Love how he sometimes doesn't quite brings the birds all the way back. Makes the man reach of it. Pure airedale. Insist on being in charge, no matter what the "owner" thinks. Airedales are wonderful dogs! Endlessly charming, funny, clever, ready to make friends but also ready to defending himself or others. Not a good bred for everyone but are great if one up of the challenge of matching wits and energy with them. Scruffy has been gone 10 years and neighbors still tell stories about him.

I have owned six Airedales, including the one in this video. Since this was taken five years ago, he has improved immensely as a hunting companion and I have improved as a handler. We have run in many hunt tests and have done well. I have to say that the reason I hunt is because I can do it over an Airedale. I only bird hunt with my dogs, that's what I show here in this video. I prefer Airedales to all other breeds for that type of hunting and as a family dog. I will own no other breed.

Thanks for the nice comments. My dog Bob (the one in the video) generally flushes. However, if a bird is not moving at all, he will point on occasion as in this video. This video was shot before we began training for and participating in AKC hunt tests. With more training and experience, he becomes even better to hunt over.

I’ve wanted a working Airedale since I was 13 and read, Edgar Rice Burroughs, “John Carter on Mars”. I am 62 and my next dog will be one. Thank you for publishing this.

One of the interesting things about Airedales is that they were originally bred to be all around hunting dogs that were capable of hunting any type of furred or feathered critter. They have been used successfully to hunt all types of waterfowl and upland birds, as well as bear, mountain lions, wild boar and raccoon. They were used to find wounded soldiers, lay cable, carry messages and many other tasks for the British and American forces during WW1.

I love this video. I am researching the hunting Airedales to see if they would be a good fit as my next dog. My dad has had German Wirehaired Pointers for the past 40 years (Rooster is my profile picture) and hunted everything with them. I know if I get a GWP he'll take it over so I was looking into other versatile breeds. Your video really showcases the intelligence and pheasanr hunting ability, thanks for making my search a little easier! Can't wait to share some of my new pup!

I am amazed your video is great. I've had Airedales since the 1970's. The one I have now is a hunter all the way. But without the great training and discipline as your dog. Our Airedale is almost ninety lbs and all muscle strength and endurance. We hike 3 miles everyday with his buddy a Standard Schnauzer. We have otters, fox and raccoons at our cabin and the Airedale is in heaven. I believe we have part of the Oorange strain. Now just to train him like your. My hat off to you.

  • @bobspheasant

The Airedale is not the hunting dog for everyone. Neither is the GSP or Lab for that matter. It is all about personal preference. Most who choose Airedales to hunt over do so because they love to live with such a great all-around dog that doesn't shed, is very smart and very loving. They are also excellent watch dogs if trained for the task. Besides all this they are great fun to hunt over. You can't ask for more than that. This is why they are gaining popularity with hunters.

Nicely done video. The Airedale is a very versatile breed. The pointing style shown is interesting. I use my Airedale for a variety of things including upland & waterfowl hunting. His upland style is much differerent though. He's a real hard flusher, rather than a pointer.

Bob is from a conformation breeder in Iowa, not a hunting breeder. However, since she had had many years of experience with Airedales, she knew Bob was a dog well suited to working. It also helps that she exercises her pups in a nearby field where Pheasants are known to roost. Bob is not typical of all Airedales in the hunting style shown in this video. Airedales do not typically point. Typically, they have more of a hesitation flush. Since Bob is also a competition obedience dog, I was able to train him to point. In years since this video was shot I ran him in AKC spaniel hunt tests where he earned a Senior Hunter title. To do this, I had to work at un-training the pointing. Now at 11 years old, he is retired from hunt testing, but not hunting. We were out this morning. Even in a heavy wind, he found three Pheasants and we brought home two!

I have hunted German Wirehairs for years (like the one in my profile picture). Great versatile family dogs that work on everything from birds to large animals. They are great all around dogs I was just researching different breeds. Since then though I have hunted over a few Airedales in California and they were awesome! Great poise, sharp attentiveness and control - I think breeding is only part of the dog, training and time spent are the most important!

I'd agree with what you said ,Gsp s are great all round dogs properly trained Great tireless workers in wet ireland during shooting season. November to January ,That said after looking g at the Aird ales working in usa ,I'm gobsmacked to see how good they are as shooting dogs ,I k ew a man long dead that shot in his young days I. Ireland and he said the best hunting dogs he e er worked were irish terriers ,Even able to hunt down otters he said and go up six feet after a rising pheasant ,Now virtually nobody uses them like the Airdales, We tend to forget that these breeds served the shooting people of England d a d ireland for a very long g time ,Anyway it's brilliant to see the Airdales hunting pheasant in usa , That'll do the breed a power of good to reestablish itself again 👏 👏 👏 Big praise to the smart shooting g men in usa

We usually keep the leg fur (referred to as furnishings in the Airedale world) a little shorter during hunting season. I find that horse mane de-tangler works pretty well at removing the burrs when they occur.

  • @bobspheasant
    @bobspheasant 13 років тому +1

@jimquantic Bob is my first dog. My wife helped with the obedience training. We had to issues from the beginning with hard mouth. However, if a bird is very energetic, flapping etc. in his mouth, he will clamp down harder with his mouth. I do have some problems with Bob getting burrs in his leg fur on occasion. As the season moves on, his furnishings (leg fur) will wear down. By the end of hunting season, he has little left.

Airedales have been and still are used as police dogs and have attained the highest of Shitzhund titles. On the other hand many are used as therapy dogs at nursing homes. They have been know to be successful tracking dogs, some are even used in search and rescue. I also know of a team of Airedales that are used in mushing competitions and compete favorably with sled dog breeds. Te Airedale is very smart and can be taught to do about anything, much more than any other breed of hunting dog!

That's a happy dog. A dog likes to have a task to perform, something they can feel proud of, and this dog is working with his master in the field.....what would a dog rather do than that? The gentleman hunter is an excellent shot----looks like a 20 gauge over-and-under shotgun he's got there----and I just hope he's eating all those birds he's taken in the field. The Airedale is an under-utilized breed, as are many others whose abilities are seldom fully explored. Nice video.

@bobspheasant It is obvious you know what you are doing, great to see this great breed working with a good handler and good friend I'm sure. Tell me two things though: one, is it tough to teach "soft mouth" to this breed? and two, is there any particular problem with the coat type and the thorns you bump in to? I work a dog in desert scrub, so the thorns can be serious, I use "rough wear" boots and they are great, but still, it is tough on any dog coat.

My dog Bob and I have hunted in temperatures as low as 10 deg F or so with wind with no problems. The colder of the two days shooting for this video, it was about 18 deg F.
Bob is a family dog first and a hunter second. He was two years old before he saw his first bird because I only became interested in hunting near that time.

The Airedale is a flushing dog. However, according to their AKC hunting style description used to judge them in Spaniel Hunt Tests, they have a "hesitation" flush. Most Airedales I have seen work in the field have a hesitation flush. However, many have a more aggresive flush. The dog in the video was taught to hold the hesitation flush at first as you can see. I have worked with him in recent years to be somewhat more agressive in flushing.

I have a Great Dane trained to "point" deer. If he gives the signal, all I need do is follow him off into the wooded area and nearly always we will find a deer in under 4 minutes. That's from training and a LOT of time spent with the dog. Now if I had an Airedale on the other hand, there's no telling the type of searching and tracking I could do. An Airedale has the prey drive. The Great Dane has what I call the "couch drive" where they are intensely driven to drive everyone else off the couch so they can lay back and monopolize it with a nap that involves them spread out in the most inefficient manner! That's why I'm seriously considering getting an Airedale btw! :)

The Airedale in this video is out of the Regent Line in Iowa with a sire out of the Redcoat Line in Minnesota. Since Airedales have been allowed to run in AKC Spaniel Hunt Tests since 2009, I have spent a lot of time training Bob (the dog) during the off season. Bob earned his AKC Senior Hunter Title in May and he is much sharper in the field since this video was shot in 2008. Bob also has multiple obedience titles to his credit, that my wife has trained him to.

I've always thought that A. are more kind of flushing dogs. You know, for wild boar, roe's, foxes, badgers. Also for bloodhound aspects.
A forestman i know here in Bavaria has had them, 2 of them, instead of a 'Steirische Rauhhaarbracke' for deer hunting in the Alps.
    Very uncommon and seldom today.
Have you ever think about a German Flushing Dog=Wachtelhund=Quail Dog=German Spaniel as allround-hunter?!
(It isn't a Spaniel, it looks like a one. It's an old bavarian purebreed.)

Ill take a chessy any day over an airedale and i have owned both. I personally would never own another Airedale no matter how attractive they are they dont take to instruction well and become aggressive if you try to get them to do anything they dont want to do. Chesapeakes can be problematic but i had nothing but dedication and loyalty from Cheasapeakes and Airedales were just the opposite. I figured they would be smart and loyal like fox terriers and from two different breeders i got similar temperament in airedales, hard headed, aggressive and hard to teach. Would never get another one.

As far as training goes... He is my first dog and I trained him myself with the help of my wife who is an obedience instructor. We took a couple of 7 week classes from an retriever person to start, then it has been seminars and practice. Since this video was shot in the fall of 2008, we have trained for and now run in AKC hunt tests. As a result, I have become a better handler and my dog has become sharper.

Theres an Interesting blog with good accurate and historic information called AIREDALES ARE A FAILURE
I recommend it before anyone get this breed, living off of hype.
Its claim to fame was as a battle dog, trained ^ then starved to run to opposition tanks to be blown up aka Suicide mission. The sum total of their greatness.
As Hunting dogs, they lack grit &courage-overexaggerated tales of nonsense in comparison to other real hunting dogs like drahthaars, Catahoula/Lacy curs, dogos etc

  • @StSimonMartyr

This is painful to watch, its like watching paint dry.
They are not hunting dogs, they are otterhounds under all of that hair.
There are much more versatile dogs with real grit-from Jagd terriers to Drahtaars to Dogos & Catahoula curs.
Airedales have achieved no prominance in anything and are well over 100+ years old, many breeds werent even conceived then ^ far surpassed dales as workers and hunters.
The working dales come from Germany with strict breeding standardsSorry but its true.

Hey Dark. Note this is showing the Airedale hunting Pheasants, not fur. If you want an Airedale to hunt bear, like they were known to do 100 years ago, breeders are still around that can get you a dog for that purpose. Overall, Airedales are not as hard as they were 50 - 100 years ago, and that is a good thing for most people. Most want to hunt Pheasants or ducks and there are many around for that. Most don't want an aggressive dog that will kill other dogs as well as fur bearing game like bears and mountain lions.

I really think this is painful to watch as someone who owns GSPs and Versatiles.
Its sort of like watching paint dry.
Ask why is it that Airedales dont hunt in their own native country? Why is that done by Cockers, Springers, Labs and HPR Versatiles?

There is NO comparison between the breeds.
The airedale is a manufactured breed, its not a hound, nor a terrier.
The DD/GWP was bred TO Hunt, its the most popular HUNTING dog IN Germany where its LAW to hunt with a dog and recover ALL wounded game. Also the largest Breed club in the world among hunters.
Watching a dale hunt is like watching paint dry. Control? Theres no horsepower to control.
Its a novelty breed at best.

Thats amazing to see a terrier hunt point and retrieve.
You know, they were used as Police dogs in England in the 1930's.
