I'm so thankful for this channel. I don't know why I've attached to Gatlinburg after my son died this year, but I have. And obviously, I can't be there all the time. I watch and feel happy seeing what is happening in each video. Thank you.
Ryan… it is unfortunate that the big red oak tree had to come down. But trees have do have a limited life span. In the case of the red oak tree some have existed for up to 500 years. Time ages everything and everyone. When trees are located in populated areas and become diseased or are decaying from age, they have to be brought down before they fall on someone. The National Park Service is doing important work in the Smoky Mountains National Park with the prescribed burn program. In this case at Cades Cove they are burning off approximately 1,200 acres to safely reduce fire fuels, restore meadows habitat, and maintain the historic landscape of Cades Cove.
That's cool that they had people available to answer those "burning questions". Here in south Florida where we have a big state park nearby it's not uncommon to see controlled burns as well, and being Florida, once the fires are out the plants tend to all grow back fairly quickly! Anyhow, thanks for another enjoyable video Ryan!
I hate to see the tree gone, it was beautiful. I do understand keeping people and buildings safe. Thanks for the trip to Cades Cove, I never get tired of going there!
I hate losing big trees too, but I understand with our weather it could cause a lot of damage if it fell during wind or snow storm. Glad they are being proactive for safety. I know a fella in St Louis who was killed when a tree branch fell on him after a storm.
My favorite tree in cades cove for about 25 years had been hit by lightning, about 18 years ago. I was so saad. Glad i got lots of pics from all those years
We drove Cades Cove in November and the flume was very leaky but the water had iced over and the area was beautiful! Coming from PA again this June with grand kids. So looking forward to the trip and you help us by showing the old and the new.
So very sad to see the tree gone. I believe it was a red oak, so we always called it Big Red. I always take a picture of it and the last time we were there, noticed that it wasn’t looking so good. It does look totally different now. Sad day, but thank you for sharing😢
As you know, I really do enjoy watching your outings in the park; most especially in Cades Cove☺️. Our favorite place in that wonderful park; we spend many of our vacation days there in search of a look at those symbols of The Smokies; really special for us to see them☺️. Thanks Ryan🙏🏻. 🫎
Can't get enough of Cades Cove. It will always be a special place. It's good to see they use controlled burns to maintain the pastures and keep it beautiful.
We were just there today! My husband and I love watching your videos! We have been telling our family what is getting built and happening soon, and they ask “how do we even know that?” lol! Great videos!
Enjoyed the video. I live in the foothills, just a few miles out, visiting multiple times each season. Be going up tomorrow. Thanks for sharing…from an OLD man, just a little ways away.
They should have left about a ten or twelve foot stump so someone could carve a bear or something... great video 👍.. love the cove.. would like to bike it some day 😊
Great video. Love seeing the animals in Cades Cove. The tree was beautiful at the Cafe, but people used to say don't park under that tree. Safe travels and God bless.
I know the person that was in charge of cutting the tree down. The family that owns Old Mill is going to do something with the trunk. Maybe a carving? They haven't said
I had some tree work done & one taken down & it was cut into sections, too. The funny thing is, the guy who had to climb up the tree to do the sawing came to work every day, inebriated, or so his boss told me 😅. But he was good doing the job.. And my yard was cleaned up good after the work was finished.
Gonna miss that big monster...I can remember looking up into the upper branches as a kid MANY yearsago...we'd visit the Mill and the Cat house and now as the adult I've gone into the book store a few times and that beast was alwaysa reminder...big beautiful tree...sad to see it gone but totally understand ❤

Awesome Trip. Are you still a firefighter and where, department? I was a Captain, Firefighter, Paramedic outside Cincinnati Ohio for many years until retirement almost 8 years ago.
@ Gotcha. I used to visit the Smokey’s a ton about 10 years ago and farther back. I was into backpacking and would do backcountry trips a few times a year usually with fellow firefighters. I live near Cincinnati Ohio. I used to know the area like the back of my hands. I enjoy watching your videos to see what is new. I haven’t been there since a year before the major fires there. I would love to have an electric bike to ride in Cades Cove. Today was a great day. Having the Cove practically all to yourself must have felt a amazing. Sad no bear to see.
