This is the first ferry that looked like passengers were an afterthought. It also looks like the kitchen staff are probably undersupplied and are doing the best that they can with limited resources.
It's true; they probably didn't had that many passengers to begin with, and not much people going to these islands so it's kinda hard to convince the higher ups to retrofit the ferry
It's servicing a region that few would travel to by ship (plane is quicker) and not exactly as prosperous as the main islands. If you were wealthy you would fly. If not, you would be satisfied to get there with basic comforts.
Agreed. On the dozens of these videos I've watched on this channel and a few others, I always look at the accommodations/ amenities etc (even in shared/ semi-private rooms) and think "you know, the ferry company really DID think of everything." This is the first one I've seen that made me think that they MISSED a lot. I hate to say it, but if we had these kinds of ferry cruises in the USA, they'd probably be marginally disappointing like this. 😞
Hi there. I didn't think that ferry was as hospitable, or as comfortable as other ferries you have filmed. But the blueness of the sea was spectacular !
Same here. The "pillow" was a deal breaker. That thing looked gross and I could imagine me spending the whole night just sweating on it. (Probably like everyone before me - yuck!)
somehow I thinking why this ship is not that hospitable, as this ship is had similar vibe of Ferry Ship in Indonesia as well (I'm Indonesian, and live in Indonesia), which is a island hopper ship. Those ship is mainly for shipping cargo rather peoples from main island to smaller ones, as many their shipping crates had their name (A-Line). passenger cabin ones is basically an additional income for them I think. That's why the amenities is literary basic: restaurant, small viewing lounge, showers and shops.

What this ferry lacked in amenities and comfort made for some instant classic STJ humorous observations (feeling the history in the sheets, the meal ticket rejections, and the eat-now-or-never restaurant serving times). Maybe not the most luxurious ferry, but one of the funniest videos and the most beautiful blue ocean water. Thank you!
Lol, no shower foam nor shampoo in the showers oh no the shop is closed. Breath taking colours of the sea and sunrise made up for the lack of amenities.
Man, that capsule bunk looked sad, that was my first thought, and then the restaurant just made it stronger. Of course, that's mostly in comparison to other ferries you've ridden on that have gone above and beyond. This one looked like it was meant to be just above bare minimum effort.
Not even a vending machine for soap and shampoo... First one I feel I'd have trouble getting a good night sleep on and would want to go back to bed after getting off :p
i guess the design is just for a cheap way to get to Okinawa when you can have a lot of people looking for their vacation but in normal days it just so bad tbh i guess lack of competition is also the thing since u either take this or fly unlike others
That was the upgrade. If he didn't spend the extra 1000 yen he would have had to swim behind the ferry. If any of you plan to take these trips you now know to pack your own soap and shampoo. Also to stock up on snacks to help you pass the time in jail.
I lived on Okinawa from 1957-1959, and I remember how blue the sea was! Okinawa has changed a great deal since then, so thanks for the small glimpse of my history.
The only ferry ride I've seen so far on this channel that a supply of rations should be brought along. The islands look so inviting with the blue water and what look like beaches in the distance in Yoron.
The beautiful blue water highlighted this ferry trip. The ferry seemed lacking in basics, as well as restaurant choices. The water is reminiscent of our Gulf beaches here in FL. Thank you.
I think some (let's not kid ourselves...) ALL of the other ships you've been on have better accommodations, this one kind of seemed like a prison ship taking prisoners to a remote island to serve out their time, lol. Thanks for taking us around Okinawan islands
MRDBOYDELUXE: Funny you should say that. My opinion is that when ships come to the end of their working life they should be turned into prison ships and left in the middle of the sea. Like an Alcatraz Island. If they want to jump let them.
Consider the 25 hours travel time, you kinda can see why the price is high. Plus it's doubtful that many people are gonna take this ferry to some islands
@@frds_skce It honestly looked like they shoehorned passenger service into this boat. It wasn't originally meant for people to travel on (and if it was, it's past was better then the present).
I spit my hot tea when you say "I feel history in the sheet." The ocean color under the daylight is beautiful and the island too. Magnificent work as always👍
It doesn't look "run down" to me at all. For a ship that's nearly a decade old, this ship is still in best condition compared to other other 10-year old ships I've seen in the world. The amenities might be a bit lacking, but the physical ship itself looked like it was still pretty new and clean.
It more so of a 60% cargo 40% passenger ferry because of the way it's designed. The forward part of the ship have cranes and deck space for cargo containers since it's one of the main way of transporting cargo across Okinawa, and since the population is sparsely scattered across different islands the amenities are just about right for the islanders to travel to mainland Japan and back.
Your trip from Okinawa to Kagoshima by Ferry is very beautiful. After watching your video I really want to go on vacation to Okinawa and Kagoshima. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Solo Travel Japan! Love your videos, I've been working my way through your backlog. Congratulations on how successful your content has been so far, I think it speaks to the quality of what you put out.
These cruises remind me of the times when my mum and I went on European cruises. I won't go anymore with her gone, but it's nice to be able to travel vicariously through your videos. Thank you.
I love the videos you do. You perform a great service for those of us who cannot be there in person. Yoron is indeed a hidden gem. It is unfortunate that the capsule bed was not up to the standards that we have come to expect from the other ferries, but you handled it gracefully. Thank you for bringing us along on your journeys.
I find your videos super relaxing. No talking, just the video and your thoughts typed on the screen. It is almost like a meditation. Funny that the kitchen is only open for 30 minutes, seems very short.
Well, not precisely a great ferry but you made the trip enjoyable, with your attitude towards the inconveniences. The blue colour of the sea was gorgeous! The amenities for this ferry were rather underwhelming, especially compared to the previous video. However, one could speculate that if they did invest in better amenities and more room options that more people might consider traveling with them. Just a thought. That sea is so much brighter than your 2023 video. I just really love it. The color is just... WOW. I can see why you tried the other ferry a year later. Too bad about the weather, and the ferry clearly has a priority on commercial cargo and utility versus passengers.
That beautiful blue ocean! The water here on the southeastern coast of the U.S. where I am is green, sometimes 'muddy' green looking if the sand is stirred up by rough seas. I prefer the blue!
Okinawa is the reason why I was born in the United States. My great-grandmother's family could not accept the fact that she fell in love with an Okinawan. She had been trained as a doctor and was from Tokyo. They ran away to the US to be married. My grandfather was conceived on the ship over. 🤣
Great - all of us on youtube are going, through the screen, on this ferry ride with you!!! It feels more like a cargo ferry but still good for passenger travel. The colors are amazing - aquamarine blue on sunny days to a calm deep blue. It's still a very enjoyable ride - so thank you & thumbs up for sharing with us all on youtube.
Wow those are beautiful islands! Definitely agree with you, the ferry doesn't look that comfortable but I would ride it to visit the islands anyway. Great video!
I was a Marine stationed on Okinawa. We trained In Kagoshima once with JGSDF. We took a ferry to Sasebo, and I don't know why but everyone was sea sick. Everyone was puking there guts out.
Thank you Solo! It's always a great experience wherever you take us. I agree, the water was a blue as I have ever seen; appreciate you taking the time to film it for us. The very first pastry you ate is known in North America as a "bear claw" because of it's shape. The shrimp looked amazing. (maybe when things are breaded and deep fried you could show us the inside?). Thank you for the tour of the south sea islands and for taking the time to film, edit, add English, and post. You always make weekends better. Hugs my friend.
They used to sell the yukimi daifaku in Malaysia when I was kid. You can get them even at the groceries stores, but not anymore. Have to get them at specialised Japanese foodstores in malls etc. So whenever I go to Japan I try to eat it as often. So nostalgic.
One thing I've started doing is using google translate via lens on my smartphone to read some the menu descriptions while watching on my smart TV. Helps a lot. I would feel more confident in Japan with the amazing visual translate ability. Soon as covid nonsense is over I'm going if they'll let me in

Cool journey thanks for sharing. Looks like it’s more for freight than passenger comfort but very awesome to see.
Wow those are beautiful islands! Definitely agree with you, the ferry doesn't look that comfortable but I would ride it to visit the islands anyway. Great video!
I can’t believe how blue that water was at the second island!! I’ve only seen something like that in the Caribbean!!
The water is so blue!!!! It's absolutely beautiful 😍
THANK YOU for take us with you and the sunset was beautiful😊🤗
THANKS FOR sharing. lovely trip 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Well a ferry like this reminds me on a weekend in a 80s camper van
I love how you film everything for us to see.. And we experience it all, along with you, without actually being there.. keep up the good work👍👍
"I like you"
"Reject"
(Cry)
😂😂😂
Everybody obsessing over the 'history in the sheet' & meanwhile I can't get over the geography of the pillow
Keep making these videos & I miss the Waving & the Light Sabers
After watching so many of your ferry’s trip, this one is really the most
basic and the shortest time that the restaurant and shop open. 😪😱
Wow. . That's the prettiest sunset I've seen on your vids so far.
Those oceans are so beautiful. Thanks for taking us along with you!
Thank you for making all these wonderful videos. My family and I recently found your channel and we've binge watched all your previous videos.
One of your videos is EXACTLY what I needed to end my day with.
I was a Marine stationed on Okinawa. We trained In Kagoshima once with JGSDF. We took a ferry to Sasebo, and I don't know why but everyone was sea sick. Everyone was puking there guts out.
Thank you so much for your wonderful work. I get to travel all over Japan because of you. I am grateful. Good night from Asheville, North Carolina.
🚢YES!
Beautiful! Looks like a tropical island. 🏄🏼
They used to sell the yukimi daifaku in Malaysia when I was kid. You can get them even at the groceries stores, but not anymore. Have to get them at specialised Japanese foodstores in malls etc. So whenever I go to Japan I try to eat it as often. So nostalgic.
Beautiful sunrise. For dining, I guess you have to know the timing of the restaurant. Thanks for showing us
thank you for the beautiful sunrise!
This was the funniest Video till now. Thanks sharing these trips with us. Greetings from Germany!
Danke fürs mitnehmen auf diese schöne Fahrt🙏🛳🙋♀️🇩🇪
One thing I've started doing is using google translate via lens on my smartphone to read some the menu descriptions while watching on my smart TV. Helps a lot. I would feel more confident in Japan with the amazing visual translate ability. Soon as covid nonsense is over I'm going if they'll let me in
