- John Junkin and Kenneth Connor star in this 'them-against-us' sitcom about life on a building site and the skirmishes between the exasperated site foreman, Charlie Cattermole (John Junkin), and the workforce led by chief labourer Gussie Sissons (Kenneth Connor).
This episode - "A Little Bit on the Side" - Mr Cattermole asks the men to work the weekend, they all make their excuses and Mr Cattermole gets upset, he accuses them of doing a bit of moonlighting on the weekend. The men all go to the pub for an after work drink, they see a young lady sat on her own and decide to keep her company. The girl explains she needs her new flat decorating, they all say they're about to help when they see Mr Cattermole in the corner watching them. The next day Gussie goes round to the flat, as does Charlie, Fred, Arnold, Walter and Stanley , they all realise they had the same idea, to worm their way into the girl's affections...
Broadcast 8th October 1970
I'm 74 don't remember this. Looked Maddy up she's 75 now. Beautiful woman.
Maybe it's just a pilot.
.... OOOH I SAY.... I remember Arthur Mullard in YUS MY DEAR I was maybe 7 or 8 years old... " Magic Arr' Morris" Good Solid Days... Then Elvis Died and Now look Where The World is... COME BACK ELVIS!!!... 1:32
@@darkarts59... On " SITCOM AIRWAYS"...
Is she drinking bloody Mary`s?
she looked great in Vampire Lovers
I'd never heard of this before, but I got all nostalgic in the first 5 minutes! Remember the days when wages were in cash in a brown envelope, and your bosses would occasionally plead (and pay well!) for anyone to work on a weekend rather than taking it for granted? I'm 55, but I feel about 80 now! 😆
Great upload. Even though I'm a huge fan of the British sitcom, I've no knowledge of this series. Would welcome seeing more. All huge names back in the day.
I can't recall this particular show but it was well worth the watch.😀
They certainly were huge! Cooo!
I don't remember this show, but i definitely remember the very beautiful Madeline Smith ❤ i had a huge crush on her back in the day ❤
Valerie Leon. High Karate aftershave advert.

Never heard of this show. Thanks for educating me!
Fantastic!! Never Seen This Before, Always Great to See Kenneth Connor
Never heard of this series but was worth watching just for the gorgeous Madeline Smith!
Maddy Smith. Now she was a very early boyhood crush. Her & Valerie Leon..
Hai Karate ads were awesome.
As a young lad I couldn't understand why the Men didn't want Valerie Leon to ravish them.
You like beautiful buxom women then?
@@davidmacgregor5193 most definitely..
I remember this series very well!, one of my favourites back in the day, thanks for uploading as it's great to see it again, classic British comedy that sadly couldn't be made today.
I grew up watching classic British television during the 70s but this one is something that completely by passed me, saying that though, anything with Madeline Smith in from back in the day, is an absolute must watch for me as, in this case she was only 21, I don't think I have seen her look so beautiful, she was a young boys fantasy back then, now in my 60s I can appreciate her even more!
I had the privilege of meeting Madeline a few years ago and she was utterly charming.
@@johndownton5932 Nice
A tasty Bird !
The opening and closing aerial shots show the building of housing estates in Garforth on the eastern outskirts of Leeds.
Thanks. That was exactly what I was looking for when I was scrolling through the comments. Not sure why the location is always the first thing I want to know, but it is.
Never seen or heard of this show although I was around at the time. Had to watch as I have always had a huge crush on Madeline having first seen her in The Vampire Lovers, Taste The Blood Of Dracula and Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell.
Up Pompeii, also, as Erotica. Titter ye not.
There were some excellent television shows produced in the 70's, Unfortunately this show isn't one of them.
Agreed but it's still funnier than anything produced on main stream TV in the last 25 years
Its always good to see kenny connor in anything hes in
I enjoyed that i would like to watch more of the series if possible
The late John Junkin: also a noteable comedy scriptwriter. Good combination of cast.
Sad effort
@lordeden2732 😅😅
@@user-oi6ln4eq7b Great writer
Kenneth Connor in transition here, just on the cusp between the game young bantam of his 50's and 60's performances and the elder statesman of his M Alphonse years.
On The House - starring Kenneth Connor & Madeline Smith (1970) 11.9.24 Doin' a foreigner....LoL.....boys from blackstuff and auf Wiedersehen probably pilfered from this show a few ideas as well as filthy rich and catflap etc...
Great upload - love seeing the ones that have been totally forgotten/unseen for decades like this, It’s pretty bad of course but in that tacky early 70s way which is quite watchable, the “old” man character is like a Poundland version of Clive Dunn
Yes, who in 1970 (young or old) was really still wearing the stereotype ragged scarf and flat cap combo? I was 16/17 in 1970, but have no recollection of this series. Kenneth Connor looks completely different to his normal appearance.
There was another sitcom featuring builders called Cowboys. It starred Colin Welland and David Kelly.
I remember that one. Shown in the week on ITV. Remember Roy Kinnear being on it. We used to talk about it at school.
I vaguely recall that comedy with David Kelly and Colin Bellend. @@Raider577
Loved that show must have been about 1980?
Never heard of it either. We must have been too busy helping young ladies in distress out back then 😂😂😂
Nice to see Kenneth Connor acting instead of a full act of silly noises
Love these old sitcoms and ones like this never heard of or seen would have been before I was born
Maddaline Smith,,could've turned elton john straight ,,she had it absolutely beautiful 😊
Nah, EJ's a shirt lifter forever
She was stunning.
I don't remember this one at all, I remember most of the '60s and '70s which this was made in. Madeleine Smith is a lovely woman, I've met her on a few occasions, she was beautiful but never stuck up.
Madeline Smith was absolutely stunning, a real English Rose! Beautiful
Incredible what Madeline is wearing you wouldn’t bat an eyelid seeing in the high street today there’s nothing new under the sun, I really must brush up on my wallpapering , must have been one of Kenneth’s favourite “rolls”😂I wonder if this was only on certain ITV regions hmmm?
Right out of left field - I have many rare British sitcoms, but I've never heard of this one ! Thanks for this real rarity - You haven't got any of His and Her's also featuring Madeline ?
It was on in 1970 I was a school child I remember my mum talking about it because she liked Kenneth Connor . He was in those carry on movies . But i have never seen it until now. Thank u .
Kenneth Connor MBE (1918-1993) How fantastic was he 😊 I'd love to see more episodes
I wonder if this tv series got a dvd release 🤔
Maddie Smith whose dress James Bond opened with a magnet in Live and Let Die.
'Talking of charlies, take a look at that lot over there!' Quality.
It's interesting, it's Kenneth Connor, between the Carry On films and series, and Allo Allo. Never seen before.
I was 10 can remember seeing it am guessing my dad watched it if Madeline Smith was in it.
only on for the beautifull madeline
But of a forerunner to Auf Wiedersehen Pet in some ways, maybe the inspiration for Wayne?
What a cast- like a who’s who of British comedy. That zoom in and Connor’s trademark gurning are such a throwback to the 70s. Like a window into another world, but sadly not really very funny- it’s more of a light hearted drama than a sitcom for a live audience. Good find- I’d never heard of it.
You can’t go wrong with good old Kenneth Connor can you?
Shows you how much crap they spewed out back then, we only remember the classics.
Better times 🍺🍺
I remember it ive been looking for it but couldnt temember the title .thanks for uploading
Brilliant!!!!
It must have been shortly after this that Madeline starred in The Vampire Lovers!
That came up in a conversation in work the other night. A colleague was trying to tell me only ugly women appeared in horror films. 🤷♂️
@@EricTheBlue61 A colleague...who clearly has not seen many horror films.
Any more of these? As I know they all still exist
..that would be very good . .
Patrick Troughton guest-starred in one episode as a mad German professor. A reference to his 'Doctor Who' character was made.
Never even heard of this ..great stuff .
Gorgeous Maddie
They should have called it "On the Building Site"!
Touch of dad's army too!
Do you have the rest of the episodes for this? Been wanting to see this for ages
Haha that young lad looks like my cousin did in late 70s my dad used say wolfman is here
Madeline Smith was and still is a gorgeous looking woman...
Gordon Rollings good actor
How British TV survived this I'll never know?
Birds of a Feather was still to come.
British TV is dead at this point in time .
On The House - starring Kenneth Connor & Madeline Smith (1970) 11.9.24 the show opens with early doors of a Friday....
Would this have been on ITV ? Was it shown nationally ?
Tommy Godfrey - also in Love Thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language.
Like most here I don’t remember this series at all - not a classic but great talent and Maddy Smith!!🔥🔥🔥
Only discovered this one second ago!!!
Anyone else think Stan looks like Guy Martin.
Yes. And he also looks like a werewolf
@@MikePhillips-pl6ov 😂
As Sid James had a hit with bless this house they were probably hoping to have another hit with carry on star Kenneth Connor. It wasn’t his fault, it was the poor writing.
..compared to what is put out Today ...this is comedy Gold . . .. lol
'On The House' started in 1970. 'Bless This House' started in 1971.
It shows the age of this sitcom that Peter Attard who plays the young, trendy ladies' man is now eighty years old.
terrible , apart from maddy smith obviously
youre joking ...do you prefer 'Man like modeebs' do you? . .. lol
Not one of the classics, from an era of classic UK comedy
Madeline smith was definitely one of the fittest women on the planet in the day... She's still fit today
What 1970 Wolverine was up to 😅
Something wrong here. I don't remember this.
However, there was a very useful early DIY programme in the early 1980s called On the House which served me very well with the first property I bought circa 1986.
Madeline Smith, Paula wilcox, Sally geeson and Jackie piper were all gorgeous.
I didn't know Wolverine was in this
I've never seen this in 77 years.
57?
What exactly was the bit about the sink plunger alluding to?
You've got a sub out of me for this.. well done.
Never heard of this sitcom and not really surprised but any glimpse of life back then is welcome. BTW is that Clive Dunn of 'Grandad' fame?
It's actor John Normington, playing much older like Clive Dunn, but not written as well...
@@Porsche962C Ah ok thanks yes this is pretty bad isn't it?
@@markwardel6751
Still better than the rainbow propaganda that masquerades as comedy these days.
Brilliant cast actor's
Does anyone know a site where we can get all eps of these series? 👍
Interesting amount of talent making a naff low budget sitcom, seemingly badly directed... Kenneth Connor of Carry On fame and Madeline Smith, as she rose to fame and reliable John Normington. Interesting name comes up as "Produced and Directed by" a young David Mallet... Odd to think that by the end of the decade, when video became huge, Mallet would be directing music videos for Queen (Bicycle, I Want to Break Free), Blondie and Joan Jett. Also directed for Billy Idol and the "Ashes to Ashes" and "Fashion" music videos for David Bowie. Unsuprisingly left TV sitcom behind very quickly...
Do you have the other episodes of this?
an Oughter dramatic role by Madeline,😮💨
I don't recall this show
Never heard of it.
... Guy Martin's Uncle 1:31😂
Madeline Smith, totally gorgeous like a lot of those sexy 1970's actresses.
Madeline Smith is achingly beautiful.
Were all british comedies from this period just old men lusting after young girls?
Mmmmmmm ......it's pretty pervy ....and disturbing you can see how Savile went "undetected" for so long the white hair guy looks like her grandad .....
Comment didn't post ....I said it looks pretty pervy and disturbing ......no wonder Savile went "undetected" for so long.......the white haired guy looks like her grandad.....
There wouldn't be any working class accents on telly if it weren't for those posh actors pretending to be everyday people
True. Also note the characters tend to be caricatures and pastiches. They are not us. There is an American term for it, 'uncanny valley'. Note much the same could be said of any (old) Ruling Class character on TV. Writers write middle class characters. It is rather like how all women action heroes are essentially male characters played by women. The arts are 'owned' (as the kidz say) by the Middle Classes. Often back in the day those radical rebelling pop-groups came from Middle Class background.
@@clangerbashertrue...... once read a an article on Coronation Street back in day saying the writers / producers really went to town with the northern stereotype flat cap wearing ferret down the trousers clog dancing on the coal house roof character 😂 still makes me laugh....I'm northern btw and I'm not laughing at northerners....
@@azillliasmith2734 Yes. You can see it can't you? Think about it more broadly. Look how many of our problems come out because the 'middle class' have a view about how the world works, implement plans based on that view, and then see them fail because their plans don't reflect reality on the ground.
Kenneth Connor looks and sounds like a vaguely cockney Bob Mortimer.
Agree with the majority of comments on here:
1. Had never heard of this show but watched pretty much everything in the 1970s.
2. Good cast, poorly used
3. Though I prefer a lot of British TV comedy 1960s-1980s (and especially 1970s) to today's, this was definitely not a classic up there with (of a similar era) Steptoe, Dad's Army, Hancock's Half Hour and others. In fact it's pretty awful.
But a nice look back to the early 1970s. Working men all drinking bitter and from pint jugs!
They don’t make’em like this a anymore,thank god 🤮
Unfortunately this is pretty poor. Despite some great comic actors (notably Kenneth Connor) the general impression created here is that of a mediocre amateur dramatics performance at the local church hall. Poor script, direction, and production values are the culprits.
For you.
No wonder from the comments nobody knew about this. Probably only lasted for this episode & got cancelled!
Absolutely awful!!
His fake sideboards !
I think you mean sideburns. Sideboards were in the front room where you kept the best china.
@moretimeneeded56 It's both, I still call them sideboards too.
not fake , i called em sideboards too tho
@@1969gawa You are not alone a lot of people do and it an accepted alternative to sideburns, I do myself sometimes. It’s just that to me it doesn’t sound right. I imagine two bits of furniture stuck on the side of the face.

Unreadable Clap-Trap. Learn how to speak English Grandad.
Cowboys with Roy Kinear similar
Utter tripe.
Made over 50 yesrs ago and yet I'd take this over the woke garbage that stinks out our telly nowadays
Maddy's all right, but the rest isn't worth watching.
Never heard of this. It doesn't seem to be very good.
It's a shame how Smith and so many 'posh totty' types who made a career from their physical charms end up seemingly spending their latter years resenting their former objectification regarding it all silly and demeaning
That's women for you.
Complain when Men desire them, complain when Men don't desire them!
Not true, people like Madeline Smith & Valerie Leon are happy to talk about their past roles, they're realistic enough to know that they were employed for their looks. If women do complain about the roles they were offered they'd have good cause to, women were either depicted as dolly birds or battle axes in these types of shows. Not only that, a lot of sexual exploitation went on, the so called 'casting couch'. Men weren't generally objectified as sex objects so why should women have put up with it?
