the rest of us. And when you hear from the people closest to him, he had his anxieties, vices, insecurities, a sense of humour and mostly just wanted to play rock and roll. The myth, enigma thing is mostly a media fabrication.
@ Wow, 2X is quite the endorsement just a day after release. I’m def gonna see this, but will wait for the crowds to thin out a bit. Been doin some short covers of his songs to tie me over in anticipation of the film.
@ u feel like u r a fly on the wall. It is done so well u feel u r there with him The acting is superb all of the acting Chalamet especially u believe this is Dylan
Nice review. We're in agreeance on many things. Mostly, your insight that letting the music tell who Bob is was a brilliant choice - not least because the music is so good. And as you reiterate, the title kinda clues ya in to the approach.
Good take on this. Loved the film. Maybe Rimbaud, Chaucer, Shakespeare, DiVinci and Michelangelo themselves WERE the art too, but due to the medium and technology of the time Dylan was able to reach more people in a shorter period of time with the songs causing people to ask “Who IS this guy?”and “ Why does he speak to me so?” The price he pays is these emotions touched the messianic nerve in millions of people.
Thank you for the kind words! :) I hope you consider subscribing for more reviews including Nosferatu Friday, Nightbitch and Babygirl this weekend, and then my worst and best of 2024 coming out Monday and Tuesday!!
"they paint Dylan as an asshole." Yep, because he can seem to be one. His art and who he is becoming is far more important than almost any relationship. I saw all this in a concert in Shreveport last year. A lot of the audience was there to validate their memories of their own personal Dylan. He comes on stage and tells everyone that he's not doing the old songs, just his newest songs. That's the Dylan who Mangold and Chalamet present, and it's the only real Dylan. Enjoyed this movie a lot. But like that concert, if you seek the myth in this move, it's not there. BTW I'm Not There is a great pairing with A Complete Unknown.
Yep 100%. I saw Dylan earlier in concert this year. He performed at a festival alongside Nelson. And Dylan came out, played the piano and sang for an hour. Never addressed the audience and then walked out. Whereas Nelson was lively with the crowd, having fun, and leading the sing alongs of his best known songs. Dylan is who Dylan is. And trying to explain that is useless and the least interesting part of his life. Thanks for the kind words! Happy holidays and I hope you consider subscribing for more!
I want to clarify. I believe the artist does matter but not in the context of we need to explain how the artist came to be and rationalize all his decisions. Rather, this movie focuses on the artist just existing and wandering through a period of time. In that we understand the spirit and angst of the artist but we don’t need to understand why he is so rebellious or so much refusing to sit still.
What if you live your life like the art is you? Don’t we reinvent ourselves over time? Everyone can imitate Dylan because he is the voice of “Everyman”. You can’t imitate Freddy Mercury of Caruso.
He should be nominated for best actor in Dune P2 and The Complete Unknown.

I loved it!!! Terrific portrayal and great movie! So fascinating!
I’m now an official fan of Dylan
If, like you say,the person behind the art doesn't matter, why have this bio pic, "based on a true story" movie?
To learn about the person's life and times, which informs the art, and to learn about the people around him, who are not singing his songs.
