The ATV market is shrinking because manufacturers would rather sell a 40k SXS than a 10k ATV and dealers would rather finance 40k at 18% for 8yrs than to sell a machine cash OTD.. Then those SXSs destroy everything that make ATVs enjoyable.. GRRRRR!!! Sorry to be THAT guy.. CAN I PET THAT DAAWWWWG!

I’d much rather ride a wheeler than a side by side for the fun factor. Wheelers can tear up trails too if people are being ramrods, but I see WAYYY more ramrods driving side by sides. I also see regular folks driving side by sides and just having fun but ramrods driving side by sides do ruin a lot of terrain and cause problems for other riders. Also, I would like to play fetch with that dawg!

Four wheelers are more fun than an SXS but the truth is people want to take friends or family with them and enjoy a lazy car like seating and driving experience with blaring radios and beer cans. That is why ATVs are dwindling and side-by-side‘s sales are rocketing. I guarantee you if you bought for premium ATVs the cost would be much more than a premium for place SXS

I hope that the atv market continues. Part of riding fun is the freedom of being outdoors on too of a vehicle and not just inside of one. The sportsman 1000 xp offers all of the abilities to go anywhere a sxs can go still , yes you need to be in better shape to stay on one all day.

Personally I’m a ATV rider for life,as for the market I think pricing is a big part of the smaller line ups. After riding 500 class atvs….I finally stepped up to an 850.What a difference, well worth the price in my book. Thanks for listening to us with the added ATV products

I love the sound of the twin cylinder. I bought a 570 trail the beginning of the year and think it's a great machine. When I hear any twin running I think to myself that I should've went for the big dog. I already feel like an old man for buying a utility atv. A sxs is IMO for old people. I went with a polaris because they're the best looking. Love all the videos.

I think the ATV options are shrinking because the market is moving towards side-by-sides. There are great ATV's on the market from multiple manufacturers but I think the barrier of entry for a family to get into the sport is lower with a side-by-side where you can take young kids along and not have to worry about everyone having their own machine and the associated costs of multiple machines. I do think Polaris continues to be the leader in the ATV market and has outstanding products across the board.

Yes,the ATV market is definitely shrinking. Most people now days didn't grow up on motorcycles and ATV'S like my generation did. Most of my friends had a bike from the time of 12yrs old on. My knees won't take that anymore so I ride Atv's now. I like the Atv's because of the challenge, not responsible for anyone else, and I can get into places one can't get a SxS. Most places here in East Tennessee are tight woods riding and I love it!

Here in Colorado, and I'd imagine a lot of other states as well, there are some trails with a 50" width limit, and most of those have a gate that won't allow anything bigger than that through. The SxS guys have started finding increasingly convoluted ways to go around these gates and it ruins the trails because those machines don't fit in the established ruts and lines. I never used to dislike SxS owners, but I'm starting to.

I have a 850 ultimate trail and love it. It should be noted since you talked about cleaning the rad, the front grill peice comes right out in less than a second letting you access the radiator directly. Also the gauge pod on that does have Bluetooth connection to your phone for notifications
I think the atv demand is decreasing causing the line ups to decrease. It seems people just enjoy sxs more now and it's easier to have multiple people come along with you.

Thanks for the ATV content 🤘 I've never been interested in the SXS. I'll watch some of the SXS videos just to stay up on things. But ATV's is where its at for me. I don't see myself ever getting a SXS I drive truck so I'm always in that seated position with a steering wheel. I like being able to stand up on ATV's especially when going through a water crossing. Who enjoys sitting in water in a SXS? And if things go wrong its easier to bail on a ATV. In a SXS your just along for the ride.

I’m 55 now. And ever since they first came on the market it was a 3 wheeler first. Then on to quads. Been riding them ever since. Then in 2021 the sxs crave hit me. I just had to have 1 no matter what. My excuse was so that my kids and grandkids could come ride with me. Though it was fun 20:45 everyone still wanted to ride their own machines. I ride every weekend and now I’m realizing a single person in a sxs just wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be. Deep down I was beginning to miss quads. Well I decided to move back. I went out and purchased a new Polaris 850 ultimate trail. And that machine actually made me realize how much I missed riding quads. I still kept the sxs. Mainly we just use it for backup support and recovery now. It’s too bad that the sxs craze is affecting the quad market.

The sport sxs has taken a big chunk of the atv market share for sure, but it's important to remember not that long ago, sport side x sides didn't exist. I think there will always be a market for atvs, as they're still very relevant and they definitely have their place.

I’m personally an ATV guy and where I ride on the east coast the trails are tighter! I think the market is definitely shrinking. But everyone is still offering a grate line up of rigs! We don’t need 47 different models from every!
Sxs’s are definitely taking over! And I think it’s more for the family aspect. It’s a hell of a lot safer to take your spouse or kits out with a seat belt and a role cage than on the back of a atv!
Just my 2 cents. Keep up the grate work guys love the show and have been watching sense I was a kid! Lol (still feel like 1 when I’m riding!) lol

Great ? To be asking Luke. I personally have 3 ATV all Polaris 1 570 1 850 1 1000xp love all of them. For the polaris ATV line up what more do you need. Yes it is smallish but they have everything from a beginner rider to a seasoned pro. As far as side x side it is kind of unfortunate that there are more SXS out there. But like I’ve said for years if you ain’t riding your just driving. Will the ATV market go away all together i sure hope not but time will tell. Will the SXS rule all maybe. But not rite at the moment. So to all the finger pointers out there lets all enjoy the sport and remember it is a privilege to be out on these trails not a rite…. Thanks again for all the great videos guys keep them coming.

I think it’s a shame that atv manufacturers are pushing more towards side by side, they have there place no doubt, but for me it’s all about rider input. I recently purchased a 2022 CF moto 800xc, because of pricing, I didn’t have 20,000$ to spend, to have my family enjoy the sport I loved so much growing up. I wish every manufacturer would invest a little more into atv’s, it’s not a one size fits all for everyone, and certainly different price points should be looked at, it’s such a fun sport, and brings family and friends closer, that everyone should be able to enjoy, love your work Dirt Trax, been a fan for a long time, always look forward to your shows.

Great looking ATV. I agree with you about the storage. Should not be under the rack. I am glad they added metal support to the racks. I also found them flimsy. Feel like it will break off. Glad to see ride command on atv’s. wish other companies would add a similar system. Ride modes are also a great idea. I think less models is a good thing. Means the models left are better. Also think the market is smaller due to trend towards SXS. The market will switch back and atv’s will be more popular. Once all the SXS folks realize the atv is superior 😁

Family and pets 😄 When it's -25 to -35°C here in Fort Mac you don't see many ATVs ripping the trails but you can always wave at a passer by in a Sxs with his wife, kids and dog 👍 My quad burnt in my garage few years ago ( winch wires arc 🔥) Ended up buying a Sxs to suit our family needs. We see many people selling their ATVs up here and buying sxs's. Whays funny is the ones who buy open cab sport sxs's, then put them up for sell/ trade for a Defender / Ranger with heat and A/C 😄

I think ya as customers like the scs market as we can bring the family with and they are always coming out with something new and better in the sxs market which gets customers excited to try something new. Where is with the ATV market there hasn’t really been Andy thing new to get us excited. I believe the main focus on ATV buyers is for budget and more of the single people that want to get out and ride.
I personally love both I like being able to bring my family with in a sxs to enjoy it with them but also love my atvs as they are easy to throw in the truck go ride for the day. I also enjoy being able to throw them around a little more. I find it more of an art to ride an ATV in the mud as well.

But I hope they keep the lineups with some options still. They are great for hunting, work around the house or farm due to them being more nimble and take up less storage space. Also you don’t need as big of a trailer or you can load them into a pickup. Thanks for giving us great content!!!

Regarding the question on the ATV vs SXS market. The manufacturers are always looking for ways to up sell you, whether its in accessories or the next optioned up model. When your shopping for these higher end ATV's, they are very near or at SXS prices (before you load them up with options). The SXS looks like a better bang for the dollar to allot of buyers, hence the increase in sales and appeal. Manufacturers are keen on moving people up into the SXS options, they seem to market something for every budget (more so than ATV's), the bigger bore ATV's are priced to a point were you at least need to entertain the SXS option. If the manufacturers get you into a SXS, then they can sell you what seems to be an unlimited amount of SXS accessories. Trust me, its easy to spend $10,000+ on SXS accessories without trying too hard, this cant normally be said for ATV accessories. I presently own a 2019 RZR 1000XP Ride command, a 2019 Sportsman 850 HO and a 2022 Sportsman 850 Ultimate trail. My cost of ownership on the SXS is more than the 2 Sportsman combined, this is why the ATV market options are shrinking in my opinion, because there is simply more money to be made with SXS's owners. However given the present challenges with manufacturer supply of parts, stop rides and long waits for crowded dealerships. And then factor the rising costs to borrow , purchase and maintain, think the SXS trend will soon revert back towards ATV's, or worse, a mass exit of people from the sport. These were factors for me when I decided to purchase my 2022 Sportsman 850 Ultimate instead of another SXS. I like some of the new SXS offerings, but at these price points, I think durability, value and warranties needs to improve. Enjoy your channel

A lot of the consumers want an off-road vehicle to use with their families. As all off-road vehicles become more expensive, a lot of consumers realize they can buy a single UTV and use it with their kids or partners instead of buying multiple vehicles. I own an ATV, but do recognize the advantages of a UTV for taking a my wife or kids along and the increased work capability.

For ice fisherman, the bucket indents are money! ATV’s are becoming a niche so the market is shrinking. The utility in SXS’s and the ability to include the spouse, pushed us past the atv market quickly. That doesn’t mean we don’t have one in the stable. I'll go against the grain here. I don't think the ATV market is shrinking and I don't think it has ever shrunk. The UTV market is just exploding in comparison. It's easier for a first timer to start with a UTV because it's similar to driving a car, and the cage makes them feel safer. You also have the manufacturers focusing more on UTV's, because even though they use a lot of the same components as an ATV, they can sell it for twice as much. Then you add things like radios, roofs, windshields, any parts that you don't really get for an ATV, and you can double the price of the UTV. So they're selling a decked out UTV for 4 times as much as a regular ATV, and they only had to make 4 tires, two diffs, one engine, one transmission, and so on. That's just smart business
You can tell they want to phase out atv's just based on the lack of effort they put into them, but they can't because that market is still growing

  • @beeamazzzinghives

SXS's and ATV's both have different markets. I have always been a Polaris guy. For hard core trails I currently have a RS1 which is my favorite when riding alone. It is a beast. I have a Turbo used when I take my daughter along or my wife joints in on a ride at moderate trails. She then drives the RS1. Then I have a 2018 Sportsman 570 Hunter Edition for hunting and easy riding. I just picked up a twin Hunter Edition last night. I think they are definitely more focused on SXS's than ATV's because they make tons of money on upgrades. Can't do as much on a ATV. That's why the Hunter Editions are a great choice. I don't see a reason why they eliminated the lower rear trunk storage on the newer ATV"s I love and use that space. The 1000's with the top access rear storage seems not thought out well. A lot of older members in the market too, like myself, and as the saying goes "with age comes a cage" so I think that also factors in to marketing.

Great question and one that I bring up during a lot of group rides when there is a mix of ATV and SxSs. The market does seem to be putting a lot more marbles into the SxS market and I am not entirely sure its not pure profit driven or based off what they do for market research. I am in New Brunswick where there is a wide variety on machines on the trails and on average we see a good mix. Some rides are 70% atvs and some rides are 70% SxSs. If the makers did put more time and effort into their ATVs, perhaps they would see an increase in ATV sales. ATVs usually cost a lot less the SxS so moving the marketing towards ATVers the same as SxSers may allow more people to get out and enjoy the great outdoors if they are on a budget. The same would go with auto makers.. all SUV and trucks now so no cars?? Not every person can afford a big truck or a big SxS. Get the ATV market flowing again like the late 90's and I bet you would see an increase in sales again. Thats my 2cents worth on the situation.

I had a 16 570 sportsmen touring SP and a 18 grizzly I sold both to get a 22 rzr trail s so I could take a passenger and have them sit beside me. With the cost of the sxs's going up a lot of potential customers are being priced out of the sxs market so I see the atv segment increasing in the future because of cost.

I'm 26 and have been riding atv all of my life. I started on a 99 trailblazer 250 and my dad rode a 99 Scrambler 400. I love atv's over sxs's all day which is why I bought a 22 sportsman 1000 S and still own the 99's to this day. I feel like the the big names are just not giving enough color options or creative touches to the atv market. Their is plenty of accessories they offer from the factory but nothing to really give it a personality of it's unless you go aftermarket. As DirtObsexxion says they don't care about the atv market as much as they do for the $20,000 and up sxs market and seeing a trailer load of atv's for the family is a lot cooler than seeing 1 sxs that you can't fit on the scenic trails is.

The market for ATV's is definitely shrinking. People enjoy having a companion along, the safety of rollover protection and the ability to get out of the elements is definitely a plus. Will they ever vanish? No, they will always have their place (I'm going to keep buying them), but for a growing number of people, UTV's make more sense.

I think options are shrinking because the market is shrinking. side by sides are taking over, even for myself if it wasn't for my tight forest trails I would upgrade to a general or rzr. having both is expensive. the issues you pointed out about storage on the bike i totally agree. there is lots of storage compared to other brands but when I put tools on my rack I can no longer access the rear bin. other than that I don't have much to complain about.

Unfortunately the ATV market is shrinking. I own an ATV (Polaris Sportsman 850) and SXS (Can Am Commander 1000) and they each have their advantages and disadvantages. IMO there is no better feeling/experience than riding on an ATV trail along side a winding creek. You have more control, and maneuverability in the ATV. My SXS is much safer, and is more practical in terms of working on my land, collecting wood, landscaping chores, etc. Thanks for all the great content!

I’d say the market is shrinking a bit because of the demand for side by sides, HOWEVER, I don’t think this is a bad thing. I think the manufacturers need to stop producing 15 different versions of the same machine (to the point where you have no idea what trim level comes with what options), and instead do fewer machines, but really well. I think most ATV’s are purpose-ridden - work, sport, trails, and mud. It would be nice to see them really focus on those categories and give each different rider the best possible options for their preference.
You guys are awesome, I too live in Ontario about an hour away. Long time fan, keep up the good work!

I think it’s more of a demand thing and that’s why it’s shrinking. We used to have ATVs and then we sold them and bought a RZR after trying several SXS, since then anybody who takes the RZR out for a ride who has an ATV, loves the ride, loves the enclosure, and we all really like not getting banged up as much. It’s especially good for the extreme riding we do in BC.

Nice review. I was looking at a Polaris Hunter Edition in 2019 and 2020 and the same model is several thousand dollars more for the same Hunter Edition with same/similar equipment. Also, this 2023 looks like the same Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 that's been around since 2018 with the exception of the LED lights. Did Polaris address and fix the issue with the one-way bearing and the play in the handles? I recall these issues being a problem with past model year XP 1000 models. My main concern has been the quality control and all the recalls. For example the stop ride order currently in place. It seems once you hit the 1000 mile mark, things start to go south real fast from what I've read and seen with the XP 1000. I love the looks of the Sportsman, but quality and reliability are also important before I purchase. Lastly, I can't tell, but does the 2023 XP 1000 still have the arched A-Arms? Thanks again for the review on the 2023 model.

I think the reason for the switch to SXS and subsequent shrinking of the ATV market is not any one reason but a number of factors combined: Familiarity of opperation where almost any user that drives a vehicle can simply get in and go (not going to be an advanced user but with capabilities of machines today they sure enhance driver ability). Safety, providing users in most cases a roll cage, seatbelts and seats that protect a user in cases of a crash (yes there are Safety products like the rollover bar for ATV units but its an addon / afterthought). Another consideration is price, with entry SxS units at a similiar price point to high performance/ top of the line ATV units buyers are forced to consider how and who they plan to use a unit with and if they can save by purchasing a single unit vs multiple units. Lastly I think we have to consider mindset, there are extreme users in any powersport and they know what they want based on their style however to the majority of the public its more of a "get out with friends and have fun" mindset. SxS become quite attractive given the stock and easy expansion of features (stereo, cabin, extra passenger seat, heater etc.) that again forces the user to think about how they want to use it and have fun with friends. I mean its much easier to sit in a heated cabin and be able to talk directly with your buddy then having to stop next to them on a trail and shout. Again that comes down to mindset and style of riding where for me I will always prefer an ATV and specifically a CAN-AM Renegade but thats just my riding style preference.

There are less ATV choices because more people are switching to SxS. I have had 5 atv’s in my garage at one time, no not all new, but for a family to go ride that’s what it was. I bought a Honda Pioneer 5 and have one atv left. I love riding ATV’s but it is easier to talk the wife into going riding if she doesn’t have to drive herself. Let’s face it, if the wife isn’t happy it’s harder for you to go ride as much as you want. SxS make sense when it comes to being able to take the wife or kids and not have to worry if they can handle the trail. I know they need to learn but it is more relaxing if they are just riding in the SXS with you. I do think ATV’s are about to come back in a big way with the prices of SxS’s getting expensive.

When the atv weighs almost more than a arctic cat trail 700 utv, or a honda pioneer 500 idk. I wish they try and keep they weight down. I'd never like my daughter riding this, rather have her on my modded yamaha raptor 770 I actually see that to be a safer option because of weight. Not stability necessarily incase of rollover should happen. I guess it's one thing that I love about the Japanese atvs is the weight. I miss the scrambler 400 2-stroke because it was light 4x4. Probably going to buy and build my own with a big twin snowmobile engine 700-850cc. My daughter actually has a modded yamaha blaster I built for her it, tops out at 72mph stock was 55mph or so. It's at the limits of pump gas and geared to the moon, it actually beats my brother's Polaris scrambler 400 2-stroke 4x4 in a drag race for 2 high line pole lengths. 🤫 awesome video. Keep up the great work guys. I hope yamaha, kawasaki, or suzuki go 1000cc in a atv and keep it light and nimble.

The ATV market is shrinking from previous % because of side by sides. But there's still more ATVs out there than there was years ago. Before it was only farmers and hunters that had ATV's (the odd weekend warriors on sport quads). Farmers never sold there's and traded in for new ones because they lasted (we still have both our Honda trx and Polaris 300 from the 90's). The wave of people getting out on the trails boomed and then the RZR came along and they were a more comfortable ride for the weekend rider. Theres still lots of engine options for ATVS but with add ons I think just a couple engine options is all you need and then just add the options you want.

I think as UTV / Side x sides get more expensive, ATV's will come back. I do think simplifying their line up with the economy, parts issues, and so on is a really good idea for now. However, I think people looking at the UTV prices will eventually go back to ATV's. I have a 2022 1000 ultimate trail. I work it a lot doing utility work. The racks and storage have been great. No water in the rear even with a pressure washer washing it. I do not like how the tires throw mud on me. I can tow my neighbors 20ft landscape trailer up my gravel road in AWD and low gear and it will dig and dig to pull it. I absolutely would buy it again. I have zero regrets with it. It is a monster.
I rarely use performance mode and honestly, it is on the stupid side in performance mode. Work mode is nice in the woods moving firewood around. The lighting is awesome and the polaris glacier plow is also engineered well. The only issue I wish they took care of was to give you some plugs to fit in the holes on the racks. I enjoy the machine and I would not go back despite the price. I have installed a horn and turn signal kit also. Polaris did very well with this machines design.

The biggest issue to owning an atv now is cost, even base models are expensive and upper class models are nearly unobtainable for most buyers.

Nice review Luke - interesting question, comes down to use for work or play. Buy one UTV/SxS and you and the wife can enjoy but both can't operate at same time, buy two ATV's and both can enjoy and if one breaks down, you are not stranded with a pissed off wife. Yes the SxS market has exploded, showrooms full and second hand ads for sale is approx 50% of ads for ATV/UTV's. Every maker is competing for your dollars, new and revolutionary improvements are the latest "Look Cool Factor" people want to brag about, but do you "really need it". ATV/UTV's market is being driven by options on them, not the way to do business but banks will give you a loan for anything and people want everything. So my answer to your question is - What is it like to want. Walk into any dealer and they will push you to the next model and pressure you into big purchases. I want another ATV for the wife with IRS and max 500cc EFI and not green in color - hard to find but still looking. Cheers and sorry for the long rant, I'm Canadian and it's in our upbringing.

My thinking is the lineup is shrinking because the market is shrinking. But it seems like they kind of roll some model's features into others making it look like a smaller lineup. I know my local dealer sells a ton of those ATVs (almost the same percentage compared to UTV's). But with the changing demographic within the last maybe10 years it makes sense. More families going riding choosing the safer properties of a SXS over putting kids on an ATV is my hypothesis. Plus SXS's are Polaris's honeypot so whatever sells better gets more marketing attention. But It could change 2-3 years from now. That's just how the world works anymore, less predictability.
