Hi. I’m Sandra. I have watched your channel off and on for years and loved it. Have been watching it a lot more often lately. I love it. You brighten my day every time I watch your broadcast. I was born in NZ and have learned things about my country I either never knew or did know but dud t really think about it. So thank you to you both for who you are and I look forward to enjoying more of your humour, 13:50 seeing more of you both on your channel. So again thank you so much. Take care. Sandra
Wow, thank you so very much, Sunitra, what a beautiful thing to say. Have a great week and thank you again for the really lovely support, we couldn't be more happy xx Liz and Bri
Do you guys notice how much more independent and tough Kiwi women are. I am a Kiwi in the UK and I feel like people are shocked by my toughness and independence here. I feel like British women are still stuck in the patriarchal ways and you don’t often see female cops or security guards or even women in manual labour jobs but in NZ it’s common to see a female builder or plumber or electrician. Just wondering if you’ve noticed that?
Yesterday I read your comment on another post (thank you, it got put into review for some reason...UA-cam bots!...), and I wanted to say thank you. It was so interesting to read about you being in the UK and your experience there. And yes, I think you have a great point, I'm used to it now, but when we first came to NZ I remember being shocked at the amount of women construction workers there were. Not something you see masses of in Bath, that's for sure! I hope you are feeling happier and not too homesick...hopefully, these podcasts are giving you a little slice of home. Much love to you and thank you again for joining us and saying hi! 🥰🇬🇧🇳🇿 Liz
Brilliant location. I always said Napier is worth a visit. I think I mentioned I was born there, though never lived. The hospital used to be located there till they moved it to Hastings, and the building I was born in no longer exists, I think. I visted at the begiining of the year. Enjoyed every moment of my stay, despite the rain. Napier is a special place, and I regret not getting that job there I applied for over 8 years ago, but that's the way it goes.
I dress classy? AWESOME! lol. I work in the CBD and the rule of thumb is "business casual". Super happy that you've experienced a friendly reception from us locals. Don't worry we wear socks and sliders here.
To those who studiously ignore me, I smile widely and say cheerfully, "You're welcome," as I pass, but then I can be as politely rude as the next person. Mind you, in all fairness to the ones who disregard a cheerful "Hello," sometimes certain individuals live such isolated lives that they are surprised to be greeted at all, and the penny only drops when it's a bit late to respond. As a solitary type of person, I have noticed this trait in my own behaviour, so am practising hard to rectify matters.
LOL, We're smiling at you watching this video!! Napier the only place we've been where there is a Countdown across from another Countdown🤔 I am sure it is on your list, but by chance it isn't, make sure you go up Te Mata peak and it's many treks. No tea of any type is weird! Have a great time!
I know, RIGHT?? Two Countdowns ...I can't tell you how many times me and Bri have sat outside on the road...unable to choose which one to go in to...😂 Love you guys! Thank you for the Te Mata Peak recommendation, it is on our list! ❤️
The sun here makes people happy. Sorry about the tea thing, I am a herbal and black tea drinker and carry my own tea kit every day. UK born but been here 18 years now and Napier does take some beating.
Awesome video the locals are friendly bcuz rural people usually are, they reflect back your smiles and this is a port town too where cruise ships come in, so they're use to strangers. The vegetation is different including punga, cabbage trees and the NZ Nikau palm. Russell has lots of palms You are so right about the tea. They are missing out on a good profit with not serving a good cuppa. The place would be warmer bcuz there's no big mountains like over your way.
Thank you for being with us! Loving the difference in bird song too (the cheaky chaps seems a lot noisier here than back home in the Naki, outside our window at 5am!! 🥰🐦⬛ have a lovely weekend!
The difference is because Napier was obliterated in the '31 earthquake and was rebuilt in what is the closest to a "planned" reconstruction that exists in New Zealand. That is why it is less of a hodge podge than most NZ towns are. Miami Beach FLA and Venice Beach CA are much bigger "Art Deco" cities compared to Napier. Napier gets away with the "Most Art Deco city in the World" because most visitors don't have a clue what the other candidates are.
Oooooh, Liz and Brian, this is such a funny and interesting video!😘 Beautiful surroundings💖. It's always hilarious, and we can't stop laughing throughout your presentation👍. My gosh, guys, you are so amazing💖. Brian, you have a talent for imitating the noise of power tools! 🤣 My husband even mentioned that Napier looks like a great city to live in (I wish we could! 😫) Lots of love 💕.enjoy your vacation. 😘💖

Interesting thing when I was living in Hawkes Bay I worked for farm supply company as delivery driver delivering to farms and life style blocks. Most of the life style blocks were being bought by either Americans or POMS 😅. I also house sat whilst there my first sit was 3weeks and next was 7 months both life Style blocks.😮😂😅
Liz - this segment is brilliant - another book in the making I think (adventures housesitting in NZ!) (WIth Brian of course). Question - if you had first arrived in Napier - would you have settled there?? Looking forward to more of the same - you guys have nailed it - keep it up Mr GX
Thank you so much Mr G, we are thrilled that you like it. In answer to your question I am going to say yes, I think we would... It's such a beautiful city (plus my sister lives down the road in Gizzy) and did I mention that there is REALLY good wine here??? 😁 🍷 You are wonderful and as always I love it when I see your kind comments and support. Thank you for being you xx Liz (and Bri)
Some people just don't want to sell tea. I used to work for BP at their Wild Bean cafe in Wellington and we sold possibly 2 cups of tea per shift. It's not a big seller here, as it would s in Bath. Tea is more the hot drink you have when you visit someone at their home. It goes back to the days of visiting old family members and having tea and bikkies or tea and cake. It was a way for hosts to act all posh and bring out their tea sets that they probably got when they got married, and serve you. Whereas you go out for coffee, meet up for coffee, have a muffin or a slice and possibly have a bit of change it if $20.
Thank you for sharing and for watching! Great point, I suppose I just can't imagine a day in my life where I don't have at least three cups of tea....😂 Have a lovely weekend 😊🫖
You really need to come to Masterton. Award winning cafes that don't charge $6 for tea (outrageous) as well as gorgeous food. It's only 2.5 hours from where you are now (very beautiful, highly overrated gang land Hawkes Bay hahaha)
I visited Masterton with my mum a few years back and LOVED it! Time for another visit I think, Debra! Have a great weekend and than k you for joining us! 😊
You guys are working things out, yep alcohol checkout, the staff do need to check that you are both old enough, and not pissed! Napier is east coast, better climate, warmer, drier, but obviously mid winter as u guys are wearing layers LoL. You will find out that Hastings is more like New Plymouth! Cannot believe there is a cafe without Tea!
I'm from Dunedin and been to a lot of places overseas, and I've never encountered a cafe that didn't serve tea. I've recently given up coffee, so I wouldn't do well there!
Right Trudi?! 😂 I'm happy to repoort we have the BEST cafe experience in Hakes Bay...can't wait to share next time! Thank you for being with us and for saying hi :))
Owning a business also means overheads so your cup of tea is paying for the lighting, freezers, power, staff wages and overtime, remodeling costs, cleaning costs, equipment replacement etc etc shall I go on !! It’s not about the cost of a teabag is it! Happy travels Nick
They do acknowledge all this in the video though... unless I've missed the point, I think they were saying that given the high markup compared to coffee, it's a no brainer to offer it?
You should try buying alcohol on the self checkouts in the UK. Alarm goes off, shutters on the windows, red flashing lights. The staff come over 5 minutes later to press one button to allow you on your way with your bass shandy 😂
Hi Guys. Greetings from Colorado, USA! Glad you're having a great experience in Napier. Perhaps the way they've greeted you was influenced by the recent celebration of #WorldSmileDay. ;-) Also, my experience in the U.S. is that some stores "I.D." for alcohol if you look "30-and-younger." Otherwise, most establishments don't bother. Happy #InternationalBeerAndPizzaDay (10/9), #WorldPorridgeDay (10/10) & #WorldEggDay (10/13)! Also, Outstanding October and Splendid Spring...
I was with my 30 yr old daughter in the supermarket that I go to each week… she was in front of me buying a bottle of wine .. they asked for ID… she didn’t have a drivers licence at that time … and had forgotten to bring her ID card … I vouched for her in that she is my daughter and was 30….they wouldn’t accept my word … I said that they know me , I shop each week … but no, that wasn’t enough. So , I said to my daughter , that I would buy it…. Supervisor said no … you can’t buy it for her …we know she doesn’t have ID……..

I'm going to have to agree with Brian about Napier not being the "Art Deco" capital of the world. Art Deco was born in Paris. Art Deco (Art Déco) is not a singular, easily defined style - it can be neoclassical, or Japanese-themed, or pure geometric minimalism.
