    Backlog is like a list of boring tasks that you force yourself to do at some point in your life, when in reality games are supposed to bring you joy, fun and relaxation during your free time.
    Don't fall into the trap of committing to games, or you'll go crazy.

      It’s not that the games are boring. If a game is a boring, remove it from your backlog.
      It’s just that you aren’t engaged with games that you aren’t playing and see getting into them as a chore. But when you finally do, you have fun

    • @Gustavozxd13
      @Gustavozxd13 Рік тому +5

      it's boring if you make it boring. Just treat it as a list of games you're interested in, not something you force yourself to do it. Same thing with books and movies that you have on your "backlog". Check them out when you want and have a good time, no reason to treat it like an obligation.

    Sometimes I find that when I finally get to a certain game in my backlog, I end up playing it at the right time to really impact me. There have been games where if I played them when they came out, I probably wouldn't have appreciated them as much.

      I can definitely relate to that. I almost always choose what game to play based on my mood instead of what's next in line. And sometimes when I don't feel like the game hits at the right time, I put it back down to be picked up again later. Thank you for your comment! :)

      @@jerryjohn3815It's hard to say without knowing what games you have played, what kind of games you are into, and whether you are only interested in recent games- or you don't mind playing older generation games. You can't go wrong with scrolling through the best rated games on metacritic, and seeing what takes your fancy. It might be worth searching for hidden gems/underrated games too. Or just thinking about games that you've played and love and wouldn't mind revisiting.
      With that said, here are some random recommendations:
      Batman: Arkham Knight.
      Prey.
      Metro: Last Light.
      Doom/Doom Eternal.
      DMC 5.
      Portal 2.
      Spec Ops: The Line.
      Bioshock Infinite.
      Ori: Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps.

      You're absolutely right. Gaming is just a hobby and the backlog basically is just a list of games we want to play. So instead of stressing out over all of the games we 'need' to play eventually, why not just enjoy the one we're playing right now :)

    I think backlog also starts growing because we (a group at least) is trying to keep up with a mass producing industry.
    So far I've been able to focus on 2 games right now, without losing my focus just by telling myself: "The other games aren't going anywhere."
    It takes a bit to have that mindset, but I feel so far it's rather helpful.

    I liked the points you made in this video. They really do impact the gaming experience, especially for those of us who hide on games we’re familiar with because of the anxiety that comes with too much backlog. I also think that there might be some pressure people face when it comes to wanting to go into a game completely blind, since by the time they get around to playing the game further down their ‘library’ (love the word you used there), there’s already so much content and spoilers that you can’t really have a true blind experience anymore.

    I work and I’m a student so I don’t have a lot of time anymore to play games but I started trimming down my backlog and wow it has made gaming so much more enjoyable again. My main method was just asking myself: do I want to play this game because I’ve heard it’s good, or do I want to play it because I simply want to play it? This helped me cut off a lot of games that I felt pressured to play because people were praising them. If I had more free time I’d probably be open to trying more games but now I don’t really feel pressured to constantly be playing certain games. My backlog has worked best when it’s small and achievable

    I’ve found that I actually worry about my backlog fairly often, and it kinda sucks. I’ll be playing a game and i’m wondering how much longer I have left so I can finish it and move on to the next one. But games are supposed to be fun! I recently played Alan Wake 2 (amazing game btw) and took my time; made me realise that I should play what I enjoy and not worry about what I haven’t played yet (although I do use Backloggd for a general idea of what games i’m interested in)
    I guess my personal advice to people is just to play what you enjoy, play at your own pace, and don’t force yourself through something if you’re not enjoying it.
    I’m glad you made a video about this, it’s cool to see someone talking about it :)

    I just got ps plus extra and my gaming backlog essentially doubled in a day. What you said about changing the name to "library" instead, really will help me realise I don't NEED to clear this list. It will always be an ever growing list of experiences. Some of which, I will never get the chance to actally experience.
    My advice: don't start a game with the mindset of finishing it. If you're not enjoying something part way in, move on. There are so many potentially better experiences on that list

    • @Ruubzy
      @Ruubzy  Рік тому +1

      That’s a good mindset to have! When I don’t like a game I move on from it, but then have a difficult time choosing the next game to play because I feel that the choice weighs heavier. But at the end of the day gaming is just a fun hobby and we need to keep it that way! :)

    After watching Daryl Talks Games’ videos about completing his backlog, I made an excel sheet with an estimated completion time attached. I think this works for me because it gives me an idea what I’m committing to and also I use it to monitor the games I own/ want to purchase and help chose what I’ll play next.
    The key for me is telling myself that if I don’t like it, it can be dropped or revisited etc.
    I think mindset approaching the backlog is key as the back log to me is a catalogue or list of what I want to play, if I own it already and how long I will be playing it. I don’t view it as a list I need to complete as the list is ever expanding and evolving.

    • @Ruubzy
      @Ruubzy  Рік тому +2

      Yes I loved his videos on it as well! It’s very easy to get into the mindset of “I NEED to play these games”, whilst we all started the backlog with a “I WANT to play these games” idea in mind. Thank you for your comment! :)

    Gaming backlogs are a strange beast!
    Sometimes I feel like I want to play a game to get it off the backlog, or just to make the number smaller (I'm also sitting around 100+ if that makes you feel better). I've tried so many "fun" ways of working through it all - themed months, writing reviews, etc. - but none of them really make it seem less daunting.
    Yesterday I picked up a game on a whim that's been in my backlog since release (Islets). Initially I thought, "oh this is an indie game, I'll be able to clear it out quickly" but after an hour my attitude changed to "oh this game is f***ing amazing, I want to take my time with it." And I think about it all the time that I'm not playing it! It's nice to have that feeling about a game again and to be sort of "consumed" by the excitement of it rather than seeing it as a chore.
    PS: I love the music choices in this video, I recognised Toothless Dance (I forgot the actual name) and the hangout music from Persona 4 :)

    My trick for it is to record your gameplay on UA-cam or Twitch, if you're close to dropping the game, your viewers will try to convince you to get through it. This trick also lets you keep up with the story for a big game like an RPG. Also tell your friends that you won't be available for playing multiplayer games because you'll be playing a real game.

    some months ago I've made a further push to distance myself from live services more so I can focus on the singleplayer games I've been dreaming of playing for years. I still get on VRChat almost every night and I catch up with the V-Bucks missions in STW, but that still usually leaves me at least a little time in the day to play one or two other games on an off day. It's quite fulfilling going through more games than before, but it does also make me realise that I have so many games I'll never finish everything. With so many things new and old to be eager to try and newer games and ones of certain genres generally having much longer runtimes, it can be a little discouraging chipping at the same game for a month because it's grindy in nature, or just has a LOT of side content. Regardless, I'm valuing and enjoying my time!

    the only game i had growing up was minecraft and that was all i needed because i innovated and tried new things, new challenges, got creative. The same can be applied to other games. I'm such an optimizer, I didn't realize that gaming lists and backlog is a common problem lol I have lists for everything. I can't help it so what helped for me was categorizing them in terms of priorities of when I want to play, keeping track of what I am playing, what I own and will play, what I want to buy (mainly to keep an eye out on used ones). As I have 15 unplayed games piled up, some of which I'm playing the previous one of, I realize I need to stay focused and present and remember this is for fun. Cyberpunk is the only game I'm currently playing I feel like I can really immerse, enjoy, walk around, pick up side quests when I feel like it and want to stretch out. Maybe the fact that it's so rich and open world is part of it.
    I calendar gaming into my schedule (I calendar everything to stay focused on errands, work, social, and capture things and be more realistic with how much time I'm putting into things). I am playing 4 different games on rotation and focusing on those until I get bored. I do look at my list more than I should to re-categorize, so that might be something I do less of. I wanted to play the Yakuza series then got overwhelmed with all the versions so instead of doing all of them resolved to play the 7 and then infinite wealth and that's it. I won't have time to go through all of them nor will I. I think I should also self-discipline and stop watching these gaming channels showing me what's coming up when I'm catching up on all games since I didn't have a console since the PS3 so I have a lot of PS4 games to catch up on, which lucky for me, are often remastered and given free as an upgrade. Woot!

I have PS4, PC, Xbox 360, PS2+PS1+PSP emulator games, other online games and my wishlist games. I made a backlogg to list which games I'm progressing right now and to get done now whenever I can play games because I don't want to leave them on hold, forget what's going on and forget the controls too.
    And I find no obligation to play all the games in my backlogg anytime soon, because most of them are free (emulator games) or I got at huge discounted prices (like Arkham Collection got it for around £8 when it was supposed to be £40-60) using the PS app wishlist notifications. I don't feel the need to play them all any time soon, unless I've already started them. But I do eventually want to play them all.

    Personally I've made great strides in "beating my backlog" over the last 2 years & writing down or tracking what games I beat has really helped feel good about it... Even if most have been new releases I was excited about & less retro stuff that I want to get to.
    It's also helped that I focus on beating the main story for most games & ignore any meaningless or filler side content. So for example FF16, I beat all side missions & hunts which helped flesh out the world's story & I'd highly recommend doing, but for Diablo 4 I skipped side quest dialog & just completed them for rewards while watching the cinematics & listening to main story dialog... Then there's Exoprimal, one of my most enjoyed games of the year surprisingly. However I've best the game finally after 33 hours of online matches with friends & I couldn't tell you the first thing about the story, I skipped every cutscenes & cinematic I could... While listening to music over the in-game cutscenes that are unskippable.
    I'm just not playing it for it's throw away story, it's fun shooting dinos with friends in a Dynasty Warriors style gameplay against another team or sometimes with them.
    Also I consider a "Backlog" to be "future fun I plan to have" & changing the meaning helped me not feel stressed about it. Lastly, I look for any reason for me to NOT buy a new game because I'm a sucker for co-op games & I end up buying a lot of those by default.

      Haha that's a great look on the backlog! I try to do the same myself. I see my library more like some sort of wishlist nowadays. Games I'd like to play, IF I get the change. But if not. There have been awesome moment I've already had in gaming which I cherish.
      Also, with FF16, personally I found that a lot of the side quest were just simple fetch quest. Compared to like FF7 Remake, the side quest were lacking a little bit in my opinion. I would have loved to see a bit more personality from the people Clive conversed with. But overall I really enjoyed it :)

    I feel kind of a similar way as you, maybe I should call it a collection over a "backlog". Maybe the reason why I never quit gaming to begin with was because I always had something to try out and play, and I have been doing it for so long that I don't know how to stop. The lesson is simple - enjoy your hobby the way you want. If having a backlog helps you to enjoy gaming - have it. If NOT having a backlog helps you to enjoy gaming - guess what? Don't have it.
    Personally, keeping track of my backlog helps me with playing more games and enjoy games more. Sometimes, I might get into a game only after 10, 20, or even more hours, so sometimes I really need to push myself to play some games before I start loving it but it's important to keep balance between "trying something new" and "just enjoy playing what you're playing".
    The best thing about gaming - you can play till you're 90 years old and that hobby won't get stale, since there's just that many good games!

I still have hundreds of games to go through and I also have PS Plus Premium and rn I'm going through the Premium library and trying out and playing games and then I'll go back down to PS Extra.
    I organise my games based on time priorities atm because of PS Premium... so I've found how long the games take to play and am playing the shortest games first... I also allow myself to stop playing a game after 30m-1hr. I used to force myself to finish games that I didn't like and I now realise that I can try games and if I don't like them, I don't have to play them.
    I also have a book backlog, thankfully I think it's smaller than my video game backlog... but also I visit my local library and borrow books from there as well.
    And the worst part is that I only have roughly 2 hours a day to spend on reading and gaming... the rest of the time I'm busy with working, spending time with my spouse, helping my kids with their homework and spending time with them (they also read and play video games), and attempting to help my spouse keep up the house so it doesn't look like a tornado (kids, lol) went through our house.

I used to be able to do that when I was younger and ignorant of the overall gaming community and their opinions. However nowadays it feels like I'm playing games wrong if I don't play a franchise in order or every single game.
    An example is dead space. I really want to play dead space 2. However I have to play dead space 1 first. Everytime I've tried I've gotten 3-5 chapters in, stop for whatever reason and take forever to come back to it. Restart and basically never make it out of the first half and just end up not enjoying the game. I'd like to just move on to dead space 2 but I know I have to play the first game because it's what you're supposed to do.

    I think people use their backlogs as a deposit to just throw games they haven't played there and stamp a "one day I'll play it" on it.
    Making an actual short list of games I want to beat works great for me. For example, ever since I played Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous I decided to get into CRPGs hardcore. Since then I have played Baldur's Gate 1, 2 and 3, Fallout 1, 2, Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity 1, Colony Ship and Planescape Torment.
    Before doing this I used to get paralyzed by the hundreds of games I have accumulated. Having a short goal ensures I'll always know what to play next, and if there's a new release I want to play there's no problem, I resume the list after I beat it.

    • @Ruubzy

      Yeah that's definitely the way my backlog started out. At a certain point I thought: "There are quite a lot of games I'd like to play, let's make a list". I have a bunch of rules for back logs. Don't buy more games until you are satisfied with the games you have in your backlog. You don't have to beat the games. Just try them. If your not having fun. Stop playing.
    It is wasteful to buy a game and then never play it. If there are upcoming or new games you want. Just write a list of games. Later you may not be as hyped for those games or lose interest completely. Just play the games you have first.
    I highly consider going back to a game I haven't finished instead of purchasing another one because I dont have too many games. If you keep buying new games. You'll just never play any of them.
    When I was a kid I think I just wanted to collect games and not even really play them. But I actually go back and play games over and over again. Even tho I don't get new ones often. I guess I try to find ones I really like, over Just owning too many for the option of having more.
    I usually buy used old games for cheap. I buy a game if I really have a feeling to play it.

      That’s a great strategy! I personally mostly list down the games I would like to play in the future. Most of the games in my backlog/library are games that I haven’t purchased yet. The ones that I do already have are the ones that I’m getting trough right now. Games are getting really expensive so this way I don’t waste a lot of money on things that I probably won’t play for another 2 years or something, and by then most games have gone down in price at least somewhat! But I think gamers should divide their games into how long It may take to beat some games and play certain games throughout the year. For example I play 1 very long game each year while covering many smaller games throughout the year. This allows me to slowly pitch off the backlog while enjoying and admiring the long game that I choose. That's jut how I have been doing It. For anyone who may be confused I recommend this method maybe it works for you. Cool video. ^_^

      That's a pretty good strategy! Personally the long games tend to have good stories and suck me up entirely. But once I finish one of those I try to stay away from 30+ hour games for a little bit :) Thanks for your comment!

    I just finished FF 16 after 84 hours! The first of the series I did dlc & all.. I never have the patience for platinums tho.. That’d drive me nuts! For me it’s ocd about having a balanced collection of many genres.. I keep on thinking collect now and play later.. You never know there may come a day when they’ll be outlawed as far as purchasing😜
    I’m sure I’ll have more time when I retire anyways

    • @Ruubzy

      FF16 has such a great story! For me it’s the same with the different genres. Most times I want to play a different genre after finishing one. So after an action RPG like FF16 I think I played something more laidback (can’t remember though, been a while haha) personally I love collecting physical games so when those go on sale I can’t help myself to pick one up. But most of the physical games I have are games I’ve played, or new pick-ups that I want to play soon. It’s mostly the online stuff that keeps piling up 😅

    the only time I've ever felt "guilty" for not playing stuff, was because of gamepass. Any second I spend not playing a gamepass game is wasted money on the subscription, and boy that sucks. Other than that tho, this new culture related to games like feeling guilty for not play stuff, or feeling guilty because you're stuck playing your favorite games over and over, is so foreign to me. I naturally always want to play new games so eventually I'll pick something up and play it and have a great time and on to the next one. But I guess I'm in the minority or something.

    • @Ruubzy
      @Ruubzy  Рік тому

      I think it has mostly to do with a fear of missing out. You hear so many people talk about their favorite 'must play' games. So when I do I note them down on a list and from there it just keeps growing. In my experience it's often not really a feeling of guilt towards not playing a game, but more of a "I really want to play the game for myself and see why it's their favorite game".

  • @PhantomDogman

    Because I don't have money to spend money on new games, at least for steam library I have started using "what I should steam". Finally with it I managed to finish Half-Life and it's expansions.
    Now started HL2. But of course played different game between Half-Life games so I wouldn't get burn out. Either by using ''what I should steam" or wanted to play the game.
    Sadly I won't be able to play HL Alyx in near future because it's VR game, but even then even with no vr mod (which isn't intended method to play) I won't be able to play it.
    And even if I have little money, then if the game is on sale for very cheap I might get it. But most likekly it's very old game, or maybe from indie dev. So I'm not playing modern day AAA games.

  • @ccclll987

    wait wait wait, so there are people getting anxious because they arent playing enough different games? WHAT
    Guys seriously, if you start to feel any kind of obligation to play at all, quit playing. Do something else. Playing games is just one way to spend some free time, relax and sometimes learn a good lesson about life and morality. If it becomes anything but this, you should seriously rethink the way you look at gaming. Playing hundreds of games is irrelevant and actually harmful because most likely you are wasting time and opportunity. The sole thought of a gaming backlog is horrifying.

    • @Ruubzy
      @Ruubzy  Рік тому +1

      I think it's the fact that at some point there are so many games you'd like to play you get choice paralysis. "What if I think I'll really like this game but it just isn't for me?" kind of thoughts. I've been dissapointed because I ended up not liking games I thought I would really enjoy. So when you then go back to your list of games and want to pick out something else it felt like the next choice weighed even more.
      I think the backlog always starts out as a positive thing. There are lots of games you'd like to try so you make a list. But if that list causes problems, that's when the backlog is unhealthy. Gaming is fun, that's why I want to play many games :)

    • @ccclll987
      @ccclll987 Рік тому

      @@Ruubzy to answer the quoted question: if you pick a game and you dont enjoy, you simply quit it and play something else. Intrusive thougths might override this one and most likely will not be beneficial to you.
      Also, making a list puts pressure on you, considering that gaming should be a way to relieve from stress. If you dotn make any list, in the long run you will only remember about those games that really attracted you for a reason or another, making you forget about all the other less meaningful ones. Your memory and your liking will automaticlaly choose the best for you making you discard the rest.
      I hope this can be helpful to you or other readers.
