  • Jason Vieaux (JasonVieauxGuit...) teaches the classical guitar lesson: Bach - Courante BWV 996 from his Online Classical Guitar School. More free samples at the link!
This piece has a lot of notes, ornaments, and a wide variance of subdivisions. Even the pulse itself is grouped into two different meters. This isn't marked by the 3 in the time signature. It is vague for a reason, Jason says. The French style has so much more ornamentation and complexity. The 3 isn't 3/2 to 6/4. The reason why is because it really goes back and forth and does not have a set meter. Jason Vieaux highlights these fluctuations throughout the piece to guide you through the Courante. He plays the while counting the beats and the subdivisions out loud.
Even though 3/2 and 6/4 have the same number of beats, the beat emphasis is what changes. Knowing the proper emphasis points on the beats help you properly phrase the piece. As you can tell, Courante is very rhythmically tricky. Take out the ornaments and work on understanding the rhythm without any other distractions.

Nice to know I'm not alone struggling to get the first measure right. Very informative. It will help me get the flourishes and trills right. I like the in-depth measure by measure analysis. Playing this piece as part of my regular practice I'll enjoy adding the finer points of the dynamics.

Wow! Jason Vieaux taught me in a master class before.
He is a great teacher so why are there so many dislikes on this video?

Yes,...now that you mention this.. Where do these dislikes come from..why so many? I don't understand, what can be possibly so wrong about what he does.

One of the best players in the world. To me baroque stuff is like jazz and blues back then. Great lesson.

Back in January 1972, when I began taking 2 years of classical guitar lessons (from a student of a student of Segovia), I was told that the fret-hand thumb is never to be seen; the thumb was to hide behind the neck, and used to offset the pressure of the fret-fingers as they fretted the neck. Jason's fret-hand thumb often encircles the guitar neck and can be seen from a frontal face-on view of the guitar. What happened? Did orthodoxy change during the past 34 years? Is this one of those arcane rules that someone later discovers to be useless and, suddenly, that which was formerly forbidden is now the currently correct/trendy/required/etc. thing to do? Who changed the rule? Was it published somewhere?

It matters more if you have small hands, because the reason you put your finger behind the guitar neck is so you can reach better on the frets. I guess it doesn't matter as much to Jason because he has bigger hands plus he is really advanced so technique probably doesn't matter as much

He seems to me a very nice and friendly guy, an excellent, analytical and very helpful teacher and a splendid guitarist (his Julia Florida for example is stunningly beautiful and my example). Yet, to be unjustifiably nitpicking, I think that this courante (BWV 996) is played a wee bit better by John Williams: clearer polyphony and more of a dance thanks to his pronounced 'jumpy' rhythm. But who am I? Right. I retreat into anonymity.
