CHEESY HASH BROWN CASSEROLE!! Best Recipe Ever!

1 small onion
3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup melted butter
2 cups sour cream
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
30 ounce bag shredded hash brown potatoes
