  • Corinna Mantlo, the founder of the all-female motorcycle club The Miss-Fires, takes us on a wild ride through the history of women in motorcycling. She’s sharing stories of ladies who blazed their own trails, like the Van Buren sisters-Augusta and Adeline-who rode motorcycles from Brooklyn to San Francisco in 1916 to prove a point, and the legendary trick rider Samantha Morgan. Mantlo also takes us on a road trip to meet Becky Brown, who founded the women’s motorcycle club, Women in the Wind, in 1976. Let’s roll.

      well. My full time job is owning my own shop making custom motorcycle seats and traveling with the wall of death. I work 7 days a week and lift 30,000 lbs of wall every single week. I have the freedom that any independent contractor has (ha!). The one freedom I do have is that I do what I love, I get to see the country while I travel over 1000 miles every two days, every week by motorcycle for my job and yes, I also have the freedom to take a paying gig once in a blue moon to tell my story on film. I WISH I was sponsored by a credit card company for the gas I buy every day, or the marriot for the hotels I never stay in. haha! Give the American Wall Of Death a look online to see the history and the hard work these guys put into it and why I chose to devote my time to carrying on their tradition. have a great day!

    I think to call these women “fearless” is a bit of an insult to women who really show bravery or beat the odds. If “celebrating” women for minor things like riding a bike is the angle here is it surprising you’ll get push back in the comments? Why not feature truly brave women? Example: Rose Namajunas the UFC fighter who battled mental health issues to become a champion, or female astronauts? These are people worthy of admiration.

    • @Miss1932
      @Miss1932 4 роки тому

      personally I find the fearless comment stupid. nothing I said in my interviews on or off camera imply fearless. I work my butt off every day to get better at riding (on and off the wall). I'm scared and insecure every day. But i'm not giving up! - Corinna

    • @error.418
      @error.418 4 роки тому +1

      "Fearless" is something news and documentaries love to say, but it's never true. But the point is usually that this is a group of people facing fears and moving through them. While it's not as bad as 1916 when the Van Buren sisters were literally arrested just for wearing motorcycle protective gear because it was "men's clothes," there is still a lot of negative judgement towards women who ride motorcycles. There is pressure for women not to enjoy what they want to enjoy. Also, motorcycles are definitely something that requires you to work through your fear to get in to, no matter who you are. Calling out a story for not being some other story is ridiculous.

    How about men going over 150 miles on a circuit...pushing the limits and risking their lives...... since its about women of course we are going to praise them.....women have been riding ,gamimg and doing other things for a quite a while and people still act surprised

    • @teamhex
      @teamhex 4 роки тому +2

      They need constant praise. In everything...from "Silly boys, trucks are for girls" on the back of trucks. To "You just got passed by a girl" on a license plate. All while ignoring that it's not a big accomplishment if you're truly equal. They like the label of being equal, but don't like the lack of attention that comes from it. It's also an insult really...it's like saying "Normally women aren't good at this so it's surprising". Instead of just being a person, they need some form of praise or attention.

    • @teamhex
      @teamhex 4 роки тому +2

      Take a class. It's important to understand the physics behind riding before you attempt it. That and the clutch seem to be the biggest hang up for people. When I took the class we had a woman that had never ridden, and a guy that showed up with a 30k bike saying he had been riding for 20 years. The guy with the 30k bike dropped his bike during the emergency braking part. The woman had issues with the clutch, but by the end of the 2 day class she was a better rider than that old dude with money.

      At about the same time back in the 1900s when some of the first motor bikes were invented, there were as many pioneering female motorcycle riders is there were men. Several women rode them cross-country while others who were serving in the military, used them to transport goods from one Basecamp to the next. There's as much of a historic Legacy with female Riders as there are male ones. So, try not to over glorify yourselves too much. LOL

      @@error.418 I don't understand why females still receive so much flak for being into motorcycles. Especially where women owning and riding their own motorcycles has been going on since some of the first motor bikes were invented back in the 1900s. And when that happened, they weren't designed to be exclusive to any one gender. They were built and suited for the ladies every bit as much as they were for the guys.

      well mine's a triumph. I am proud to know two female run shops in my home town of NYC along with 3 great male run shops. I support as many local businesses as I can at home and on the road. I also do as much maintenance and repairs myself as needed on the road to avoid having to end up at a shop with larger/avoidable mechanical issues. Doing thousands of miles every month traveling with the wall through all weather conditions. oil changes, chain maintenance, etc are regular routine necessities to keep my only mode of transportation running. We have over 15,000 miles on the bikes so far this season. - corinna @miss1932
