I think this is one of those important points to take in as a developing artist- offen we see the finished product and or a time lapse or speedpaint of someone’s work and think unconsciously that we should finish a piece in the time of a short video. For some yes they master it to where they can finish a piece in a day. But usually for stuff like this it could take weeks or more of constant development and redefining different spots. Like it takes time not only to get good but also to create in general. It takes great patience and endearment of the craft in itself. Matched with the algorithms and posting daily, its just really unrealistic to keep foot while keeping your mental and not getting burnt out or frustrated. Do continue practicing to get speed but not haste
It's also fair to keep in mind that a lot of these splash artists never tried to play the algorithm or daily posting game. Of course that can feel mandatory for artists these days, and I think it's good to share work and post regularly, but getting hired at a company like Riot as an illustrator is a very different path than growing a social media following. If making splash art like these is your goal, then you should be prepared to step out of the internet chatter for months to years while you hone your craft, posting irregularly just to keep some momentum but not with the main priority of growing a following.

A majority of them go from Greyscale to Color, and then a lot of lighting effects. This is a lot easier to manage and I think it'll help you out. I think studying HozureArt and AnninoSJ and their more casual pieces is a really good way of studying how Riot artists strategically place their values in pieces that they're getting out within a few hours or days, rather than the 4-5 weeks (sometimes 8-12 in an older interview when they were working on the Miss Fortune splash art reworks)
Yes, I had classes with one of the RIOT splash artists and it is a sketch, line art, greyscale, render the grey scale, color then lighting and all the special effects and adjustments at the end
Studying riot splasharts literally frame by frame for the most part (some speedpaints are on UA-cam) taught me one thing and that there isn’t a simple and quick cheese for it. These are most often are Chinese artists and if you ever came in contact with the aggressive art market of Chinese digital artists you know how long these people can dedicate to art daily. The lesson here is that you either have the patience and dedication to do it or don’t, there are minor tricks here and there but in the end what matters the most is how much you want to dedicate yourself to this.
UA-cam algorithm brought me here and I am glad I watched it. This is some good content that brings about believing the process, taking small steps from just rendering the faces to slowly working your way outward into a full illustration. Very nice.
ever since AI began to be used by so many people, i wanted to give up art, then i switched to 3D modelings and animation, then OpenAI released Sora, i gave up 3d too, but it's not too late, when i got back to art, i am still good at rendering, i am still worthy!
The way you describe your desire the cheat rendering is pretty much what impressionism is all about, the illusion of detail. It'd be cool to see you make a video studying that style of painting.

Dude this is the first time I saw both your art and your tutorial and im so glad your using krita unlike the other's who used Photoshop or CSP it really show's that art is not made only by paid software's but also can be done free with just enough tools you can do anything.

Really glad this video exists because i have never really found someone else with the same problem of wanting to make a detailed piece but not having the patience for it. So many people are able to sit there on one drawing for hours and hours and i literally start losing patience after 2 hours. I dont know how they do it
Is also worth noticing that there are also lots of people working on the design of the champions and giving feedback to the artist who does the splash, so I wouldn't be shock if there are probably about 20 people or more ending up working on making the splash arts, and they take their time, so is basically not posible to just do it in one hour or two.
that's right out of your behind, they do it in a few hours kit-bashing together a Frankenstein of images and then paint over that. Don't spread miss information go to school.
@@danielmartart Yeah they usually spend 1-2 months per piece and get feedback from the other artists working there because they are trying to make the best possible product. Source Hozure and Coldburger when they used to stream(Hozure still works there and Coldburger used to work there, both do splash art). It's why Kienan Lafferty left he didn't want to work on the same painting for an entire month.
tip : once you get your rough line art you put distinct colors for each obejct/bodypart on an other layer. That way if you want to just select the arm or a glove you can just use the wand on that layer.

I think the best way to improve rendering is to build your art up slowly. It was mentioned in one of deiv calviz' courses. He would usually start with his base colours, apply all the lights and ao passes and then move on to the rendering phase. This just makes rendering more enjoyable and less complicated as most of the information you need is already there, you just refine it slowly.
Hello fellow artists! I installed this game exactly because of art. I even thought that these pro-artists use 3D and then draw on top of it, I should look for more of their time-lapses :) hearing how many hours such work takes is a bit relieving hahah

Amazing work! If you want to push it like 10% further, consider changing the arm on the left of the screen, it doesn't read very well in the silouette, and all League characters have very strong silouettes in their art work.

I feel your pain on people just going on that its AI art or traced after spending pain staking hours to get your art just the way you envisioned it. I spent 16 years drawing. I've gotten so good and people just got its AI i fucking hate it. =__= it really kills your love for it but. I've stopped doing art for people to like I do it cause I love it and I enjoy it and it relaxes me.
Your video is very interesting, but I think there is a very big detail why it is too difficult for you to achieve that effect of the Riot artists, and I will try to explain it as easily as possible, and that is that you try to paint as if it were to paint an oil painting, and that is very difficult to achieve in reality and even digitally, I don't think that the Riot artists take too much time in their color process, they only have to take time, as you already mentioned, to create the composition, but basically the way they have to create their splasharts is to make the image in gray scale with all the details, then they only create and place a color gradient to each part such as a gradient to the skin, another to the clothes, another to the sky, another to the building that is seen behind, etc. That with base colors, then with more saturated colors they add the details that will add a lot of improvement to the image, they add lights, more marked ambient occlusion, and finally lights like reflections or where the lighting is too visible, or to the fire they add more brightness and saturation, etc. The difficult thing here for those who don't know is to create the illustration itself, especially when it comes to anatomy and even when the composition includes animals or complex perspectives. But the color process is really easy compared to the above mentioned. It is time-consuming, yes, but not as time-consuming as the time it took you, try doing it that way and you will see that it is really simple, with what I saw in your video, you know enough about anatomy and in general you know what you are doing.

For example: Illustration from LEGENDS OF RUNETERRA by RIOT GAMES, Art Director : Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic, Sketch : Chris Kintner & Gerald Parel, Artists : Gerald Parel, Monika Palosz, Chris Kintner & Hugo Lam. Not saying it isn't impressive.
Total noob artist here, but what I see on a lot of amazing artists that render really well is that they do more with less. Less brush strokes and simple shapes that say a lot. I believe that is why it takes so much time, you have to think trough. Also the years of experience.

Im extremely curious as to how many layers to use. I want to learn more about rendering in this style and the way a lot of the masters seem to straight up paint on what amounts to one layer really surprises me. Maybe I’m wrong, but a lot of the times, it seems like they just paint everything and slowly clean up the art and don’t bother with too many layers.
I use very few layers. After sketching i merge my sketch layer with my base color layer, and then i have the background on another layer. Sometimes ill add a few layers after the painting is done for like glow effects or something like that. Riot artists however use a ton of layers because splash arts need to be perfect, so different elements all have their own layer and clipping masks. But unless youre doing professional art, i think its better to use fewer layers since youll be more efficient, simplify more, and theres more room for merging shapes/shadows in a painterly way.

for someone that has used AI first and then learn how to draw later, don't stress too much about ai or some rando saying it looks AI since we (AI "artist") if they are good enough make pieces with no mistakes but will still look AI (adding to much detail, anatomy errors, shading error, rendering errors) you should be proud of being a real artist and be in full control of what you draw
Patience during Rendering is the core of Splash art. I have looked at Bo Chen's work and it was insane how much time he spent on rendering.

Always when I get tilted from the game I just open my Inventory and scroll trough the artworks, they are so beautiful and fill my artist heart

I think another important aspect of splash art is composition of the character, colours that pop and the dynamic lighting😅
Gotta remember that they might spend a week on one splash, sometimes with help from other team members to finish off pieces, do post process etc.

for someone that has used AI first and then learn how to draw later, don't stress too much about ai or some rando saying it looks AI since we (AI "artist") if they are good enough make pieces with no mistakes but will still look AI (adding to much detail, anatomy errors, shading error, rendering errors) you should be proud of being a real artist and be in full control of what you draw
