After 9 years, finally.
Fun fact: in the last 5 issues of this book the panels actually countdown (I think it's 5 anyway). So in the fifth issue had 5 panels per page, the 4th had 4 panels per page, until the final issue which is why every page is one panel in that issue.
Holy crap! That's awesome!
@@jonjones6764 Who cares if you're replying to an old comment? Obviously people are still here reading. There's no time limit in responding to a comment.
That might be the most profound comic revelation of my life. That is so badass
Cool. I never noticed.
It's such a cool idea for what ended up being one of his most iconic stories.
Who knew that the ultimate strategy to finally defeating the Man of Steel was to punch him really, really hard?
Just Some Guy with a Mustache
I mean, that’s right out of Goku’s playbook... his playbook that he scribbled on his hand with like half of the letters written backwards.
@@dinosaurusmaximus8506 Piccolo: "I figured it out guys, we have to punch them really hard"
1st: ur everywhere.
2nd: it should be REALLY hard.
I'm still so sad abridged ended early

I'm dying here after Sal talked about going to that comic book store as a kid. That maniacal laugh from the book store owner.
This is the first Back Issues I watched. Never in my 24 years of reading comic books have I heard someone state my thoughts on the death of superman so distinctly. I was hooked from that day on
Death of Superman was my first comic series and the issue where Doomsday punches that blob chick was my first comic. I was 7 years old and I remember that scene being the freakiest thing I'd ever seen since I thought that was actually Super-girl getting her face knocked off. Good times.
I was equally confused back then!
This is my exact experience as well. Death of super was my first and I vividly remember the face splitting I was like wow this guy is reeeeealy strong he punched a super into soup
100% same here
That snowball re-enactment to the editor was absolutely amazing. I was in tears how funny it was! It reminds me of those stupid schoolyard one-upsmanship situations my friends would get into.
"Then a monster comes from outer space and beats superman to death"!!!
"Ya that sounds awesome"
Sal you straight killed it with that bit, had me in tears next to Ben's skeletor
Theres a brilliant moment at 20:05 where you can see ethan working through the fact that they made a character so steeped in the history of slaves and then turned him back into martian manhunter, all the heavy themes and topics of discussion that come with that and then realises this isnt the time nor place to discuss it
i really wish in the new 52 they redo some of these 90's comics...but GOOD. say what you will of new 52 but if it was announced that geoff johns was retelling death of superman or scott snyder was retelling knightfall, i'd buy that shit in an instant
So would I!
I'm in on that!!!
they kinda have done Knightfall but modernized its called I AM BANE and it's awesome.
I don't know why but i've always liked the Blue Beetle. He's one of those characters like Moon Knight who people don't really know that well but are actually really fun characters
Ditto, man. Dug that suit and his optimism.
Yeah, and when he died in Infinite Crisis I got so upset. Although he did get some badass final words. "Rot in hell Max" What a cool sendoff to the character, not taking shit from anyone
Your description of HOW they got the green light for killing Superman literally made me laugh out loud hahahaahaha XD
"...aside from all the other puppies dying."
"Well that was pretty rough."
OH MY GOD I LAUGHED SO HARD AT THE UNNOTICED, ACCIDENTAL, AND AMAZING PUN. I literally had to paws the video.
I love the way ethan says “are you out of your GODDAMN MIND?!”🤣
I remember reading the scene with Matrix not knowing it wasn't Supergirl. I was freaking out, "did Doomsday just punch Supergirl's skin off?" very traumatizing.
Doomsday getting directions to Metropolis would be such a funny animation short!!! I wish I knew how to animate, I would totally do it.
48:16 Sal's maniacal laugh made my day. Thanks you guys rock.
Sal's DC writers pitch to the editor had me laughing out loud.
The worst part about this comic is that it ruined death in comics. Death no longer has any meaning in comics. Outside of Uncle Ben and a few others, everyone has come back at some point. I can understand why, because every superhero probably has at least one loyal fan out there, but it takes away the gravity of the situation by having them come back in the future.
DC wanted Death to make an appearance, to make the last panel more dramatic.
Neil Gaiman asked if Superman was *really* dead, and DC said no. He said no. So that didn't happen.
I wished comic book meetings were as frantic and fun as you make them seem, Sal.
Superman fights in a city and kills Doomsday, everything's fine.
Superman fights in a city and kills Zod, WELL EVERYONE LOSES THEIR MINDS!
:p
he couldn't get doomsday out of the city. Snyder's vision of supes has him saving no one or even attempting to
Brandon Wheeler He flew Zod to space, and Zod brought it back to Metropolis.
Brandon Wheeler agreed, it would have had more drama and made us care about the fight if Superman had to find a way of pulling Zod out of Metropolis, saving people and minimizing the damage to the city. I really didn't like Snyder's take on Superman.
I've tried to match Sal's energy when I recount the motivation behind the Death of Superman storyline. A pale comparison.
If you stop and read that comic page of Batman punching out Guy, Black Canary asks if he's dead and then under her breath she says, "We could only be so lucky."
I love that tv little house is always in the comments too. Hope they continue that even when they get a big fan base (which they will, I'm sure).
Thanks dude! Here's hoping!
tv little house hasn't been seen for over 6 years now. R.I.P.
Great episode! Sal's version of the behind the scenes of with Editorial always makes me bust a gut laughing!
Doomsday killed a deer?! Oh dear...
D'oh!
Ikr
Deary me!
I have all the issues of the death of superman from when I was a kid, along with the trade. By the return, I was firmly ready to read some less insane, Spiderman comics to cleanse my pallette.
Keep up the great work guys.
Haha Boy were you in for a treat!
Oh my damn God.
I thought I would never know.
I read this comic at a friends house forever ago. It was a fun read but it left me with one burning question, given my lack of knowledge of the character Matrix.
Oh Lord, I said, looking to the sky. Why have you allowed this poor Supergirl to punched so hard in her face? Doomsday punched this girls face so hard it looked like pancake batter in zero gravity.
I couldn't figure out why her face forgot how to face. Thinking this was the real Supergirl, I was shocked to see that one big fat nasty Doomsday punch had turned her face into playdoh.
Loved the vid, as always, and love you all. Will show to bandmates and friends.
Thank you, man! Hope they like it as much as you!
Yeah, that was the Supergirl Matrix created by Lex Luthor in an alternate universe (before DC did a lot of convoluted stuff with her origin). She was sent to Superman's universe to ask for his help to stop three Kryptonians who were attacking Earth. Quite a few things happen to her before she finally finds Superman, so a lot of time goes by before they go back.
By the time they return to the alternate universe, all the people on Earth are dead and the only survivors are Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor; both of them die not long after help arrives. Each of the Kryptonians have abilities far beyond what Superman has. Not quite as high as pre-Crisis levels, but massive by comparison, so Superman doesn't stand a chance against even one of them.
He wins the battle by exposing them to Gold Kryptonite, from that universe, to remove their powers, and then acts as judge and jury for Earth; he was a duly appointed representative when he was brought there. He has no way to send them to the Phantom Zone and figures they might still be a threat, so he sentences them to death and exposes them to Green Kryptonite. Months later, the guilt from killing them temporarily drives him insane, made him subconsciously assume a new costumed identity to fight crime, and exile himself from Earth. It all got retconned though.
As for Supergirl, she returned to Superman's Earth and eventually ended up manipulated by Lex Luthor.
Thanks, MVG, for coming in and dropping knowledge!
Sal's Laugh at 48:15 has figuratively literally got me in stitches. I haven't laughed quite as hard for a damn good while. Good Job Comic Pop from almost 2 years ago!
Great show, I love listening to you guys! But one correction: according to the documentary about the death of superman (found easily on youtube), the story about how the writers came up with this storyline was this: when planning the stories for a year, the writers wanted to do the wedding at the end of it, but the people behind the tv show didn't want them to do the wedding in the comics before the tv, so this storyline had to be pushed back for a few years so that the show could catch up. Now the writers were pissed off because five to twelve they had to scrape a whole year worth of stories and come up with something new in just a day or two. And since Jerry Ordway (one of the writers) always jokingly suggested to "kill the guy", they were like: "You know what? Screw them, we might just do that!" And so they did😀
Thanks for watching! Glad you like the show. I'm pretty sure we literally say this in the episode!
My bad then, must pay better attention next time😉
I totally had that Our Lady Peace album
Hello Joel from 4 years ago
It's so funny how you bring history to all this, like I was pretty young but remember when this issue was announced. My uncle brought it home, I read it over and over, which like you said were just pictures, and still loved it! Then you had to think, who the heck is doomsday?!
Back Issues helps me deal with my issues. Thanks guys
my God.
watched Sal's evil laugh over and over again. wont laugh again till I have seen something funnier.
I think it might be a cool idea to do a Back Issues all about the various deaths and sometimes ridiculous resurrections of multiple heroes and villains. It would be great to see Tiff, Ben, and Ethan's faces when they hear how dumb some of the resurrections were.
Love that semi-kind of-not really-re-enacted rant :D
0:37 Greatest line from infinite crisis!
A friend suggested your show and I am hooked. Love the show, listen on my commute in my car. I am looking forward to when you guys cover Xecutioners Song!
Thank you! We will get there, definitely.
One of the funniest episodes so far "for reals". Awesome job guys!
Thanks, Shams!
That writers room bit was amazing Sal, this episode made me laugh so much, which seems in bad taste what with Superman dying and all...
Are there any other big 90's events to cover? All I can think of are Clone Saga, Knightfall and this one. Just love watching you guys rip into 90's comics.
There are plenty left for us. But we've got 2/3 down! Clone Saga... But I've got something equally 90s in the pipeline...
Getting down to the important issues guys. Arguing over wind and man nipples. Yes
One of the most ‘90s comics of the 1990s!
It's been a long time since I've read this book. I'm gonna have to make some time to read it again. Thanks sal for your insight on the book. I absolutely love your show. Keep up the good work. God bless you guys.
I have the Death of Superman novel it is awesome and every time I get to the end I always feel like I'm going to cry because I can feel the emotion.
00:45 Sal, I know what you're talking about. That was in Infinite Crisis
Mitch actually comes back a few years later as a hero named Outburst, connected to STAR labs
I still remember going to the Red Bank mall to get Brett Breeding (the inker) to sign the death issue. Still have it in a protective plastic case.
5:13 “that was really rough” haha rough... dogs... ruff...
Best moment of Back Issues is 48:14 BY FAR!
48.14 Sal's LAUGH OF PAT!
Ethan is gonna lose his shit so badly when you do Reign of the Supermen. That will be the entire first season of Getting Physical with Ethan right there.
Also, I remember owning a trade of this when I was a kid and like many people had NO idea who Matrix was. For the longest time I thought Doomsday had actually punched her skin off or something, killing her. It wasn't until a random episode of Atop the Fourth Wall covered it that I finally realized what the hell was going on there.
Great episode as always, and Ben is totally wrong. It's just one of the many reasons that Ultron 8 would be a better father than him. Ultron 8 would definitely understand the bad-ass imagery of that flag, and he would teach his children how to fully appreciate it!
So just wanted to comment. I actually just started buying and reading comics about 6 months ago (so I'd probably be alot like Ethan and Ben in most of these episodes). I've read several comics that y'all have done videos about including the Death of Superman story. Absolutely love the show (even though some of the books I don't agree with y'alls opinions) they are absolutely hilarious. I do find myself asking sometimes (while laughing of course) if Sal does in fact enjoy reading comics due to the explanations lol.
Just one comment on this video that I read about. You mentioned that they decided to kill Superman because they were marrying Clark and Lois on the show. From what I read it's actually the opposite. They wanted to marry Clark and Lois in the comics but the show had just started and was gaining a fan base and they didn't want to conflict with the show, so they killed Superman instead of him getting married. Don't know if it's 100% true or not, just something I read as for as why they did it.
Anyways love the show and can't wait to continue watching some of the other videos y'all post.
You're right.
Sal is right.
Kudos on the terrible Our Lady Peace reference. Reminded me of a personal favorite, "Let You Down." Thanks guys!
I get Sal is trying to dumb down this comic and the work that went into this story, for the sake of ethan and ben, but at this point I feel like Sal doesn't like any comic book ever made
+ZENPOOL So many people completely misunderstand this show and what we're doing. It's frustrating, but exhilarating to see so many unique perspectives and ideologies united by a common art form. Comic books do alot of weird & convoluted shit and that needs to be acknowledged.
+ZENPOOL In all fairness, he's retelling the story as it's told in the TPB, which is absolutely awful. There's a crapload of pointless dialogue, but after the first like 20 pages, it's nothing but Superman and Doomsday fighting and it ends on the page of Lois holding Superman's corpse.
In a better world, Man of Steel 2 would have featured Brainiac being salvaged from fallen Kryptonian ships by Lexcorp. Man of Steel 3 would feature Luthor cloning Superman from blood samples collected after the Zod and Brainiac fights. Brainiac was attempting to revive Kryptonians using Kal El's blood and the codex. With Brainiac destroyed, Luthor creates a defective Kryptonian: Doomsday.
bet you $10 that lex builds doomsday and doomsday kills superman in batman v superman dawn of justice
Good god no! NO
If Doomsday isn't in Batman Vs Superman I'd love it if put in a post credit scene in where they show a mountain and you hear the sound of a bunch and then you see a fist in side this bunker. Every DC comic film after we see this fist bunch the wall and his glove rips off and to see the spike until death of superman film.
That was the quickest 10 bucks ever.
MysticalGreenBeanie well son of a bitch
cool episode, nice to finally know how things went down. Have a couple questions for you guys:
What do you think about Doomsday as a villain, what with him being nigh immortal?
and
What do you think of Guy Gardner these days, with him being a Red Lantern and a bit more serious than before?
Doomsday could work, but Doomed didn't go well. Guy has gotten a LOT more interesting.
The Death of Superman is what got me into DC comics as a kid, before that I was an X-men/Spider-man guy! Still love Superman and DC to this day cause of that dumb story. BTW the Matrix version of Supergirl is coming back thanks to the DC Convergence event! Cant beleave I'm kinda excited for that.
Man, the old TV Little House logo. My god, its been a minute
Are you going to do any more Superman stories on Back Issues in the near future? I'm thinking For Tomorrow, Funeral for a Friend, Reign of the Supermen or For All Seasons?
I don't remember when it was but I did read this in trade in the early 2000s. As a kid watching superman the animated series I thought no one can beat superman. Then I read Death of Superman and it change my view that Superman can be defeated. Personal I would have like Darkseid to off superman like in that one episode of STAS where he's bounded to that machine. Watching it gave me shivers as a kid.
I never understood the Supergirl thing until now, thanks
Anytime!
I think this was the first DC story I ever read, my school library had this along side all the Marvel 'Essential' trades I was pouring thru. Also, Supermans cape-flag is awesome. However, not as awesome as Captain Marvels UN cape-flag from kingdom come.
Yeah, capes into flags at DC... Interesting.
I'm in Australia and I went to a comic store yesterday and they had a polybag Superman #75 and the White polybag superman issue where he came back and both were $100 each......
That comic book store is a liars den.
I do really like Superman was straight up beaten to death. No kryptonite, no magic. Just beat.
Better than being stabbed as well
This was a big thing back in the 90s because back then DC characters did not come back from the dead crisis on infinite earth proves that, and that was a standard. That’s what made the story good Superman really did die.
In Post Crisis stories Martha Kent made the cape from regular cloth. That's why it tattered so easily.
Based on the research that I've done, Ben's assumption is basically right. They were originally going to marry Supes and Lois, but Lois and Clark made DC put a stamp on that, and the writers had to scramble to come up with a new story in its place since it had been delayed a year. Their thinking was essentially "No one cares about us or Superman, so we'll show them what the world without Superman is like."
Wait a minute. Sal just said "Did you know Dean Cain..." And he never finished his sentence. What was Sal gonna say?
I agree so much with your dislike for Guy Gardner. I mean, literally ANY other green lantern is better than him
Facetiously, Doomsday is coming. Giggity
from 08:54 to 09:50 is the best
I remember reading that Bibbo/Krypto story after the death of Superman when I was a kid. I also hadn't read Superman before his death. So I read "Bilbo's story" and I'm thinking "who is this, this is so lame... yet so awesome at the same time".
I was 3 when this happened, but my brother got all of the lead-up books and a couple of the polybag 75's. I still have them after my brother gave me all of his old comics. He also had New Mutants 97 and I remember that because when I looked through them I was pissed because he stopped getting New Mutants right when Deadpool came out... He couldn't have stuck around for one more month???
That's an awesome story! I was really expecting an angry comment about Booster from you... ;)
TV Little House Comics Haha! No, I understand that Booster wasn't very popular back then and he kinda sucked. That is the beauty of what he has become today, Booster wouldn't be nearly as cool if he didn't have a crappy past, it just fits his character so well. The Booster after 52 and in his run following by Geoff Johns is my Booster. The guy that went from a fame whoring joke to the guy that saves the multiverse on any given day without any credit. He has become a tragic and ironic hero since 52.
Rye Bread Returns 3: Getting Stale
So when you guys talk about future Back Issues, do you ever end with, "Ha, Ha, and then we kill Ben!" and then everyone stares at him for a few uncomfortable moments before laughing again? You know, everyone except Ben.
-They're gonna get you Ben, RUN!- :D
Can’t believe they made a comic off of my favourite Our Lady Peace song

This is it! Thank you!
I read the Death of Superman and I like it, but thought that the story could be told better. I will say the animated movie the Death of Superman staring Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn as Superman and Lois Lane did a better job of telling the story. What helps is that Peter J Tomasi wrote the screen play of that movie.
Ok I've watched all of thr back issues. I need more. I need my fix.
Wasn't there a version of doomsday when the kryptonians enemy xa du created doomsday?
Sal and Ben normal responses...
Ethan...HAHAHAHA
Now we understand the mishandling of the books! He's a mad scientist!!😮
Lol
This is what I learned about controversial or shocking stuff that is done where it manages to causes a shock wave in the public. Most of them are not really planned or expected what they written or done with a character will cause a rippling eruption everywhere, even outside of comics at a massive wide spread scale, where it causes a uproar. It's because usually makers operate by just throwing ideas and seeing what fits or works to readers. It's like throwing out random jokes seeing what gets the most laughs. This method has a downside just like the throwing random jokes method has. Occasionally one statement or action will get people, "triggered." It can be the bad kind or good. The funny thing is sometimes that something you would not expect to be a big deal to people or manage to cause them to be triggered.
Rye Bread Returns 2: The Embiggening
can you guys tell the second half to this story with the 4 different supermen. I love listening to your channel. very entertaining...
Did you guys see the superman doomsday animated movie?
Booster Gold on the Justice League. A dark period indeed.
16:33 rip ted sigh
When Guy Gardner and Booster Gold are your best heroes you know the JL is in trouble.
I actually like Guy Gardner lol.
This was the funniest Back Issues yet! I do agree that this was a bloated story arc, but I always enjoyed the DC Universe after the death. I mean Coast City being destroyed was a WTF moment for me.
Sal you began to mention a funny thing about Lois & Clark, what was that? I watched the hell out of that show while it originally aired, then tried watching reruns later and despised my kid self. The other thing you began to mention and stopped was about why the arm bands were not in every comic... I was on the short end of the stick on that and I bought three copies and opened them all! My friends all had them and that really pissed me off.
Still one of my favorite episodes. Especially pre MAPQUEST Doomsday scenario :D
What did you guys think of the way they've retold Death and Return across all the superman titles through the end of New52 and beginning of Rebirth?
That was the funniest hypothetical rant I've ever seen
Also, the kid that Superman saves later gets powers and tries to help Superman, no idea how that ends
Thoughts on Doomsday animated movie? Also, I really want to see a Back Issues on Watchmen and/or V for Vendetta, even if the only reason is so we get some more of Sal's Alan Moore impression.
I read this recently and I find that Superman has this really weird rivalry with Guy Gardener that is really stupid
"Well lex luthors dead because his friends are lame"
Great vid guys! Little known fact here but when DC first decided to kill Superman they had the idea to have Wolverine kill him and mentioned it to Marvel. Marvel didn't like the idea and they didn't want one of there characters kill Superman who was the first superhero so DC created Doomsday to kill Supes.
