As an animal person, I am glad you are teaching your children about life and death. I know it can be traumatizing for a young child, but you are doing such an amazing job with both kids and animals. It is okay to mourn those lost, it is okay to break down and cry. Never be ashamed, and let your kids know that as well. Much love to your family and farm!
In the part when the kids says "Bye Lurkey" My heart just broke, and i start to cry, i love the animals and My favorites are the birds (Turkeys, chikens, ducks and all of them) and that... That is so damn sad!!
The worst part about having animals is that your animals always have to die and you're not always ready for it
I have my favorite chicken, his name is zebra, but the rest of the other chickens are nice and all but there food for me but not my zebra chicken😍😍💗🥺
Yeah we lost a chicken this week on Monday. She was acting weird a few weeks ago and we brought her in and checked on her and fed her last charms and pet and preened her. And then I found out she died Tuesday night. My sister didn't see her because she was obviously laying down dead outside so her body stayed outside in the cold all night. I found her by the chicken door underneath the ramp we put for them to get in. I let the chickens out in the morning. I'm still in highschool so we were running late for school. I had to bring her dead body and toss it in my dads garage so the others wouldn't pack at her and the neighbors dogs and cats wouldn't eat her. That was a really rough day. I mean highschool is bad enough for me having autism and adhd and a anxiety disorder but dealing with loosing a pet we loved is always hard. My 17th birthday is in nine days. We lost another chicken Henny two years ago three days after my birthday
Poor burning molly
@@turkeygirl12 Yeah. It breaks my heart knowing that. My pets deaths are always unexpected, and makes it harder that way.

Yes. Tears here because of the little ones.
I about teared up just seeing the older brother help the younger brother with the heavy stone for Lurkey. The goodbye was so heart breaking & sweet. They're such good boys. I hope they have another special friendly turkey make their way to them. It's not the same but it can help to have another animal around. After I lost my very special cat Maxwell Max every single cat in the house wouldn't leave me alone.
@@Nirrrina
Yes! I felt that too; they are such good boys.
I'm sorry about your kitty. I know that pain well too. Some animals become family members, and our love for them is the same.
💛
@@gothic_oma Thank you. There was just about Max. He was my best friend. Where as my current kitties are my babies because I've had them from birth. They're mama raised them near me once they could move around. They're also more spoiled than any previous cats. I actually named my boy cat Micah Maxwell. His pretty sister is Harlequin Shayla Flour. Also named after my cousins cat Shayla & later my older cat Flour. Other than color she looks just Flour.
Yeah I probably shouldn't be allowed to name my cats alone or this happens.😏 It also took me several months to find the right name for Micah. My cousins named Harley. I just added the extra parts.
Max was actually suggested by my mom. Along with Flour.
At least my dog came with a name since he was originally my sister's kids dog.
At least this time insured that they were well socialized. Unlike my grumpy Max. He finally gave in & allowed the kittens to cuddle up to him though. Eventually.
That was actually really sad i cried a little on the inside much love to them from romania

I am still teary over this video. Brought up old memories. When I was a kid my Dad had a beautiful Big white rooster 🐓 I loved him, he was nice a let me pet him. My Dad brought home this tiny rooster that got out of its cage and killed my rooster first thing. I was heartbroken but the really bad part is my sMom cooked him...I refused to eat, got grounded, didn't care. Never loved another rooster (til I met my husband but that's another story)
what a story. i can only imagine the aches and mind ptsd it gave. animal bonds, spiritual connections are real
That happened to me but with a bunny
If you ever consider a different type of fencing, I use a tall looped metal lawn border that interlocks together. It separates into panels that are easy to move around and rearrange.
I’m so sorry this happened to me once... my turkey ran tome to play but I ran away didn’t knowing it was chasing me and he got tied in a fence himself and died. Rip Tommy

@@aleveraj I raised a baby goat that it's momma had abandoned when I was little and then one time he went missing and when I asked my parents where he was my dad said "he's on your plate." I was soo mortified and distressed I started screaming and crying. To this day, I don't eat goats. I also raised chickens as a kid and although I do eat chicken, the pieces I eat can't have bones in them and I can't eat it on its own. The taste of chicken is really gross to me.
@@myfairytalelife3 Yup, one needs to be really careful while explaining the meat process to kids.
I don’t eat any animal, regardless of whether or not it has a name.
i would suggest you change into a different type of fencing/ maybe those mettal movable bars that you only thread a metal rod on the sides to connect them/ usually used for sheep and cow farms. it will remove the possibility of them getting tangled ever.
They should do a wooden fence
@@JustfootyeditzTM wooden fences are pretty easy to build, but they’re not that mobile.
@@shadowlibrarian400 bro really replied to my reply from a year ago
When I have a wound on one of my birds that I'm afraid the others will peck at I use a spray called blu-kote. There are a couple of other brands of it too. But it is a liquid bandage that turns the wound blue and the other birds will normally leave it alone afterwards, so I don't have to separate them.
Like so they can see and use it then!!
That's why they used to use "poultry peepers" ... literally little red 'glasses' they put on the chickens or other poultry to ward off this pecking behaviour. With the glasses, everything is red, not just the blood.
Blue coat works for all wind on live stock good choice

Edit: if anyone else sees this, no she died most likely because I left that Friday for my birthday and she died Monday. She had never been without me for even a day before we met. I loved her so much, still do.
Omg wait I had a chicken who also passed away named Loretta and when I was in the coop she should also follow me around everywhere. She was the best
I only just found this channel via the Bamboo playlist. I really have to say that I continued to watch due to the lovely approach you take with your family and animals. I love that your children are being brought up and included in the realities of life, and in this video's case, death. Everything is handled so fairly, so gently. Thank you for sharing this!
You could try using wire with smaller holes to help with your animals getting tangled :0
We currently use welded wire fence for our chickens but you could also try hardwire cloth to prevent predators from getting out plus the chickens/ turkeys won’t be able to push through it and get stuck keeping them same c:
I’m sorry about your turkey and cat tho loosing any pet is tough but I’m glad you guys do everything you can for them ❤️
I am so sorry you lost Lurkey. She was an amazing Turkey. The pain of losing an animal we love is something that comes with loving them. Hugs for all of you. I hope there are happier things for everyone in the next video

"Edit" R.I.P Lurky we loved her to poor lurky
Yup that fence is not recommended for these birds the fence square holes is enough to fit the turkey's head which can estrangle them as did happened to lurkey.. i suggest the should replace it with another fence with smaller holes
Beautiful family showing that they really do care about these animals and aren’t there for just food.
Honestly really want the best wishes for this family ❤️
Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s really a shame when things that are supposed to protect your animals turn deadly...😔
I know this is late, but it might be better to get a wire fence. Wire is less likely to wrap around them and if they try to climb it, they won't get so tangled.
Chicken wire would probably work best. It is flexible enough to be moved around but sturdy enough to withstand birds and other critter.
Yea.. The poultry netting isn't to friendly on poultry at all.. This seems to happen a lot with that moveable netting.
@@scottbaker3659 Sadly. The only time I've seen it work was when it was stretched and connected permanently connected to a coop. Pretty much the person made it so it had little to no give.
Chicken wire is ok to keep hens in but not predator protection x
@@mmpoggs2033 I don't know, I've seen some pretty solid chicken cooks made of Chicken wire. Besides, chicken wire is a LOT better at protecting the birds than the netting.
Thats what we use

Yeah he needs better pens. Something that can also keep predators out. Amazed no bird of prey or foxes gotten to them.
@@susangardiner I always use metal fabric. You can zip tie it to folding fences, like those sold on Amazon. Lasts forever, you can move it and stake it anywhere, and raccoons etc cant stick their teeth through it.
I've always thought that. It's too thin, flimsy and too big spaced between each square
You, your wife and children all gave so much love kindness and caring during the time
Lurkey was with you and your family and her turkey family that though her life ended so sadly I know she felt truly loved and cared for. That's the beauty of what you and your family are doing every day and night caring for all the animals. I can see how well the animals are being cared for. It's even more sad as Lurkey was a viewers gift. 💔I hope they're not too sad watching this. Lurkey had a great life on the farm and was allowed to have some babies.
It looks like something really scared those two to run into a fence like that. Maybe the storm cracked something which caught them by surprise. Also unfortunately birds have a very weak circulatory system and their necks are so fragile. This one was a really tough one to watch. 😔
Oh man, this is so sad, sorry for your loss. You guys work so hard to keep your birds healthy and safe. R.I.P beautiful Turkey 🦃. Love the fact that you are giving her a special place to rest. 🕊
I’m so happy you are sharing this video and others, I needed to watch this and cried- just wanted to tell you and others who read that everything happens for a reason, a good reason, and all is going to be ok. 👌
That was heartbreaking yet simultaneously heartwarming. I feel as though I've shared your loss because your family's treatment of the situation was so full of warmth and dignity.
I'm glad your injured turkey is on the mend and that your emu is so much better.
I really enjoy who you folks are and how you do things. Despite the sadness of this video's events, I feel a sense of peace through the way you've presented it. Bless y'all.
I always knew these fences are really dangerous, they should keep them free range or have a normal fencing
Agree. They can't do anything now it's happened but i hope they learn from their errors and fix the problem. No problem to make mistakes, but there's an issue where people don't learn from their errors.
If they were free range it would still take a LOT of work to complete and even do it’s more likely for them to be caught by predators
Ignorance, wild animals will attack them if free range. Something ranches have know 200+ years. Bird fencing must be movable too.
Their is no such thing as normal fencing any fencing has a risk of danger to the animal. I know plenty of people who have lost live stock even if their fencing is relatively safe 🤷🏼♀️ it just happens sometimes and really there’s barley anything a person can do to prevent it it’s just the hard truth
I’d they turned on the electric the turkeys wouldn’t have gotten tangled in the first place...
It's amazing how quickly we all get attached to all of our animals even if they're "barn animals". We have 6 chickens that we got at the end of April. They're part of our family. I just love our girls. So sorry for your loss even though it's now been several years. I found your channel today and I've been binge-watching your videos. I love watching your boys with the different animals. I've been looking into this type of fence for our chickens. Seeing this does make me a little nervous. I think I'll have to do more research and think about it a while longer.

The way the feathers where wet I’m assuming a dog was chasing them and when they got caught it “played with them” the same thing happened to my chickens

Probably won't keep turkeys and chickens in it ! Mainly for speciality birds
what aviel kuru just said!!
He needs it for all his birds not just the special ones if he wants to keep them safe. I figured one will get killed by these movable fences it was just a matter of time.
@@susangardiner I don't think he'll be able to make a aviary big enough to keep all his birds. He already has a chicken tractor for it. The aviary is for special birds that can't be kept outside like the peacock .

I hatched a turkey egg with chickens. He hatched a week later. The chickens wouldn't be nice. We were headed to a family event 13 hours away in a day. I decided to take him.
We named him Hashbrown. He was a fantastic traveler. Sat on my shoulder most of the time. For months he followed me everywhere. Lived on the front porch. I eventually sold him to someone with 3 hens. Cried to let him go.
When they came for him, he was showing off, got all fluffed up. They were a little afraid.
I went to him , "Hashy, ya showing off?" I pet his feathers down, picked him up.. he was all kissy face.
He was a great pet. I wanted him to have more friends than only me.

You are so kind to all of the animals on the farm
I am watching this for the third of fourth time and I am still grieving at the loss of Liberty but also your families loss, , too!!❣️❣️ I came across your website late in the year or maybe mid summer I don’t know but I instantly find myself drawn to more than just exotic birds but I think initially most people are attracted to your exotic birds,/
What I found myself drawn to is this amazing love and gentleness and tenderness did exist within the farm and I found myself thinking that
The term, “ free range” Because your children are just as much “FREE” to Rome your property as well as Free to use their minds and share their thoughts and also their creativity with their parents, plus free to help in the projects you’re doing, in fact ENCOURAGED, which I LOVE meaning, Giving their input on issues!… I grew up in a household where the I don’t do the talking and the children get a listening❣️❣️ there was absolutely no freethinking and this made it very hard for me when I left the farm and out into the “adult world quote which I thought I did a good job preparing my son/children for that but he informed me I failed him because nobody told him he did a good job or that they loved him every day in fact they didn’t even care if he did a good job he just better show up and do it. This surprised me deeply because I always had jobs where I was affirmed for my efforts just as you both do for your children😄♥️♥️
(I am not sure my thought process was coming across correctly but I was trying to simply say… And simply is not the right word either… I admire how much your children have grown up in this land called the White House on the hill and they are free to be themselves; they are free to learn about nature and life as it is in his truest form; they are free to experience every single aspect of animals from versing to breeding to life and death and I love the gentleness with which you approach those concepts, in part because you are gentle when you talk to the children and how you handle the animals and the children respond in kind likewise. You get down at their level and look into their eyes and you give them an opportunity to approach all of the animals without fear and with an understanding of who the animal is and they do not need to be afraid as well as what the animal is and is about, what its purpose is on your home and it’s a year apart of the family not just something pretty or food on your farm! And I think this is a very important concept all of that for the children to understand and I think one of the greatest would you do that is when you let the children lay on the grass and allow the baby chicks to lay on your tummy‘s after they have selected exactly the color chicks they want, and then
Freely without fear and calmness and gentleness and gigglingjii well the baby chic’s to experience them as they experienced jm chicks!! True nature in its most raw form!!
here i am tearing up, while theres these boys bury their bird T^T
All life is sacred, even if its "just a bird" or "just a turkey" and this one seemed to be a very special turkey
Wholesome and heart-warming.....sad about the loss of your friend though.... I ordered baby pheasants and a lot of them died as chicks it was hard to deal with but, now I'm glad that I got to witness the ones that did grow up become beautiful birds.

I am so sorry about Lurkey. It is always heartbreaking when you lose an animal especially one that you are really attached or close too. I really miss my birds so much, but they all have passed. I had a really awesome rooster who was always pushed out from the rest of the flock and he followed me and my son everywhere. I think he thought he was a dog because he would jump in my lap and cuddle. I miss him so much. He was such an awesome bird.
There is a purple spray that is used on birds(it might even have some healing properties), to avoid them from picking on the bloody wounds, seems like a must have in similar situations.
I have it in a purple ointment. It contains lavender and chamomile. You cover all the red, and the others won't peck it.
I use BluKote on wounds on my chickens. It’s a dark purple spray and I never have trouble with the others picking on the one that is injured.
