  • We're continuing our journey northbound along the Sea to Sky Highway. We've just left the Sea to Sky Gondola and will pass through Squamish on our way to Whistler. Come along!

    Excellent video and quality. I am planning my first bike ride from Squamish to Whistler and this video allowed me to see in details all the climbs and decents to expect along the way. Thank you for the video. Extremly helpful and much better than just looking at elevation charts.

      Thanks for stopping by. I had never thought it could be used that way. You made me remember a funny thing that happened during this drive. At one point I accidentally made a wrong turn (edited out of this video) where I headed up a side road up to Whistler Olympic Park that was hosting a bike race. I was the only car and I think I wasn't supposed to be on the road at the time. I kept seeing all these bikes coming down the road going the other direction and giving me a dirty look. Maybe one day I'll post the incriminating footage :-) I just didn't see any signs that day that the road was closed but I realised it half way up the side-road.

    At 7:22 you went to the closest point reacheable by car from Mount Garibaldi (~7-9 kilometers east), one of the only active (albeit dormant) stratovolcanoes in Canada. Part of the Cascade Range, it's most recent long term period of activity was during the last glaciation. Removal of the ice cap left the west flank unsupported and eventually collapsed, leaving a huge scar that can teach on what is inside a volcanic mountain. Later eruptions filled the scar a little bit. No eruptions in the last 4000 years.

      Now that's an obscure fact :-). Thanks! I would never have known that.

    What a wonderful drive. It's no wonder that the Sea-to-Sky Highway is considered one of the most scenic roads in North America, even though the Vancouver to Squamish section gets much of the credit for that.
    And interestingly enough, my post comes exactly one year after this video was recorded. I doubt you would find Whistler occupied like it was one year ago, given COVID-19 concerns and all. Without the tourism, the locals whose livelihoods depend on tourists are probably hurting economically. Hopefully things can get up and going there once the pandemic concerns wind down; in fact, I would love to visit British Columbia someday.

      Brandon Claridge It's interesting, just the other day Facebook reminded me (as it often does) that this trip took place exactly a year ago when I logged in. I went for a quick 4 day trip during last year's Victoria Day long weekend. Went to see science professor/television presenter, Brian Cox'es show in Vancouver on the friday night in Vancouver and went to the Armin Van Buuren concert on the Sat night. Then spent time driving around taking footage like this too! 🤗

    This is an awesome stretch of road to drive! It might be before or after this particular part, but I remember there being some turns so tight that it reminded me of the Needles highway in South Dakota a bit. Loved it!

    I thought Sea-To-Sky Highway would have been busier and should have been twinned all the way up to Whistler. This didn’t look too bad. Also has RCMP figured out who cut the cables? It was a really heartless act, wrecking havoc on a small town’s tourism.

      Trans Canada Phil thanks so much! My husband and I will be travelling in BC this year and I will definitely have to try that with my GoPro! I do have the GoPro brand suction cup mount but always too chicken to mount it outside the car lol.

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  4 роки тому +1

      @@jacquelinek6432 I haven't run into any issues using a suction cup mount on the outside. I've driven in snow and rain and it's pretty solid on the windshield. I put it on the outside because with the wide-angle lenses that these small cameras have, it was the only way I found to get a good unobstructed view without any dashboard in the shot.
