Hola! I remember on the last video, you mentioned that the next one would feature lots of Roman architecture and history, and you were definitely correct. What an amazing place.
This time, I did not watch it with a cup of coffee after my dinner, I watched it Sunday night sitting in my car. 😆 Well, actually, I was camping on Cape Cod, so I got comfortable and watched it on my phone. I am no longer in Maine, and although the rental market in Boston is very expensive, I was finally able to get an apartment. So, back to Boston later this week. (but I'm still not planning any new videos 😕)
Wow, I've never heard of this city, but after watching it, I almost feel like it's as good as visiting Rome itself. The bridge at the beginning is such a classic Roman bridge, and the video there of the river was beautiful. The river was so calm, it looked like a mirror reflecting the bridge and the landscape. Very nice. As you were walking across the bridge, I started to hear an odd sound - what the heck is that? The boxers! 😅 You never know what you'll see!
You can definitely see the ancient age in the walls. 25 BC is a long time ago.😀 Trajan's Arch at 8:00 was very impressive. I was wondering who was the guy in the statue at 10:49? Beautiful building there. The sound of the kids playing as you were walking here really added a nice element to the video. In fact, I really enjoyed hearing all the voices of people during the video.
The Plaza de Espana was beautiful. I loved the palm trees there. They reminded me of someplace I used to live. 😉 At 15:00, the shot of the Santa Maria cathedral (?) was great. Such a brilliant, blue sky. I noticed at some point in the video, it was 22 degrees out. That's 72 in this part of the world, which is great weather! Great portico at 15:27 and the cafes there made me want to sit down and have lunch. 😄
At 22:25, all I could think was - hope they built that arch well, because if one of those big stones comes loose, it's all over! 😅
The Temple of Diana was a real wow! And the Roman Theater at 40:00. Wow. I really never expected to see that kind of thing in Spain. I always think of Italy and Greece when I think about that ancient architecture and history. Beautifully preserved too. That was just amazing.
I noticed at the end the M in Merida was in the shape of the arches. Nice touch! Great video. Really enjoyed it. Take Care.

Hola! Como estas? As you have seen, I didn't lie to you in my previous message 😄 In reality, when I wrote you the message I was already visiting Merida, so it was very easy to get it right.
Oh, I envy you! Now that the weather is starting to get nice, you can't imagine how much I want to enjoy the sea and the coast again (fortunately I have less time left to return to Costa Blanca although I would have no problem spending some time in Cape Cod as well 😄) I hope you are enjoying your stay there and the weather is being warm.
I'm not surprised by what you say about the rental market in Boston. Being one of the most important cities in the United States, it must also be one of the most expensive, am I right? So congratulations! I hope you do well in your new home 😊
It is logical that you have never heard of Merida (perhaps the Mexican city of Merida is more familiar to you, which is much larger and its name comes from this city) because the region where Merida is located, called Extremadura, is undoubtedly the most underrated in Spain, even though in my opinion it has some of the most beautiful cities and towns in the country. That is why Merida is a city that is not very well known to tourists today, although during the Roman Empire it was one of the most important in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). As a curious movie fact, the main character of the movie Gladiator, played by Russell Crowe, is from this region.
My initial intention was to start the tour on the other side of the bridge, but it is very long, measuring about 800 meters, and it would take me too long to cross it. So finally I started on the middle of the bridge so that the river could be seen well. This river is one of the most important in Spain, it is called the Guadiana River, and in some sections it acts as a natural border between Spain and Portugal, something like the Rio Bravo between the US and Mexico.
I think I thought exactly the same as you when I saw that couple of boxers 😆 I was seeing someone doing something similar to a choreography from a distance but as I got closer I was surprised that it was a boxing training session in the middle of the Roman bridge! 😵
I also had no idea who the guy with the sculpture was, so I have looked him up and he was an archaeologist who cataloged the Roman pieces that were found in the city, the building where the sculpture is located is a museum with archaeological pieces of Visigothic art, which was the civilization that settled in Spain after the Romans. Building on the other side of the street is a school and it seems that the children were at recess at that time. You are right, my last tours have a very quiet atmosphere and you can barely hear the sound of people. So it's quite a novelty!
I don't know what place you may be referring to 😆😉 Joke aside, I think that Santa Barbara have a similar touch in its architecture to these southern Spanish cities, am I right? I agree with what you say about the cafes in that portico, they made you want to stop filming and sit down and enjoy the atmosphere of the square having a coffee.
Fortunately weather was amazing during my stay there, in fact the day I filmed this tour I think it was the least hot of all. I was also lucky because the sky had beautiful clouds that gave the tour a more photogenic aspect.
You mean this arc 17:54, right? Now that you say it and I look at it more closely, I would think twice before staying under it for a long time 😄 it's surprising that they stayed like that for so long!
You are right, when someone thinks about this type of buildings the first thing that comes to mind is Italy or Greece but really this type of buildings can be found in many countries, especially those located in the Mediterranean Sea. Most of them have been lost or are in a very dilapidated state, fortunately both the temple of Diana and especially the theater are very well preserved.
Great observation! 👍 That M for Merida is a representation of the city's Roman aqueduct (I have not included it in this tour because it is a little far from the old town) although you can take a look at it in the last short that I have uploaded. By the way, on my next tour I will focus more on the venue where the theater and amphitheater are located since on this tour I have shown them quickly. I hope you enjoy it too! (and I also hope you can already enjoy it in your new home 😉) See you then! Thank you very much as always! Take care

@@WalkingSpain Ah, the Gladiator aka The Spainard. I do like that movie and watch it whenever I see it on TV. It was a bit hard to follow the first time I saw it, but after seeing it a few times, it makes much more sense.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of the amphitheater in the next video. It was amazing. Maybe the Spainard watched a few plays there before he went off to war for the Empire! 😅
Actually, the weather last week while I was on Cape Cod was horrible. It was mostly rainy, windy and cold. Felt more like March, and I didn't get to sit on the beach once. But that's okay, it was nice to be back in my home state, and it's like summer now. 😀 Did I read it correctly - you are heading back to the Costa Blanca again this summer? Nice. Once I get settled in my new apartment, I think I'll take a few weekend trips to Cape Cod. I do love the beach.
      Take care.
