I just started offset backing Thursday at my school, and for someone who has never driven a combination vehicle, it was whooping my ass lol. But I've been watching g a lot of videos such as this and have a better understanding of where I was going wrong. So come Tuesday when I go in, I'm feeling pretty confident that I'm going to knock it out. Thanks for posting.
as a truck driver was 28 years Driving Experience 4 million miles accident-free certified I can tell you that backing from the offset side is not easy. for a new student who did a relatively good job the main point in being take your time and do not get in a hurry you will do fine
I gotta do my road test on Monday and I'm still having problems with offset backing, it's definitely not easy. I heard the key is to keep the cones and the side of the trailer in your mirror. Once you lose sight of the trailer and cones you run into trouble, it usually means you're not backing towards the spot.
let me just say that when i posted this video i knew there would be good comments and of course bad comments, as with any video. However, i posted this video so that i could later view it once i have some experience and to see my progression from when i first started driving with absolutely zero experience. This is how i motivate myself to become a better and safer driver because i can see my progression in this career. To those who had good comments, thank you. And to those who had bad comments, thank you. everyone learns differently and sees every situation in a different way. you have to find something that motivates you in your own way. this is mine. cheers.
This is it!!! I take my test tomorrow and I am nervous af I been bombing my offsetting in the practice range this is the best video I’ve seen thank you!!
I think you did a very good job - as you say (and what the haters do not seem to comprehend), you have never done this before, never been in a tractor/trailer so in my eye you did perfect. Of course, we should not forget all the really perfect, faultless and experienced armchair drivers who can obviously do this better than anyone in the world.
thank you, for posting this video this a good example to learn specially for a first time driving a tractor trailer, as of people think it is not easy.. even i had mistakes when i was training and even tho i passed the roadtest im still learning everyday, and learning to drive a combination vehicle makes you a safer driver actually.. :)
@morellana8397 just now sewing this lol i failed then passed the next one it felt like they were failing everyone the first time around to make a quick buck. But I did almost jack knife the truck lmao
Owners don't spend lots of money on trucks at schools. Most trucks on the yard are not street/highway driveable. Maybe one or two are ready so student can do driving test after passing everything else. Inexperienced drivers. No need to buy new trucks. And as long as you do your pre trip correct is all that matters.
I really needed to see this video im in school right now for cdl and am having problems with off setting and alley docking if anyone can help please respond
He oversteering he did good holding his trailer to drift in the offset lane because my classmate had the same problem he used to hold his bend too long and his trailer used to end up in straight back lol.u aiming for ur offset lane once u see ur trailer bend to the lane than look out ur other mirror cuz it will tell u where to turn than u give it a lil right left action at that point its straight line backin and everybody should know how straight back go if u dnt offset should be least ur problems like my instructor told us lol
If they haven’t already done so they should install cameras in the back of the truck like they do in cars. I never felt comfortable driving a car I was to scared what really gave me the courage to start driving was my truck I felt so much safer and comfortable in my mountaineer truck.
Either he's mirrors off or he's turning too sharp. Because it was too far to the right on the left all set and now it's too far to the left on his offset could be the mirrors or something. Because that does play with your judgment.
Or he's trying to figure it out through the mirrors and in the mirrors are giving him a different feedback or he's not adjusting the mirrors to him not making any excuses but that does play with your judgment. Because it's either going to put you too far to the right or it's going to put you too far so left and if that keeps going on consistently then there's some kind of issue either with the mirrors people like to think otherwise but that does play a big part because you have to look at it through those mirrors if they're off slightly you're going to be off.
Brake light out is nothing. one of the trucks we used in the range in my school only had 13 tires (with 14 wheels), and the driver's side door latch didn't work from the outside. You had to reach through the window to open it. but the trucks we took on the road and tested in were in good shape.
Mike Hardin those trucks don't have to be perfect. I wouldn't buy new trucks for inexperienced drivers. Don't see why people don't understand that. Just do your pre trip as if it was a street/highway ready truck.
You can not see the driver's front wheels and the shadow kills most of the view of the tractor wheels. It is best viewed from the side of the truck that the driver is backing to and in front of the vehicle so you can see his front wheels turn.
heb ze geen stuurfouten zien maken, alleen in plaats van verder achteruit willen rijden in dezelfde positie wat vooruit rijden en dan in dezelfde positie verder achteruit blijven rijden. volgens mij verstaat ze de theorie
+Trey Ezernack When you get hired most companies want you to get out twice when alley docking and they have G.O.A.L. (Get Out And Look) on every truck mirror. The not getting out while backing refers to an idiotic old school training method.
+The Accidental Trucker my brother he is an old school trucker, he may only be 30, but his dad was an independent trucker for 35 years and he taught my brother the correct way to drive a truck. The new school truckers, need to be taught by an old school truck driver on the proper way to drive a truck. Like for having to get out of your truck to check, my brother doesn't even do that. The reason I'm using my brother as an example, is because I'm only 15
+Dylan Meinhardt If you talk to a lot of the old school drivers that aren't completely full of crap, they will will tell the when they started out thy had to GOAL...especially on a blindside. There's a TA on I-40 exit 37 you should visit to see my point. It is one of the worst parking lots in the I have seen and the every driver that's parks in the spaces up against and facing the road use at least two spotters. It's near impossible to get in there without a spotter and most people still GOAL for themselves. At that place its like an unwritten rule that after you get into your spot you hang out in front of the trucks and wait to help others into the space. I guess when I said "idiotic old school training method" what I really meant was stupid. Over confidence is typically why backing accidents happen.
+The Accidental Trucker I'm not trying to insult you or anything, mainly because I don't have my Class A CDL yet because I'm only 15. Anyway, a lot of the old school truck drivers, like my brother, are a lot better skilled at driving and backing than most of these new school trained ones. There are some good new school trained drivers that have a lot of skill and can back up really well. I don't have any physical proof of my brother actually doing this, but he said he's been told by people that he can't get in his truck and trailer into certain areas, but he proved them wrong, but my brother says he has done a lot of things. I'm not calling him a liar either because he then later proved some of the things he said he could do. But all it depends on the driver and the drivers skill when it comes to backing up.
+Dylan Meinhardt Yes, some are better than others old or new school. But when you watch a video from a truck driving school you also have to keep in mind that they are teaching people how to pass the CDL test not how to be a trucker. That's what the time spent in training at a company is for. problem there is that some companies train for two weeks and then that person a trainer. the company I went to after truck driving school is VERY strict on training and procured good, safe drivers which is why I spent 7 weeks in a trainers truck that had several years of experience. TDS = Pass test not learn to be a trucker.
james melton lol you sound like me. The right side is so easy. That left.....UGH! I stayed a few hours late to continue working on it. I think I have it though.
it's easy as shit...lol....off set to the left: 12 oclock turn to the right... watch your spot mirror until end of the trailer covers the mid cone, hard right to the left to straighten the tractor with the trailer... straight back watching the middle cone with the spot mirror(left mirror)... stay at least a foot away when you get the ass of the trailer in the box then 12 oclock turn to the left for 4 secs then hard right to straighten up, then straight back...lol
Thank you. And if it's easy for individuals. I don't see why they talk crap to those that have a difficult time. Geez it's not that hard to be encouraging.
Jay Class don't bother explaining anything to that super trucker. Hundreds of thousands of them out there think they are the best at everything, but great at none.
I would not waste my money at this place so far I can see three things wrong ,, # 1 he has a break light out # 2 did he learn how to a walk around CIRCLE CHECK !!!! #3 why show this to new drivers ?? teach them how to set there trailer up first for a good back up
it's still a Truck I've been driving for 25 years at present I am gas taker drive for the last 17 years I also have been a Driver Trainer if you would have pull out of that first spot and hooked to the right did a button hook to put the ass end of the trailer in line of the second spot snapped it straight after your button hook all you would have to do is push it back in the hole
+Kevin Stanley i agree, every situation is different but if you stick to one pattern 9 times Outta 10 that's what's going to alleviate a lot of problems

Nathaniel Penn yes it is. I'm in school and working on this manuvour. It can be a pain.
thanks. I thought I am the only one who get painful in offset backing maneuver

Awesome video thanks for sharing.
brake light out at cdl school? somebody didnt do pretrip i guess!
Lol...they say it don't matter how bad the truck messed up at the school lol

very good job, keep at it myself also is a first time driver
when not sure always get out an look take your time not a race beginner
R u a driver? If so can u mentor me?
Thanks for sharing Sir
I do believe that you're going to have to call maintenance on that one.

a lot of know-it-alls on the computer, used to be the tv room in the old days.
arent you supposed to always turn the trailer towards the driver side when backing? thought the handbook says that
You don't always have that option.
A short pull up each time after seeing we’re trailer tandems are would have helped a lot . Remember four-way flashers on for safety, I’m backing up.
If they haven’t already done so they should install cameras in the back of the truck like they do in cars. I never felt comfortable driving a car I was to scared what really gave me the courage to start driving was my truck I felt so much safer and comfortable in my mountaineer truck.

I just got my Cdl , I am sure not easy backing up

dont you think they do that to see if you question it? after all its not road safe right.
Very encouraging to see 😊
Hey hey there's a brake light out on the passenger side trailer.
Anyone notice the lights on the trailer? He failed pre trip inspection.
Our instructor doesn't like us getting out of the truck. If you can see the cones, there's no reason to get out.
Bobby - I won't dare do it in 4 wheel drive
You might wanna get your right brake light fixed before you go for you test
You can not see the driver's front wheels and the shadow kills most of the view of the tractor wheels. It is best viewed from the side of the truck that the driver is backing to and in front of the vehicle so you can see his front wheels turn.
