These songs are off their Moving Pictures album in 1981! Track Listing: Tom Sawyer Red Barchetta YYZ (ZED) Limelight The Camera Eye Witch Hunt Vital Signs
There is so little footage of some of my fav bands and artists pre MTV, and I’m sad because they are getting forgotten. At least bands like RUSH and Queen had lots of film.
Alex always fits his solos into the framework of the song. So often guitar solos are just guitar solos, but he tries to build on and enhance the song without necessarily showing off. He can shred a guitar better than anyone, but he also knows exactly when to not do that.
These videos were recorded in Le Studio, a residential recording studio in the Laurentian Mountains near the town of Morin-Heights, Quebec. It became known as Rush's Abbey Road. It was a top tier recording studio where artists such as The Police (and later Sting recording solo) the Bee Gees, Chicago, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Nazareth, April Wine and Bryan Adams recorded their albums. These videos were recorded just as music videos were taking off, a lot of them were done as marketing tools to help advertise the albums. There is a video for April Wine's "I Like to Rock" filmed in the same room.
Sadly Le Studio went out of business in 2008 and then On 11 August 2017, the building was partially destroyed by "a suspicious" fire. The entire facility has now been torn down.
Alex has said this is his favorite guitar solo he ever did. It fit with the mood of the song...of being more insulated the more famous you get. It was very moody and slinky. He's a genius at finding just the right way to express the sentiments in a song through a guitar. Love these guys. Rush on!!!
This was shot at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec where Rush did a lot of recording as it was close to home. A number of other Canadian bands recorded there as well including April Wine. In earlier years Rush recorded in England and other places but that was putting a strain on their personal lives as they were away from home for long periods and all three were married. Great song.
Other great artists also used Le Studio at different times over the years. That includes The Police, The Bee Gees, Cat Stevens, Bryan Adams, Chicago, Celine Dion, David Bowie, Nazareth, and Sarah McLachlan, to name a few. Unfortunately, the studio got damaged by a fire, and it has since been demolished.
Sadly Le Studio went out of business in 2008 and then On 11 August 2017, the building was partially destroyed by "a suspicious" fire. The entire facility has now been torn down.
Le Studio was a go to for artists back in the mid 70s to the 1990, Bowie, The Police, Sting, Chicago, Bryan Adams and many more recorded there. It was state of the art.
All the video's shot at Le Studio were off the same album 'Moving Pictures' ( Tom Sawyer, Limelight & Vital Signs). The lyrics to this one deal with Neil's attitude to their increasing fame & how he dealt with that.
I got to see the Time Machine tour in Vancouver. Their middle set was all of 'Moving Pictures' front to back, which includes both Tom Sawyer and Limelight. Rush was also their own opener, closer and encore.
This song has Alex’s most beautiful solo IMO. The video was filmed at Le Studio in Morin Heights Quebec Canada. Back in the day it was the go-to recording studio for Rush. Unfortunately, it’s been abandoned for years and severely vandalized, there’s a video about it, you guys should check it out. Neil Peart even makes the trip to revisit it and reminisces about their good times there.
Their producer was the same guy for many years - Terry Brown - although later they would seek new producers. This album came out a little before music videos really took off as a thing. They released 3 or 4 promotional videos which were all shot in Le Studio, where they recorded the album.
Limelight is a favorite of mine as well as the next song you should listen to Red Barchetta! That song tells a story in the future where gas cars are banned (sounds like we’re heading that way now) and one mans uncle preserves a pristine car in his barn for him to take out and race his illegal car on twisty country roads before the Motor Law gives chance and the race is on! The drum track really rocks on this one as the chase insues the playing gets more intense.
@danblack8084 Red Barchetta = CLASSIC Rush and one of my favorite Rush songs... Actually Rush is one of my all time bands period and I've been listening to rock for umpteen years.
'One must put up barriers to keep ones self intact' Pretty cool song. He's singing about what it's like being on stage looking out. 'living in the limelight, the universal dream'.....Glad it made the playlist.
Neil was notoriously ill at ease with the adulation that came with fame and this song was his take on how to deal with it. Rush had at least three producers that I know of.
I recommend you react to "The Camera Eye" by Rush next. To me, Geddy's greatest vocal performance is on "The Camera Eye". There's also a blistering guitar solo by Alex near the end of the song.
Living on a lighted stage Approaches the unreal For those who think and feel In touch with some reality beyond the gilded cage Cast in this unlikely role Ill-equipped to act With insufficient tact One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme Living in a fisheye lens Caught in the camera eye I have no heart to lie I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend All the world's indeed a stage We are merely players Performers and portrayers Each another's audience outside the gilded cage Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme The real relation The underlying theme
All three had their individual solos at the same time and it all sounded perfect together. Granted Leif’s was the longest but to have all three with such strong pieces played at the same time is unheard of.
The recording studio is called Le studio (you can see the sign on the wall) and it's somewhere in Quebec Canada. As far as I know Rush always has had producers helping them. They are so good. Great to see young fellas enjoying them.
It burned down, unfortunately. I heard a radio interview with the owner of Le Studio not long ago and he seemed kind of detached over what happened. I think he just saw it as a simple past business and he's moved on to other ventures. Sure, he has many stories and good memories with the artists that stayed there but he wasn't that sentimental or over-nostalgic. I think that as outsiders, we tend to glamorize the business while the insiders just see it as a job they love but it's still work.
Limelight is my favourite Rush song because I absolutely love how besutifully the pure emotion in Geddy's voice and Alex's guitar solo brings out Neil's lyrical expression of his discomfort with life in the public eye. He was an introvert as I am, who needed time to himself to recharge his mental energy, and who valued meaningful relationships with those closest to him; he also struggled with anxiety issues stemming from a near-drowning incident at the age of 10, as recalled in his book Travelling Music and in an online article from Rolling Stone Magazine. If you'd like to hear more of the best from all three of them, I'd like to second the recommendation for Red Barchetta, particularly the Exit Stage Left performance. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
Read the lyrics. They tell a story of self preservation and how those in the entertainment industry feel about fans who think they personally know the band members.
Just keep in mind this was released in early 1981. MTV went on air later that year. ‘Videos’ weren’t a thing when this was recorded. Kind of surprised they even filmed this, although I am glad they did.
"I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend". Is my favorite line from the song, it was Neil's way of saying he's not going to be all smiles and overly happy to meet you. Neil hated press conferences and fan meet and greets, leaving that to Geddy and Alex.
This song and Spirit of the Radio are my favorite Rush songs, they are forever on my playlist and will never ever get skipped. Enjoying your channel, keep rocking!
As for what next for Rush you really need to do 2112 (comic story video), Cygnus X-1 Book 2 from Hemispheres (studio version) and La Villa Strangiato (live 1978)
Love Limelight it's perfection. I'm still waiting for you to react to La Villa Strangiato instrumental Pink Pop Festival in 1978. 🔥🔥🔥🤘Definitely playlist worthy.
This was , well it wasn't their studio . A few bands recorded there. But they recorded like 2 or 3 albums here. I believe they did moving pictures farewell to kings and maybe 2112 here. It was their favorite studio. It was way out in the woods up in Canada. It was called Le'Studio. It was like a resort kinda. They had some living quarters there and it was peaceful out in the woods . So they could be undistracted and be creative.
This is Le Studio in Canada. It was a legendary production studio... some April Wine videos were filmed here too. I believe it burned down some time ago. The Police and David Bowie also recorded here.
it is le studio. in winter at 30 below they'd finish recording and then play volleyball outside in summer alex would fly model planes. they have always had their own label but work with a producer
PS Every Rush song is playlist worthy…my Rush playlist is 21 hrs, 7 mins of masterpieces. (And I don’t actually have all their music as Applemusic doesn’t stock their entire catalogue:😠) thank god you can get clockwork angels on CD!
Can I recommend an addition for your playlist, Sam and Lucas? Find the studio track for the Canadian SCTV veterans (and actors) Bob and Doug McKenzie (those are character names, not their real ones), under the title The McKenzie Brothers...and the song "Take Off", which Geddy Lee does guest vocals on...and it's HOT! They released it in the 80s, during their heyday as a comedy duo. It would make for a good reaction too, honestly. Just dayin'. Geddy is AMAZING in it!
Someday some people will run up to you and be like "HEY! You're Samuel, and you're Lucas, I freaking LOVE you guys!" And you'll be all "whoa..., what the..." "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend" and it must be such a weird thing, complimentary, but still awkward.
I'm new here but I have a Rush suggestion... 2112 it's long & amazing. I've seen almost all the bands you cover in concert. Another song is Scorpions The Zoo I think you would like it. Also if you get a chance to watch movie The Dirt about Montley Crew it has some truth to it. I'm probably old enough to be your Grandma lol but the 80's were my time 😂 my kids swear I'm in the Crew video & I was at the concert that Tommy Lee's drums & he came out over audience & started spinning over our head I think I got Tommy Lee's sweat in my eye 😆✌🏼
New Subs 😎👍 next one from Rush - Red Sector A ( with lyric ) = song about holocaust . Geddy Lee ( singer ) parents was survive to holocaust . Neil Peart ( drummer ) deep lyric . 🎶🎶
Do you know how he got the name "Geddy"? His little brother couldn't say "Gary," and instead called him "Geddy." I've listened to Rush since 1972, and never knew that bit of trivia until a few days ago. Nice channel guys. Keep reacting to "Classic Rock" of the 60s and 70s and you'll be just fine. It's the best music era ever, that's why it's called "Classic Rock."
What's funny is that, except for the airbuds, Samuel could have gone to class, when this album came out, and he would have fit right in. Three years earlier, Lucas would have.
When I was in college...late 80s, a couple frat brothers were in a Rush cover band. Musicianship was mediocre but they had a lead singer (a female) that was a spot on Geddy Lee. It was the only reason they got any gigs. Good luck with your new channel. Just remember...be honest. Don't react to songs you've already heard. We can usually tell.
Hey guys I just caught this video after watching the EVH Tribute !! I grew up with the with the all the poeple in RUSH , We used to go to the studio (just north of Toronto in cottage country) you see in that Limelight video to party and jam !! I wanted to check out your reactions to the music, to the tunes that were done back when we were kids and see how you FEEL it .... Also check out Neil's work in the Tom video... Thanks so much !! Remember that before 1981 and the birth of MTV, their was no videos unless the bands played live or recorded themselves.

Living on a lighted stage
Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality beyond the gilded cage
Cast in this unlikely role
Ill-equipped to act
With insufficient tact
One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact
Living in the limelight, the universal dream
For those who wish to seem
Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination
The real relation, the underlying theme
Living in a fisheye lens
Caught in the camera eye
I have no heart to lie
I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend
All the world's indeed a stage
We are merely players
Performers and portrayers
Each another's audience outside the gilded cage
Living in the limelight, the universal dream
For those who wish to seem
Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination
The real relation, the underlying theme
Living in the limelight, the universal dream
For those who wish to seem
Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination

YYZ from this same record is a MUST. Especially the Rush In Rio live version. Most insane crowd response ever to boot.
