  • This video describes the Gold Shop Mercury Capture System (MCS), a low cost and easy to build technology that can reduce mercury vapor and aerosols emitted by artisanal gold shops by as much as 80 percent.
The MCS is currently being used successfully in gold shops in several cities and town in gold producing regions in Peru and Brazil -- and has the potential to be used in countries through Central and South American, Sub-Saharan Africa
This video presents an overview of the growing problem of mercury contamination of cities and towns in over 60 countries due to gold shop emissions. A description of the MCS how it works, and how it can be built in the towns it will be used using common tools and materials follows.
The video ends with a discussion of how the wide-scale use of the MCS in gold producing areas can result in the prevention of hundreds or even thousands of kilograms of airbourne mercury from being released and contaminating people, flora and fauna.
The plans and schematics for this technology is available internationally at no cost through a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-NoDerivs License to facilitate its widespread use.
This project was funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Office of International and Tribal Affairs with the assistance of the Argonne National Laboratory's Environmental Science Division.

gotta like how one comment that makes sense from all the time and money wasted on the vent these guys came up with and no one even says thanks.
Thanks Dickson I think you should be on the EPA as the foreman keep that knowledge flowing.

I gotta agree with Dickson. This is an awfully complicated system to only recover 80%. A simple water chamber guarantees nearly 100% recovery and is a LOT cheaper and simpler to build.
But I guess that's the EPA for you... criminalize spilling a pint of oil on the ground, while the highway department sprays millions of gallons on the roadways every year.

Use nitric acid to desolve the murcury in amalgam and put some copper to recover after diluting the same with water.

This is what i did to capture mercury and i got Quantitive, 100% capture rate..
    This videos a joke.
All you need to do is put a water trap in the exhaust system, and make sure its turned on when you retort mercury.
Now get a steam source, eg a wallpaper stripper with the end cut off, blast the equipment and equipment chamber with steam. Flush your outtake pipe with steam. All the microscopic particles have now been taken up into into the watertrap too.
Collect and weigh your quantitive yield of recovered mercury
    Its pure too

You got to be kidding. You can make a simple retort with 2 pieces of pipe and a bent fender washer that will capture 100% of the mercury, every time! You really shouldn't give Rube Goldberg prozac :) I have never seen such nonsense! Mercury is too expensive to waste 20% with this rig from "idiots are us". Why don't you get a real american miner to show you how to build a retort for less than $10 that doesn't loose quicksilver!

That's exactly what I said and posted above.... Keep that mercury and sell it.... Hell in third world countries they can mine the mercury and make a great living the gold would be bonus (turd world countries 1 dollar a day is a living) if they find any... Mercury is everywhere and easy to get and yep a simple retort with double or triple water trap will get all of it and yep there is no such thing as airborne mercury that shit is to heavy..... Copper plates coated with mercury will get the finest flour gold and get all the mercury and silver too..... Miners always pull out more mercury than they could ever put in...... I learned from an old timer when I started panning that all miners end up with lots of mercury environmentalist have zero clue because they have zero brains because they were edumacated in colleges that take bribes and only deliver propaganda
