    When my grandfather, who lived on his farm, turned 80 years old, we gave him an Australian Shepherd tricolor female puppy. She was the best farm dog. Her name was "Grandpa's Last Chance" or Chance for short. We knew it would be his last chance to raise a puppy. They were best buds. As my grandpa aged, Chance followed him everywhere as he did his chores. My grandpa would go into the hen house to collect the eggs and Chance would sit on the top step waiting patiently for him to come out. When my grandpa went to care for the cows, Chance kept an eye on the cows. We knew where to find my grandpa based on where Chance would be sitting. He trained her to remove the tomato hornworms from his tomato plants. Chance would remove the hornworms without hurting the plants! They are incredibly smart dogs. My grandpa lived to be 92. Chance died just months after my grandpa.

    When I think of livestock guardian dogs, I think of Great Pyrenees, Anatolian, Akbash. When I think of Australian Shepherds, I think of herding dogs. Good luck with your puppy. If the herding instinct is strong, don't be surprised if she tries to herd the animals or the children. Herding dogs have a tendency to be nippy. But, if the herding instinct isn't strong, this might not be a problem. The puppy is really cute.
    I have a Great Pyrenees mix who works as a family guardian. He is great.

      Our border collie would herd the kids and nip at their heels and then herd the chickens into a corner of the yard and not let them out. That herding instinct is strong. I think a GP or GP/Anatolian mix would be better on a farm where it would live with the animals outside year round. And GP's are extremely gentle with kids. My friend has 2 on her farm in West Texas. They live with the goats/horses and chickens and she has not lost anything to predators yet.

      Exactly. A shepherd is a herding breed, not a protection breed. They really need to put in some more thought before going for a breed... A AS really isn't gonna take on a pack of cyotes to protect their lifestock if necessary... Even if he would, he just would be too small and not strong enough to handle this job. And wasn't that one of the big reasons to get a farm dog?

      Yup they used to be a mix of guard and herd I was told but they bred that out to be strict herding breeds. they are great family and herding pets. but I am very careful of who I get a pup from. To many back yard breeders that breed the same dog to many times. I am now looking into getting my first corgi. and it took me about a year of searching to find a breeder I liked who does all the health checks to make sure her dogs pass on healthy traits. and only breeds once a year to once every other year and her female only ever has 2 to 3 litters in there life then they get fixed and are her family pets. last aussie I had didn't do my research and the guy had bred the mom so much she was sickly. and her puppy I got had severe health problems when she grew up. loved her but she was such a sick pup. cause the guy didn't do his research or the right tests

    i noticed you kept calling your aussie a lgd (livestock guardian dog) aussie's are actually a herding breed they are bred with the purpose to herd, corral, and bite at livestock to get them to go which ever direction. its important to know the difference and know how to train different breeds to do different task, otherwise one could set their puppy up for failure without even realizing.

      I had a border collie that would guard rabbits, mostly from cats, but this came naturally to him I would not have bought a herding dog expecting that reaction, it was a good bonus.

    • @demondevongirl666
      @demondevongirl666 4 роки тому +2

      Yep like Justin Rhodes. With both puppets did 0 research one to be a guard Aussie but it's a herding breed that nips. It nipped and got rehomed. They now have a very over priced crappy puppymill bred mutt who will probably hurt a critter too or become coyote show or just get so so so damn pelted it can't shit. They got hair sheep because they don't like brushing or shearing, but yet they get a mutt that has the same or more grooming need and frecrently than a poodle because there coa5 is often such crap for not collecting debris and matting quick.
      Your pup at least looks better bred, so maybe it is and maybe you did more reasurch....I hope

    • @sarahdalus5059
      @sarahdalus5059 4 роки тому +8

      Agree with you. Obviously, it could still work out, but my aussie who herds would never guard the animals. He'd be more likely to chase them around because of his instincts.

    Great Pyrs are SO GOOD with children.
    Even babies, especially babies. And there are so many in need of rescue through different organizations. They are true guardian dogs and will guard your animals and family with their lives against predators.
    I am hesitant to address my concern aloud about the Aussie, lest I seem like just another person saying the same thing. And also I can't keep this in.
    Aussies have innate instincts to herd. They will do it to your livestock, they will do it to you, they will do it to your kids. They herd by corraling and nipping.
    YES they are very intelligent. But they are also instinctual animals that have been bred to perform this task.

      @@whitehouseonthehill I really love your guy's channel, but I thought I would just put in my opinion on Joey: I love her! she s such a cute little bundle of joy, but I'm not to sure if you guys realize that Aussies are herding dogs, not livestock guardian dogs. This leads them to be not so good with poultry in my experience, constantly trying to herd them by nipping at their feet. This can lead to some unfortunate acedents, and I would never want you guys to suffer a personal or financial loss. I can't help being a bit disappointed that you have assumed what many have, that large intimidating looking dogs may be rough or aggressive with the little ones, when in reality dogs such as the great Pyrenees make great family dogs. Although the Great Pyrenees may seem a liability, they tend to be very hard to excite unless there is danger, leading them to sleeping most of the day and being very chill dogs. This isn't just biost, multiple sources including the AKC have described them as gentle giants. Never the less, I still love your guys's channel and still love your wholesome moments, have a great day! P.s. Are you guys even going to read this? P.P.S. I think you guys should get something herd-able, like goats, if you are going to get a shepherd!

      Panavarr 00 what I meant by mini Australian Shepard is her genetics are smaller than an average Australian Shepard. We say she is a mini Australian Shepherd to explain her size better because she’s rather small. I understand your confusion with that.

    • @jupekai4601
      @jupekai4601 4 роки тому +1

      @@SierraSparks2048 still no such thing. Breed standards have a weight and size range for a reason but even then dogs can be smaller of larger than the standard, so you have absolutely no need to call her that as it will come across to many that tou are trying to pass her off as something she isn't. Especially as there are people who cross breed Aussies to smaller breeds and then sell the mixed breed pups as "Mini Aussies" so you are opening up your self to being checked for that (as I just did).
      If she is a purebred Aussie but is just small for the breed, then say thatnot labelling her as something she isn't.

    Everyday they are around the baby chicks and told, No or Be Nice as well as to pigs or any other animals.
    BY the time the newest animal is a couple months old one can tell our dogs find that animal as a pleasant new
    addition or the new normal white noise of the property.
    Most never have to be told after the first animal arrived;)

      That's awful :-/ my last Aussie girl was protective too, nipped my partner on the butt a couple times when she thought he was playing too rough with the kids. Even my mom got a little nip for running through the house, but nothing serious. We had an elderly gentleman try to get in our yard (without permission) last week and I'm glad I stopped him because our current male is super sweet but jumps and could have bowled him over - and we would likely have gotten sued. It's sad how people think they can try to make money off of a dog looking out for their owner.

I think because they were born under her watch they were "hers" in her mind. But we always kept an eye out when other kids were over because we didn't want her to get too protective and accidentally nip one. We got lucky though, she always stuck to adults, lol.

      I keep a sheepdog breed that is extremely nippy and barky with livestock and also protective, but they never nipped me or other people. I think it just comes down to training. Make them obedient and don't let them go to anyone without supervision. At times I had 3 sheepdogs at once and they never nipped anyone besides sheep. I always keep them in check, if someone comes near, I leash them or make them heel/stay. I think most working sheepdog types are one person dogs and don't need to be everyone's puppies and the life of the party or huge family dogs. Best keep them a bit more private.

    Wow, you guys are really firing on all cylinders- cow, soon-to-be calf, piglets, new birds, fish and now a new dog! Congratulations guys, I hope he brings you many years of joy. We will be getting our new pup next month. The mother-in-law has a stray dog that decided to leave her litter with her, so it's be a real chore to find them all homes. We think ours is a Tennessee Brindle mix, and while we always had our heart set on a Australian Shepard, this little guy is so lovely and needs a good home!

    👍👍. I stumbled on this video and all I can say is WOW. Your editing and photography is perfect along with choice of music. We had an Aussie for 4 years when had to leave her behind cus of a move. Poppa became her best friend and follower so everyone knew where Poppa was at. We moved back years later but could not separate them. A great protector and herding dog and great family dog. Poppa got sick and Angie never left his side. She became like a service dog out of love always getting what he needed. Sadly Poppa died and that dog refused to leave his side moaning when buried. A few months later Angie climbed on his bed and died. We know it was a broken heart cus these dogs have immense compassion. Good choice for your family and they are easy to train. Certain he will latch onto one person more but for a “forever” dog it’s a perfect choice cus they’ll fight for their family. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

      In Denmark we have flattened the curve and is mid way through reopening.... I started working 2 weeks ago ( as a hairstylist) at the same time they sent smaller kids back to school and care, and other small business were able to start working again - and there has barely been a bump in hospitalizations....
      we have had a bump in Infected, but that came along with a huge bump in testing, so that makes sense....
      We have only had around 500 deaths country wide during the pandemic until now, and there hasn’t been any type of ‘shelter at home’ order...
      Social distancing when out and about, and hand washing...
      There is a way to do this without going overboard....
