The Dash 8-100 is the smallest variant of the Dash 8 family, seating just 37 passengers. Several operators have flown these on behalf of Air Canada since the late 1980s, but until the end of October this year, they only flew out of Eastern Canada.
These are planned to be retired later next year, so when I heard they were moving out west for a bit, I had to jump on one.
Today, I see what it's like to fly on Air Canada's smallest Dash 8!

Me too! Pro quality VO's are nice. The video's are also clinical without any attempts at being a star! I enjoy Paul Lucas as well but there are some that are screaming "look at me" .

The other ones spend so much damn time telling us how awesome the snacks are and how the socks fit; I could care less. I want to hear the engine sounds, see the interiors, take in the flight and its different segments; and enjoy seeing what airports I've never been to look like. No frills is preferred.

Up until recently, the -100 was the workhorse for Air Canada Express between Toronto and cities throughout Northern Ontario. I've flown them dozens of times between YYB and YYZ, until today when I flew with the -300 for the first time. As small and cramped they may be, they're a perfect fit to connect those communities with lower demand that wouldn't be able to fill a Q400.

I love flying in the 100 it feels like a better fit to the airframe than the 300s or 400s. Some of the Dash 8-100s are being retrofitted into cargo configuration at Voyager Aviation in North Bay Ontario where the final assembly and testing of the Bombardier Waterbomber used to take place. It's giving a new life for some of these aircraft. These planes were awesome

My Dad flew these "Hot Rod" Dash 8s when they were brand new for Air Oregon. A significant step up from the earlier Metroliners and F-27s Air Oregon used.
He loved this airplane. He always used some form of it's name in passwords. Like DHC Dash 8.
These -100s always looked perfectly proportional.
The later models all got too long looking. Especially the Q400s. All great airplanes but not as aesthetically pleasing to me.

On the climbout, you shorten the footage by doing short segments in real time which gives the viewer a chance to see the scenery. This is infinitely better than the youtubers who fast-forward through the same portions of the flight. Thank you for taking the time to edit in this fashion.

You're not officially an Albertan especially a Northern Albertan until you've done the Edmonton-Calgary run in one of these... Rode one of these back in 2011 for work. Full house that day too. Every seat filled. It really reminds me of riding in someone's minivan but it's still a decent ride...

Ten-Thousand hours in the "Mighty-Dash". If you MUST spend a decade flying in the Regionals, this is a pretty good place to sit. Not so much these days with the proliferation of small jets, but back when I did it the Dash was just about the best thing flying at the Regionals. Lots of Shorts, Beech 1900s, The God Awful Jetstream, etc.

I love these -100s. Back in the day (late 80s 🙄) when I would be called out of my dept because we were in need of an FA for a YTZ-EWR (or YUL &YOW) had one Capt. who would turn the seatbelt sign on about 20-25 min early to give me time to lockdown everything and spend 30mins upfront going over the the DH8 flight deck! God I do miss those days!! Great work!! 👍✌️

My Dad used to fly those very same Dash 8's. He started with AirBC a few years before they got the DHC-8-102's and continued into the 8-311's (and 8-314's when Chorus Aviation bought Canadian Regional).
So many great memories sitting in the jump seat!
There may be some good news for this size of aircraft from the new de Havilland Canada, as they are talking with industry about making evolved 100 and 300 versions to replace the legacy Dash 8's being retired.

I always thought the Dash 8 100 would make a terrific party plane! Victoria or Vancouver to Palm Springs with fuel /gourmet lunch on- loaded in San Francisco or San Jose.
Make the trip the start of the vacation. It could be a part of a golf package or whatever else floats your boat! The planes are not too big but big enough to be comfortable.. Just a thought. Great video.

This brings back memories of my only flight on an airliner we flew from SeaTac Washington to Kelona BC on Horizon Air flight flying the Dash 8. It was set up for 33 seats and there were only 14 of us on the flight, same 5 abreast seating in the back row .. It was quite a ride as we hit a strong down draft coming in over Lake Okanogan landing. it was back when Horizon first introd that flight, Went to see our daughter but surprising it was no faster than driving the 700 miles.

I have only flown on the Dash 8 (-300) once, with Jazz, from YYC to YQR. I was sitting in row 2 opposite the propeller, and to be honest, it scared me. The sounds, the prop spinning at great speed outside your window, it all made we wish I was back on the ground. To make it worse, the flight was about 15 minutes longer than if it had been a jet. I know that was silly of me to feel like that, especially now that most flights from YQR to YYC are on Dash 8's

Hey Alex! Having flown on the Q-100 a few times before with Air Creebec, I have to say that this little aircraft is a surprisingly comfortable ride! Beside the vibrations when you sit near the propellers, the seats are actually not as narrow as I expected and I don’t feel extremely confined in it’s small cabin. It’s nice to see how it is to fly on Air Canada’s version though! Thanks for sharing this trip report :D

Great video! I always flew on these things to YSB and YYB when there were many more of them in the fleet and I still think that there is a need for these things in Canada since we have so many northern airports with smaller cities/towns that in fact require them. But I guess AC prefers cutting frequency on these types of routes by using larger planes like the Dash-8-400, which carriers more than double the capacity of the 100. Some of these routes have been stripped down from 4-6 daily to 2 daily and its pretty unfortunate since that minimizes connections and other options if a flight were to be delayed or canceled. Even for areas like Sarnia and Kingston, the Dash-3 is still a bit too big!

Alex hi from YYC thanks for another enjoyable aviation experience..
I've been flying Air Canada like it or not as a business passenger for 30 + years and trust their fleet maintenance teams in house or contracted. However to your point Alex, AC at least breakout the pressure washer from time to time, along with addressing the missing areas of paint on this 100 both basic maintenance. Michael Rousseau pride in the appearance of YOUR fleet starts and ends with you. I just bet their isn't a single blemish on that palatial new furniture in your Montreal office. Oh by the way Mr Rousseau with fuel costs being what they are hint, your fleet will burn less fuel with clean fuselages.
You wont find a single Westjet or Porter Airline aircraft looking like this Dash 100. Time to remove Air Canada from all domestic service and let others with pride in their fleets appearance take over.
Thanks again Alex see you next time.

I took one of these from Sault Ste. Marie, ON to my home in Toronto and it was my first time on a turbo prop and honestly, one of the sketchiest things I have ever been on. I call them Cropdusters

Coastaku dash8s, and all of the q400 family are comfortable and fast. They are all capable of flying above 25,000 feet and 380mph, so it's quite capable jet prop.

@@RB747domme Well I am going on a Dash8-Q400 to go to Thunder Bay soon so I hope the claims by Bombardier are correct

Long term plans are probably trimming all routes that can't support the Q400. Like one single daily flight from YYZ-YZR with the -300. Seems like that'll drop to a few times a week instead of daily

Excellent. You make a very pertinent point. What the world of aviation desperately needs is a modern, low-emission, 30-40 seat regional aircraft. Please step up to the plate Bombardier, Embraer or someone new.

Nice plane! I only have been on the Q400. Q stands for quiet, but it is not :) On the wheelbay door it looks like bloodstains and stripes of a birdhit... Could use a rinse...

Thanks Alex for the vid. How easy/hard is it to get the emergency exit when booking basic economy? I'm 6'6" and I don't take that chance anymore and buy the extra leg room.

Not too hard, the exit row just costs a bit more depending on how long the flight is.

Nice report. Very interesting to see a passenger's perspective on flying the DH8-100. I've been flying these -100s (and the -300) for about three years now. Indeed, it will be interesting to see if a 37 pax (new gen) version of the -100 will be made. I certainly hope so. This is a perfect fit for many communities in Canada.
