    Decades after I first saw this movie, it still gives me chills.
    The music. The actors. REAL aircraft, not CGI.
    Phenomenal efforts to tell the story with as much accuracy as any movie can permit.

    • @MarkHarrison733
      @MarkHarrison733 Рік тому +2

      The actors were all too old, and the tiny models looked so fake.
      The film is not at all accurate, as Galland and many others confirmed.

    This film the Battle of Britain needs a thorough 4K Restoration and be shown again in U.K. cinemas like they did with The Great Escape a few years ago
    So if there is anybody at MGM UA reading this ,there are 9000 of us on a certain site dedicated to the making of the film who would love to see this happen . Crowdfunding has even been discussed which just goes to show how much support there would be too
    Wouldn’t it be nice to get that internegative out of the archives ( the one with Maurice Binders titles ) , restore each frame and then give it the remastered BLURAY Stereo soundtrack with any 4K release given the deluxe treatment of being able to see the film either with Ron Goodwins film score and/or Sir William Waltons in its entirety.
    Give us the chance to see this film on the big screen again for new generations to see. The tv screenings don’t do it justice .
    Is it not Park Circus In the U.K. who handle these film distributors restorations and has not Amazon taken over the MGM/UA catalogue ?
    Surely there must be some finance around to undertake this 4K restoration rather than go the crowdfunding route. . I did hear that it could cost up to £50k to do a restoration for a 2 hr long film and that’s a mere drop in the ocean .
    As most of the aerial shots were filmed in 70mm , I just wonder what this film would look like today on an IMAX screen which would be quite something as the film was released in the super Panavision process.
    After all, if it wasn’t for the Battle of Britain film , all the restored original planes we now see at air displays today , simply would not exist . It set the ball rolling for restorations worldwide so it’s importance as a film can never be underestimated

  • @astonmartin8706
    @astonmartin8706 Рік тому +15

    Interesting to note that Sir William Waltons score was used in the trailer so this must have been finalised a few months before the premiere in September 1969. Then Waltons score was rejected and all the stops were pulled out to get Ron Goodwins score which he managed to do in three weeks but WHAT A SCORE !!!
    Goodwins quintessentially british Spitfire and teutonic german themes showed absolute brilliance in their composition and are played at RAF events and at Remembrance services every year.
    Although Waltons score was regal and Henry V in concept it didn’t quite match with the visuals although to pacify Sir Laurence Olivier ( who suggested he compose the score and who threatened to take his name off the credits when he found that Goodwins score replaced it) agreed that ten minutes of Waltons score was used near the end for the 8 minute Battle in the Air sequence and his regal music used in the end credits music b4 segueing to Goodwins.
    When the film got a national release through the Odeon and Gaumont cinema circuit on September 13th 1970 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Battle , what was on screen was incredible to watch .
    A magnificent piece of film making and as mentioned in a previous post on here deserves a restoration in 4K so we can all see it again on the big screen

      Yes. It’s what struck me when clicking to view this. What about all the iconic music? They made the best decisions in the end. The battle in the air sequence with the Walton music could almost be an equivalent of what Christopher Nolan aimed for in Dunkirk. It conveys the feel of the battle and its terrifying disorientation to the viewer, in both cinematography and score. The Goodwin score outside of that fits the overall picture. (Loved being taken as a kid to a few of Goodwin’s own concerts in the 70s to hear all his classic scores).

      They filmed it in Spain, using Franco's airforce which was still using the old Heinkel 111s used by the Luftwaffe in WW2. I think the film company bought all available planes that could fly or move on the ground and it was said at that time it was something like the 7th biggest air force in the world!! To film it amongst the planes they equipped an old American bomber, think it was maybe a Liberator but I could be wrong, equipped with cameras in the old gun positions and they flew it around amongst the arial manoeuvres.
