    I too started watching you from the volcano reports. 🌋 But in these survivalist videos your skills are pretty sensational to watch. Particularly making that birchcraft bowl and the stew you cooked in it..looked absolutely 💯 delicious. But then you do make everything seem so easy! Can't wait to watch more of your videos, for sure...

    I could not believe that the cooking pot made from spruce bark did not burn up on that fire! That was the very first time that I have ever seen anyone do such a thing, and I was NOT aware that our native American ancestors cooked with similar pots! Great video!

    I read James Michener's "Centennial" at age nine.I fell in love with the plains Indians.I wished I was one of them.I studied the first nation people, and the mountain men, and how they lived at a young age, because I wanted to know.Up until a couple of years ago, If you asked me what "bushcraft" was I would have answered, "something the Australians do?"Then I find on youtube adults Doing "Bushcraft".To me as an adult "bushcraft is a skill set that I learned as a young boy That gives me the confidence to explore the off-trail backcountry Of the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade mountains of Washington state.I guess my favorite thing about "bushcraft" would be the confidence it gives me in the backcountry.You, sir, have pushed the limits of what I have seen on youtube and are going to end up with a lot of viewers.

    congratulations on 2000 subscribers. Now I've known about heating stones and boiling liquid in bark containers with the hot rocks but this was a first. The damp bark and liquid inside must be the reason the bark didn't burn through. Well seeing is believing. Thank you for sharing you wonderful cinematography.

    To directly respond to the question: I have always enjoyed Bush-Craft because it offers problems that call for solutions in order for me to enjoy an older but very complex technology. Part of it is joinery and rigging with cordage; part of it is making a fire and judging its readiness for cooking; part of it is being a 'kit geek'; trying to guess what will work for a certain place or likely weather or, particularly, colder winter weather. And then there is the unceasing wonder of nature, even if it is just off a byway or on a back woodlot of our farm.

    Cool video, good to see the resurgence in native tech. Although they didn't put they pots directly into the fire, they wont last very long that way. The traditional way to boil water before the Columbian exchange was to put hot rocks into the containers.

    Hi, new subscriber. watched a few of your videos this afternoon after a friend sent me a link. I really like your style, a picture speaks a thousand words. You eat my style of cooking, I love chunky stews & soups, even more so when cooked over a fire, got to admit I have never cooked in bark pots though. wrapping a fish in paperbark ( Melaleuca, Australian tree) & cooking it in coals is the closest I have done.
    anyway just letting you know I really enjoyed them & now long to get out in the outdoors when our weather cools.

    because the temperature of the spontaneous combustion of wood is about 240 Degree you should cook putting a dish on hot embers buried under ash and not the flames. If the bark let in water and "sweating" on the side of the fires as the paper it could be put up in flames! :-)

    I just recently started watching your channel. Normally, I enjoy narration as it helps me to learn not just the "how" of what someone is doing, but also the "why". However, your video work is so complete that in your instance it makes for an enjoyable product. I do have one question... why did you put dirt on the string you hung your water bottle with? I was always taught to never let your cordage get dirty as the dirt would break down the fibers and shorten its life. I wish I could get out as often as you do. Keep up the good work. Love your channel.

    One of the only non-vocal videos that is so strong on content that it doesn't need any vocal.....great job ! How do you keep that bark bowl from going up in flames, or not burn and leak?

    • @MrLolol55
      @MrLolol55 7 років тому +1

      fieldagent59 is in the forest The liquid in the bowl actually keeps the bark from burning completely. Water is a great heat sink, hence why it takes so long to boil! Basically the water absorbs the heat of the fire so that the bark gets hot but never burns all the way through. You could test this very easily with a balloon! Simply put a candle flame to a regular air filled balloon and it will pop, but if you fill another balloon with water and try it again you'll find it won't pop. Pretty cool stuff :)

    • @dirtbleepdigger9911
      @dirtbleepdigger9911 7 років тому

      You can also put a plastic bottle filled with water set it in the fire, and it will boil and not burn up the bottle until the water boils out of the bottle.

    • @fieldagent59isintheforest32
      @fieldagent59isintheforest32 7 років тому

      that's pretty amazing, that the water would pull heat away fast enough to keep the plastic from melting through....
