    Yeah this is also extremely passive aggressive and demoralizing, probably trying to get you to leave so they don't have to pay redundancy.
    You can only take this at face value if you're employer/boss is fair and competent.
    I have also had these sort of comments only for other bosses to come along and say the opposite.

    As a 40 year headhunter I couldn't disagree more. Yes it IS a valid interpretation but it's only really relevant in a company with a poor culture. It is statistically more likely that the manager is trying to build or begin a dialogue about opportunity or advancement. As a general rule "good" managers aren't bashful about directly engaging an employee about shortcomings. The generic slang from my generation was/is "It's time we sit down and have a come to Jesus meeting". The better the manager the more reluctant he'll be to push an employee forward to an expanded role without laying the ground work first. It's not an optimal line to take in comparison to "where do you see yourself in (X time frame)" but it works.
    As an FYI no good employee (at any level) stays in a toxic culture for long.
