Abandoned Greyhound Racetrack - Vintage Venue from the Past

- In today's exploration we drive through the mountains to visit a building from the past. Built in 1968, the racetrack originally opened for horse races. In the 1980's it was changed to the competitive phenom as a Greyhound racing venue. Greyhound racing was outlawed in 1995 so shortly after the grounds were used for concerts as well as car races/shows. Enjoy the quiet nature ambiance in this video as we go back in time to view what history remains in this little corner of the World. If you enjoy the video, a "thumbs up" lets me know right away, and Subscribe for more historical exploring videos in the future! Have a Good Day.

I worked there in 1967, lived in Mass. and traveled in the mornings to start at 7am. Worked for a horse trainner and did not see the Grand-stands often. Thanks for this piece of time.
That machine in the publicity room is called a switchboard. My aunt used to operate one for a heating fuel company here in Virginia. That was back in 50s, 60s and 70s. It’s nice to see young people appreciating the past. Y’all do a good job with your videos too.
Loved this video. I adopted 4 retired racing greyhounds & also volunteered with greyhound adoption. Racing greyhounds were not treated & cared for as well as the horses. Rescue groups brought a lot of bad awareness to the greyhound racing industry & it is a dying sport. Many tracks have closed since I was initially involved. So glad to see the decline in greyhound racing in the USA. Many tracks were forced to keep the dogs racing to keep their casinos operating even though tracks were losing money on the dogs.
Wow very cool Green Mountain Race track in Pownal VT, about 10 minutes or so from Mass border. They used to have big money bingo games a few times a year in the big open area where you came in. Events and things were still happening there like fairs and car shows up to about 10 years ago or so. Where you drove in by all the solar panels is where all the barns and kennel areas were from the racing days, there were several buildings there. Place used to draw pretty good crowds for races. Once Saratoga became the big horse destination kinda forced the harness racing out for bigger and better pastures so to speak. It was cool to see the operations areas where people weren’t allowed to see!
I just came across this video and really appreciate and enjoyed it because I first started going to this track in the early 70's when I was only 19. I did bet thoroughbreds and dogs here but my real passion were the harness horses. We would drive to Vermont from Troy, NY on treacherous Route 7 in the winter months during snow storms to bet on the harness races (thoroughbreds got the choice summer months). I spent many a frigid January night at this place hanging out and betting with my buddies on that very top floor which was called the clubhouse ("VIP area"). It was the only place that was warm. The winter winds would howl, the glass windows would freeze up and we could barely make out the horses from way up on top of this track. I visited this place one summer about five years ago and I did make it back up to that top floor one last time but I didn't explore the place like the two guys who made the video. That is why I am so grateful to DEF for this video. It was nostalgic and sad for me to watch. Thank You.
I miss watching the dogs there - used to stay at the old Ladd Brook Inn up the hill from the track - would get a program at the convenience store between the track and motel and sit by the pool and read it (along with the other guests) They had nite racing and Sunday matinees. Life was simpler back then...
Oh my God this is SO cool! I can’t believe anyone just left the place! That old machinery seriously has to be worth something to anyone who enjoys history!
The type writer is from 1963. I remember going to that track just about every weekend. Great memories.
I just found your channel about a week or so, ago and I've gotta tell you how much I enjoy everything I've watched ,
I also wanted to tell you that I really appreciate that you don't have to use a curse word every other word you say, because I have a 6 yr old grandson named Elijah that loves to watch your videos with me . . . .I also absolutely
enjoyed this video, thank you for all the info you shared about it. . . .and we really enjoy your narration, you have a nice, clear speaking voice . . . . Thanks again !!!!
Recently found your videos and I'm obsessed. Been watching so many. I especially loved this video on the dogtrack. I'm from Illinois and in my younger days I use to visit dogtracks while on vacation and here in Illinois and in Wisconsin.
I was reading up on the track you highlighted in this video and wanted to let you know the entire track including the stands burned to the ground on 9/17/20, just a few weeks ago. So glad you were able to document the track before the fire.
Your other videos are so interesting and well done. I enjoy the mansions that you find. Keep up the great work.
Looks like Green Mountain Race Track where we came up over the border from Massachusetts. My mom and dad had to leave us kids outside with an adult because it was illegal to take us inside. Horses when I was younger but greyhounds later. The flyer you held proves it so 🙂. My uncle raced his horses here too. Your horse only won when it was deemed your time to win-those of us in our 60’s/70’s know what that means lol
Had an abandoned horse track we used to hang out at on Long island. Was called Parr Meadows, and later Suffolk Meadows. It was just like this. Almost fell through the floor of the VIP area several times!😶
This place is on fire right now... happy you got this video when you did!
Like....literally?
@@deendrew36 yes... it was
Absolutely love your vids especially this one.....what a real big step back in time... as you said let's hope it stays that way.
Absolutely love the places you go and you take your time and don’t talk nonsense makes for awesome viewing and enjoyable not having someone say that’s a bed and a dresser there is a box and a curtain lol you are just very good and not needing to just say stuff thank you for that and all you do
Ok after watching more of this I see it is VT & I know where this is.the cars never raced it was an a place to show antique cars & they had rock concerts here.thanks for sharing & I miss my birth state :-)
Was originally a horse track, followed by greyhounds. The flea markets and concerts were after greyhound racing ended in 91
Awesome Exploration guys, thanks for sharing
Wow this is awesome. I have such great memories as a kid going here in the 1970's. We used to drive up from CT and make a weekend out of it with my parents and brother. So sad to see it in this condition but as you filmed through it I saw the beauty it once was. I'm 52 now and I always wondered what became of this place. Thank you for posting this.
Apparently it has burned down, judging by some of the comments.
a dollar admission price lol WoW I wouldn't have stepped on those floors with stuff growing on it lol
when my Grandma and Grandpa use to come visit us when I was a kid, my Grandpa use to pull me out of school to take me to the horse track with him. I'd pick all the grey horses to win lol He knew most of the jockeys so we'd get to go back to the stables. He'd talk to the jockeys, I'd pet and talk to the horses. Good time memories. Thanks for sharing :)
Love all of your videos. It’s pretty easy to figure out where most of these places are, this one caught on fire in 2020 and is considered a total loss. Sad, but what’s worse is the owner could have prevented this. Thanks for posting these videos, I’m totally addicted.
You talk about decay the way some people talk about love, lol. You’re doing a great job , keep it up!! And I think your channel is the best at exploring these places. I also really appreciate the music from the era in which you’re investigating that you add in. It gives it a nice touch. Love me some old timey music.
Nice work Im glad rnk all day introduced us to you! Thanks for sharing , you have a good eye for detail! So sad to think of dogs and horses racing, but especialy dogs!
I was born in the 70s..and a child of the 80s and life today is unrecognizable from back then...weve come a long way from a society standpoint..but not in a good way!!
Agreed
Absolutely agree 100% it's politics man Politics!
The one guy who disliked was the mugshot that owed money! Lol
It's like going back in time...like an abandoned museum..relics every where.wow.
Thank you for sharing this...Incredible. ..My cousin raced horses here. sooo cool
Stunning. I loved this video
Great record of the place. After the fire vids like this are all that's left.
Saw lollapalooza there in 94 I think.Soundgarden played black hole sun right after it rain and Chris Cornell said it was one of the most beautiful places they played. Way better condition back then.Too bad they never used it again for shows.
Another great video, my brother & 2 cousins were born in 1968 :-)
Nice work... keep it up!
Went there today, in three years the place has really deteriorated. Would’ve liked to see it in 2018
Cool place. Thanks for taking us through.
Wow..really cool explore. Great job. 👍👍👍👍👍😎
Great video like the grey hound race cool
Dope explore. Thanks guys!!
Thanks for uploading & enjoyed viewing. For you guys, this must of been like opening up a huge time capsule from the past. My father used to take me here during the late 1960's early 1970's mostly in the fall/late fall & some times early winter. It started out as a horse race track in 1963, went to harness racing the "sulkies" & finally literally went to the dogs before it was outlawed. We used to eat in the Track Kitchen on property. I remember they had good cheeseburgers & fries. The outside railroad tracks used to be Boston & Maine railroad & being a young guy that liked railroads there was always at least one long train( four diesels) going through during our time there. Do you know if the building is still there since you guys visited, since I haven't been by there in many years? Thanks.
Just drove past it, it's still there. Definitely looks worse for wear, though.
For those that may wonder, "cremee" is local speak for "Ice cream" lol
This place once houses lolapalooza in the 90s, and as stated by others, just recently, caught fire not long ago. It is scheduled for demolishing in the near future. ..
I was going to post that since the building he's in caught fire and burned up, some of the info about the facility would be cool to share since there's no way people can go look at it anymore. Thoroughbred and standardbred horse racing events were held until 1976, when thoroughbred racing was replaced by greyhound racing. One year later, standardbred racing was also discontinued, and the track exclusively featured greyhound racing until closing altogether in 1992 amid pressure from animal rights activists, who objected to greyhound racing as cruel (Vermont banned the sport in 1995.)[1]
Since closing as a racetrack, the site has hosted live events occasionally, including a rock concert in the Lollapalooza series in 1996, and antique car shows from 2005 to 2008,
Shortly after its closing, on May 7, 2004, the 144-acre (0.58 km2) property went on sale on eBay with a listed price of $2.5 million.[2] It was quickly bought by Progress Partners Ltd. in a $1 million deal with the previous track owner, John C. Tiegtens[3]
2018
Around January 2018, mortgage holder Bayview Loan Serving, LLC, of Coral Gables, Fla., filed a lawsuit in Bennington Superior Court Civil Division seeking to foreclose on the former Green Mountain Race Track property. The lawsuit named the current owner, Green Mountain Race Track, LLC, a former track ownership group; two other mortgage holders, and the entities involved with the solar array on the property that was installed in 2013. Bayview, the lending service seeks for foreclosure over the unpaid balance on a mortgage on the 144-acre track site off Route 7 that dates back to 2004. This very loan was modified in August 2009, that added some accumulated interest, after a similar foreclosure complaint that had been also filed by Bayview.[4]
The future for the track was unclear, but some proposed plans were believed to include a mix of energy-efficient companies, a farmers' market facility, and facilities to accommodate large events.
2020
During the night of September 16-17, 2020, the racetrack grandstand building was gutted by a fire.[5]
💯 smashed 👍🏻
Just find your channel and I’m obsessed!!!! Catching up all the videos and it’s addictive! Plus you’re cute 😊
@Marta Costa You're very beautiful.
Get in line sister, he's mine!!! lol I'm so obsessed as well. lol
Bro I just hit this place today, yet another place you have inspired me to get off my backside and go explore for the day. I've been in a lot of abandoned places but this basement has got to be one of the worst!! Disgustingly beautiful but just bad at the same time lol. Keep up the great work my friend, you are an inspiration to the rest of us
The plywood panels on all of the walls were disgusting, but the mold and fungus on all those panels was shocking, the place was decaying before their very eyes.
This place is amazing, cant believe there is still so much left behind and not destroyed. Thanks for sharing 👊
they are boarding up windows now and eventually the buildings going to be knocked down cus teens clearly can't stay out of the building even though there all on camera and its a no trespassing zone no one is supposed to go past the huge bricks. I know this cus I don't live that far from the race track, but hopefully, they make something useful out of the property.
@@makenzienichole3169 some of the comments said it recently burned down.
You did an amazing job on this exploration
Thanks for the tour.
🔥🔥 UPDATE TO THIS LOCATION 🔥🔥
This place has BURNED DOWN since this filming. There was a Suspicious fire that destroyed this former Racetrack. In September of 2020, the grandstand of the racetrack is now considered a total loss. A fire that was started inside the building quickly spread throughout the entire facility. It's completely boarded up and set to be raised in the near future and is extremely unstable. Good thing you got there when you did to record this historic location. I never understood vandalism and arson, I don't get the point of destroying other ppl's property.
The grandstand is probably the best preserved part of the damn place! Why would they want to destroy that instead of the food courts which are TOAST
So dumb. I paused on one part of the video because I noticed right away the liquor ID sign said VT, ive always lived here my whole life and recognized the area immediately. Such a shame I can't go explore because it's cool to burn shit 😒
Yet again a great video and a very cool spot. Makes me wanna go out and urbex again. Its been a minutte 😀
This is brilliant. Nice explore there 👍
Came back to watch this video. I visited this place numerous times during 2020 in the pandemic, and absolutely loved exploring everything and seeing the bits of history just left behind. I wanted to photograph everything to make sure that it was all preserved in one way, albeit digitally. It made me somber and reminded me of the lovely times once had in this place, seeing all the tickets downstairs as well as the darkroom with hundreds of unprocessed photos, and some of the offices which still had paperwork in them and unused tickets.
The condition that the track was in in this video was fantastic in comparison to what I saw when I was there. Most of the windows had been blown out in the front, tons of spray paint. The phone shown at 11:56 in the video was spray painted over completely against a mural, which although cool, I wish it had been left alone. Many other portions of the building were also spray painted over with poor tags, the usual dick, and just random nonsense. I'm all for cool spray paint murals in these places, but this was done in super poor taste.
For anyone curious, the building burnt down. Over the years Green Mountain suffered from lots of kids breaking in and destroying things. Lots of vandals, kids going there to smoke, people driving ATV's in it, etc. Unfortunately, in September 2020 the building burned down in an arson. Someone set it ablaze, as nothing else would've caused it to catch. The entire structure has basically been destroyed. Everything in the basement apparently had been ransacked, so people presume someone stole a lot of the valuable items (old signs, cool photographs, there were some unopened new mugs and cups down there) and then lit it up. I'm hoping to visit again sometime in the next week, just to see the changes that've happened and get one last glimpse at the place before it's inevitably torn down for being a hazard.
If you'd like to see some of the photos I took, you can check my Instagram @vey1ia and scroll to the earlier posts. Not trying to advertise or anything, just trying to showcase some of the beautiful spots I got the opportunity to photograph so others can see it and reminisce in the old structure's history. Cheers for making this video for others to see and immortalize it's history.
Recently discovered your channel and I'm loving it! I like that you're more interested in respecting a places past and remarking on the architecture rather then being some obnoxious trespasser. I'm glad tracks like these are closed and run down. I'm the parent of an adopted ex-racing greyhound and these places do nothing but abuse these amazing dogs for profit. Good riddance to these tracks.
Agreed...so glad horse/dog racing is losing popularity.
Very cool video. I love that old decor. It reminds me of Mad Men.
Sorta the same era.
Wow this is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm of an age when I went to these tracks when they were fully operational. I have one behind my house, that I worked at for many years. They are all going the way of the dinosaur in this country, except for the big tracks. I wish you would have gone out to the kennels and the old stables, they are really interesting.
Sad....but interesting, I guess.
Awesome video! We went there a few years ago and the concrete barrier was blocking entry for cars. Heard dogs barking close by too. Only got so far. Creepy place but i may try again to see for myself.
wikipedia says the building was destroyed in a fire last night? added the video to watch later a couple of days ago...that is a strange coincidence.
Such a bummer, I was here 2 days ago 4/24/21 and the entire back building was destroyed by arson. I did get some amazing shots and video with my drone. Hopefully I can make it back before this place completely collapses.
This track was recently (9/12/2020) torched by someone. The fire burned for about 15 hours and 12 local fire companies attended the fire. Only the steel and concrete frame of the building are left.
Wow...I wonder why? Just vandals or maybe an insurance job?
Its actually not as bad as you would think,,,we just made a video there AFTER the fire... the grand stands are FINE, lol
It’s not quite that bad, the grandstands are practically untouched
Очень интересное видео!👍👍👍👍
You are the best ❤❤❤❤
Great video!!!
My grandma loved the dog track because they had the biggest shrimp she’s ever seen on the buffet. She still talks about it.
Looks like the Green Mountain race track in Pownell Vermont. Was there many times growing up. Plans were a casino to be there. But ..... nope
When I saw Vermont on the bar I remembered going here with my Grandfather in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It was dog racing back then. He used the racing form to teach me algebra.
September 17, 2020. The racetrack went up in flames late last night.
@Upstate Media - For Real?!?! 😧
What an awesome place😉
I live literally right next to this place, and last night it caught on fire😓it was bad
oh wow really?? thats sad,, do you have/know of any pictures or footage?
@@mavohq yes, well the track used to be made for racing dogs and horses. I just went in there before it burned down and there was water dripping everywhere and it was full of shattered glass I have photos aswell but dont know how to show them on here
@@mavohq We are uploading a video of what it all looks like after the massive fire. Check it out
amazing video
That’s something I didn’t know that horse tracks used to dogs racing u learned something new everyday
It was a horse racing track and THEN it was dogs.
It`s my gues that the "strange machine" at 20.10 was the control for the so called electric hare used for the dogs to chase. Great vid by the way.
Thanks for the info! Glad you enjoyed
This place is absolutely awesome. So many rooms, that held so many functions! Great Job!
Great explore
Reminds me of the old, and now demolished, Phoenix trotting park.
Turf Paradise . 😁
Amazing work
Sept 2020 fire...what a shame
I use to go there with my Dad when it was dog racing. Blast from the past. Thanks. Unfortunately it caught fire last and probably isn't much left.
Woulda loved to try some of those Cremee Cigarettes and Popcorn back in the day. 🤣🤣
😂
Very cool.
Cool
Personally I'd like to have the brass bladed fan from the top shelf of the Admissions Department office. Cool antique.
It's an intercom/loud speaker switchboard for communications with the different offices and as I understand it also could be used for announcements on that model
Sad news. This morning the grandstands of the racetrack have caught fire. Very bad fire so this footage is considered rare now.
To be honest most of the building was badly burned you are right. But we are uploading a video of what it looks like inside after the fire and all the grand stands are fine!
27:54 man that was really cool
I use to run the photo finish for a few years. Inside the Stewards room that crazy machine is what powered the fake rabbit for the dogs to chase. I would slide depending on the power needed ti keep the rabbit ahead of the dogs
Thanks for another great video where is this located at?
It’s in pownal Vermont, it’s DESTROYED now tho, doesn’t even look similar to what you see in the video. It’s really gutted and destroyed
You really love vintage stuff I wonder if you re a fan of recolecting old stuff in your house 😀
Absoultely
Dude sick video I just made my exploring video there
Great video one the best Urban Explorers on UA-cam no arrogance and a know it all attitude unlike the Proper people lol let's face it to have that name stinks or arrogance and they are not in top 10!
This racetrack cought on fire last night. Looks like it was a good sized fire. All that crap in there probably didn't help.
hey guys i saw your cool video about that grayhood racetrack i wanted you to know people have been getting in there and yesterday 9/18/2020 many fire depts was called there for a magor fire the place was totally destoryed by fire damn people cant leave things alone they aleays have detrpy things i know back in the errly 2000s they used it to play bingo in there lots of people use to go there even busses to play bingo but anyway wanted you to know that happened
Green mountain racetrack
STEVEN MIRABILE Yup! I remember it well as a child.
Hey the bubbles in the office was old shaving cream there was an old can of edge shaving cream sitting right in front of u and some one must of sprayed it lol a long time ago but that’s what that was
I want to go to there!!..
Guys if you look up the # on that telephone operator system you found- SD65658-01...it will show you the picture of it and the schematics.
Hey babe! 😎
Emm Mariee watch it bro
We were just there and flew FPV drones inside. Will be uploading the videos soon.
WoW!!!
Its amazing that a place like that can be left to decay, somebody must still own it ? Maybe a bank ?
I expect it would cost an absolute fortune to bring it back into use.
Why is it that it all just sits there, abandoned. Someone has to own the land. Surprised no one has done anything with it.
@@GinTalking apparently it burned down this year. Thanks, 2020!
Closed the fridge dooming it to smell like feet forever...... 🤣🤣🤣
The foam bubbles in the ashtray on the desk of the basement Admissions Department was shaving cream, all dried out and crunchy. I experimented with that stuff when I was little, so I know what happens to it after a while. The EDGE Shaving gel can was right in front of your camera. How come you guys didn't get sick from breathing in all that fungus and decay? You need car painter's filtered masks!
You guy's should wear gloves, and bring a trash picker. Beautiful view!
this racetrack was built in 1963 (not 68) and was burned down in 2020.. I quote: "During the night of September 16-17, 2020,
the racetrack grandstand building was gutted by a fire." for me its definitely arson because the previous owner of this racetrack
was broke.. it must be a big coincidence that there is a fire there...
