  • In this quick video we take a look a new fire lighting tool that I recently purchased. Made by Solo Scientific the Tinder Hot Box is a neat storage container for your tinder, but is also a parabolic reflector, signal mirror and can be turned into a makeshift lantern. So for anyone looking for a solid item of kit to put in a fire kit, survival kit or bugout bag, this could be an option. Thanks for watching...…..

    Hi Mark. Nice bit of kit. I suppose this would be a life saver if you were stuck on an island for 10 years. You can never run out of sunlight... mind that the mirror might get scratched over time with this design. A small improvement, I think it would have been much better if it had a secondary lid on the back for storing the tinder separately. This way the mirror would be protected better. Anyway nice video as always Mark and take care.
    PS: Tip for those survivalists out there, consider storing a tiny polishing paste tube inside the tinder box (5ml or similar) “just in case”.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  5 років тому +1

      Hi Edy, I hope you are well brother and had a nice weekend :) Yeah it would be more suited to a desert island, but they recon it works in low light and even at night with a headlamp. It is a certain bulb that is needed, but unfortunately I don't have one lol. I will have to make do with the once a year appearance of the sun. Good tip on adding the polishing compound. I used Autosol and it worked a treat. Yeah your right about the secondary lid to keep the tinder in. It wouldn't have to be very deep for a bit of charred cloth or amadou and would make a big difference. Thanks as always for watching mate, have a great week, all the best, Mark :)

    I am a big fan of solar ignition and own a Sundance parabolic solar mirror and have used it to good effect with char cloth. I think the Tinder Hot Box is a very well made product and works well but is very expensive when compared to other parabolic systems.
    I can't remember how much I paid for my Sundance but I bought it a few years ago and from what I can remember it wasn't that expensive. The Sundance is definitely a lot bigger and hasn't got the waterproof compartment which I love about the hot box.
    I have actually regulated my Sundance to a kit (my BOB) and just carry either Fresnel lenses or magnifying glasses these days, they are far more portable and less finicky.
    I love that neat little pouch Mark, beautiful, I am always on the lookout for little pouches like that.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 роки тому +1

      Good morning Orion, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. The pouches are a neat design and very well made. I think they were originally designed to carry axe pucks in, but I use them for the reflector and I have a couple more for tea bags/sugar and other small items of kit. They are made by Frost River, I will leave you a link to their website and you should be able to find a local stockist. I agree, the hot box was pricey. I think I paid about £40 at the time, but it was a one time investment. It's a shame we don't get the same hours of sunlight as yourself so I can use it more frequently. Have a great day, all the best, Mark :) www.frostriver.com/shop/adventure-everyday/built-to-last/buckskin-drawstring-pouch/

Thanks again Eric, have a blessed day, all the best, Mark :)

      @@markbailey2981 Well, though it may be true that we have more sunny days here than you do there. We do get some strong downpours here, but the sky usually clears up quickly. My sister and brother in law both lived in England as well as Ireland and My brother in law's parents lived in whales for many years. They were all there to spread the Word. Anyway, that being said, They were somewhat in your neck of the woods, so I understand what you're saying regarding sunny days.
