  • In this video we talk all things oil. How often do I change it, are the manufacture service intervals too long, and what oil I recommend you to use for your M140i. This applies to all forms of the B58.
    These are my guidelines, and if you have other ideas on anything related to what I've said, please feel free to share. I am always learning.
    Enjoy!

    I bought a 140i new 5 years ago. Oil changed once per year every 7k miles. Only ever used Castrol Edge 0w/30. Never had a problem.

      That’s good to hear. 0w30 will work fine too. Mine came with that from the factory and I used it on the first few oil changes then changed to 5w30, so sticking with that now.

    Great video Reg, do you have any plans to map the m140? Would be interested to see a video on your thoughts on tuning and the different stages
    Cheers,

    I change mine every 6000 miles with mixed driving. I use whichever brand of 5w30 that I can get the best deal on, but I generally get ones which are approved to VAG 504.00/507.00 along with the BMW LL-04 as the VAG specs are much higher. I firmly believe that a cheaper oil changed more often is better than a more expensive one changed at the manufacturers recommended intervals, providing that they both meet the correct specs. Mann or Genuine filters for me, some of them have a habit of falling apart when the filter cap is removed to change it, but these two seem to be the best IMO.

      I totally agree. The oil filter should not disintegrate, so if you’re changing your oil and filter at regular intervals.

      Do you consider LSPI protection as sth to look for when choosing a B58 oil ?

    • @simonh870
      @simonh870 Рік тому

      @@vollcare4076 I don't think LSPI is an issue on the B58, and BMW don't recommend an oil to counteract it. Of course using one wouldn't do any harm providing it met all of the other specs. It seems to be the B38 and B48 which are much more prone to the issue.

    • @vollcare4076
      @vollcare4076 Рік тому +1

      @@simonh870 B38 and B48 are almost the same engine as B58 - regards general engine design/control and also Nm or hp per cylinder.
      So that’s why I’m wondering LSPI is / or should be an issue on B38/48 but not on B58. Any idea for this ?
      Yes LSPI in B58 is not finally confirmed as a big issue.
      But there are several broken pistons in B58 engines published and the root-cause for me is not really clear; might be LSPI or also some different effect (like Injector failure, lean running etc)

    • @simonh870
      @simonh870 Рік тому

      @@vollcare4076 The broken pistons on the B58 seems to be related to injector issues and resulting bore wash. I would also say that in general the larger the engine displacement the less prone it will be to LSPI due to it naturally producing more torque at low rpm with less boost. I do agree with the concern due to the technical similarities between them, but I feel engine displacement has a lot of influence. The 20i variants of the b48 are more prone to LSPI than the 25i and 30i variants as the 20i runs higher compression pistons. I think with the B58 the best you can do for it is run it on Super unleaded with as low ethanol content as possible (I use Esso Synergy as it is E0) and if possible keep it standard. The original pistons are not the strongest despite what many people will tell you.

    Does this Milller Oil has LSPI protection (API SN+ or
    API SP) and do you think it’s important for
    b58 ?

    • @roadreg1820
      @roadreg1820  Рік тому +1

      Not sure tbh. Millers themselves recommended this oil for the B58 though. It’s probably the best you can get for this engine.

    • @vollcare4076
      @vollcare4076 Рік тому

      @@roadreg1820 it’s not my intention to say anything bad about Millers oil.
      But if you ask each oil supplier/manufacturer say will tell you something similar “this/my product is the best”
      As a customer you can only check specification and certain industry standards, if this oil has this release.
      That’s why I asked for LSPI protection:
      - if milled thinks this is needed for B58
      - and if Miller has some release for their B58 oil

    • @roadreg1820

      You can use 0w20, but the reason that’s accepted is for efficiency. Due to low resistance. I would strongly advise against using that oil, unless you live in a cold country where you need the oil to flow as quickly as possible.
