YT algorithm kooked here, this is the content I like, love your pixel art and it's awesome to be here at the start of your journey (I'm team cats tho so i hope you add some cute ones to the game)
Loved the vid. Your art, especially the dog, is so charming. I was, not too long ago, also making my first game in Godot. It’s fun to see others start out and watch the learning process. Good luck!
I love the energy in your video, too many game devs on UA-cam overedit and try too hard to be funny. Your video feels so naturally entertaining by comparison. Great work!
Keep it up, bro! I’m currently making first game in godot, too. I’m a family man, too, so I like that you don’t set hard deadlines-but are clear in your steam goal. It was fun watching you make the sprites as well. I LOvE aseprite!
You're off to a great start! I've been carrying around a similar game idea in my head, but there's definitely room in this world for more than one dog platformer. :) Good luck on your project! One thing I noticed is that you seem to have your parallax backwards? Layers that are closer should move faster, so when you move e.g. right, they move left relative to what's behind them. (Same for vertical.) That might be the only thing making the movement jarring, and it would probably look fine otherwise!
Glad to see I'm not the only one jumping into game development right now! Coming from an artist I've always wanted to make a video game but couldn't bring myself into doing so until a few days ago! I hope to see many more of your videos soon and your Doggo and Catto pixel art look amazing!!! :3
Really awesome video bro! The editing is really good, and I'm happy that you decided not to give up. I'm at the same stage as you in game making and seeing you not give up actually motivates me❤❤ I hope to see more videos like this. Good work!
That's a very cute project! Love the pixel art! I have also started creating a little platformer thanks to the same tutorial, with otters and fish collecting. Maybe I'll get back to it at some point...
Your story is similar to mine I love it, but i'm making one about my Cat lol but the animation for your Dog for your game is awesome it made me realize i've never seen a game about a dog like this. Good luck with your game brother!
Nice video mate. I'm starting out myself, making a pixel RTS game in Unity. You got my sub and my support, keep it coming pal I hope to see more of your work and your dog in future.
Great work. Got me even rethinking some things. I have so many in depth ideas that I need to step back and tackle a simpler project. Think I'll make a hero cat in mine. 😂
I thaught you had at least 100k subs🤯 but you only have 197 I’m defenetly Going to keep watching this series when the next episode comes out and that pixel art dog was amazing
Hey, loved the video. One note, the background is moving quite heavily when you jump around. I don't know about others, but it looks really jarring to me. You might think about adding some parallax to the movement of the layers in your background so it doesn't look like your mountains are falling out of the sky when you fall. Just a thought, in any case, you're doing a great job so far! Can't wait to see how the project progresses.
Hey nice video! Don't be hard on yourself about recording and the video habit, you did a good job! My biggest struggle is definitely making devlog videos but it gets easier. I just try to remember it's okay to put out crappy videos which might explain why my videos are crappy... 🤣🤣
Hey brother! Glad to see another game dev here just getting started! I’m actually making a game about my dog too, though I’m going more for a 2D Zelda like game rather than platformer. Can’t wait to see what else you come up with! Subbed for sure
as a newbie in the game dev industry myself, this is very good progress for you for your first game. I myself make now my first game and show progress on my channel! The dog is really adorable!
0:25 Story of my life! I find whatever time I can scavenge throuhgout the week to work on my game. It pays off, though! I've been working on my RPG/adventure game hybrid Outcasts of the Rift for about 4 years now. I have the complete first third of the game as a demo/public beta on Steam and I'm preparing for a Kickstarter campaign launch later this year.
Love the solid new channel! I've been in Godot myself since June of 2024, created a few projects. I love your pixel art dog, it's amazing -- good work! Looked for your discord linked to UA-cam to join your community and keep in touch but I did not find a link! Subscribed, even if no discord, I want to see what this game becomes!
Thanks for the kind words! I’m not much of a discord user outside of small voice chats with friends, so that’s not really on my radar at the moment. I’ll never rule it out in the distant future though!
I also started with the brackeys tutorial not that long ago to get me started on my own game idea, love what you've done so far be keeping tabs to see the progress
man I also have started to make a game with my 2 dogs 3 years ago, but I somehow stopped working on it a year ago.. seeing this gave me motivation to go on haha great work man! I am trying to get a job as junior dev for now, but I am unlucky. I guess I need to do some more projects :D
Welcome to game dev! I love the dog! From an artists perspective, one of the best things you can do for your game is to create a sense of coherency. For level design, and anything in the game really, think about your main character (the dog). Is he a normal dog, space dog, pirate dog, zombie dog? Why is he there, is he lost? Is he searching for something, saving someone? When you decide what your main character is in greater detail, it helps to shape the rest of the visuals and overall world. I noticed you have cyber cat or whatever, so maybe a space theme could be a fun direction to take. Maybe the dog snuck onto a ship, and is now stuck on a planet trying to get back home. Whatever you choose, always think about the world as a whole, not just a bunch of random things thrown together. Best of luck!
I found it very cool how you took a tutorial and are now adding your own stuff to it! Since most UA-camrs don’t do that and I feel like that is exactly what I would have done which makes it super entertaining to watch. Also your video quality is absolutely amazing I’m not kidding. I’m not a typical commenter but I can’t wait to see more! 👍 +1 sub
As someone who has done at least 100 pixel arts and around 20 pixel art animations in a-sprite I would be super proud to make such a cutie patootie doggo :)
Very nice video! Way to go! One tip for the "jumping forest". Dont make it follow the dog's or camera's position, just its x component. Make y component of the position vector constant.
Bro.. you won’t believe.. I’m making similar game the difference is, my main character is my cat and enemies are dogs . I’ve done animating, now learning Brackey’s tutorial video. I’ve started learning before seeing your video. I’m happy, motivated and competitive by seeing ur video.
"not proficient in pixel art" then cooks up some really good pixel art Btw really hope this video gets pushed out to more people, you've got hella talent that more should see
7:33 Alsooo, how much I can relate to the footage that was not just enough for the video and the progress that is made outside of footage that is shot. I always struggle with that as I woro on the game, and after when I start recording I realise how much of progress I just missed to record
Very cute! Since the dog has black fur then meybe a snow level would be nice to add contrast ot some white outlines around the sprite. Currently the dog kinda blends with background.
Nice art and dogo :) Just wanted to say..please dont make the background move on Y, just let it move on the X, it made me a little irritated it moved a lot :) all in all great first step and I wish you the best in your journey :)
instead of adding more different colliders to your objects, it might be better to just check the players position/velocity relative to the enemy to see if the player killed the enemey or vice versa. then you don't have the hassle of needing colliders to stick out to the sides, such that the player cannot touch both different collider types at the same time and so on. if the player has a downward velocity and the pivot point of the player is above the pivot (or center/ or top) of your player he is the one attacking.
you mentioned stereotypical things that dogs don't like but are there things your dog in particular dislikes or things/actions they growl at more often? The cybernetic cat golem (calem?) was great but I'd rather see non existing stereotypes, stuff that comes from your heart and worldly inspiration instead of existing stereotypes. I do look forward to seeing your progress, you go Jake! Also if your dog's name is lugnut would it make sense to have the collectables be vaguely nut/bolt shaped instead of coins? like just hollow hexagons
Great ideas! I haven't said this because it might be ambitious, but I was sticking to stereotypes in case I ever add the option to change the player sprite (add other dog breeds) so whoever is playing can play as a dog similar to theirs. But I may not go down that route so I'll keep your comment in mind!
@@JakeDevGamesyeah but my dog doesn't mind cats or mailmen so playing into stereotypes would make me just associate the character with stereotypical dog instead of feeling more like my dog. Where as if your enemies are coherent (why are the cyborg cats allied with the mailmen?) it would be easier to imagine my dog being sent to this universe to help save it, regardless of what the enemies look like. Also if your sprite set only uses like 4 or 5 colours it wouldn't be that ambitious to add some way to change which colour each of those are replaced with, trying to do different skins with spots/patches of multicolour would be ambitious but probably not that necessary given the size of the pixel art imo.
hey mate youve gotten a lot of comments and views so idk if youll see this nor have i looked through other comments to see if its been said but i think you should make the cats bump into each other and walk opposite ways instead of going through each other
@@owenmitchell232 Originally I think the enemies did collide and switch directions but I changed it. I liked the idea of the enemies able to stay in a little patrolling formation and march back and forth around a little area without hitting each other. As the game progresses I’ll keep it in mind and may go back who knows! Thanks for watching!
Ok so ,making a generic platformer for steam is not the best choice ,it’s a cool game ,but you’ll have to think: “why is my game different from millions of other platformers out there?” ,u can merge ur idea with other genres like “automation ,puzzle.. etc” and try making it more original :D
I completely agree! This game is less about making a commercially viable game and more learning the ins and outs of the engine and the steam pipeline as far as getting a store page set up, and how pushing out patches and updates works. All so I can be prepared for the next game if that makes sense. That being said, I’ll think about what I can do to make the gameplay stand out with maybe another hook or sub genre. Thanks for the insight!

Good start! My 3 year old was next to me when i watched this and she kept saying "Dog! Woof Aweeee" so id say it sells as a doggo!
Love your pixel art dog man. Your dog should be proud too!
Cute doggo and great vid. Loved the chill vibe of your video. Looking forward to more.

This is a great first video, congrats on your first upload! It really is inspiring, both to make games and videos myself :)
Great quality vid, man! I loved that dog sprite! I also struggled to make a similar dog walk cycle sprite XD! Keep up the good work! 👏
yo Jake I'm super glad your first vid took off so well. I also wanna start a channel about some coding and talking, keep up the good work!!

I politely and respectfully agree with the comment about the background. I’m sure you can touch it up like you mentioned about the game. :)

Can't wait for part 2 tho.
Very cute! Since the dog has black fur then meybe a snow level would be nice to add contrast ot some white outlines around the sprite. Currently the dog kinda blends with background.
Both good ideas! A winter level could be cool for other platformer design reasons too
