  • In this video I talk about what the BMW lifter tick is, why BMW’s make a ticking noise, and potentially how to fix the ticking noise on your BMW.
    The article: www.quirkyuncle.com/2013/04/12...
    This can occur on an E90, E92, E82, E85, E86. Cars with the N52 engine, like the 328i, 128i, Z4
    NOTE: I don’t claim to be an expert at this topic at all, just sharing info I have found and experienced with my own car.

    Liqui moly 8345 hydrostößel additive or Wynn's valve lifter treatment worked for my e36 M43.
    The engine had the same noise , especially when it was hot.

    Thanks for the video and in-depth discussion. My car has hydraulic lifters and hydraulic controlled VVC mechanisms, which uses the engine oil. The recommended oil is a semi-synthetic 10w-40, but I thought I could use a 5w-40 full synth because I live in a cold place and I just thought full synth is always better. Turns out I got more tappet noise and I'm considering going back to the non-glamorous Castrol Magnatec 10w40 part synth.

    Hydraulic lifters don't adjust. They are hydraulic. They pump up. If they are ticking good chance the oil wasn't changed enough or the wrong oil has been used in it cashing a build up of sludge/ contaminants. Run some Castrol GTX through it, or something similar that isn't to aggressive but aggressive enough to clean the system out gradually. Once the contaminants are out. The lifters will be able to pump up correctly, and the ticking will go awaym

      @@KingOfYouAllGamerBoy Ensure proper oil level and add oil if needed. Drive until engine oil reaches operating temperature. Then, using manual mode, maintain RPMs around 4K for 3-5 minutes. Hydraulic lifter tick will be gone as oil pressure will have ensured proper lubrication of hydraulic lifters. The sound won’t damage your engine, it’s just annoying. 🙂

    An oil change alleviated my ticking. Driving a 2004 z4 3.0i with an m54 engine. I'm using synthetic 5w-30 and I change the oil about 7500 miles. Probably still need adjustments, but at least I won't have the damn ticking anymore. Check the oil levels and using the right oil.

    Bought an E36 328i M52 with this once, it did a lot of short trips. Solution is to warm up the engine then rev it at 3000 rpm for 3 minutes in neutral. Let it idle for a minute and if it's not cured try again. It's down to the hydraulic tappets needing bled. More of an issue on N5x engine series than the older ones.

    I had this same noise in my E90 and the people in the workshop told me that this is caused because I didn't use the correct oil and the problem was that I bought oil in a gas station and I used that in my car and after a couple of months this issue appeared but know looks like everything is good. They changed the oil and the filter and the noise disappeared.

      Marvel was always a known cure for this noise for years ive heard about marvel ..what is happening is the lifters go flat usually when they sit for a long period of time revving the engine brings up oil preasure inturn pumping up the lifter my guess is the marvel is thinner than the oil in the car making it easier for oil to flow through the lifters reasurising them back up and loosening any gunk that may be stopping oil from preasurising the lifters ... I also like to run some seafoam in engines that are all gunked up on the top end and running Castrol motor oil as it cleans out all that gunk makes the engine look new again .

    BMW lifter all hidraulic... After sometimes the check valve inside the lifter will clogged or If you rarely drive it will fills with air buble and make it stick with hidraulic piston inside the lifter and creating thicking noise.

    • @WalmartShooter
      @WalmartShooter 3 місяці тому

      If it only happens on cold starts and gets worse in winter and always goes away or greatly reduces when the car is warmed up, that means you’ve got poor cold flow of the oil, switch to 0w30 instead of 5w30 and throw on a high flowing filter that still does an above average job at filtering like puralator boss, or Napa filter which actually flows better and should be cheaper the downside is it doesn’t filter as good as purulator boss the purulator is the best middle ground I’ve seen between good flow and good filtration, also high rev your engine once a day (don’t do it until it’s warmed up and been running 20mins or so

    • @Supraifyification
      @Supraifyification 3 місяці тому

      @@WalmartShooter thanks for the tip but turned out it was just a bad AC Pulley, it ticked like this and went away when warm assume some rubber or plastic expanded and it removed the noise. i run 5w40 no issues.

    The cause is lifters not getting enough oil, your car either burns oil and its low, which is another problem. r the "squirters" are gunked either from using non factory recommended oil, having the car sit for over winter or a year and not changing oil after.
    Add seafoam to your crank case and gas tank a hundred miles before next oil change.
    If youve worn enough metal on between your camshaft and lifters, itll never go away.

  • @The_Komzik
    @The_Komzik 6 років тому +5

    I had this problem in my 07 E92 328i with the N52 engine. I used to put 6.5 quarts of oil in the car when changing the oil and the ticking was prevalent. I increased the oil to a full 7 quarts of oem BMW synthetic and the ticking stopped immediately and never came back. I also use sport mode in my auto transmission which gives better performance for city driving and over 55 mph I shift to normal drive for better gas mileage. This keeps the revs higher and shifts later and thereby helps with the overall workout of your engine. My mechanics are BMW racing team and they told me the car loves to be driven hard and taken to red line through the gears to keep the overall performance at its peak. If your car has really high mileage, I wouldn't recommend taking to red line often if at all. Just treat your car like a pony and not a race horse to keep the components performing at their peak.

I don’t know your current mileage on that car but if it’s passed 250,000 and your hearing this noise unfortunately the only thing would be to reshave your piston ports and get bigger lifters. basically a engine rebuild. In my opinion its not worth it, just ride that car out till the end. use that sea foam before your oil change it could clear up some of that gunk, best of luck bro !

      your absolutely right. the manual call for 5-30/5-40 and states that it is acceptable to use either in all condition. My 3 BMWs do not tick because I use 0-40 Synteck. You can use 0W-40 in the summer because the temp of the oil will be greater than the need for a 0W but will give you the whole range. Like an expert at Amsoil once said "if its summer out there, theres no difference between 0-30 and 5-30 because its summer and both oils are 30. In the winter the 0W is your engines best friend. Also change the oil every 5k miles or 7k in Kilometers to keep the peanut butter sludge out of the vanos. I seen it on those 15k miles oil change/ 25k kilometers oils change....not good.

      It has 105,000 miles

    • @Paul37Ontario
      @Paul37Ontario 6 років тому +1

      Use Castrol Synteck 0-40 every 5k miles. It is available almost everywhere, better availability then Redline. Redline is no better just marketing hype. Also if you go to the BMW website (I live in Canada, so for me it's the BMW Canadian official website, US would be the same since it's the same car, but you should look it up or call the dealer and ask) Anyway BMW uses Castrol Synteck long life. The non long life regular full synthetic Castrol Syntek is perfect for 5k miles oil change intervals. BMW website list 5-30 as there Bronze oil change and 5-30 on there Silver oil change and 0w-40 for Gold oil change (and 10w-60 only for true M models) So the best grade you can get at the dealer is 0w-40 oil. That's why I use 0-40 and my X3 3.0si runs like a top and nice and quiet, same for the wife's X3 and my old 328i that I keep as a spare car. You have the full range regardless of ambient temperature. And the VI's (viscosity enhancers) in the oil will adapt to whatever temp the engine is under.

    Thanks for the video, but you’re a bit wrong. I have daily driven a 09 E89 Z4 sdrive30i for 2 and a half years now. Mine has essentially the exact engine as your Z4 30si, I beat on my car everyday, keep my rpms high and the ticking noise still hasn’t gone away regardless of a cold, or a warm start. I’ve packed over 40k miles on it since I’ve purchased it also. Thankfully I haven’t had any issue at all with my car but to say that the noise is coming from not driving it as much or because you don’t have your rpms high is completely wrong since I do that daily and the noise is still present. It’s not an annoying noise as you can only hear it when you basically pop the hood. But just wanted to inform you about that. I’m not an expert on this at all, just wanted to share my experience for those who are seeking more info about this.

      @t_c  6 років тому +2

      I appreciate you sharing your experience, but you are claiming I am wrong based on your experience. However, my experience is just the opposite of yours, when I drive the car more often, or drive it harder, the lifter tick goes away almost instantly. I only ever notice it after the car sits for a while. I have owned this car for about 2 years as well, and thats my personal experience, which is not wrong but it is what it is. Seems like a case-by-case scenario.

    • @Explore-Gobal
      @Explore-Gobal 5 років тому

      Lifter tick is the result, but the cause can vary. Many BMWs have some lifter tick when cold and it will almost disappear when the engine gets warm and is driven a bit. Lifter tick that does not go away even after the engine is warm and driven may be a sign of (for whatever reason) not enough oil getting to the lifters. This can be sludge in the oil clogging up the lifters or worse. As stated in this thread, regularly maintained oil changes with BMW spec oil (LL-1), not just oil that says "recommended" is a must for these cars. It's probably safe to say that many BMW drivers do not use the proper oil and do not keep up regular oil changes. I say that because I know quite a few BMW drivers and for many of them the Bimmer is more of a toy/status symbol than a complex machine that need TLC in order to run optimally.

    This video brings attention to a common issue with BMW's (and a lot of other cars too) but it doesn't really give all that much useful information about it, other than anecdotes? Lifter tick is, in fact caused by the lifters being "out of adjustment" as you put it, but the important thing is WHY.
    In my experience (I'm a BMW/Mercedes technician) the quality of the engine oil, type, etc is a big contributor. How often it's changed is another. I have had lifters fail completely after ticking for years and what I usually find is that the tiny oil passages leading into/out of them are completely plugged with sludge/dirt/carbon. It's pretty nasty stuff.

      Johnathan Waters are these the hydraulic lash adjusters? Ive replaced some on a dodge charger that had the same issue. Would you recommend just replacing them? I bought an 06 325i that sat for over a year so the ticking is ver pronounce. I rrplaced the valve cover gasket and it is very very dirty inside. Oil is so dried up in there that it's flaking off. Any advice?

    • @Johnathan_Waters
      @Johnathan_Waters 6 років тому +1

      It depends on how bad it is. I've been able to clean some of the noisy ones out by just flushing the engine over and over. There are a lot of ways you can do this. (Some people even say you can put a quart of ATF into the crankcase, which i personally don't do) but ultimately if they are totally impacted, they need to be replaced. "Sludge"

      How can we be sure about oil quality and such? Mine goes to the dealer for changes but doesn't get driven in winter. Parked in garage with battery tender. I've been told by dealer needs new lifters but an independent mechanic (European motor specialists) have said not the case. Usually the tick does subside with the "standard" fix of maintaining >2000 rpm for 5 minutes?

      *+Thomas Clark I don't know who gave u ur information, but ur engine ticks because of accumulation of burned oil left in it, when u heat it up it obviously stop ticking, try cleaning the top of the camshafts when u open the top of the engine, it should stop*

      @@fromthedeserts2724 when it ticks... regular oil change helps and in summer I use fully synthetic 5W/40, winter 5W/30 Mobil oil always Genuine oil filter. Its an annoying trait for the N52, but irritating intermittent : NOT disastrous. When engine is hot/normal temps, then switch engine off, put ignition ON, then put into 'sport' mode and use car safely because it now uses higher revs which also helps to 'bleed' the hydraulic lifter's.!. This cures my ticking, but sometimes it comes back, I'm used to it now BUT its an awesome engine especially in sport mode. Hope this helps you.

    Yes i agree you don't know about lifter noise. Do some homework and try again. Lifters in your car are hydraulic , there for if you have Lifters noise its most likely they are draining out of oil. So you would need new lifters maybe some sort of lifter additive for the lifters until there replaced.

  • @francescotossut6111
    @francescotossut6111 5 років тому

    Tried many solutions without success. After months i think I solved the problem with an oil additive (lubegard bio/tech in my case, maybe others do the job as well). Results came after 1000km more or less. It has been 6 months since then and the ticking never came back.

    • @hanynowsky
      @hanynowsky 2 роки тому

      Lubegard Hyper ZDDP Zinc additive
      It adds a film on the hydraulic lifters that sticks to the surfaces a very long time, so upon cold start even with oil starvation, lifters would still move freely without sticking and the noise is significantly reduced.

    To reserve the lifters,
    Park
    Start the engine
    Rev your car to 3000 rpm ( 2 min )
    This will reset your hydraulic lifter tick.

Unfortunately, left the car parked for months at a time thinking I was keeping the miles off of it was a wise idea....guess not. I will try the bleeding and a heavier oil if the noise does not lessen.
