Something funny about Power Battle, here in Mexico it was quite popular, since here we had Pirate Arcades that were called "Maquinitas" and emulated various arcade games, and many times there were Japanese games there. KoF was extremely popular.
Those CPS1 multigame clones popped up everywhere, bleeding into USA as well. It's why Power Battle was on there since Power Fighters was CPS2 only and those boards couldn't be pirated as easily. Finding one of those 50-in-1 cabs with the cgi ganguro girl is how I first played Power Battle, myself.
@@TheBlackSeraph These games make even the most shoddiest fangames look like masterpieces in comparison. The problem with MAGMML as a whole is that it's far too long despite being a community project. Some of the early levels shouldn't remind you of the Mega Man DOS games, and even then MAGMML is one of the few good fangames out there due to you know, being one of the most advertised that can actually be played. Corrupted is in development hell, and there's that other fangame known as Mega Man Unlimited. The Hard Hat trilogy of fangames have their own identity as you play as a disgruntled met fed up with Wily's shit. Would rather play Hard Hat III over Mega Man 3 on DOS.
In case anyone's actually curious about Megaman soccer... yeah no the game is just hard by default because despite both human players and cpu players being locked ot only 2 super shots (Shoulder button + shoot) the CPU will always try to hit the blind spot of the goalie without fail. Though J's end game password made him gloss over the fact that instead of weapons you actually recruit the bosses to your squad! And thats important because in other modes there's only premade teams, although they do feature characters that aren't in the story mode (Including an un-selectable dr wily that is never usable because they forgot to program in the unlock flag!)
Boy was there a massive disagreement with me on Battle and Chase there. It's less of a normal racer and more of a duel racer, because you're only facing off against one opponent to take specifically their parts. And absolutely no mention of how you get items from shooting at minor enemies, how there are secret parts to collect in certain alternate paths and how the Japanese version has extra content mainly in its presentation like proper character stories. Felt more like a "I tried a couple races and didn't have much to say so I'll call it mediocre" bit of laziness in my opinion.
True that it's incomprehensive, but on the other hand it IS a "all the rest" sort of video that just sweeps over stuff that doesn't fit in a separate video. From the sound of it he gave it a try, and it didn't impress from the get-go because from the sound of it, the formula it's going for doesn't explain itself very clearly, and may not have as wide appeal as a Mario Kart or Crash Racing-esque game. It will have people pass it by.
Battle and chase's difficulty is quite devious... in the map select screen there's actually a difficulty meter, each time you win a race track that one specific opponent will become harder up to a maximum of 4 times, after which they'll max out and only be selectable when the mysterious DARK RACERS come to challenge you in exchange of a hint about game mechanics (not worth it, they are translated sloppily and are incomplete) and a chance to find the hidden kart pieces exclusive to the story mode, which are how you unlock the second hidden character in the PAL version
Came here both for the Game Gear and DOS Mega Mans! I was a kid in the 80's, so asking my parents for "the new Mega Man" resulted in both the original MM Dos, and the Game Gear game. I can't say I EVER finished the DOS game (not sure it IS possible), but I adored the Game Gear game.
1:23 Mega Man (Game Gear) 6:14 Mega Man & Bass: Challenger from the future 9:50 Mega Man's Soccer 11:52 Mega Man Battle & Chase 13:35 Mega Man the Power Battle 15:40 Mega Man the Power Fighters 18:40 Super Adventure Rockman 22:22 Mega Man (DOS) 23:15 Mega Man 3 (DOS)
I appreciate what you said at 23:51. Yes, these older games are technically worse. However, _these_ were made almost decades ago for less powerful machines, had a handful of people working on them and the series had lower standards. Meanwhile, most modern games are made by an entire team, have a massive budget and are part of a franchise that has big expectations. It's less about which game plays worse and more about which one disappointed people more.
Fun thing about Power Fighters: The endings are slightly different in co-op. Each combination has a variant or completely unique version of it. Battle only has one player's ending followed by the other.
Agreed that context is important. It's amazing how games released in the last 10-15 years with top production values and the full backing of a billion-dollar company can still end up being X7 levels of dross, while demaking X8 to SNES graphical style improved it loads. Effort beats hardware every time, and Mega Man most of all has some amazingly solid fan games.
Mega Man: The Power Battle lets you choose what order of bosses to take on. The game cycles through the stages automatically, but you're free to select a stage while it happens. There's just a time limit for how long the boss picker can spin before making an automated decision, otherwise you are free to interrupt the process by making your own choice.
Curious if Mega Man Soccer was made in order to cash in on the hype of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. There's always been an avalanche of soccer games every 4 years for the World Cup, but it felt like 1994 had even more than usual.
Super Adventure Rockman’s best contribution was laying the groundwork for the adaptation in the Archie mega man comic. I really liked that arch in the comic and how it helps transition the story from mega man 2 to 3. Pretty neat and now I miss the mega man comic 😢
You missed Wily & Right no RockBoard: That's Paradise as well as a few pre-Appstore Japan-only feature phone games. It's possible those DOS games have some competition! I guess Megaman is one of those franchises where no matter how thoroughly you dig into it, there's always a few more titles that even Capcom's forgotten about. Great video, though! It's good to see some of the obscure games getting some recognition.
There's also the upcoming Evercade Alpha bartops, one of them preloaded with the two Mega Man arcade games. There was also a stand alone PS2 game release that collected both Arcade games that was only released in Japan (likely rare because NOBODY talks about that one, ha ha). And lastly, Capcom had a Mini Desk Arcade console that had a bunch of Mega Man and Street Fighter games...The two Arcade games being included. But the Arcade 2nd Stadium is by far the most accessible atm.
Funny thing about the DOS games Mega Man and Mega Man 3: The Robots Are Revolting is that a few years ago a fan remade them together as a single game in the classic NES style (and redesigned all the levels). It was actually pretty okay, in a way Mega Man 8-bit fan games tend to be fairly solid pretty often.
Oh my god. I haven't played a DOS game since the mid 90's. They had such a janky feel to them even in the 80s, and this video just brought back such disgusting memories
Yeah, and there was the whole "Video cards, let alone displays, aren't standardized" thing as well and some of the early color graphics are AWFUL (like red/green/yellow/black being a color palette at one point). I...honestly didn't have the best personal experience with MMDOS. Imagine the janky graphics in an orange monochrome display (Or, pretty much, Virtual Boy but orange instead and on a computer monitor). But I agree with J that MMDOS > MMX7 in context (even with said experience I had with MMDOS)
@@fojisan2398 This was a palette in early color graphics in DOS called CGA in 4 color mode. There IS an alt palette but that uses cyan/magenta/white instead of green/red/yellow (in the respective swaps). And those colors are across ALL sprites and backgrounds instead of how the Spectrum handled graphics
Well, thems the brakes with long-running IPs like Mega Man. You're always gonna get some obscure or off-branded shovelware that only the most diehard fans would know if they're really curious. No jab at you though J, good video dude.
I have the PAL version of Battle and Chase. And there is more to it than you think. Example is that certain tyres are better on certain ground types (example Ice Man's on Ice), you can eventually take the body of another drivers car, and you end up taking on Wily at the end.
10:33 I never get people being annoyed with megaman soccer? Who wanted Mario to jump into a kart? who wanted Sonic to be on a pinball? I don't think the concept is that odd for 90s videogames. IT IS ODD, don't get me wrong, but if gameplay was good I don't see the problem with a harmless spinoff. Heck, I even enjoyed it a bit as a kid, although I remember lots of powers being really cheap and most of the game feeling "incomplete". I don't know, perhaps it has something to do with me being from Argentina and liking soccer (Fútbol) games at the time. Tiny toons Acme all stars was one of the best.
I really do hope you atleast attempt a 1cc of both mega man power battle and power fighters cuz credit spamming arcade games really isn't the best way to judge any arcade game imo (even metal slug yes) Turns this into a replayable experience rather than a one n done like you said Also dude, the games are literally in the Capcom arcade stadium collection vol. 2 and you can buy the games individually instead of the whole pack, no idea how you missed that lol
Megaman DOS may be the Zelda CDI equivalent of Megaman but I actually would like to see a remaster of those games. I bet Steve Rozner could do a better job if he had a small team of people.
Your closing argument on Megaman X7 kinda got a bit stronger because it was announced that Megaman X Legacy collection 2 broke the million sale barrier. This means that Megaman X7 effectively sold a million copies.
oh what the hell Megaman Soccer was SO FUN!! I rented it so many times from Blockbuster as a kid. I still remember all the special kick moves using all the different robot masters lol
My favorite thing about battle & chase is the song "kaze yo tsutaete. It would go on to be Roll's theme in the first Marvel vs. Capcom game and would get an official english cover in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Genuinely one of my favorite songs in the franchise
I remember enjoying megaman soccer as a kid. When you defeated a team, one of the players would join your roster. They all had different stats iirc so some were better for defence.
I like to say, "You can focus on aspects of things in a bubble, But you can't seperate the things around the bubble." Meaning you can isolate and experience something on a personal level or focus on it's particular characteristics but the influence and effects they have outside that focus will always remain around it. For example, you can focus on Sonic Forces level design, story and quality but focuses outside those such as when it released, how it released and overall series history still exist and effect how that game is viewed. Basically context matters. Context definition con·text noun the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed. "The of choice of food was decided based on the context of how much they could afford."
What's crazy about the GG Mega Man, that despite it being released exclusively for NA markets, it was developed in UK. Kinda bizarre that there never was any Euro or Japan releases, especially the latter consider that Game Gear was a lot more successful in Japan, like Sega Saturn.
Craziest thing about MegaMan3 DOS? We actually have almost the whole roster of robot masters from it in official games now. Waveman in MegaMan 5. Blademan in MegaMan 10. Oilman in MegaMan powered up. Sharkman in Battle Network. And Torchman in MegaMan 11. Here's Hoping MegaMan 12 gives us Bitman.
The arcade games are included on the Switch for the arcade compilation, $2 for each game and you can buy them individually or via a complete set with other capcom arcade titles, also I'm pretty sure they weren't exclusive to Japan, I mean even the mame version has them in English and titled Mega Man not Rockman.
Fun fact, a lot of USA arcades have rom arcade machines. They almost always have Power Battle 2, sometimes 1. As a kid-tween me and my brothers put countless hours into power battle just because we liked mega man and arcades 😂
a little footnote that might be worth touching on. the two arcade games power fighters are buyable on capcom arcade 2nd stadium also they both have co op which is pretty cool.
"No easy way to play the Mega Man Arcade games" Yeah, about that...J, may I introduce you to Capcom Arcade Stadium 2? It's a fantastic package containing many of Capcom's finest arcade titles as well as the obscure, and among the selection is Power Battle and Power Fighters.
Mega Man Soccer is a guilty pleasure. It's a soccer game with bosses from 1-4 (& Enker), and music from 5 with original scores for the different fields (which are good). I enjoyed it for what it was, but the worst part was the game being released unfinished. Aside from Wily being unable to be play-able, there's also no ending. When you beat the game, it goes back to the title screen. Shame really.
Game Gear Mega Man is pretty rough to get through, but the graphics are really cool. It's neat to see the NES era sprites with additional details and shading!
Mega Man The Power Battle did get an arcade release in America back in the mid 90s; I remember playing it when I was 7/8 back in 1995 at Celebration Station. I had a couple of the classic games for my NES, so finding a two player boss rush version was like a glorious fever dream for my brother and me.
It is a personal belief of mine that in order for a console or handheld to be considered as such, they need to be able to play certain games. Doom is an excellent example of this, but Megaman is one of those few games that I judge using this. I have Megaman 2 available on more consoles and computers than I can probably even remember, even once saw someone made a demake for a Calculator. All of that just to say that the Wonder Swan is official in my book. Welcome to the club, you absolutely forgettable handheld.
Rockman battle & chase( yes , rockman) is better than you think . In Japanese ver. It has 2 announcers during race (and yes , they announce in JP language , so no announcer in other version.) For the gameplay , in story mode it seem easy to beat other racers but the difficulty was increase for the last part CPU racer and their circuit was fking hard that no room for any mistake.
Pretty interesting what you said towards the end where X7 came out around the same time as the Jak and Ratchet sequels. Imagine if we got a Mega Man game that resembled those.
I dream of a world where that was possible, but I wonder if Capcom would've poured the money and effort poured into those games into any Megaman game... even if a set of stages like Ratchet & Clank feels like it would fit Mega Man X incredibly well.
Its like when people in Zelda videos comment on the CDi games being the worst... There's little reason to even compare the mainstream Zelda games to the weird ones on CDi.
If you didn't already know, Capcom forgot to include the ending to MegaMan Soccer, which strangely was included in the Japanese version. So if you beat it you would probably had been more disappointed.
Soccer isn't horrible for the time it came out. I remember enjoying it but you have to beat the masters, form a team of Mega Man and the Masters to beat Wily. It isn't for everyone though :)
The weird thing about Megaman Soccer is it isn't the only soccer game on the SNES with that gameplay style. Thanks to Banpresto, you can play the Battle Soccer series; all the same game but are crossovers of Godzilla, Kamen rider, Ultraman, and Gundam. Maybe someone really liked the idea of characters playing soccer idk
Honestly, I do want to see Mega Man's Soccer return. Might not be the best game in the world, but is there any reason it can't be added to SNES Online? It is somewhat common for lesser known spin-offs from big name franchises to eventually make their way to Nintendo Switch Online. It might just be a matter of time before we see it added alongside some other random SNES games.
I’ve played most of these, I think there are some good qualities for some of them. The arcade games were certainly good and pleasant to play, but I thought megaman and bass challenger from the future was fun, and the character development for bass was really interesting. Battle and chase had a really awesome soundtrack. I thought the soccer game was fun for a little while playing with a friend. And super adventure rockman had some cool moments, and had a really good arc in the Archie comics based off it.
11:46 - ... wait a minute..... did you go into the Enker match WITHOUT SWAPPING IN ANY OF THE OTHER ROBOT MASTERS YOU'D ACQUIRED??? Just a FULL TEAM OF ONLY MEGA MAN?!?!? Jeez, no WONDER you had such a hard time!
"Yeah, in this game you fight Wily and his robots, have at it." That pretty much sums up the Game Gear version. :D Jesus, that thing was such a wasted opportunity. I think I actually beat it, though.
The funny thing is that Soccer was likely released unfinished because it has the ending fully finished, but you have to use a Game Genie code for the game to even be able to play it. It's also thought that Dr. Wilyis supposed to be unlockable as a playable character because you can see his face just off screen when you pick team members, but it seems to never become selectable.
I'm always happy to see some love for Power Battle and Power Fighters, those games are so fun! Also, fun fact, I got to play a location test for Power Battle at a Chuck E. Cheese when I a kid! I already loved Mega Man by that point, so I was over the moon, and very excited when I found out both games were in the Anniversary Collection years later. Also, Powered Up is next LET'S GO!
The two Mega Man arcade games WERE released in the West. I played them back in the day at the Capcom-ran Nickel City arcades in the Bay Area. You can also play them today on current systems on Capcom Arcade Stadium 2 on Switch or Steam.
Out of every commercial 2d Mega Man that I've played (and I have played nearly all of them), the game gear one is by far the worst. Anyone who thinks there is a worse one out there has either never played this one or thinks the DOS ones are even worse. The DOS games are some of the only ones that Ive bever played.
I think it would be very cool if Capcom did what SEGA did that one time. Remember “Sonic Gems Cllection for PS2 & GameCube? You know the one that had all the weird and obscure old Sonic games that most people never played. It came out a year or so after the “Sonic Mega Collection” which contained all of the mainline OG games. Capcom’s should do like a “Megaman Signature Collection” (working title of course) just for one time only release a collection of all the DOS games, Arcade games, both Mega Man & Bass gamesc Mega Man’s Soccer, & Super Rockman Adventure (& just localize it) plus all the ones you never had access to. I mean if Capcom is not gonna do anything with the IP, then they could at least let the world experience the oddities of the franchise. Who knows it curiousity may even make it sell decently..?
Your review philosophy is interesting, though I don’t personally subscribe to it. Even compared to DOS games of their own era, the MegaMan DOS games are WELL below par. And some people were primarily PC gamers at the time. I knew a kid who only had his Tandy (no consoles), and his MegaMan experience as a kid was that DOS game. But that cane out the same year that Prince of Persia and King’s Quest V hit DOS!!! I guess it does reflect how little Capcom cared about their PC releases at the time. Meanwhile, some kids maybe only had a Game Boy or a Game Gear. You do have to compare like with like - and if you consider that Mega Man on Game Gear came out months after Sonic Triple Trouble… well, it goes to show that not all full-priced platformers on this higher-end full-color handheld were created equal.

@@malevb695Believe it or not, we specifically played CPS2, It was like 2007, so maybe it wasn't that hard to emulate it on arcade machines back then.
Game Gear Mega Man being bad isn't surprising. If old-school home computer games are anything to go by, US Gold's output absolutely does not glisten.
US Gold was a budget UK publisher which is why they do a lot of cheap licensed crap.
Now with the new patch
you can add freaking 99 Super Shots and have fun, or play a 99 minutes without Super Shot and suffer forever 💀
Megaman soccer is a classic. I am legitimately insulted at this review. Legitimately one of my favorites as a kid. Still have a copy of it
Boy was there a massive disagreement with me on Battle and Chase there.
Thank you!
11:44 "After hours of trying really hard"
Ah yes a classic Exoparadigmgamer reference.

10:06 I'm very sure the idea for a soccer game ft. Mega Man had something to do with the FIFA World Cup 94
The US hosted the World Cup in 1994. Capcom wanted to capitalize on that.
I came to find this comment about Megaman's Soccer and you did not disappoint. Kudo's on your history. 👍

I really like challenger from the future, the idea to play some stages with the screen flipped years before smartphones is so cool
17:58 You're wrong. The games are available as part of Capcom's Arcade Second Stadium. Which is available on modern platforms and PC.
MEGAMAN ON DOS!!!
This is something that will make you wanna quit!
You can thank Wolfenstein and Doom for making people take DOS gaming seriously.
Honestly when i think of the DOS games i think of the Mechanical maniacs and the old Megaman team fad.
@@TheLomdr God, ZX Spectrum palettes make me wanna puke
Megaman soccer was legit. As far as powers go just make Protoman your keeper. He stopped everybody but Enker and Elecman
I really do hope you atleast attempt a 1cc of both mega man power battle and power fighters cuz credit spamming arcade games really isn't the best way to judge any arcade game imo (even metal slug yes)
Turns this into a replayable experience rather than a one n done like you said
Also dude, the games are literally in the Capcom arcade stadium collection vol.
In Mega Man The Power Battle, if you put your name as FUC. After you hit start it changes to YOU
24:32 Not only have I played Mega Man DOS... I beat it... Back when it came out. XD
oh what the hell Megaman Soccer was SO FUN!!

I personally think Mega Man Soccer is underrated. It’s a fun game and it’s neat to build your team
The 2 Mega Man arcade games are on console. For only like $5 each.

The two arcade fighters are actually pretty fun.
READY ! megaman classic spinoffs . I loved the arcade ones power fighters power fighters, battle and chase.

At first I saw a few seconds of Game Gear MM and thought "Eh, can't be that bad". And then I saw the unholy word combination:

"No easy way to play the Mega Man Arcade games"
Yeah, about that...J, may I introduce you to Capcom Arcade Stadium 2? It's a fantastic package containing many of Capcom's finest arcade titles as well as the obscure, and among the selection is Power Battle and Power Fighters.
Boy I hope someone gets fired from that blunder.
I would rather play Mega Man on game gear over X6 or X7 any day.
Same
Same.
Sad but true 😞
Thank you for finally reviewing Mega Man Soccer.
It has 2 announcers during race (and yes , they announce in JP language , so no announcer in other version.)
For the gameplay , in story mode it seem easy to beat other racers but the difficulty was increase for the last part CPU racer and their circuit was fking hard that no room for any mistake.
Those Mega Man Arcade games are on the Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium collection available in digital stores.
Its like when people in Zelda videos comment on the CDi games being the worst... There's little reason to even compare the mainstream Zelda games to the weird ones on CDi.
ah mega man soccer, where they fked up the game so bad that the ending didnt work
14:50 The stages are not exactly random. Its a roulette you can easily stop at any stage you desire with enough precision.
23:45 swiming DOS megaman will haunt my dream for life
You know the Arcade Games are available on Capcom Arcade Stadium, right?
If you didn't already know, Capcom forgot to include the ending to MegaMan Soccer, which strangely was included in the Japanese version. So if you beat it you would probably had been more disappointed.
Soccer isn't horrible for the time it came out. I remember enjoying it but you have to beat the masters, form a team of Mega Man and the Masters to beat Wily. It isn't for everyone though :)
18:01 Actually, both Power Battle games are available in Capcom Arcade Stadium 2.
18:38 I will say, this game made for a really great arc in Archie Mega Man.
J makes the most cringy melodramatic comment ever.
The game is shown.
Me : Ok, his drama was 10,000% justified!
There is a far easier way to buy the Mega Man Arcade games as both of them are in the Capcom Arcade Stadium Volume 2.
I only bought the Megaman X collection, so I can play battle & chase
i had the megaman dos game too, it was beyond horrible, i was so disappointed
I’ve played most of these, I think there are some good qualities for some of them. The arcade games were certainly good and pleasant to play, but I thought megaman and bass challenger from the future was fun, and the character development for bass was really interesting. Battle and chase had a really awesome soundtrack. I thought the soccer game was fun for a little while playing with a friend. And super adventure rockman had some cool moments, and had a really good arc in the Archie comics based off it.
Crash team racing mentioned let's fucking go!
I loved Megaman Soccer lol
11:46 - ... wait a minute..... did you go into the Enker match WITHOUT SWAPPING IN ANY OF THE OTHER ROBOT MASTERS YOU'D ACQUIRED???
Great video. All my life, I wanted someone to make a quality video talking about Mega Man's Soccer and now my prayers have been answered.
