Most Ocean ships wouldn’t be able to handle waves of the Great Lakes that the freighters push through with ease. Likewise for the freighters being able to handle ocean waves. In terms of sheer height and violence though, the Great Lakes can be worse than the oceans, so I’d say that if properly built to handle the frequencies of both ocean and lake waves, then lake freighters would be perfectly fine on the oceans. The Great Lakes are a great testing ground for ensuring the sturdiness and flexibility of a ship.
