    Swords bard feels like the ultimate main character class, you get all the charisma and dialogue bonuses while also being a master at melee, ranged and spellcasting all at the same time.

    • @JasonDunna
      @JasonDunna  Місяць тому +7

      Strong agree!! They’re strong with melee weapons, can shoot their bow 4x per turn, and are full spell casters. They also get some of the best dialogue options in the game. Sooo good on a first playthrough!!

      Barbarian or you mean barb barb?

  • @Bruno-ki9iz
    @Bruno-ki9iz Місяць тому +16

    Barbarians are very beginner friendly, imo. Specially at lower levels, when you have poor weapon enchantments and reckless attack helps a lot if you pick great weapon master as feat.

    • @JasonDunna
      @JasonDunna  Місяць тому +3

      @@Bruno-ki9iz the best barbarian builds are throwzerkers or tiger/bear heart which do get a bit more complex on what you should be doing to maximize damage/survivability. The fighter is much more straight forward if you want to play a melee class, especially the battle master which has lots of great crowd control options as well. But your reasoning does make sense, reckless attack is nice but the fact it gives enemies advantage on you makes it a bit tricky

    • @sephikong8323
      @sephikong8323 Місяць тому +3

      @JasonDunna Thing is, for a new player Barbarian still gets the job done really well, and new players are unlikely to do genuinely optmized builds so having a class that gives you extra survivability (as I'd say that Bear Heart Barbarian is REALLY good for a first playthrough) and beter hit chance whilst being baseline easy to pilot is very important.
      Also, Reckless Attack giving advantage to your enemies is actually one of it's best attributes since it gives big incentives to the AI to attack you instead of your teammates which is very good for crowd control to have the enemies funnel towards the tank by themselves (and again, Bear Barbarian are so tanky they can easily manage that extra pressure)

    • @bonissoni1989

      I heard that you can mix a Bear Barbarian with a Moon Druid and make the Tankiest Tank in the game. Never tried it, though...

    Great idea for a tier list and I think you nailed it. The only thing I would change would be the ranking of Ranger but only for the Gloom Stalker subclass. At level 3 I think it's the strongest class in Act 1 since you get an extra attack with 1-8 bonus dmg to start every fight and you get +3 initiative and 3m of movement. I would rank that in A tier or maybe even S since the Gloom Stalker is pretty simple to play too.

    • @JasonDunna
      @JasonDunna  Місяць тому

      Yeah gloomstalker is really good early on, but I feel like most people pick the beast master for their first time which is good but a bit more complex with the spell slots and directing your animal companion what to do.
      The gloomstalker is seriously good though

    Bard did get a huge buff in 5e/BG3. Full casting alone is just crazy. Then subclasses either that leans into more extra spells and skill boosts or a class that lets you do extra melee / ranged damage using a seperate resource to spells slots. That's bonkers.

    • @JasonDunna

    My first play through was a monk and I happened to stumble upon a tavern brawler monk build and man as a first play through, it was a blast dealing absurd amounts of damage. For me personally I’d say open hand monk is s tier even for beginners.

    • @JasonDunna
      @JasonDunna  Місяць тому +1

      A lot of it's power comes from tavern brawler and strength potions, I say in the video I think its S tier in terms of power, but as a new player if you don't take tavern brawler or strength potions it may feel a bit weaker. Open hand monk is awesome though and pretty straight forward, four elements and shadow monks get to be a bit confusing though

    My first playthrough was a Deep Gnome Lore Bard, with dips into Wizard (for scribing spells from scrolls), Storm Sorcerer (for Tempestuous Flight), Oghma Knowledge Domain Cleric (mostly for medium armor proficiency while staying on theme), and Fey Warlock (for Eldritch blasts, and because I didn't realize they were the worst Warlocks yet).

    • @JasonDunna
      @JasonDunna  Місяць тому +1

      Hey that’s not a bad team! Honestly you can beat the game with any of these but some are powerful and straight forward how to play. Storm sorcerer is really great though

    • @magister343
      @magister343 Місяць тому

      @@JasonDunna I personally would put sorcerer a lot lower in the tier list for new players because it took me a long time to figure out how to use sorcery points effectively. I don't think I realized they would recharge or that unused points would be lost on a long rest, so I thought I had to save them up for when in the most dire need. I don't recall using any sorcery points until battling Orin.
      I only took Storm Sorcerer to change my spellcasting modifier back to Charisma after taking a level in Wizard, but did get a lot of use out of Tempestuous Flight.
      One of the least useful but most notable uses of Tempestuous Flight was when I used it right in front of Lady Ether just seconds before initiating the conversation where she says "A Githyanki is just as likely to forsake its violent nature as a Gnome is to fly." That seems to mean something different coming from someone who had literally just witnesses a Gnome flying. It wasn't until my second playthrough that I realized she would say that to those who were not flying gnomes.
      (In my second playthrough I was a Duergar Paladin, with some dips into other classes, who intentionally broke his oath killing Philomeen after taking her Runepowder so that I could try controlling undead in Act 2. In that game I tried a mod to increase the level cap to 20 and half the xp needed per level, so I was level 14 when I faced Ketheric and was able to dominate The Apostle of Myrkul before he could take a single turn. He quickly killed all his minions for me and then just stood there letting me hit him while not in combat. That soft locked the game as he didn't drop a netherstone though, so I had to save scum. At level 20 I managed to take control of Ansur, thanks to my Wildmagic Sorcerer Gale's Bend Luck ability making the undead dragon fail his saving throw when I used it with only a 20% chance of success. My pet dragon had 0 movement speed and wouldn't follow me anywhere but the Rivington or South Span waypoints. )

    Warlock is by far my favorite Class. Despite the Subclass. Regarding the rank you just did for beginners, I'd put it in top A-tier at least. Meddling between the S-tier.
    Yes, you only receive two spell slots with this class, but they level up alongside your character AND they recharge on short rests, unlike other classes. To me, that is kinda broken when you know how to use short rests correctly (and it gets even better if you have a Bard on the party that allows you to get a 3rd short rest).
    And disregarding the Spell Slots, you can rely fully and unlimitedly on cantrips. And, look at that: The best cantrip in the game is yours by default (Eldritch Blast)!!!
    Do you wanna be a half cast/half martial character? You can! Pact of the Blade converts your damage status from Strenght/Dexterity to Charisma (A.K.A. your main stat) by simply binding your weapon to your hand (Also gives you proficiency with that weapon, even if you don't have it by default). And with all of this, you still can cast spells or use Cantrips. And as you said, Warlock's Extra Atrack stacks with other classes' extra attack (Except in Honor Mode).
    And your character will also have the Charisma to do very well in all of the Dialogues in the game. The ONLY ONE downfall of the Warlock is not even a problem for your character (unless you play as Wyll) because it only has a real impact on a Tabletop Game, which is your Patron. In DND, Warlocks usually can't go against their patrons, even if they're evil and want to do harm. If you have an original character, that doesn't apply to you in BG3. =)

    For truly new players, YMMV a lot of course based on previous knowledge. When I was new I knew literally 0 about dnd and picked bard because it seemed like the perfect party face (it is tbh) but the large number of spells and available actions left me struggling with choice paralysis on many turns, especially when I came from DOS2 where you don't have spell slots to conserve for example. It all makes sense now after hundreds of hours but at the time I found it all very confusing, especially compared to the three I rolled around with the most act 1 (Karlach, Lae'zel, and Astarion) who basically you just click the attack button when you don't know what else to do 😂
    But I still think Bard I'd still put in A tier just because you can talk your way out of almost anything even if your build is a hot mess. It almost feels like they designed the game sometimes with bard Tav in mind.

    • @JasonDunna
      @JasonDunna  Місяць тому

      Bard dialogue options are incredible!! I must ask, what subclass did you go with? Sword bard is seriously so good. Flourish with your bow shooting someone 4 times is awesome, and then if you get the band of the mystic scoundrel you can bonus action enchantment or illusion spells. Its so much fun, especially with the helmet of arcane acuity - but that gets to being more complex. Dex classes are pretty fun though because they will have decent armor class and attack rolls

    @Khantia Місяць тому +2

    I'd disagree with part of the list. My criteria for "best class for NEW players" would be: self-sufficient, reliable and straight forward. So my list would look like
    Barbarian - S tier. They are fairly "dumb" to play - just rage and attack stuff and you can't go wrong - they are pretty strong in combat. They also have some unique dialogue options, that can make lots of encounters easier.
    Bard - F tier. They are more of a support class and at least in the early game they don't have access to a lot of good offensive spells, so they have to rely strongly on their allies.
    Cleric - B tier. I would put them in A, but the Shadowheart origin being a Trickster Cleric by default (which is really bad) is dragging clerics down. They do have some strong utility, and some strong builds, but their decision making isn't the most straight-forward one.
    Druid - A tier. They are self-sufficient and reliable, but depending on the sub-class, not the most straight forward to play. The majority of their spells requires concentration, and managing that efficiently can be a bit of a burden for new players.
    Fighter - S tier. As dumb and reliable as the Barbarians. I'd actually say that the Champion isn't half as bad as some people make it out to be. It passively makes you stronger, and you don't need to manage your maneuver dice. It's also better, if you're going for a throwing build, which doesn't benefit from almost any of the combat maneuvers.
    Monk - S tier. Monks are just incredibly strong in this game, and there are tons of gear for them, which nobody else would contest.
    Paladin - C tier. Paladins are strong - they can deal incredible amounts of damage in a single turn. But... managing your Oath can be extremely difficult for new players, unless they want to be Oathbreakers. I suppose that a Vengeance Paladin can be fairly easy to keep, UNLESS players try to unlock some achievements, which would force them to make decisions, that would break their Oath (such as saving Sazza). They also have fairly few spell slots, so managing them is also fairly difficult.
    Ranger - C tier. Rangers have some really strong multiclassing paths, but pure ones aren't all that impressive.
    Rogue - F tier. They are fairly straight forward to play, but definitely not self-sufficient of reliable. They are a great class to multiclass into, but pure Rogues are rather weak and unimpressive.
    Sorcerer - A tier. They are strong and reliable (unless they are Wild Magic subclass), but managing their spell slots and metamagic can be a bit cumbersome for new players.
    Warlock - B tier. Their Eldrich Blast build would be S tier, but can't rely that a new player would know about it. And managing only 2-3 spell slots per combat is fairly weak, especially against bosses with high health (F tier). So the average between S and F would be B.
    Wizard - S tier. They can unlock all of the spells, so they are extremely diverse and thus reliable and self-sufficient. While not the most straight-forward to play, they don't have the same problem as Sorcerers, where on top of spell slots, they would also need to manage metamagic points, so I'm putting them one tier above. Although proper wizard builds to require some advanced game knowledge...

    • @JasonDunna
      @JasonDunna  Місяць тому +1

      Putting Wizard S tier and then saying it requires advanced game knowledge kinda goes against the idea of being a good first class. Draconic Sorcerer will deal more damage and have much better survivability, and the storm sorcerer can fly away to stay alive. Charisma is much better for a first time player than intelligence too
      Bard in F tier just makes no sense to me. Sword bard gets 2 attacks and they can flourish and hit 4 people per turn, so offensively they’re great. They are charisma based as well being a great face of the party! They mostly get crowd control spells but vicious mockery is a solid way to give disadvantage on attack rolls keeping everyone safe. The extra short rest is also quite nice

    • @Khantia
      @Khantia Місяць тому

      @@JasonDunna I suppose I can bring Wizards down to A tier. I mostly put them in S, because of their ability to learn all the spells. Will they need all of them? Most definitely not. But having them at their disposal at all times IS convenient.
      They can even learn some advanced spells (from the tower), that no other class has access to. Although I'd give new players about 25% chance to find all of them on their first playthrough.
      As for the Bard... their extra attack comes at level 6, unlike other classes who get it at level 5. AND their fighting style is restricted to one-handed weapons.
      Meanwhile, the strongest weapons in the game are great weapons, or throwable weapons (that come back to you).
      There certainly are some builds you can do with one-handed weapons, but they aren't nearly as straight forward.
      Not to mention that barbarians and fighters (who are the other ones who rely on weapons) have 3 attacks after level 5 (frenzy barbarian) or 11 (fighter).

    • @Wolferys
      @Wolferys Місяць тому

      @@Khantia Archer swords bard sort of gets extra attack at level 3 already with the flourishes, though it's a bit limited. Then at level 5 you recharge it on short rest and can use it a lot more freely, and at 6 you can do 4 attacks per turn. As for the early levels you can dual wield hand crossbows and have cloud of daggers at level 3 which has nice damage, and you can even outright skip a lot of combat by talking your way out of it
