I will never cease to love when she get's pissed. "I will not yield sir!" Expressing very valid discontent but with polite language. You've gotta love her. I support and I support D.C. becoming a state.
First of all there are not 700,000 taxpayers in Washington, DC. Secondly, these so called taxpayers knew when the moved there that they had no representation and why. Third, there should be no change to the status of Washington, D.C. for the very reason the it was not allowed statehood in the first place. Like being a no mans land it is a no state land. The very reason land was carved out of Virginia and Maryland for the District. That no state held the capitol of the country in its borders. It was good then and it is still good today
Amy Kim As an American myself, I could not agree more with you. Are you Korean btw? If so...I love your country. It's in the top 3 countries I want to visit in the future...the others being Iceland and Japan. If you aren't Korean(I made an "American-Assumption" based on the "Kim" part of your name)...I'm sure your country is cool too. :) As for John Oliver...good lord do I ever love that man. Jon Stewart will be missed; but thank yahweh we have someone who's more than capable of stepping up to the plate and filling the gaping hole his absence has left.
Steven Kay it’s important to have representatives that are passionate and care about the people the represent In her case the people of DC I hope that the people i vote for can represent us with such care
That ending was nothing but amazing. I think John should do a episode about Teachers Pay, when I found out how low and details about it I realized how ridiculously little they make. This one is free my good sir :)
My god not another one. So…teachers should make an equal salary for working around 5/6th of the time as any other normal person? And that's not to mention the ridiculous number of benefits and pension that comes with working for the government. And still they (generally) make more than the average. Working under 85% of the hours that a normal person does they make over 100% of the salary a normal person does. And you think they need more?
Jacob Worboy Its not about the hours they work. A lot of hours occur outside the class room like preparation and correcting and report cards etc. Education is something that is key to development and underpaid teachers that play a major role in society is never a good thing.
Teachers that are worth paying even more don't choose public school. They choose private. There might be 1 in 20 public teachers that are worthy of a pay raise.
Jacob Worboy mmm your a little off. My mom retired as a teacher and I can tell you one thing for sure. Teachers work ALOT. People don't realize how much work goes into teaching. Class prep, lesson plans, grading, parent techer conferences. They work alot. BUT on that note their pay and benefits arent lacking either. My mother makes a pretty comfortable retirement and has pretty good benefits but she definitely earned it. Teachers don't make much to begin with but if they stick with it they end up making a pretty good amount later in their carriers. Not donald trump status or anything even close but its not chump change either.. Furthermore teachers arent paid during the months they don't teach. They can opt to have a certain amount deducted from their checks each month so they can recieve it later during the summer months or they can save it themselves. Either way teachers aren't paid during their off time and people drastically underestimate how much work goes into teaching. But they also underestimate how much they get Paid and what benefits they receive
Yup you're right that a lot of hours take place out of classroom. Just a quick question: how many hours take place in class room? Generally 830-230? So…6? And a normal job is what? 9-5. So…8? So ya, if teachers spend a couple hour after school finishing some stuff up, well that's just getting them back to normal hours. And then we have to consider weekends and I guarantee 0 teachers spend 16 hours EVERY weekend working. Certain weekends yes but not every. So ya. Teachers spending time grading tests and papers STILL doesn't get them up to the same weekly hours as an average person. That's not even including the 2 MONTH HOLIDAY they receive and the fact that the union basically prevents them from being fired for anything short of sexual assault. Don't feel so bad for the teachers.

4:55 - that caught my ear so I looked it up - yes, the Pennsylvania Mutinity of 1783 was a protest in which hundreds of Continental Army blockaded Independence Hall to try and disrupt Congres' meeting, because they wanted to be paid for their service in the Revolutionary War and had demanded it before, but Congress ignored them. Also, in Googling "the Pennsylvania Mutinity" I was first taken to a Wikipedia page for a separate "Pennsylvania Line Mutinity" two years earlier in 1781. Pennsylvania paid soldiers much lower wages than other states ($20 for three years of service, according to Wikipedia) and barracks conditions were terrible. So, once the new year began and they deemed their three years of service were up, they basically abandoned their posts until Joseph Reed came to negotiate with them, agreed with their grievances, and gave the $20 dollar men the ability to leave and then immediately re-enlist with higher pay. Reading all this, I cannot help but think "I didn't realize the US tradition of Congress screwing over their soldiers went back that far."
Congress also treated World War 1 veterans the same way BLM protestors are being treated now, the reasoning behind it was that a few of those protesting veterans shut down highways and destroyed a vehicle. Surprise surprise, the minute you act as if your welfare is more important than minor economic gains, the government comes in to beat you into submission. It doesn't matter if you're a veteran fighting for stimulus to save you from The Great Depression, a college student protesting against bombing the Vietnamese, or a protestor shouting "I can't breathe", Uncle Sam is busting out the water cannons and nightsticks all the same.

" let's all kick out Flordia, 'cause no one thinks they're great" Or we could just give Minnesota to Canada, no one cares about us and then we get health care... eh?
Sure! You are practically Canadian anyway. Might as well make it official. History In 1844, French Canadian settler Benjamin Gervais moved north from Saint Paul to claim land in order to build the first grist mill in Minnesota that was independent from the government. Today, the large lake on the east side of Little Canada bears his name (Lake Gervais). The grist mill was converted into a park, which is recognized as the birthplace of the city. Little Canada began as the township of New Canada in 1858. In the 1950s the township was threatened by the suburban sprawl of the ensuing larger communities that were formed, such as Maplewood. In 1953, the city leaders came together and established the village of Little Canada. It became a city in 1974. Canadian Ties The city displays the Canadian influence in its history in several ways. Its official symbol is an initial LC on a white fleur-de-lis with a red Maple Leaf background, and the Flag of Canada is displayed in council chambers. The city itself also hosts an annual celebration named Canadian Days in early August with its sister city Thunder Bay, Ontario, in Canada. www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46741175
Except Guam, right? Two-thirds of Guam's residents are white as rain. Mostly because Two-thirds of the island is US military base. Two-thirds of the military people are white. Your statement still applies, though, because all the military personnel not born on Guam, have voting rights by virtue of being born on in a US State. US Military active, but born on Guam... Have no voting rights just like non-white civilians on Guam. Overlapping double standard! Hold it, Guam's people are all American citizens just like Puerto Rican's. Puerto Rico has something neither Guam OR Washington DC has... One US Representative in Congress! It's true. Unfortunately, the are in the "Don't speak unless spoken to, no vote on any issue. Worked in DC for 6+ years. Lived in MD because of the taxes and cost of living. Either grant them statehood or exempt them from federal taxes. DC pays more per capita than any state and more in federal taxes than 22 other states. As an independent, I like to be non biased and open minded. The only argument seems to be the GOP worried about a place that's mostly black and full of Democrats having even more representation.
@Jenn smith Lmao a high schooler, sounds about right. I used to be more libertarian/right leaning when I was 18 too, but then I went to college. Hopefully the same will happen to you little buddy. 🤙
@Jenn smith Lmao, college isn't a "lefty-brainwashing" college professors are hella skittish when it comes to the idea of teaching the ins and outs of ideologies like communism and socialism in an academic sense (any genuinely left wing ideology that's not simply center-left is fundamentally and philosophically opposed to the status quo and established Power structures). Now there is a tendency amongst educated people becoming relatively more left wing by the standards of the american Overton window, which isn't saying a whole lot as the us Overton window is so far shifted to the right that anyone who is right wing (not moderately so/not center-right) is a full on political extremist. So if you were to describe it in terms of global range of political opinions, education really just has a tendency to make people more moderate in general with some people leaning left and others right (btw, someone who is center right on say the political compass, would be closer to center-left/neoliberal relative to the US Overton window; yeah I wasn't joking when I said it's way shifted to the right).
If we're going to give DC statehood, I say go all the way with it and give them back that chunk of Virginia that got taken out when the civil war started. I'm not saying this for any practical reason, I just think it would be really cool to have a diamond shaped state.

And so, I'm proud as well, of the show and the people who are not just idly watching, but hear John Oliver calling for change and thinking "let me start that change!"
The Animaniacs state song already includes Washington DC, so all schools would have to do is use that instead. Plus, then kids would learn both the states and their capitols. Win win!
Except all the people at the Vatican are on the same side and have the same goal. Congress just wants to butt heads and be selfish. You'd have a better chance at getting hit by lightning, get chomped on by a shark, then fall into a black hole in immediate sequential order.
Even if we don't kick out Florida, we can do some fat trimming. Do we REALLY need a North and South Dakota? A North and South Carolina? An East and West Virginia? Boom, that's six states turned into three. Let's make DC, Guam, and Samoa into states in order to bring our quota back up to fifty!
***** It sounds stupid, but, as far as the US Gov is concerned, splitting California into 6 does a LOT more than banning gay marriage for a little while. Within 20 years, the whole US will have gay marijuana legalized. But the 6 states thing? That's just pointless fracturing, and a needless complication of governmental organization. Combining the Virginias, the Dakotas, and the Carolinas is a nice simplification of organization. Also, we should turn China into 16 or so US States. Think about it: The United States of America and Asia. Maybe Make Japan into a few states, too... start to change the main language to English. If we annex Japan, though, it'll probably be peacefully, and a few hundred years from now, if the US starts to become less American and more a Union of States in America and Asia. That's my historical future fantasy. See the US become a true empire, a _democratic_ empire. It'd be nice to see several different peoples unite under one flag, mostly willingly. And afford them as much autonomy as the original 50.
I believe that's been a big hurdle for Puerto Rico as well. They are largely liberal. To be honest I'm not sure if Guam, American Samoa etc. want statehood but I'm sure they want a vote. Their citizens serve in our military. It's crazy that they don't get representation. Crazy! I don't understand republicans keeping the vote out if the hands if their citizens. It's immoral. I'm not thrilled with their voting practices but I'd never deny them the right. It's shameful.
Taxation without representation pretty ironic the main thing that led to the fight for American independence is what the US has been doing to the residents of its capital
They have representation, too bad he doesn't bother to go into why it was setup this way. Pro Tip, he quit trying to provide an alternate to any story years ago. States gave up land to DC, the easy solution is give back all the land that has residences on it, except the White House. Done, rights restored. No change in the flag, the voting system, nothing but the "restoration" of rights. Maryland and Virginia didn't cede land for a new state, one that would then make their Senators and Representatives have a smaller voice? It is beyond irritating that this short sited power play isn't seen for what it is...right now its very liberal in DC, so Democrats would most likely increase the holds on all three branches. And it would lower the voices of the "fly-over" states. You want to talk about how many people voted for Trump vs. Hillary in 2016, look at how many counties were won by Trump in either election. You want to talk about disenfranchising people? You make DC a state and the left coast (both of them) will have more of a say over everyone in the middle. He wants to complain about how DC wants people to smoke MJ, but apparently DC doesn't get the right to defend themselves...and somehow that makes sense? Come on, at least acknowledge that your view is a little simplistic. The point of DC wasn't to have a new state, its a city at best, one of the big reasons was to have an area controlled by the Federal Government so no state had any sway. You think Pelosi is going to seed power? No, at best you are just carving out a new state AND a new federal district. And if you don't see that John is being disingenuous (AT BEST), then please tell me why Maryland and Virginia getting the land back doesn't solve the voting issue. Because multiple Republicans have already said they would be fine with that and would vote for that. And you can also tell me why the Democrats don't seem to be on board with that solution, they don't want DC residents to be represented!?!? How awful, right? Framing is a wonderful thing, I just wish John would at least pay some lip service to the other side of these issues. #GiveDCTheVote-inMD&VA (yeah, I am not good a tags).

With the situation they are in right now, being a state would greatly benefit them, because they would have government support. TL;DR Puerto Rico dislikes being a territory but can't decide whether to be a state or country.
andell1 The thing with puerto rico, is we where a colony from spain. And as any colony they create a sense of patriotism to subdue the mind of the people. Right now we have to a certain degree the same with the States. But we have 2 main political parties that control the goverment since US Congress gave us the go ahead to choose our own governors. And they Wont benefit at all from independence(no Congress money) and from statehood (their parties will cease to exist) so the people in their ignorance nearly always vote for no change. But probably if you asked the people right now, they will choose statehood.

In puerto Rocco's last survey over statehood they breached somewhere over 50% so it's a possibility. The issue is that the island is filled with rich US citizens who use puerto rico's territory status as a tax haven. So there is a lot of influential clout actively seeking to prevent statehood there.

@@pelmel1990 touché
Sure! You are practically Canadian anyway. Might as well make it official.
History
In 1844, French Canadian settler Benjamin Gervais moved north from Saint Paul to claim land in order to build the first grist mill in Minnesota that was independent from the government.
Canadian Ties
The city displays the Canadian influence in its history in several ways.

Lmao, college isn't a "lefty-brainwashing" college professors are hella skittish when it comes to the idea of teaching the ins and outs of ideologies like communism and socialism in an academic sense (any genuinely left wing ideology that's not simply center-left is fundamentally and philosophically opposed to the status quo and established Power structures).

@Wang Liqin when did that happen?
@Wang Liqin whataboutism
I want DC to have at least a vote in congress after watching the lady say she wouldn't yield. I don't even live in DC.
The Animaniacs state song already includes Washington DC, so all schools would have to do is use that instead. Plus, then kids would learn both the states and their capitols. Win win!
And, kids from the next generation would get exposure to one of the greatest kids shows of all time. Win-win-win!
+Tom Pinney Yes!!!
"Capitals" with an a, clearly it isn't just the song that your education system needs to change
no no, let's keep it as capitols and start the Hunger Games!
I think you need to capitolize the word capitol.
If a city within a city (Vatican City) can be a state, so can DC. If a city island powerhouse like Singapore can be a state, so can DC.
Thanks for the advice kim
Thank you. I vote for you every election. I raised my children to vote for you. The elections are free and fair. We all love you.
This is wierd i was just commenting on mr. Hitler's post over at jimmy falons page. To freaking funny!
*"Thanks, Satan."*
Except all the people at the Vatican are on the same side and have the same goal. Congress just wants to butt heads and be selfish. You'd have a better chance at getting hit by lightning, get chomped on by a shark, then fall into a black hole in immediate sequential order.
"I WILL NOT YIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
If only she followed with "you get nothing, you lose sir!!!"
made me cry a a single tear lol
HOLD THE LINE !
It's funny cause that's the same phrase people think DC drivers say all the time
Even if we don't kick out Florida, we can do some fat trimming.
Do we REALLY need a North and South Dakota? A North and South Carolina? An East and West Virginia? Boom, that's six states turned into three. Let's make DC, Guam, and Samoa into states in order to bring our quota back up to fifty!
Kyman102 watch out for the six californias initiative though
*****
I don't think that really has any chance of that passing.
Kyman102 they said the same about prop 8. Never under estimate peoples stupidity.
Also we really do not need a bunch of east coat states like New Hampshire and Vermont just combine them
***** It sounds stupid, but, as far as the US Gov is concerned, splitting California into 6 does a LOT more than banning gay marriage for a little while.
I think he didn't mention that republican really don't want dc statehood cuz dc is democratic as fuck
Well then fuck the republicans, they can move to fucking North Korea if they want to have only one party option on the ballet.
He indirectly mentioned it by saying how DC is consistently liberal and the House usually isn't.
they could merge rhode island into massachusetts. problem solved
DC, Guam, Mariana island, Puerto Rico, US virgin island, A Samoa = Colony of the US.
In 2016, colony = evil
Taxation without representation
pretty ironic the main thing that led to the fight for American independence is what the US has been doing to the residents of its capital
wow
@@givemethedaily1052 the people of both DC and Maryland don’t want that plan, you can’t make that reality if the people affected don’t want it

As a lifetime resident of Florida, I have to say: yea pretty much. Seriously, just get rid of Florida completely. But let me move up north first.

We should grant statehood to DC and all the territories
J.J. NOX Yay, we haven't forgotten about virgin islands, puerto rico, etc!
J.J. NOX Only if they want. Many don't want statehood. Puerto Rico continues to vote against it.
virusts Y'all can always return it to Spain :p
nachoguy5 Puerto Rico is mostly 50/50 with the choices being be a state/be a country.
Yes I live in the American Colony of Washington DC.
Glad to see you doing this!
That song was THE BOMB!
Remember when we criticized Obama for trying to make government work, compromise, avoid government shutdowns and get things done?
Natalya yes. And we were called racist for doing so.
Yes. As a Democrat, I do remember criticizing Obama. A lot, actually. No person is above reproach whether they’re from your own party or not. His presidency was far from perfect.
@XDigsX 13 Woah, I didn't say Trump was doing better than Obama did. All I said was that all presidents, all politicians really, should be critisized. That no politician is or could be perfect.
@XDigsX 13 Stop bootlicking just because Trump is a fascist nightmare doesn't mean the Obama presidency was perfect in comparison.
*SinnedNogara*
I’m gonna be honest, though, I really like Obama after learning about all that he did. Obviously, there were flaws (he’d readily admit that, himself), but he did a lot of good. I wish that I was as politically aware as I am now back then so I could have appreciated his presidency more during the time.

"The Song Used To Be A Lot Longer"
OMFG💀.
And while you're at it, can Puerto Rico be a state too?
jseeker1867 We are in dire need of more states.
jseeker1867 lets not get ahead of ourselves
The island is not fine the way it is, but I think independence is a better path
In puerto Rocco's last survey over statehood they breached somewhere over 50% so it's a possibility. The issue is that the island is filled with rich US citizens who use puerto rico's territory status as a tax haven. So there is a lot of influential clout actively seeking to prevent statehood there.
jseeker1867 Congress probably won't allow it. They would probably say something along the lines if it became a state, it would be less special as a tourist location.
I love it when Oliver lets children sing. The boy who sang about Brexit was also fabulous.
"That's pathetic." First time Faux News has ever said anything that's true..
That's because it was the local DC network affiliate. It wasn't the cable news network. It's the station that broadcasts the Simpsons, not Bill O' Reilly.
Unfortunately now that it has been said on fox news the very fabric of reality will change to make it a lie.
I see what you did there...
you mean apart from "this is fox news"
This is also a lie : there is "news" in the name.
My sincerest commendations to the writing staff and full time/ part time researchers of the show.

This segment has everything, a prediction of the political conversation after 4 years of its airing, and a dissing of Florida. What could u possibly need more?
It's not really a prediction more of just a reflection on how little actually gets done because of how broken our democracy is
@@zachfakelastname normally I'd remind you that it's a bad idea for a federal government to take the public's demands and finish deciding on the matter the next day, and that it should take time to avoid being ruled by mob mentality. +Filipe Barroso States choose to launch their rockets from the southernmost location they have reliable access to, not the place they care least about. Based on your knowledge of of Kazakhstan and French Guiana, I'm going to assume I don't need to explain why the southern location is favorable to rocket launches.
Brian Habing Great. Jokes aren't really your strength.

funnily, the americans renamed the intended state of Columbia to Washington to avoid confusion with the district of columbia. Funny how that turned out.
If kicking out Florida isn't an option, we can always merge two states together. I mean, do we really need two Carolinas?
ManiaMac1613 The Carolinas aren't like twins. North Carolina is like the sibling who went to college and got a job in the finance industry. And South Carolina is the brother who is a line cook at Denny's and sells meth out the back. If they didn't have the same name, they'd want nothing to do with each other.
Merge the Dakotas.
ManiaMac1613 or the Virginias
I know the names are similar for no good reason, but North Carolina is nothing like South Carolina, and we don't want to be merged under one set of rules for both.
ManiaMac1613 Of course, because the next time someone accidentally drops a nuke on it, having a backup Carolina or a backup Virginia might help
No don't merge states we should just add one more state so it will be even again.

Gumnball
That's what's so great about us: the entertainment never ends.
Gumnball Washington was literally our Best President. When He left Office, he asked us not to split into politcal parties. And what do we have now? 2 Fucking Political Parties. Lastly, when is Congress gonna get rid of their Diapers and actually grow up for once?
George Horna We have more than 2, the problem is the other 'minority' parties do not get represented in the media unless they do something crazy and are all lumped together as 'independent' if by chance they get elected, so they are repressed as hell.
But the main problem is the two 'main' parties refuse to even attempt to work together without personal/party gain. Because that's the whole point of becoming a senator/president, advancing yourself and your party. Surely not fixing and serving the country. That's the poor sap who is elected after you's job.
That was maybe the greatest 17 minutes I've ever spent watching a video. And I want that song at the end played at my funeral
