Holding an amp like that is way more awkward than I expected.
What do you think of the Framus Cobra? Have you encountered one with a failed OT?
Tried something new with the format of this video. What's the verdict? Snoozefest or interesting?
Oh and the speakers in the Cobra cabs were in fact 8 Ohm speakers after all. My bad!

I think I might be experiencing this right now 😬 just received my amp back today from a tech actually, so this video is extremely informative. But unlike your experiences, he’s a great dude, and I’m not faulting him. He replaced most of the electrolytic caps (at least the ones that swell and go bad over time). I jammed through his 2x12 greenback and h30 cab and noticed immediately some distortion on the clean channel that does not change whether how low the gain or high the volume knob lies. He tried changing the bias as I played and still distortion. Same with the lead, but this is even more interesting, as this distortion turns more into an undertone fuzz. Almost as if someone is plugging a fuzz pedal through the effects loop, with the volume knob most of the way down and blending it with the distortion of the lead. Again, bias did not solve this. This problem is also apparent on the crunch. From what I’ve noticed watching your video, the crunch opens up around 2-3 o’ clock. On mine, it is super saturated on 11 o’ clock.
TL/DR I think I’m having the same problem that you had. All channels are experiencing that weird distortion, even after changing the filter caps.

Oh man, sorry to hear you are having issues but having a good tech helps. If it's the optocouplers, he could test it by bridging the ones for the active channel and taking the other ones out of the circuit.
Good luck! Hope your Cobra roars again soon

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne update on my personal odyssey of this amp: amp still has the issue and I, myself, have become obsessive. Tech has replaced a coupling cap on the input of v1 that could cause dc leakage, but very weary if it will solve this issue as every other tech in town cannot spot the distortion/fuzz on an oscilloscope. Also, every tech looks at me weird when I mention anything about optocouplers. May have to resort to doing this myself.
Which brand and specific part number did you use for the optocouplers? Several h11f3 variants, but I’m not sure if there any differences regarding spec between them.

My V1 has a very “slo” style mid range that I love. Also found the EQs have interesting interactions with each other in groups, bass/mid and treble/presence. Pushing the bass up makes it almost a low mid control, and the mid becomes a mud control (almost like a pultec cut/boost effect)

It sounds beautiful. Sometimes I think what our mind generates as the expectation can really take us away from what it is. My presumption is a lot of people think they will hear killswitch engage right away not realizing those guitars are more than just one and your hearing how their rigs sounded blended into a mix which is not going to sound exactly as it did coming right out of one guitar into an amplifier that is being recorded by a microphone. Also a lot of times people miss hearing the actual sound on recordings because they are hearing the whole thing versus just a guitar. An easy example would be that when they did the eq for the track they made that eq compliment the bass and the impacts you’ll hear on things such as the snare, cymbals, toms, kick, and hi hat. Most guitar players love bass but it might not work in the mix and therefore they are wondering why they aren’t hearing the depth when they use an amp not realizing most of the deeper sounds were actually coming from a complimentary blend of bass and guitar in harmony.

I didn't remember the Framus Cobra sounding that good, actually, but just played it once 20 years ago. The clean sound makes me want to play the intro of Eighteen Visions - Waiting For The Heavens 😉 I really like the crunch channel, especially boosted. It seems to have a unique footprint in the mids.

    Nice!
I remember looking into the fx loop conspiracy years ago. The best I could figure was that folklore developed around people having phase or comb filtering delay issues with effects or gates because of the parallel loop, so setting the mix pot to full series fixed the issue... but that's typical of parallel loops. (The bare patch cable wouldn't do much unless the switching jacks' contacts are going bad... which happens).
I mean, the loop circuits are just resistors and caps, with the only shunt cap being the ~200pF or so Miller capacitance of the return tube's grid... which doesn't amount to much with respect to the loop pot setting (less than half a dB at 20kHz).
The extreme lows would change a tiiiny bit with the pot at opposite mix pot extremes since the coupling caps are different values, but again: not much and not audible... 1/gm, so under 1k, meaning shunt capacitance from a cable running from output to input won't do anything in the human hearing range... unless you used a 200 foot cable.
Last thing: I didn't see if you mentioned what tubes you are running, but it sounds like you moved away from the EH brand they spec'd stock? I remember them sounding wooly in that amp and I don't hear that in your samples.

    • @TheOtherJohnBrowne
      @TheOtherJohnBrowne  3 місяці тому +2

Thank you for putting the fx loop thing in context! It's great to now know the physical background to it! I appreciate it a lot!
Yeah, the stock tubes on this one were pretty deflated so I changed them all out. The power section now has Tung-Sol EL34Bs in it and the preamp has a mix of TAD (Shuguang) and JJs in it.

owned one way back when, bought used and luckily always worked, i have this memory of the footswitch and what felt like a 10metre cable 😄 didn't keep it too long in the end, for some reason i was buying various metal orientated amps, but was in an indie/alt rock sort of band, i think it culminated when i had an OG EVH 5150, the Cobra and an oldschool Peavey Ultra but i only really needed a clean and an overdriven sound , the cobra could certainly have done that, but that was when i got swayed into the whole world of pedals/pedalboards into amps

The Cobra is a SLO100 preamp clone, but the tone stacks are Baxandall EQs, it is an active EQ used in the HiFi world, and it can boost or cut frequencies, instead of the traditional Marshall style TMB passive EQ, that only cuts and has insertion loss even with all controls on 10.
It is more flexible than the SLO100, due to the switching options and dedicated presence controls for each channel. What happened to the depth controls though??
The notch filters are pretty much useless, it would be way more effective if they put the control on a pot instead.
The funny thing is that they took the useless series soldano fx loop and managed to make it more useless by making it parallel, I wonder what they were thinking 😂😂😂
All in all, even by copying the SLO100 gain stages, these amps sound nothing alike 😂😂

Thanks for providing some more technical info on the amp. From how effective the EQ controls are, I suspected they were active but I never bothered to verify it.

Great in-depth review and demo, as always. I totally get the love/hate thing with this amp. I had a Cobra half stack back in the early 2000's. I really liked the tones, kind of spongy like a rectifier and one of the few amps I felt I didn't really need to boost. IMO the matching cab did not sound very good, so you're not missing anything. I don't remember if it had greenbacks or v30's but It was thin and didn't project much bottom end. I can't really complain... my buddy was a Framus endorsee at the time, so that's all I'll say about that. I used it for about a year and eventually traded it off. I didn't have any issues but it was just too much amp for my needs and I knew about the reliability issues and figured I'd get rid of it before any potential problems.

I have that very same amp and model. It sounds good now, but it took a lot of work from a shop to get it to sound great. The guy I bought from, and I am guessing, but he had the bias really high and put low voltage preamp tubes. To me, I think he was trying to create a plexi. I bought a dragon on the cheap, and the amp tech basically stripped out everything and installed it in my Cobra. My cobra works and sounds great now. The thing is, I really don't know what the Cobra is supposed to sound like. Everyone I have known that has one, they had to put a lot of work in their Cobra, and all of them sound different. Just for poops and giggles, all four of us compared our amps, and they sound so different. The settings react differently. When I say different, I mean different, not by a little but by a lot. It's a great amp that is very troubled. It's such a great story, and I think most people who have owned one can relate.

I can't tell how close this experience is to the one I made with my Framus Dragon (which is basically the same amp). I bought it new from Thomann when they were selling them out. It had an issue right from the beginning (noise, no power). Got it back, good for a year. The first time I moved it from my living room to the rehearsel, the problem came back. This time i measured the bias - it had dropped to about 50%, all power tubes ok. Sent it back to Thomann with video proof, but they did not find anything and stated it worked perfectly. I decided to change the capacitors myself (my first terrible decision). Did so, but forgot to cut the excessive leads, causing a short-circuit, frying the PT. Framus had one in stock, to an exorbitant price. Found a company that could make one exactly to specs. Had en excellent tech, but after he exchanged the PTs it still wouldn't work. But he actually found out that the PCB had become conductive. So I was really happy with that. Now I found that the loop is not working, no signal from Send, probably a ground problem. But I am afraid of touching this amp again, exactly as in the video. So nice to see that I am not the only one with this experience. Cheers!!!! Wonderful video, btw!

Finally a solid review of the Framus Cobra. I’ve had mine since 2003. It’s a V1. They were biased cold from the factory. I had bias points installed and switched the power tubes to Ruby tubes and swapped out some of the preamp tubes as well. I biased it to around 33-35 and I run the channel masters at 3 o’clock. This makes a huge difference and really opens it up.
There’s so much folklore about these blowing up but when I look into the actual evidence it’s hearsay or someone forgot to plug in the cabinet. The cabs did have crappy speaker jacks (I had to replace one of mine).
Regarding the effects loop, when there’s nothing in it and you run it at noon I got a bit of volume boost and what felt like a little more grind. This could have just been volume though. When I have my Gmajor in the loop the level has to be up all the way or there’s phase issues.
The tone stack is a Bandaxall stack and doesn’t work like “regular” ones. You gotta use your ears when dialing it in, especially the low end.

Do you ever watch a video and think, "I want those minutes of my life back"? Well, this was absolutely NOT one of those. So good!
All the amps sound great in their own ways, except...
The Diezel clips sound suspicious. The attack is like its hitting a limiter or compressor. It sounds like more than power amp sag would account for to me, but maybe it really is that snappy. I usually have to send bass tracks through an LA2A (plugin) to get that kind of snap.

Man, you had me there for a sec. I was bracing myself to get my feelings hurt 😂
Not sure what the issue might be with the Diezel clips. Maybe I didn't leave enough headroom and youtube clamped down a little with compression

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne I normalized the Framus and Diezel riffs by loudness and I definitely see (using Melda MMultiAnalyzer) the Diezel's percussive attacks in the waveforms, that I'm hearing. In the measurement window of momentary LUFS the difference in attacks is one or two LUFS. That's a long window to measure transients, but the measured difference is an indication of how chunky the Diezel is. Its quite impressive.

I really liked this video, thank you. I tried a Cobra at the Framus store in NYC about 10 years ago while shopping for amps. I hated it. Scratchiest, thinnest sounding bullshit amp ever. I was demoing it with their LTD Les Paul style with EMG’s., which is also a pretty thin sounding guitar. Altogether it was so unpleasant haha. The Herbert is amazing. I ended up with a Peavey 6534.
Also over the years I’ve had a lot of similar problems with the 6505/6534 series of amps. About 6 of them between bandmates and myself. It’s always the same problem, and techs can never figure it out. There’s some kind of noisy popping sound that develops at some point when the amp is running. This is across four 6534’s and two 6505’s. Every amp had it. So frustrating. It gets expensive (and time consuming) chasing the issues around. I still have one 6505 and it still has the issue so it rarely gets used. If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know!

Mine does have very faint/quiet high gain bleed going on when playing clean channel. Clean is also quite nice/deep but also upfront sounding, I mean picking softly does not work that well.Anyway support told me once it may have bleed due to some design. I actually asked about this the other John Browne, never got reply, thats why I prefer this channel as you share your view and bad sides of the amps as well.
I find pretty loud compared to other amps, but it has pretty unique low end, huge, tight, sizzly, textured.
I think Framus has been acquired by Warwick some time ago.

    • @TheOtherJohnBrowne

Thanks man. I appreciate your kind words. Yeah, the switching design is the amps achilles heel which is why your amp may have some slight channel bleed.

Heard you tell this story before. I feel like this is a rabbit hole that one falls into once or twice when dealing with used amps… a rite of passage for obsessive idiots, if you will. On the plus side, in the comparative tests the Cobra really sounds fuller and more juicy in the low end than the counterparts. I hope to try one some day!

I have one of these, and I both love and hate it. It’s really easy to dial in a satisfying tone with the (original) cab in the room, but dialling it for recording is way harder. I mainly use a Two Notes Captor and IR’s for recording, and the amp really doesn’t play nice with most of the IR’s I have. I did however realize after a while that the amp is (obviously) designed with Greenbacks in mind, and getting som GB IR’s really helped.
