When I think that 40 years ago the world was divided between those of us who called these "boxes on wheels " and the modern image fans who criticized our outdated "kettles"! Today, I’m still in love with steam, but so glad to see these great diesels saved as part of our railway heritage. I guess I too have grown older and wiser. Rats, gronks, hoovers and peaks, I love them all ! Thanks for sharing.
Those 6 pot Sulzers....so evocative. Takes me back to the 60s when the GE introduced them. Displaced my gorgeous Thompson L1s. Good to see the 58 as well. Only once saw one in anger, hauling a Freightiner into Felixstowe Docks.
Shades of the euston to Aberystwyth summer Saturday trains of the 80s. Pairs of 25s took over at new st up until 1984. It switched to 37s from summer 1985. There were 2 of 3 diagrams each week. The 56s and 58s were regular performers on Sunday new st to nuneaton drags in the same era when euston trains were regularly diverted due to engineering work and 40s weren't uncommon on Sunday manchester to brum trains as rhey were always diesel hauled, again I think due to maintenance.
@forrestrobin2712 early to mid 80s. I went round crewe works in 84 and they were still building the last few 56s at the same time as the 58s were coming online.
I was only commenting on the 56 drags from New St on Sunday’s recently on here. If I recall correctly back then it was the only way to gain 56 haulage. State of art Freight loco’s back then and far superior to the dullest looking BR loco to enter service the ‘58’ 😂

It was great arriving in the car park at Kidderminster thar morning and hearing the Rats idling - very nostalgic.

Exactly the same as I thought,class 40s replacing my beloved duchesses,but love the diesels now noisier the better!!

What was the issue; not taking power, or brakes not releasing?
Not sure - I was too far away however suspect brakes myself however stand to be corrected.
