Thanks for your video. I got a cube and bought some year old hens to live in it.
Do you have any tips on how to get them to learn to go into the coop on their own when the sun goes down?
I also got eggs the first day, but some were in coop, but not the nesting box, and some were outside. How to they learn to use the nesting box?

Hi! Sometimes my girls refuse to go into the coop, they are stubborn but once it gets extremely cold they will huddle in there. Get any eggs out of the run asap. I had a few that started doing that so I figured out some of them don’t like the cedar shavings as much. One side of the laying box has a decent layer of cedar shavings and the other has just as small amount. They usually all lay in the area with the small amount. Chickens are fickle creatures lol. Maybe wait a day before grabbing eggs from the box so they can see that’s where the gfs go. Did you put a roost up in the run? If they aren’t in the coop at night you will want them at least on the roost bar so they aren’t sleeping on the ground

You’re meant to be cleaning that out every 2 to 3 days maximum. I have this exact model and I only have two chickens in it a white leghorn and a golden buff they crap up the thing in just a day or two. The handles actually help A lot just make sure you install them properly with their little brackets. i’m actually thinking about trying to install another extension omlet claims I will still be able to move it around but only with no more than a total of two extensions now we have one I want them to have more room. if you want to do composting and stuff like that that’s a really good idea however if you know a local farmer that would allow you to,,,you can save droppings up in an old plastic trashcan or a plastic tote with a lid and after a short period of time you could take it and put it directly on farmland as a natural fertilizer

Yeah so far once a month has worked for me with my chickens. It does get a little messier during wet season but otherwise they are fine. I want the compost for myself lol not a local farmer. Three chickens is always recommended instead of two due to chicken pecking order situations. How long have you had your coop? I’m hoping to get 20 yrs at least since it’s so pricey.

Loved that at around 7:40 you're talking about how easy plastic is to clean while the nosey hens are coming over to see what you're up to and you say "plastic .. spshshshs .. you just was it off" ... the hens get spritzed and dash away. 🤣
I also think for 2 months of not cleaning, that coop was pretty clean. To each his (her) own as to how often they want to clean a coop. I never understand why people feel the need to correct someone to do things their way.
I'm looking into the eglu, but will have it inside a run. How easy is it to clean the walls if you don't spray it down like you showed? Obviously I will remove what I can to hose down and dry off in the sun.

It’s easy as long as you don’t mind getting dirty piping your arms in and out and possibly your head. If you are putting it in a run it will be significantly cheaper for you and easier to clean since you will be able to reach the other side. If your in a cold winter climate do order the thermal cold protection that covers the coop. It has helped so much over this winter!

Is it difficult to unclip the fencing in the back of the coop run? It is currently on sale and im conisidering one but im also thinking about how to sweep under the coop. I would not be using it as a tractor

I use zip ties to keep the back secure so as long as you’re ok with redoing the zip ties you can remove the other clips as well.

We have one but our silkies won’t go up the ladder. We put sacking and mealworms on it, built a shallower wooden ramp with sides but still they roost underneath yet it’s very cold now. Any advice?

      @affordablepracticalliving  Рік тому

I would lock them in the coop at night. Unfortunately silkies don’t see very well and they aren’t the most intelligent chicken either. They might not see or understand that they need to go up there. I have caught mine sleeping on the roost outside at night before. I kinda just let mine do their thing but in cold temps I would want them inside. Anything at freezing temperature they should be inside. Did you buy the thermal blanket for cold weather?

I bought this eglu cube and the long run I dont have grass I have cement and thought I could just wash it under daily like a dog run. It is super messy more then I expected. I moved it every day to rinse and the metal wire broke, and the wheel also is now broken. It does clean up well. I then decided to simulate a cat box and rake it and put in sand and dirt. This was great for the smell. All was well until the rains came and then I had to tarp it to keep the rain out of the box and keep them dry and water still got in. tarps stop it from being well insulated. with the week with 5 out of 7 days raining I had to move the chickens into the garage. I am not sure if this is going to work out. When you move it ...it is unsturdy and falls apart after moving it daily about 20 feet, to clean, it then started to fall apart. I am not sure what to do now the wheel is broken ! I love my chickens though just trying to figure out how to salvage this. I wish I had a walk in coup.

Ok so first off chickens need to peck so keeping them on concrete isn’t ideal. Do you have anywhere that isn’t concrete? Also, it shouldn’t leak like that. I have a tarp covering half my run and right now I have a winterized thermal blanket I ordered from them in the coop itself. I would contact the company because there are expensive. And yes I said in my review when I move the coop and run it seems unstable

Would you mind telling me how much it cost. I can't believe how clean it was before you cleaned it. You have clean chickens

Lol they are more messy during the wet season when they get mud everywhere. It costed around $2k with all the extensions and bells and whistles. I purchased a thermal cover for the coop which I have on now, along with other goodies. It should last me 20+ yrs so worth the cost. I did purchase an even bigger extension but that is just a backup I have in my garage just in case I need the parts

Dont think you set yours up correct since the back looks abit miss-alined on the right side of the coop.

I’ve seen it. We did, it just didn’t fit🤷‍♀️. We’ve had a fox trying to get in and it hasn’t succeeded so I’m still loving it, oh and the dogs keep trying to dig under it. They get tired before they can get close enough!
