Beared Canuck, I had a AT 2017 model completely modified to become the new 2019 adv model at the time...outstanding bike rode from BC to Patagonia and back in 2019...OUTSTANDING...but it is a big bike for a lot of BC forestry and logging routes we find ourselves on ...single track is another game on the big AT, so I am going smaller lighter and more agile to the 450L also...a little disappointed in the smaller fuel tanks available and the frequent oil changes...but you can't have it all I guess...I expect this 450L to be more like the feel of the KTM 450xc but perhaps a little more relaxed and predictable...which for my age and is probably better for a more gentle ride now, but with tons of ...jump me up and over that log...power...nice to be back to a Honda again too!

Well done John! I was sorry to see the video end, which for me makes it a good video. My KTM 690 does it for me with some modifications to make it more road friendly yet not too heavy when I run out of skill.

I've heard the 690 be described as a unicorn - the ultimate bike for dual sport/adventure. I'm here because I already own a 450x and was planning on selling it for a klr or drz but after this review, that probably doesn't make the most sense. Some day when my budget permits, I'd love a 690.

@@Crittermoto I went with the CRF250L as well. I figured I'd rather feel I have too "little" a bike versus have too much bike. The 450L and AT were in the running though, but I have zero regrets about getting the 250L. It's perfect for me, for now. I plan to do some light ADV trips, and putting around close to home. If I ever want to move up, it will probably be to the 450L or the Yamaha T7. After owning the 250L, my interest in the AT has really fallen. The AT is just too much of a street bike for me, I want something a lot more off road oriented. That, and I want a bike that is under 400lbs. (T7 is close).

At last a kindred spirit.. I am with you bro... I like your philosophy and how you live it. Unplugging from the Hype and making what you ride, "YOUR RIDE".
I behold the big corporate marketing to be concerned only with sales and success and a lot of people buy into their marketing out of insecurity. Working with an inner focus on ones own individual needs, enables one to not only build a bike to ones who own spec, but for that harmony to be part of human and machine out on adventures; away from the maddening crowds and hordes of gullible riders who fall for the insecurities of image, ego and childish insecurities.
    Namaste bro.

Bought the bike because I got it at a great price. $9100 OTD. Anyway I wanted a bike I could ride on technical single track, at a decent pace, but still street legal. It does both but neither great. Once I installed vortex ECU it was a lot better. Also eliminated a bunch of weight and good knobbies it is okay on single track. It is not a 2 stroke 300 and never will be. But the best thing I did to make it A BETTER dual sport was regear the damn thing. Why doesn't Honda put a road gear 6th in it and leave the other 5 gears alone. I went to 14 on front and 45 on back. I know most will disagree but now I can ride it like a dual sport. 60 mph on the road without revving 8crap out of it. Just did the 100 mile White Rim trail in Moab and Enduro loop in White wash and some tighter single track north of Rabbit Valley and it worked great.

I really wish I could justify getting one of these but I just can't deal with having to change the oil multiple times in a trip, with all the good trails being 200-400 miles away from where I live. What's the longest you'd go between oil changes if you didn't hammer on it and didn't ride it like a race bike?

Well I agree to a point, back when they start producing street legal dirt bikes they was named Enduro's by the manufacture now that name has changed to a different bike. Any bike can be an Adventure bike, now may not be as good as a 450L or a 390 680 701 for offroad single track . It all depends on the riders thought process of an Adventure is , some like the easier gravel roads ,while some want more hard core. The Original Adventure bike in America was the Indian and Harley Davidson because of they didn't have many roads to travel on and hardly any paved roads

Well said. I have pursued the same objective in Australia and considered the WR450, CRF and the EXC500 as the ONLY possible candidates. The Aluminium frame, eliminated the WR and the newness and outrageous price of the Honda eliminated them. As you say, don’t count the cost of the mods and in any case, you and I are many $000’s below the cost of a behemoth F850/Triumph 800 as well as a good 70+ kg of flab. With a Cush drive hub, rebuilt seat, windscreen and higher gearing I don’t mind highway stints and of course, when you hit the dirt our bikes run rings around those other lardarse modified road bikes. I used to hate the thought of making a 5 point U turn on a tight trail on my F800GS and then when it fell over, I needed my riding companion to help me pick it up. You can keep your 790/T700 too. The KTM is too expensive and the Yamaha is a bare bones converted commuter bike with no gadgets. Keep up those reports
