The film flashes back between two different Eras.
In the beginning at the auction of the Rohan estate it is 1943 with the two characters in military uniform who strike up a conversation.
The paintings in the auction are of Lord Rohan and Clarissa Marr. The story goes back in time to when they were alive which was during the Regency Period, the years 1811-1820 in England.
The story returns to 1943.
