I really like this review. Last years everybody is comparing EV's to EV's and never to ICE or hybrids. The market is changing and this is the choice people have to make first, not which EV but ICE/hybrid or EV. Great job on video itself too btw!
I mean, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the v60 weren't included either but I think that's only because they are too old to be compared to the brand new c class and the 3 series, not because they are inherently bad... Also, maybe they weren't available
The BMW can only charge with 3,6 kW and when you tested how fast the petrol engine switches on, you clearly did it with a cold motor. The power dial had a temperature icon and didn't scale up to 100%, which it only does when the motor and battery are warmed up. It takes about 5 minutes of driving to do so and when they are all ready, they work even better together. Just wanted to clarify.
I own a 330e and love it. 2 Things worth to mention about it based on this video. 1 you should get the adaptiv susp. Its softer in hybrid modus and firmer in sport. 2 when carwow accelerate in this video they drive in e-mode (pure electric). You will feel a completely different car in hybrid modus regarding respons etc. You can get xboost in both modus but in pure electric xboost kick in much later and slower. You almost never drive in pure emode because the hybrid modus and sport modus gives you the best experience.

There’s always something you miss out when comparing hybrids. You give the electric-only range, but what about the overall range? Do these hybrids suffer from smaller fuel tanks than the “standard” models?
he did say while driving the teslas that you do have to be more aware on longer trips where in the other cars you rely on the engine to be able to go far enough for you.
My G21 330e does around 330 miles with a full tank of petrol and a full battery. Although realistic electric only range is more like 25 miles, but then I do have the xDrive version.
Very true. If you look at the 5 series it matters quite a bit. The 540i can have 68 liters and the 545e only 46 liters. And on a longer trip the battery will be empty which means more fuel consumption for the extra weight.
@@Tomoyo0827 No I had the C350e and colleagues have the 330e, the hybrids have smaller fuel tanks due to battery. The 330e was about 350 miles range with full battery and tank.

I think that's the case with most cars, as long as a little common sense is applied - they really have got the hang of designing and building horseless-carriages, these days. Having said that, I had a Ford Focus as a courtesy car recently. The positioning of the head rest made it akin to being strapped into a medieval instrument of torture, and virtually undrivable. Small things can make or break a car for the individual, so a decent test drive is a must.
I'd even argue that we need more than just TM3s when it comes to compare anything with EVs. Why not a Kia EV6 RWD in this vid for example ? I would have loved to hear how it compares on the interior part. We already know everything about Teslas !
Thomas Timmermans because those aren’t even remotely similar cars…? The EV6 isn’t a sedan like these 3. It doesn’t have performance like these 3. I also like the big open feel, thanks to low hood and big wide windshield and roof designs in the Tesla vehicles, gives off a spaceship vibe. Exactly, let the people choose if they want the beaver look of the M4 or the normal looks of the 3 series. But it would have been embarrassing for BMW if nobody bought the M4 and they had to admit they messed up the design. So that’s why they didn’t do it.
I was lucky enough to drive a Tesla model 3 for a week. Its not a premium car, cheap materials, uncomfortable seats, lots of roadnoise. I couldnt even normally talk at highway speed. However the Mercedes is a quality car in every aspect. I bought it and have zero regrets.
Merc should start putting the proper old Merc grill on their cars again, makes sense with everyone else putting big grills on cars even though they are electric! Can't beat looking down the bonnet and using the bonnet star as a gun sight!
The folding of the rear seats from the boot is such an underated security feature that BMW and Mercedes have always had, don't know why all cars don't have it.
Here in Brisbane Australia, people shopping in this 3-series, C-class, A4 segment, generally go for the Model 3. One in three homes in Brisbane have solar power, 2 in 5 homes in Australia have solar. You do recommend to go all the way electric but then why have you bothered to compare hybrid with full electric? take the full elecric versions from every producer here and see what it is like. It is to be expected that a full electric will have its advantages ahead of a hybrid as the hybrid is a compromise is not white and is not black sometimes is better but most of the times is enhereting the downsize from both parrents (see the electricity run out, see the wheight, see the hump in the floor, see the gases, booth space and running costs)

Even in terms of operating cost, it only makes sense in countries that either have tremendous excess hydroelectric power (like Norway) or burn coal for electricity generation (like in China). In the US, fast charging station cost is equivalent to well over $5 per gallon for comparable gasoline cars (in warm weather; cold weather reduce battery car range by half, due to the need to heat battery and heat car). Home charging using grid power is equivalent to about $2.5 per gallon, which is not much savings compared to gasoline price and easily cancelled out by faster vehicle depreciation and much higher insurance cost due to fire hazard. Don't be surprised by a huge battery disposal fee in a few years as used batteries pile up. Only households with solar panels can save by operating a battery car, and that is only because of subsidy due to "net-metering"; once electricity companies charge solar panel households transmission cost both ways instead zero transmission cost (which is more than half of electricity bill), the whole battery electric nonsense will only operate in the market segment for glorified golf carts.

Screens instead of buttons aren't ideal for those with less than perfect eyesight. If you need separate glasses for distance, e.g. driving, they're not going to be great for reading text and other content on a relatively close-up screen. Also, as you get older, your night-vision deteriorates and screens are only going to exacerbate this issue, even if they do have a "dark" mode.
Screen is clearer than the dark buttons in the BMW for many functions. But as Matt says you set most of the stuff in the Tesla to auto and forget it. A4 is last gen, no point comparing

3 series is so ugly
There’s always something you miss out when comparing hybrids. You give the electric-only range, but what about the overall range? Do these hybrids suffer from smaller fuel tanks than the “standard” models?
he did say while driving the teslas that you do have to be more aware on longer trips where in the other cars you rely on the engine to be able to go far enough for you.
No, plug in hybrid has same range as petrol variant only slightly less than diesel

I’m saving up for a model 3, I’m about 2K away from what I wanna spend on the down payment & I can’t wait 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I would totally go with the BMW if I didn't have to leave my kidney every time I had to change oil in the authorized dealer. EVs have change the profit equation when it comes to selling cars. Ripping customers pockets every time they visit the dealer have its days numbered. For me Tesla wins in simplicity and maintenance cost. Not to mention it drives very nice.
Do you mean £300 every two years? Sounds so expensive right?
U must actually remove Tesla and put Audi A4. It matches.
👀
No, this comparison does make sense and is useful
@@carwow .
I own 330e M Sports 2021 ( its been 8 months ) and have been feeling that little harsh on bumps then normal previous models I wondered and I couldn't figure out that its because of weight. BMW needs better suspension for that extra battery weight and to be honest they need bigger battery size. :P lol
I loved the way car goes. Its so fast. It take little bit time to kick off but once it kick off it goes 95-100 MPH easily without even noticing. Love the experience driving this one.
You should make a review and upload it on your channel
Before even watching I’m quite sure Mat will choose Tesla, it’s his car of choice recently ;)
And that says a lot if you think about how many different cars he drives every day! So if someone like him says that tesla Model 3 is the best option in this class we should believe him!
@@KsNoz It drives good, interior is a bit meh but it's super ugly on the outside, I'd take the Merc.
@@billgoldbergmania different people different opinions! I like the interior of the merc but i prefer the outside look of the model 3 and of course the performance!
Bmw and merc look too boring nowadays
@@simonwilson7581 his mum picked the car, it was her choice, he just explained every car in detail to her!
He even tried to convince her to not choose the tesla because its more expensive 😄
Simon Wilson you’re brainwashed if you think that. Actually go through the past videos on this channel. In the past few months, BMW videos by *far* get the most views. The few Tesla videos he’s made recently haven’t gotten any more views than usual and rarely outperform the BMW ones. Same exact thing goes for mercedes. You’re just looking for things to complain about if you think his mother choosing the Tesla was this huge marketing scheme to draw views. She just liked the car more, not everything is a conspiracy theory.
Great video! Thanks for actually choosing a car. I agree about the Tesla. Unfortunately it still does not have the status of a BMW and Merc and that is what I am seeing in Germany. People still go for the German luxury cars. My next car will however be a Tesla.
For me I like smaller wheels. Reason being that small wheels gives you a thicker tyre’s compare to big wheels. The thicker the tyres the more comfortable the ride.
Finally someone who understands the purpose of these cars. They're not sports cars, Tesla isn't luxury 😂
@@tati-anaroseee4316 actually tesla is considered a luxury car brand look it up
@@tati-anaroseee4316 lastly both c300 and bmw 3 series also have sports version trim levels and the high performance sport versions sooo......You're wrong on both parts
@@flyclyfire188 I don't consider a sports c class a luxury car either it's sports-luxury which is the same as alfa. Also no, there's no nice materials in a Tesla and the design is very bland, the only thing luxury about it is the price tag. You cant just throw a screen in a car with less thought than a base ford focus and say it's Luxury.
@@tati-anaroseee4316 that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying car magazines that the tesla cars are luxury. It's an actual luxury brand
That BMW is my all time best car so far
Agreed just the best overall inside and out the other two the merc and the tesla are both so weird and ugly looking I just love the interior of the merc but that's all
It's absolutely CRAZY that Tesla don't give you a head up display considering the stupid placement of the speed.
This is what I've been waiting for, EV's getting to the stage where they're not compared against each other (latest "Tesla killer" vs Tesla) but a mainstream motoring reviewer comparing them against their ICE cross-shop competitors. Awesome job, well done CarWow
Not full ICE competitors but competitors weighed down by useless 1000lb sandbags that are prone to catching fire (aka lithium batteries). The full ICE versions of BMW 3 and Mercedes C ride far better than any of the three and handle better. And if not for the tax/regulatory subsidies the 6-cylinder versions of the full ICE cars should cost about the same as the hybrids with 4-cyl.
@@jims8828 I remember the same nonsense 10 years ago when people complained they need to charge iPhone every night (Nokia only once per week), no physical buttons, etc. Get used to the idea that ICE age is over and combustion tech is already dead. It has no future.
@@dmitrii336 iPhone offered many features that Nokia phones didn't offer due to Nokia not embracing full operating systems like Android while itself unable to deliver a full computer OS like iOS and Android. Battery powered cars offer no real functional advantage over gasoline cars while having numerous disadvantages in critical characteristics such range, safety and longevity (therefore depreciation).
I’d go with the 3-series
yeah, go with the dated - old looking 3-series over the ultra modern, planet saving EV (hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm) - wake up!!!!
@@hefwilliams5400 have you seen the model 3? It looks uglier than most Asian cars and I think they are the worst looking cars out there. They are more common than fiestas where I live and it’s never a good sight.

Tesla all day every day for me - it’s so fun to drive, quiet, ample storage, “best service is no service”, great for the environment - love it 😍
Yes but we own one Tracy. We know. The haters dont own one and 'assume' its not good. And feel the need to tell Tesla owners that their car is not good. Its sad and at this point their ego will never allow them to change their mind. I guess the men in the desert wearing white dresses are very happy these ICE lovers still exist :)
@@Maarten_vd lol 😂 this argument will rage for an age, but at the end of the day (or decade 2030) there will be more EVs than ICE & Tesla will be the biggest car maker in the world. The new C-class is a beast🔥 😍

Ugly af boring weird and droopy facia only its interior makes it cool..Bimmer is the best!
I live in London and its a no brainer to go for the Model 3. No congestion charge and reduced on street parking rates. 1% BIK. Literally worth £1000’s a year. My development car park is filling up with them.
This is Why I Trust Matt, he does not hate on Tesla like all the other amateur car reviewers trying to show how cool they are, and wanting to be popular by hating on Tesla, He tells the Truth.
That open bonit on Tesla during the engine comparison was funny as hell 😂😂😂
I fully agree with your statement on the "fun to drive" aspect. I'm a longterm Model S owner and recently got the chance to finally try a dual motor Model 3. Incredibly fun and enganging to drive, great steering, firm and planted suspension while not being uncomfortable. Placed an order for a Model 3 the same evening, to replace our second car.
They’re boring to look at , they handle unlawfully , speed and electricity is it’s only party trick, pretty much a short-term fix.
@@BullyBoxer diesel/petrol cars are boring, there interiors are rubbish, most of them are slow, my dad pays 250 a month to run his car in Ireland, it’s a pain in the ass to maintain. They are a remnant of the past.

@@HarrisonAdAstra What the fuck does interior have to do with being diesel, petrol or electric ?
@@BullyBoxer I agree on the looks part of your statement. I also think the exterior is boring and the interior is a tad too minimalistic. I really like German cars, I had both a potent Merc and BMW in the past and I still today prefer their exterior design. But damn, that Model 3 is fun to drive! If you get the chance: go ahead and try it! :)
The driving experience alone was enough to convince me to buy one as 2nd car.
I am currently driving a E 220d (S213). Absolut fantastic car! Then I had a test drive with a M3P and I want it so much now! This power train is that brutal….damn
well, there is a difference between quick and powerful. quick car has everything to do with its 0 - 60 timings and not much with its top speed. more horsepower is required to push the car to a greater speed, while more torque is required to push the car quickly to a specific speed, say 60mph. that's why the Tesla model 3 felt the quickest between all the other cars. and some secs are also taken by the lag of gearbox and engine in the other two cars.
Wiper menus is activated by the stalk which is what most people forget. Voice commands are brilliant on the Tesla even with a scottish accent. Dictating texts is a breeze.
I'm getting my Testa Model 3 retrofitted with the new C-Class interior. There is a company outside of Edinburgh that will do this (but I can't mention their name due to UA-cam restrictions). It's not cheap but I will have the best of both worlds then.
Yo that’s cool!
You can mention anyone's name on UA-cam. Here, let me demonstrate.

@@jonasweber9408 I blame climate activists for this EV trend
@@jonasweber9408 Does getting fisted by your local electric delivery monopoly feel any better? Haven't you noticed on your electric bill now delivery charge is much higher than generation charge? All because those morons running solar panels "selling" back to utility company would require utility companies to have extra capacity sitting idle for evening peak usage. At least among oil companies anti-trust enforcement ensure we could choose from at least half a dozen different gasoline suppliers. Now with electricity, you are stuck with one local distribution Monopoly that charges more for distribution than generation.

I really don't understand how people like the interior of the Tesla. I have been in both model 3 and model s and for the price they cost the build quality is worse than VW and materials are cheap feeling.Furthermore the lack of any buttons and even a speedometer adds and shows how cheap they are made. For me I would always choose a conventional car, you still get way more for your money.
The newer ones are built better, and you can use the voice command for anything so you can keep your eyes on the road?
Pretty happy with my 2021 LR dual motor aswell. Its so cheap to run once you bought it. And the performance is Incredible
A good honest review Matt and Yes, that is the way I'm leaning too!
Great summary - I replaced a 3 series with my P3D - easily the best car I've owned
Same, I traded my F30 330i for the Standard Model 3. My experience has been amazing
Fair review had a 250e for over a year now and whilst a great intro into electric motoring I'll defo be looking to go full electric next. That's if likes of BP Pulse sort out their home chargers of course!
I'd pick the Mercedes since it's not lacking with power and it feels just relaxed when you're in it
Those Tesla panel gaps 💀 ☠️ my god they’re a mile wide and so uneven
The bigger the wheel size, the more gas/electric the car needs to move it along. The smaller the wheel the better the economy and ride quality.
If Tesla were to come up with a new design and an interior equivalent to the Mercedes, it would instantly become number 1
That’s true. I drove my brothers new Model 3 and wasn’t impressed by the interior or the quality. I didn’t feel the ”thing” and comfort in it.
Mercedes, you mean glossy reflective trim and cheap feeling plastic buttons? No, thanks.

Just came from a 2020 S4 to 2021 model 3 sr+. I’m not saying they are equivalent - but honestly the Tesla is not as far off as you would think in terms of performance, drive and even interior materials. Factor in the price difference and AV incentives…
