In NZ we describe ourselves by what we do..as an electrician, builder or plasterer rather than using the foreign concept of being a 'class of "tradies".

There is a spiritual truth..'What you see, is what you are...the crow sees the dead and dying things in the garden, while the butterfly sees the flowers.' Keep highlighting the positive and this will bless all of us. You have been brought here, to the land of new zeal. While many worldly folks are fleeing to Aus, the spiritual one are finding their peace here. Go well.

Originally from Stoke-on-Trent but came here as a kid. I do have a fixation with weather and wind but so far have spent 25 years out of 51 living on boats. Wind gives me free power and I haven’t had a power bill for over 18 years. Also was self sufficient during the cyclone here in HB. Am on call for marine rescue also so need to keep a handle on the weather and as a pilot also have more than a passing interest, just thought it was normal. I do note on some USA videos, that it can be so still which seems odd to me but I am in a different situation. As a dual tradie, when people find out, they can be super quick for a favour for them. Stopped being open for that as it feels I got taken advantage of that but still do my rescue volunteer work to put into society.

Yep it's only watties. The nz one Brian. Although it's not the same as it once was and it's changed again recently as it's become very thin and watery. We usually call fries chips and crisps chippies. I like others just handle the cold as it's only a few hours and you're off to bed where it's warm and the winter cold really only lasts a couple of months. Layer up handle it and carry on. Take care Liz. Arohanui

I have lived in Australia for 45 years after growing up in NZ. After about 30 years I gradually stopped buying Watties Baked Beans (because they were getting harder to find), and now buy Heinz, but I am still partial to Watties. You mind find that in the UK the temperature people heat their rooms to has gone down a little, as every degree hotter costs money.

Considering I remember summers when the high rarely got above 20, I always thought of 16 degrees being t-shirt and shorts weather. Not so much now, as winter has been really warm compared to other years, but still. I appreciate the difference from England, having lived in London for 8 years, living in well insulated houses there. Living in an uninsulated house in NZ, you really notice the difference. And I still prefer heinz ketchup, but I started finding myself recently liking Watties tomato sauce as much as henz ketchup. Don't know why we tended to get heinz when I was growing up other than maybe because my parents are english and still liked the heinz. I must be getting soft in my old age for liking watties tomato sauce. I still call them just chips, and rely on context to tell if the are like english crisps or chips from a fish and chip shop. And NZ fish and chips are still better than London fish and chips. I missed the feeling of outdoors in NZ when in England, and looked forward to it whenever I visited. Now I'm back, I love the feeling espeically the native bird call, which I never used to hear in Whanganui, when I grew up here. The native plantings people have done changed that. I admit I was surprised when a tradie on the side of the road said a friendly Kia ora/hello to me, a complate stranger, that I rarely encountered in London. I still love listening to you guys, especially videos like this.

Liz,Brian - interesting! Some observations - we talk about the weather because every week somewhere a house is flooded, trees blown over, 8 metre waves, and a road washed away! Jeez - the weather makes up half the news - and of course we play the "telephone book game" - did you know Bert Smith - the cliff fell on his house, and did you hear about Mary - well the sea wall collapsed and washed her car out to sea! Everyone knows someone who has a weather incident! No wonder everyone talks about the weather. You are correct about tradies - if fact many more besides - - the bigger picture is that Kiwis are orientated towards "people persons" - they will talk to anyone - and offer advice,. commentary, well wishes etc. You cant buy a bottle of milk at the store without a conversation. Comes from being on an island I guess and self sufficient. (And the Māori influence on society).Best regards Mr G

@@ItsaDrama Well, my first thought is that you are mixing with older folks who are showing their age, or perhaps you stumbled across a bus outing of persons from a certain type of facility that caters for old people or those doing rehab? Of course the real Kiwi with hip / knee operations are probably re- living parents/grandparents experiences at Monte Cassino or Western Desert and without the dastardly and unfriendly Hun shooting at them the nearest substitute for a genuine war wound is a knee/hip op. Perhaps they need to tell stories of nurses, physios and doctors. Endless possibilities (including tomato sauce blood substitute.) But on balance I dont think they are old school Kiwis - they would rather crawl over broken glass they admit pain - too darn stoic for there own good.

My English ancestors came out to NZ from Oxfordshire in 1839, from somerset in 1859, from Staffordshire in 1876, and from Durham in 1863 but I'm not sure what the kiwis talked about then. maybe probably Kiwiness was still a work in progress eh. I know that whoever came out from England AFTER an earlier English migrant was called a new chum and was teased mercilessly for being green and being 'fresh off the boat' even if the earlier migrant had only arrived in NZ ten years (or even two years) earlier.

Does every country have these bate channels... Acting though they're advice for people coming to New Zealand when really their audience is Kiwis watching to see what they'll say...
