Nice comparison, thanks for doing this. To my ears, the SM57 cuts through a bit more and has a little more high end. The sE has a fuller, fatter sound that's a little dull for my taste on snare. It almost sounds like a ribbon mic to me. The sE would probably be great on a hi hat or ride or any instrument that needs the high end tamed. Both are awesome mics just depends on the application and personal preference.
I hear it that way too. That's a great point on the SE V7X being a good possible cymbal close mic. I like my SM7b for that, but I also like the SM7b for snare bottom. So I wonder if the SE V7X could be used for either snare bottom or hi-hat (where SM57 and Audix i5 can sound a little sharp/thin/brittle). Might be a good partner to my SM7b, and for less than a third the price.
This is a dandy shootout. The extra weight & slight reduction in upper midrange attack (but still a decently cutting transient) made the SE sound really blended with overheads. Sometimes I find the upper midrange spike of the sm57 a little irritating, & hi hat bleed is absolutely rotten if the drummer has heavy hats in close proximity to the snare mic. My feeling is that the SE might add a little weight & punch, while also not inviting so much ugly into the signal from hats & other shrill bleed. I'd be curious to hear solo'd snare mics for off axis sound comparison, but in context is really what matters most, & I'm not requesting. Thanks for putting in the time to make this. Nicely done!
Highly prefer the SM57, but the SeV7x is still a great microphone. Would think acoustic guitars would be way better with the SeV7x due to the low end, but for snare for metal, SM57.
I noticed slightly difference in tone. Sm57 being crispier and v7 being fatter. But the greatest difference is transient compression. Maybe is youtube idk. V7 has a natural compression to it's initial attack so the snare feels less present not only due to tonal characher but mainly cause it dull the transients. I imagine it would fit for a big 80s snare
From the respective SPL graphs, the V7x has a less pronounced, but more extended high-end, as well as a more extended low-end. The proximity boost is about the same, but the more moderate high-end and extended low-end just means the V7x ends up with much stronger lower bass at the same distance. It should really be rolled off more than the 57, so the spectral balance is more similar. The V7x will then sound more neutral than the 57, and with more high-end detail. The 57 just has more presence to cut through in live situations without as much high freq clutter, but I like the idea of a flatter extend high-end to start with. It can be more easily eq'd for whatever scenario.
The sE sounded a little "muted or tame", IMHO. The SM57 wow ! The Crack on the snare ! (great playing too). I have some SM57's lying around, Keep trying new stuff like Beyerdynamics, Audix i5. EV-ND44's list goes on & on. But when in doubt, a Ludwig Supra and a SM57 😁. Nice upload. Thanks
All snare mics want to be an SM57. that is the bar all are measured by. Most other mics claim to be 'better' or comparable but everyone ends up going back to the SM57. That's why most add a 7 at the end of whatever their model name is. Then again, everyone has a different taste and its really not about the mic, it's about the performance , the context with the other mics and snare tuning.
I actually prefer the SE V7X as well. Alot of engineers I send drums to really like the snare tone because of the sE. 👍🏼
Yeah... they are sick

Love the response.... 🤘🤘 appreciated

the hi hat in context sounds so much better with the v7x. but the 57 has that snare sound that i'm so familiar with.
Will fit perfectly for top position with its emphasis around 200 Hz. For the bottom mic I would prefer something more neutral.
Yeaah correct....I gotta agree with that 💯

I gotta agree to that brother
Sounds great! What kind of mic preamps / interface are you using for the snare and rest of the kit?
Just Using Audient Evo 8....which directly goes into my computer.... quite minimal
Great video! I’ve been thinking of getting the SE and this really helped out, I think I’ll choose the V7x for fatter snares
Yeah definitely.... they sound great
Coated drum head or clear drum head which is better for long sustaine and warm tone for tom drum.. Please recommend
For snare Single ply coated.... for toms double ply clear.... I find this combination great....

I agree to ur points 🤘🤘
How would you compare the hihat bleed between sm57 and v7x?
I should have done it
Brother can you please tell me that which mic is best for tabala right(sharp) sE v7x is better or shure sm57
I guess SM57 could be a better option

Still a 57 guy.....but the SE8s for overhead and SDC acoustic work....are untouchable for the $$
I gotta take it

Yeah I have had the opportunity to try both Audix and Beyerdynamics.... they sound great with their characters
Thanks for hanging around 🤘🤘

What's this groove called???
It's very similar to the fatback groove.
what snare is that?
PDP Mainstage.... and I have changed the heads and the snare too
괜히 sm57을 쓰는게 아니네요.. ㄷㄷ
🤣🤣 well that's ok
Sm57 still wins.
😅😅 that is subjective
The real contender for the 57 is the M201
Would love to experience that
v7 is very soft. more resonance. i think it’s a matter of jenre.
Exactly....just has a different character.....depends what u want
💎💎💎✅💎💎💎
🤘🤘❤❤
V7X is more like a Beta 57. Supercardioid.
I feel the same
